St. Edward’s Website : WWW.ST-EDWARDS.ORG From Fr. Mike’s Desk Following World War II a great change came over the American Landscape, and how many Americans live their lives. I am referring to the rise of suburbia. Certainly this relates to all of here in St. Edward’s Parish as we live on Long Island one of the largest suburban areas in the state. With the rise of the suburban neighborhoods the way that people relate to each other seems to have changed. When people lived in cities or large towns our neighbors were considered the people who lived in the same building or the next building or the same block. In the case of the Brooklyn Diocese everybody was known by what parish you lived in, these were your neighbors. When people lived on farms or rural areas and small towns, the neighbors lived on the next farm or in the village (just like Little House on the Prairie). In the suburbs we mostly understand our neighbor to be the person who lives next door to us or just those in the neighborhood. In most cases this does not extend outside our immediate neighborhood (except when the kids go to school and extend the range of relationships). The dictionary defines the word neighbor as a person who lives near another person or a thing situated near another, a fellow person. For the Jews (the Rabbis and Lawyers) in Jesus’ time, a neighbor was seen as being a fellow Jew. This meant that they were not obligated to help anyone who was not a Jew (no matter how bad the situation was). This sets the scene for today’s Gospel Account and why Jesus offered the parable of the Good Samaritan. As we read in the account, the scholar of the law stood up to test Jesus with the question as to what he had to do to inherit eternal life. Jesus repeated the ancient law of Israel in reply. He told the scholar that one should love the Lord, your God with all their heart, being, strength and mind. Then He adds that one must love their neighbor as oneself. The scholar agreed with Jesus, but to justify himself, he asked Jesus to define who his neighbor was. To answer him Jesus gives him and us the story of the man who was beaten by robbers. He was passed over by a Priest and a Levite, before the Samaritan came upon him. Remember the Jews and the Samaritans had nothing to do with each other, so it would only be natural for him to pass by the victim and not help him. However, Jesus points out that this Samaritan went beyond what was expected, and when He asks the lawyer who was the most neighborly, the lawyer answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus replies to him, and to us, “Go and do likewise.” Notice what Jesus had done, He has expanded the definition of neighbor, as well as expanding the saving scope of the Messiah. Neighbor is now defined as anyone who is need and anyone who is nearby. And love of neighbor is understood to be practical and not merely just feeling sorry for the one who is in need. The Priest and the Levite showed pity only, and did nothing to help the man. This Jesus tells us is not true love of neighbor or of God. Do not forget the Summer Festival next month August 18-21 join all of the fun, food, entertainment, and help St. Edward’s with this great fundraiser. See you there. God bless you always and thank you for all you do for Saint Edward’s Fr.
