COMMUNITY FORUM
Jerry Stevenson, Secretary, (March, 2015)
On the second Tuesday of every
month, your President holds an open
forum during or after the Coffee & News.
At this forum residents have the
opportunity to ask questions and get
answers. This forum began with Rick
Peters and continues with Gene Prescott
and it appears to be something the
residents want and like. Come join us for
coffee and a donut and bring your
question or simply listen to the Q & A.
Here are some examples of the Q & A
from the March 2015 open forum.
Question: There are often not enough
parking spaces.
Response: You are correct, at times
we find all golf cart and car spaces taken.
The construction at the Mesquite has
compounded this problem and we will
plan future construction projects out of
peak season. We also want to reinforce
the need for motorcycles and golf carts to
park in designated Golf Cart spaces.
Question(s): The new issue of the
phone book has some shortcomings. The
font is too small, deceased residents are
included and the neighborhood pages are
removed. We also enjoy the bound copy
instead of the stapled book.
Response: Thank you for your input.
This next issue will also include e-mail
addresses (optional). We will take your
input into account as we design the next
version of this critical directory. Cis
Haines will be our Community point
person who will work with First Services
Residential and Ray’s Printing for the
2016 Directory.
Question: Why don’t we have security
cameras in the pool area so we know who
caused the problem?
Response: The Board will be
approving the purchase of security
cameras in the March Board meeting.
Question: Since many of our residents
do not come to coffee and news, many of
them did not hear about the unacceptable
behavior by some of our residents. Are
you going to put an article in the
Mountaineer so everybody gets to see this
information?
Response: Yes, you will see the
President’s Corner article in this issue of
the Mountaineer covers this unfortunate
reaction by some of us
Question: What is the status of the
Mesquite Building?
Response: The Mesquite building is
targeted to be completed the second week
of May
Question: What is the status of the
Pickleball review?
Response: To date we have spent
money in two areas—a sound study and a
land survey. We have received some
proposals for 4 options to expand the
Pickleball area. A Board sub-committee
April 2015
has been formed to review the options and
this will be discussed at the April Board
workshop.
Question: Why aren’t Board members
limited to Full-Time residents and not
“Snowbirds”?
Response: It is important that we have
a mix of residents on the Board and on
our Committees. Jerry Stevenson is the
only Board member who is not here year
round. He is committed to meet all his
Board and Liaison responsibilities for all
24 months of his term. To this end we are
upgrading our conference calling
equipment and implementing 800-call in
conferencing. This will allow Jerry and
other Members who are travelling to fully
participate and fulfil their roles.

Community Corner
PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Gene Prescott
Thank you for
your support and
we the Board
Members look
forward to serving
MountainBrook
residents over the coming year. Yes, it
has been a very busy winter and we regret
the inconvenience of the Mesquite
construction and the March 5-12 pool
outage.
As I mentioned at Coffee and News,
the pool closure was due to metal filings
BOARD HIGHLIGHTS
Jerry Stevenson
The regular Board meeting was called
to order March 31, by President Gene
Prescott. He summarized his tour of the
Mesquite remodel and reported the
lighting and insulation will be completed
this week. The drywall will be installed
next. Once Kitchell has finished the
construction and painting in early May, it
will take 2 weeks for First Services
Residential staff to complete the building
commissioning. This was the first
meeting for the New Board. Six members
were present: Gene Prescott, President;
Leonard Schroeder, Vice President; Jerry
Stevenson, Secretary; Paul Kranik,
Director; Ron Olm, Director; and Rick
Peters, Director. Gary Molzen, Director
was absent.
Chris Bukovac and Randy Ratcliff
from the 5-Year Planning Committee
kicked off the Board meeting with an
executive summary of the 2015
Community Survey which was completed
by 665 residents. The Community will be
given access to the statistics on-line
through the MBV web site. Copies of
Chris’ PowerPoint will be available to
review in the Library. Randy
demonstrated the powerful analytics that
are available and the Board will be
reviewing that data. The survey write-in
comments will be consolidated by the 5Year Committee and will also be
presented to the Board. The next issue of
the Mountaineer will have additional
covering much of the deck and the pool
bottoms. First Services quickly shut
down the pool area and immediately
began cleaning the debris and emptying
the pool. As you can imagine, this was an
isolated incident but it took several days
to clean the pool, refill it and balance the
chemicals.
Unfortunately, we also learned some
lessons that will surprise many of you. It
turned out that the contractor installing
the pool covers had errantly spread the
aluminum filings when they tried to clean
up their filings around the deck and pools.
information on the Survey highlights. .
Building & Grounds-The Board
requested Larry England and his B&G
team to develop Beautification plans for 4
major areas: the boulevard vegetation
along MountainBrook Drive from Hwy
60 to the Campus and along Mountain
Vista; the hillside at the intersection of
MountainBrook and Mountain Vista; and
the Community Entrance off King’s
Ranch Road. The change order #02 for
Kitchell to replace the Mesquite water
service line was approved. A new pump
and water reservoir at the Entrance
Fountain ($55,993) was approved. Once
the pump installation is completed, the
Board plans to re-paint the Fountain
monument and sign, followed by
landscaping. Approval was given for Coy
to remove the large tree behind the
fountain and silt on Pinnacle Circle. The
Board approved legal review to clarify
certain definitions regarding Community
and Property Owner walls.
Communications- The Board approved
a 3-year contract with Mediacom for
campus-wide high speed Wi-Fi to replace
the existing CenturyLink DSL Internet
access. They also approved the purchase
of 7 new Countryman headset
microphones to be used with the existing
lavalieres. The Community will then have
8 sets of headsets and 7 lavaliers. The
proposed Electronic Sign for the
Community will be demonstrated April 1
at 2:00. This sign to replace the outdated
activity sign will be discussed at the next
Secondly, and most disturbing, a very
small group of residents took on a
vigilante mentality with death threats and
unnecessary harassment of our valuable
employees. This has to stop! Future
incidents like this where our resident’s get
out of control will result in us calling in
the Sheriff.
Again, we are all sorry the pool was out
for this extended period. We appreciate
your understanding.
We have assigned the new Board
Committee Liaison members and are
actively working with these critical
groups to move forward and meet your
needs.
Board meeting.
Finance and Administration -The Class
Instruction policy for residents was
approved. MBV will be reimbursed 15%
for facility use on for-profit instruction.
Tami Tack provided the February
Treasurer’s report and the Board approved
a $200 per month accrual for bad debt.
The First Services Residential expenditure
policy will increase spending limits from
$1000 to $2500 was approved.
The Board Liaison Committee
assignments were finalized. Gary Molzen
is assigned to 5-Year Planning; Ron Olm
is assigned to Budget & Finance; Rick
Peters is assigned to Buildings/Grounds
and Activities; Gene Prescott will manage
the First Services Relationship and
Planning & Design; Leonard Schroeder
will continue on the Architecture
Committee; and Jerry Stevenson is
assigned to Communications. (See the
Board Liaison in this issue).
First Services Residential Manager’s
Report -Rick Burman updated the Board
on the completion of the west pool cover.
He also has secured agreement by the
Contractor to reimburse us for the pool
outage they caused. He is also replacing
the Community flagpole which was
damaged. Rick reviewed the letter of
sincere appreciation from the Genesis
Food Bank program for the MBV $500
donation.
The Board meeting was adjourned
ahead of schedule.

VILLAGE THEATRE
Bill Wash
"I have only one rule in acting - trust the
Director and give him heart and soul" (Ava
Gardner). The cast of Said The Spider To
The Spy did just that. With heart and soul,
they gave directors, Kathy Whitacre and
Merry Brennan four outstanding
performances. At the end of their last
performance, Gary Stemple invited the
audience to join with the cast in recognizing
Kathy and Merry's success as first time
directors. Kathy and Merry were each
presented with a personalized gift and a
bouquet of roses. Hugs, thank yous, some
tears and special memories of an evening
that Kathy and Merry will never forget. And
with the closing of one curtain, another
curtain opens.
The next curtain will open to our 2016
play, Where There's A Will, There's A
Relative, a comedy in two acts by Roger
Karshner. The play will again be codirected by Kathy Whitacre and Merry
Brennan, who by now have this director
business "all figured out". Auditions were
held for three male rolls and three female
rolls. Kathy and Merry were elated with the
turn out for the readings and are excited to
announce that they have awarded four rolls
to actors who will perform in a play for the
first time in MountainBrook. The new
performers are Karleen Huffman, Kathy
Buelow, David Huffman and Jim Mosier.
Returning actors who were awarded roles
are Pat Hardie and Dick Brennan. Kathy
and Merry thanked those who did not get a
role and invited them to become active in
the MBV Theatre, to attend our board
meetings and to volunteer to assist in our
next production. Next month we will
announce the results of the voting to replace
members of the board whose terms have
expired.

COMMITTEE LIAISON ROLES
Jerry Stevenson
A board liaison is a member of the current
board. Each liaison attends their committee’s
meetings and takes back to the Board
information necessary to keep things
functioning. They also are available to answer
board questions when necessary.
These are exciting times for Committee
and Board members. There are 3 new faces
on the Board and many volunteers serving
on our core Committees. Keeping our
Community synchronized and moving
forward is a large task but we have a strong
bench to maximize the greatness of
MountainBrook! Soon we will have the
Mesquite renovation completed, the
Fountain operational and the Community
will be focusing on future plans for all our
benefit.
Ron Olm is the Board Liaison for the 5Year
Planning
Committee
(Keith
Charpentier, Chair). Ron will be working
with this longer-range planning Team to
extract the valuable input from the
Community-wide Survey. This data will
feed directly into the 2015-6 MBV Board
priorities. The key members of the Team
crafted this comprehensive survey and are
now polishing up the final report. This will
provide immediate focus for short term
priorities and quick-hits in our "Spruce-up"
campaign for both Buildings and
landscaping. In addition, this Survey lays
the groundwork for remodels and
beautification enhancements and gives us
valuable insight into the Communities
changing appetite for Activities and
Recreation.
Rick Peters has two Liaison roles-Buildings and Grounds (Larry England,
Chair) and Activities (Claudia Vaughn,
Chair). Buildings and Grounds is finalizing
the Fountain pump and reservoir
recommendations. In addition to painting
the Fountain structure and MountainBrook
sign, they will also be working with Coy to
revamp the landscaping from the Fountain
along MountainBrook Drive. Rick will
also be championing new and expanded
activities to keep pace with our evolving
needs. Both these critical Committees
affect us every day and Rick, Larry and
Claudia will also be looking for new
Volunteers to join these groups.
Ron Olm, is very excited to continue
working with the Budget and Finance team
(Tami Tack, Chair). As we pay down the
costs for the Mesquite remodel, it is critical
that we pace our expenditures for other
short-term priorities to "spruce-up" the
main Entrances, the fitness area, Sunset
furniture and upgrade our dated Event sign
and Superstition Projector system.
Jerry Stevenson is focusing the on the
Communications Team (Peggy Malsom,
Chair) and its sub-Committees to
strengthen
our
Community
Communications from the Board; from
First Services Residential; from all the
Committees to MBV and improving the
Community
Spirit
throughout
MountainBrook. Continuous improvement
in our key delivery systems--e-Mail blasts,
the Mountaineer (Cis Haines, Editor), the
MBVAZ.org web site (Chris Bukovac,
Chair), our multi-media systems (Tom
Stolaberger, Chair) and the Annual
Directory are critical. Jerry will be working
with the Team to maximize the impact of
timely communications to us all (full time,
seasonal, renters and MBV guests). The
very important Safety Committee (Mike
Worthy, Chair) will be focusing on road and
intersection safety early this quarter.
Leonard Schroeder will continue as the
Liaison (Chair) and work closely with Bill
Pritchard (Vice-Chair) in the critical role of
the Architectural Committee.
This
seasoned group continues to guide our
Community with thoughtful and aesthetic
changes to our homes.
Gene Prescott is closing out the
Mesquite Remodel with the Ad Hoc
Planning and Design Committee (Sue
Wright, Chair). This will include a postproject review of the remodel process and
financials. Gene is the primary interface
with our outsourced management Team run
by Rick Burman. First Services Residential
provides us with critical day-to-day
operations support (Marc and Dirk) for our
pools and buildings. Rick also coordinates
our landscape and custodial maintenance.
We all appreciate the Volunteerism at
MountainBrook. Your Board and your
Committees are here to meet your needs
and ensure we continue to have a
financially sound and vibrant HOA
community that you and your visitors can
love and enjoy for years to come.

JIM AND THE
TRUNKFUL OF
WATERMELONS
Peggy Malsom
Dad called this week to tell
me a childhood friend of mine
back in Idaho had passed away. His
name was Jim and he was my girlfriend’s
younger brother by two years. So I knew
him all my life without really knowing him.
Do you know what I mean? He was always
around as little brothers tend to be, but we
didn’t pay that much attention to him. He
was cute, blonde and his mother’s favorite.
We were too busy to pay much attention.
Until he turned thirteen.
The church we attended had a large, active
teen group. The age restriction was 13-18, so
turning 13 allowed each person to join and
was as much of a rite of passage as moving
from the kids’ table to the adult table at
Thanksgiving dinner. The highlight of every
summer was camp meeting which drew
attendees from surrounding states. During
that week the youth group always went on an
outing which was pretty tame by today’s
standards. It was anticipated mostly as a
chance to be out from under the constant
watchful eyes of parents and church officials.
It was fun.
The year Jim turned thirteen he piled into
the backseat of my 1958 Chevy Impala
convertible. We had loaded all the
watermelons for the outing into the trunk
earlier and crowded in cheek to jowl in those
pre-seat belt days. I was behind the wheel
waiting my turn to pull out when Jim stood
up and took off his jeans and shirt. I didn’t
think a thing of it. He was like a little brother
to me and besides he was wearing his swim
trunks. We were all wearing our swim suits
under our clothes.
The next thing I knew, we had been
reported to the church leaders who marched
out to the car and threw us off the church
grounds for breaking the rule about no
shorts on campus. Our
protestations were ignored as
were ordered out of line.
I pulled out of line hurt,
furious and confused, but as I
looked in the rearview mirror, I saw two
carloads of friends following us. We drove to
a favorite swimming hole on the side of a
canal and had our own picnic feasting on
watermelon until we couldn’t eat any more.
There were many more camp meetings
and fishing and hunting trips with his family
and ours. After all it was Idaho. But a guy
only turns 13 once. I just bet he still
remembered a day when he was thirteen on
the banks of an Idaho canal with a carload of
fifteen and sixteen year old girls in their twopiece swim suits with the radio blasting
tunes, dancing, jumping in the water to cool
off, and eating the hearts out of watermelons.
It’s not a big story, that day at the
swimming hole with Jim and the gang. He
was around for two decades of my life, but
when he passed it had been years since I had
seen him. Yet, what I’m left with is precious.
It is a time capsule of a bygone time when
innocence and anticipation reigned. When
perfect happiness was a ’58 Chevy with the
top down, friends, and a trunk full of
purloined watermelons.

National and International Speaker, on Islamic Terrorism,
Dr. Zuhi Jasser, came to MountainBrook Village.
Pam Burks
Winston Churchill said: "Courage is rightly
esteemed the first of human qualities because it
is the quality that guarantees all others." Thanks
to the courage of our own Sheriff Paul Babeu
and Dr. Zuhdi Jasser for the passion to protect
us and speak the truth!
The Gold Canyon Republican Club at their
March meeting was deeply honored to have Dr.
M. Zuhdi Jasser as their guest speaker. Dr.
Jasser is not only a renowned cardiologist, but
as Glenn Beck stated: “Jasser is one of the most
courageous and relentless pursers of truth and
freedom in the Muslim world.”
Dr. Jasser speaks boldly all over the globe on
the truth about the Muslim faith and how its
tenants do not agree with the ruthless acts of
Muslim groups such as ISIS – a group he
clearly identifies as Islamic terrorists.
Dr. Jasser spoke at length (nearly two hours)
with over 60 attendees present, on the history of
the Muslim faith, how it got to where it is today,
and how radical Islam throughout history has
subverted the
truth about
Muslim beliefs;
and, Jasser
postulates,
continues to do
so in these 21st
century times.
He was clear in his comments that America
and its allies must do whatever it can to deal
with radical Islam through military power and
force. Yet, he suggests, the ultimate turning
around of the misguided Muslim perspectives
that are prevalent today is through changing the
cultural beliefs of the Muslim community – that
is, change from within. Muslim communities
all over the world must join forces, proposes
Jasser, to destroy this radical brutal philosophy.
There are two major Islamic evils that we
must deal with, Arab fascism -that at this
moment rules in many parts of the world - and
radical Islam beliefs that drives groups like
ISIS. The destruction of both of these
philosophies must be completed if we are to be
successful in our battle against these enemies of
humankind, said Jasser.
A Q&A period was held and was followed
by a book signing.
Pinal County Sherriff Paul Babeu introduced
Dr. Jasser, with welcoming and closing remarks
by Republican Club Chairman, Pam Burks.
Dr. Jasser’s book, “A Battle for the Soul of
Islam” is available at Amazon.com.

Lights,
Camera,
Action
Peggy Malsom
The chattering crowd of over two
hundred MountainBrook friends finds
their seats in the Superstition Center. The
lights dim and a hush falls over the crowd.
The music swells as the curtain opens to a
stage that is set for another great
performance. Weekly, monthly, yearly as
this scene is repeated, we take some things
for granted. The lights, sound, and music
will always be there exactly when they are
supposed to be. While magic happens on
the stage, however, it is dedicated hard
work and countless hours by our AudioVisual group that make it all possible.
They are the unsung heroes and it is time
they receive some overdue recognition.
All this work is done by five dedicated
guys: Al Lehman, Rollie Maki, Rick
Peters, Jay Raleigh and Tom Stoalabarger.
Tom Stoalabarger moved to MBV in
1993 from Battle Ground, Washington.
He was an electronics tech in the Navy
and has been “messing with electronics
ever since.” When the Superstition Center
was built, Tom and Jack Virdin were
responsible for the initial sound and
lighting systems. It takes him 7-10 hours
weekly just to do the audio visual work
required to record the Tuesday Coffee and
News. Tom is currently working through
the Communications Committee to replace
the limited single projector and screen
with two of each, one on each side of the
stage, for improved viewing. His plan for
improvements would “like to see profits
made by volunteer productions such as the
players and the chorus be utilized
exclusively for stage improvements in the
Superstition Center.” Talk to Tom. He
will be happy to share his vision.
Did you know MBV has a Red Light
District? According to Al Lehman, he
enjoys working in the Audio Visual booth
which is sometimes known as “the cave”
or the “Red Light District.” He works the
lights for the Village Voices and Village
Players. For other groups he runs both
lights and audio and sometimes the
LtoR: Rick Peters, Tom Stoalabarger, Rollie Maki and Jay Raleigh
projector and TVs. He started operating
audio-visual equipment while in high
school, continued in college and later sold
specialized video equipment during his
work career. Recently, Al “dug out the
portable sound system” for the Sunset
Center which had been buried in storage
and nearly forgotten. It is now in use and
Al is willing to operate it or teach others
how it is assembled and works. Al and
Sandy moved to MBV in 2007. Prior to
that they lived in Scottsdale, Paradise
Valley and Roosevelt Lake for a total of
fifty years in the Valley. When they aren’t
travelling, Al is “usually available to
operate our systems as needed.”
Jay Raleigh-“Just to be clear, some
people know me as Jay and others know
me as Steve…I always say that my friends
call me Steve while my employers and the
bank call me Jay.” He laughs as he jokes,
“Just don’t call me late for dinner.” He
and his wife Mary have lived in MBV
permanently since June 2012, but have
been visiting the Valley since 1994 from
St. Paul, Minnesota. As the school
photographer lighting was a part of that
activity and stage lighting seemed like a
natural extension of photography. He
worked as a lighting technician for many
years as a member of several Saint Paul
community theater companies. Here at
MBV he has enjoyed lighting productions
for the Village Players, Game Shows, The
Follies and many of the guest performers
including Dave Carl, Rockabilly
Christmas, Cash and Cline, Danny Vernon
and the Best of the 60s & 70s. “As a
member of the AV team, I hope to be
involved in developing a plan for
improvements to the Superstition Center.”
Thanks Jay, errr, Steve.
Rick Peters has lived in MountainBrook
Village for eighteen years, is currently on
the Board, and previously served as
President of the Board of Directors. Prior
to moving to MBV he lived in
Massachusetts and still retains more than a
hint of a charming accent. He has been
involved with Audio Visual about ten
years when it was called Sound & Lights.
He prefers working the sound over the
lights, but he can do both. He puts in a lot
of volunteer hours and wants to spread the
word that “We need people to volunteer
for the AV committee in order to spread
out the work.” Rick’s wish list includes
updating the lighting in the Superstition
Center which he classifies as a “need”. He
is also looking forward to the installation
of dual screens and projectors.
Rollie and Mary Ann Maki moved to
MBV from Minnesota twelve years ago.
Rollie began volunteering with the Audio
Visual group about eight years after
moving here. He did take a radio speech
class in high school, but that’s the extent
of his prior experience. He usually works
with the sound for the Village Voices,
Band and other events such as our recent
Follies. He cites his experience with the
microphones at the recent Follies as a
problem he would like to see improved.
The difficulty is communication between
the stage and sound booth requiring a lot
of running back and forth. There is
currently no way to inform the sound
booth of last minute changes. Still, he
enjoys volunteering and the people he
meets.
The next time you attend a performance
at the Superstition Center, be sure to seek
out these guys and say Thanks. After all,
the show must go on, but it doesn’t go on
without them.

Artist of the Month
Frank Jantonio was born and raised in the Cleveland Ohio area. Although the majority
of his Ohio friends winter in Florida, he chooses to spend his time in Arizona. His daughter lives in
Mesa and he enjoys being close to her and family. Frank has been wintering here for 15 years with his
wife of 56 years, Tina.
He loves the beauty of the Southwest and many of his paintings reflect this beauty. Frank teaches
oil painting classes in MountainBrook Village. He loves to paint and to share his experiences and
knowledge of painting with his students. His studio is in the garage of the casita where he and Tina
reside for six months of the year. He enjoys it when friends and neighbors stop by to chat while he
paints. Frank accepts commissioned work and also sells some of his paintings.
Attack of the Earworm
Marilee Pritchard
Is there no way to control this annoying
malady? If you are unfamiliar with the term,
this is a condition which strikes after you hear
a song and, try as you might, you cannot get it
out of your head. Last year I wrote about one
such occasion that occurred after I heard the
song ‘City of New Orleans’ at the volunteer
luncheon. Once again the Earworm struck:
Friday night at the MBV Follies. To all
involved, it was a great show, and who would
not agree that the new curtain added an air of
increased professionalism to the show.
Okay, here we go regarding the Earworm.
Who would expect to hear Lynrd Skynrd’s
1973 Country Rock hit “Gimme Three Steps”
as part of the show? I suspect many of the
attendees have no idea who Lynrd Skynrd is
and maybe had never heard the song before
Friday night. As a public service
announcement I will share with you some
abbreviated rock history involving Lynrd
Skynrd. The band was formed in the late ‘60’s
hitting its peak years in the early to mid ‘70’s.
On a fateful trip in 1977 three members of the
band and all others on board their chartered
plane were killed when the plane crashed in a
dense forest area in Mississippi. Sadly, the
band disbanded not to perform again until
surviving band members reunited in the late
‘80’s.
Thanks to the revenge of the Earworm, on
Friday I was cursed and was forced to sit at the
computer, late into the night, Googling you
tube videos. There I sat, watching the original
Lynrd Skynrd performing “Gimme Three
Steps”. One thing that struck me about the
band was the amount of hair!!!! The days of
rock stars with ultra long hair. But hey, people
talk about women and their hair styles??? Just
think back over the years and the different
styles men have worn their hair.
Not too many years ago I asked my younger
brother to give me his comb. To my
amazement he replied that he didn’t carry a
comb. According to him, whatever he did to
his hair before he left the house in the morning
lasted the entire day. Note to self: don’t buy
stock in the Ace Comb Company. Quite a few
years ago my husband, Bill, would go to a
BEAUTICIAN and get what we called a ‘curly
perm’. You have to know, he also had a full
beard and a mustache at the time. Grizzly
Adams meets Shaft???? He had one of those
pick devices to help him achieve maximum
fullness. As I recall, the pick was black plastic
and there was a clenched fist embossed on the
handle: ‘STYLIN’ ! We had one friend who
chose a ‘Mullet’ as his coiffure; this guy could
barely pass a mirror and not ‘check himself
out’. Of course at the other end of the
spectrum is a guy who was married to a coworker of mine. George wore a toupee, not a
good toupee either. So bad, if someone didn’t
know his name they would refer to him as ‘the
guy with the rug’. These days so many men
are shaving their head I hope George has given
in and ditched ‘the rug’.
Now my Earworm has been cured; however
I have a question for all of you. Do you think
we will ever hear any women approach an
eligible gentleman and utter the famous words
“Kookie, Kookie, lend me your comb”?

PINOCHLE
Ron Hofmeister
The ladies group that meets Tuesdays at 1:00 had the following
winners last month. First place went to Diane Rasmussen. Three
players achieved second place: Suzanne Kadlec, Theresa
Szatkowski and Diane Kissner. If you want to learn to play
pinochle come by at 12:45 Tuesday.
The Thursday night group only had one six hundred plus score this
month and it was achieved by Delores O’Fallon. Her score was 618. Either Delores is
very lucky or a good pinochle player. Your reporter thinks that both apply. Since scores
were low this month Richard and Jean Young won twice with scores of 544 and 566
respectively. As you can see from the low scores we play this game mainly to have fun.
Come join us.

tasks. Bisque pieces, specialty glazes and brushes are available for purchase from ceramic
shops in the area. Firing is done at no charge to the ceramist.
We have several certified ceramics teachers available in our group who have a world of
experience and ideas for creating lovely pieces of ceramic ware and they will help you get

MOUNTAINBROOK TENNIS CLUB
On February 21st, twenty-six members of the MBV Tennis Club traveled to Trilogy,
off Power Road, to play in the annual tournament between the two clubs. This event is
organized by Sally Lickar of MBV and a representative of the Trilogy group. The two
groups alternate in hosting the event, though the tournament is always held at Trilogy
where adequate facilities are available.
The tournament consists of competition in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles
with players matched by skill level. Twenty-eight matches were played over
approximately six hours, with each match played in a one hour time frame. MBV has
come out with the most wins each year since the tournament began, but Trilogy was the
winner on this particular day. Good competitive matches encouraged cheering from
the spectators supporting their team members. The competition is always friendly. The
host group provides for food and beverages throughout the day. Next year’s tournament
is already scheduled for February 20, 2016 with the MBV Tennis Club serving as host.
Members and/or spouses have already volunteered to help with the food.
Round Robin continues on M,W,F’s at 8am. Anyone wanting to play is most
welcome. Thursday’s at 3pm Dixie Nelson continues her free clinics, all are welcome.

VILLAGE VOICES
Bill Wash
As the curtains opened for the Spring Concert, the audiences were caught up in
"Ya-ho Celebration! Celebrate the good times, Com on!" The It's A Celebration took
place at a home town reunion with a special couple who meet and reminisce as they
travel through time recalling their adventures in life and love and their "dancing"(?).
Some songs were lively and exciting while others were sentimental. The choir
thanked our veterans for their service to our great country as members of the Army,
Navy, Marines and the Air Force marched to the stage behind the American flag. The
concert closed with the audience joining the choir in singing God Bless The USA.
The choir was directed by Patty Sobek, accompanied by Marty Robison on the piano,
with the assistance of Jane Gehrt, concert coordinator with Karen Carnahan and Jerry
Olm narrating. The choir will now go dark until Wednesday, September 2 at 1:00 pm
in the Superstition Center when practice begins for the Christmas Concert.
