Pete gets the chop Pete Tivey, Volvo Parts Supervisor in Cambridge, agreed to have his ponytail chopped off on Friday, 23rd November. Pete’s colleagues at the Parts Centre pledged an amazing £276 to see Pete, an avid rock fan and bass player, lose his trademark ponytail in aid of this year’s Children in Need appeal. teamwork The in-house journal of the Marshall Group of Companies Retired inspector clocks up the miles of which he is Life Vice President; he is also a member of the East Anglian Veterans Time Trial Association. During 2010 alone Peter has rode in 45 races, gaining a trophy, 14 medals and two East Anglian age records at 10 and 25 miles. Peter has been a cyclist since his 20s but since retiring has totalled approximately 60,000 miles during racing and training, 500 of which were during 2010. It’s easy to become inactive once you have retired, but retired former aircraft and machine shop inspector, Peter Baumber is an example to us all. At the age of 80, Peter is a keen cyclist and a member of the Cambridge Cycling Club, Peter, who is a member of the Marshall 30 Club, is keen to encourage anyone who is retired or approaching retirement to get active, not just by cycling but by taking part in many other pursuits. Great advice Peter - keep cycling! New Year 2011 Macmillan Coffee Morning Update Following a successful Macmillan Coffee Mornings at Cambridge and around the Group in September, well over £4,500 was raised for the chairty to help those living with Cancer. The organisers of these events would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to those who sold raffle tickets, made cakes, donated prizes and supported the events. RAFA Wings Appeal The RAF Association’s Wings Appeal was delighted to recently collect over £480 during a visit to the Works. The RAF Association holds its Wings appeal each year to raise funds to support any members of the RAF, past or present and their families, who need it. MA supports local team The Wisbech St Mary Under 16s football team was delighted recently when Marshall Aerospace offered to sponsor the club to allow them to buy some new kit. The team is currently enjoying success with an unbeaten run in the Cambs Colts U16 ‘A’ League, Cambs U16 League Cup and Cambs U16 County Cup. From Cambridge to Casablanca A group of six cyclists arrived in Casablanca on Friday, 13th August having completed the 1700 mile trip from Cambridge to Casablanca in 27 days, cycling 80 miles a day. The Motor Group helped the team on their way with a donation to buy their camping equipment for the trip. The group were raising funds for the Acorn House for Sick Children at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and not only reached their target of £5,000 but surpassed it by raising over £8,000. Marshall SDG opens new offices see page 12 for details Chairman’s comments with the Group, two who had achieved 40 years and one who had achieved 50 years, bringing our totals in these three categories up to 679, 231 and 31 respectively. A truly remarkable record. First and foremost, I would like to wish all readers a very happy and successful New Year. Also I would like to welcome our new Chief Executive of Marshall Aerospace, Steve Fitz-Gerald, and our new Airport Director, Archie Garden. We are currently working through some difficult trading conditions affecting all our industries and there are some tough times ahead of us. It is at times like this that I am encouraged by the spirit of our people and our core values which have sustained us for 101 years. Some of these were in many ways encapsulated for me during the second week in November, during which I had the privilege of being involved in the following special activities:• On Tuesday, our Apprentice Awards through which we welcome and encourage high-quality youngsters, as we have done without a break for almost 90 years. • On Wednesday, our Learner of the Year Awards recognised people of all ages in our Companies who have extended their knowledge and are achieving great things for our Companies and our customers. • On Thursday, our Lunch and Presentations for Long Service in which we particularly recognised our nine colleagues who had achieved 30 years of continuous service • On Friday, we held a Reception for representatives of the 22 companies in Cambridge which had responded to our call to contribute £1,000 each of sponsorship to the Midsummer Common, 5th November fireworks in Cambridge, enabling the event to take place. These fireworks are a great local event, organised and partly funded by Cambridge City Council, but dependant on a major sponsor, which we had been pleased to be in our Centennial Year, but in 2010 no single sponsor could be found. • Finally, on Friday evening I was invited to the Annual Reception and Lecture at Addenbrooke’s Hospital to present the biennial Sir Arthur Marshall Emergency Department Improvement Award to Dr Ahmed a researcher in that Department. The week ended on yet another high note when Daksh Gupta circulated news of the amazing achievement of our Motor Group which has now risen to 10th position in the national league table of the UK motor groups and second largest privately owned motor group, an achievement of which we can all be enormously proud. It is a further endorsement of our success following the 10 National Awards our Motor Group, our Dealerships and Marshall Leasing have won during 2010. It was a week which encapsulated so many of our values, including training, staff Learner of the Year initiatives, long service, community, remembrance and achievement, in addition to our normal day by day work for our customers. A week to remember! Wednesday, 10th November saw the second annual Group Learner of the Year Awards event. The Chairman, Sir Michael, opened the award ceremony with the following words; There were many other things going on throughout the Group every hour and every day of that week involving you and your colleagues. “We started these Awards in 2009 as part of our Centennial celebrations and it was so successful that we all felt it was important to do it again this year. We will be recognising some very special people who have exceeded the call of duty, built on their own learning and have made some amazing achievements on behalf of the Group and of our customers, through their enquiring minds and their perseverance. It was uplifting to see our team working on the A318 fuel tank installation during the holiday period between Christmas and the New Year. Subsequently it was great news when Marshall Aerospace was chosen to become the contractor for NATO C-130/L-100 requirements in Europe. I was also proud to take our Group Non-Executive Directors to see some of the special High Performance Mobile Shelters manufactured by MLS. During December we were delighted to welcome Teversham Primary School to our Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony, to host the Mayor of the City of Cambridge to our annual Air Training Corps Presentation Evening, and to see the very happy Children’s Christmas Tea Party in our Gipsy Moth Restaurant organised by Dave Curry and other Sports & Social Club volunteers. One lesson I have learned is that learning is a lifetime experience. It never stops! Our Learner of the Year Awards are very important as they recognise exceptional perseverance and initiative. They are only awarded to very special people of whom we are enormously proud. I would like to give all the recipients and runners up my own personal thanks and congratulations.” The Group Learners for 2010 are: Marshall Aerospace Nominations Cheyne Cikoja (Winner); Leon Smith (Highly Commended); James Callaghan (Highly Commended); Michael Shingfield (Highly Commended); Philip Wright (Nomination); Chris Clark (Nomination); Sara Scott (Nomination); Alistair Irvine (Nomination); Andrew Martin (Peer Nomination); Andrew Midgley (Peer Nomination). Marshall Motor Group proudly supported Sarah and Rachael with their quest. Following the trip, as part of the fundraising effort, each team sold their car at auction. The undoubted stars of this were John Cook and Dez Thompson of Bury St Edmunds who sold their left hand drive Kia in its unique Zebra paintjob (pictured right), for no less than five times the purchase price of £250, leaving Ben £1,250 better off as a result. John and Dez were also awarded the winners’ trophy for the event. Steve Ingham and Daniel Cumberworth of Peterborough Toyota came second. Airbus Marshall Aerospace is currently undertaking a programme for Airbus to upgrade A318 Elite corporate jets to carry two additional fuel tanks at the rear of the cargo compartment. The tanks have been designed and made by Marshall Aerospace, and the aircraft modifications include Marshall Aerospace and Airbus detailed design changes to aircraft structure and systems. The overall changes are being covered by EASA and FAA STCs (Supplemental Type Certificates) and are being progressed under Marshall Aerospace approvals. Engineering and Production Liaison has been required with Airbus teams in Toulouse, Hamburg, Dresden and Filton, and small teams of Airbus staff have spent many weeks at Cambridge in recent months, including production personnel whose Airbus overalls became a regular sight in the canteen last summer. The trial installation aircraft came to the end of its modification programme and a short Flight Test programme was concluded on 12th January, following a highly successful test flight which commenced on Saturday 8th January. Marshall Test Pilot, Mark Robinson played a major part in the test flying programme which was headed up by Airbus Test Pilot, Frank Chapman. A total of 11 hours of test flying was logged with an amazing 3 flights completed on the last day. By the end of January this aircraft 8 Teamwork New Year 2011 will depart Cambridge for installation of its VIP interior in the United States, finally then being delivered later this year to its operator. All being well, it is hoped Marshall Aerospace will see many sets of tanks being manufactured under the ongoing production phase of this programme, and it is also hoped that many aircraft will transit through Cambridge for modification and tank installation. Associated with the programme, Tom Williams, Airbus Executive Vice President Programmes, who reports directly to the Airbus President and CEO, Tom Enders, visited the Company on 16th December. Marshall Aerospace has delivered and installed its first set of vital Medevac Role Change modification equipment to the Norwegian Armed Forces. It is the first time, in Norway, that certification has been issued for a role change modification of this kind to be operated by a commercial airline. The equipment was designed to change a civil aircraft into a new class of ‘air ambulance/mobile intensive care unit’. Norwegian Defence Minister, Grete Faremo, said: “We are now able to transform a civilian aircraft into a large air ambulance in less than 24 hours. This has significantly strengthened the Armed Forces medical evacuation capacity. This is important for our troops in Afghanistan and it is a good example of how the military can contribute to civilian society. This valuable resource may also be used in the event of major accidents and natural disasters all over the world.” As the project lead, Marshall Aerospace worked very closely to specify, design, develop, produce, deliver, install and certificate the Medevac Role Change system with Nodin Aviation, the Norwegian MOD Procurement Organisation (NDLO), Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), the Norwegian Armed Forces Medical Service, together with a range of specialist medical equipment suppliers and the European Civil Aviation Authority EASA. MLS demonstrates capabilities at New Technology & Capability Centre Chariots of Fire Whilst the markets in which we operate have changed, these values have played a key role in our heritage and remain just as important now as ever. Teams from Marshall took part in the annual Chariots of Fire Race on Sunday, 23rd September. This year’s Race was raising money for two local charities: Home-Start, Cambridge and Wallace Cancer Care. The fastest Marshall team in this year’s event was from the Aero Academy who received the Marshall Trophy from Sir Michael Marshall. To ensure that we focus on the point that people are at the heart of our success, we have often tried to benchmark our ability to provide a great working environment and for a number of years we have run several in-house surveys to judge our performance. An example of this was the Marshall Aerospace 2009 Transformation Survey which yielded valuable insights. But for the last three years Marshall Motor Group and Marshall Leasing have used an external company, the Great Place to Work™ Institute. The value of hiring an external impartial company has been immediately apparent with the most important part of the process being feedback sessions and analysis at each of our Motor Group branches and divisions. These have become wonderful forums for continuous improvement. UGVs, ISTAR, Manoeuvre, Logisitics Precision Attack and Medical Systems were on display at the opening of Marshall SDG Technology and Capability Centre in Petersfield. Following on from this, it has been agreed that for 2011 we will for the very first time be holding a GROUP Employee Survey. This will allow all of the Group’s Operating Companies to look at how we are doing as employers and to compare ourselves against our competitors. More importantly it will allow us to listen to all of our employees. There will be more details to follow, but the survey will take place in July 2011. As a result of the feedback from the Great Place to Work™ Institute survey, the employees in Motor Group / Leasing have seen their overall rating as a great place to work increase dramatically each year. At the recent Motor Group conference, the management teams of our Honda business in Scarborough and Vauxhall business in Leicester were recognised for their exceptional achievements in providing a great place to work for their respective teams. New Year 2011 Teamwork 13 Movember Moustaches The Highest Christmas tree in Cambridge Once again Marshall of Cambridge put up the tallest Christmas Tree in Cambridge. Not quite 101ft high to match the number of years Marshall has traded in Cambridge since its foundation in the Motor Business on 1st October 1909; the tall and very elegant Christmas Tree nonetheless added enormous cheer to Newmarket Road on the outskirts of the City. As always, the Christmas Tree lights were switched on in conjunction with the Head Teacher, children, parents and governors from Teversham Church of England Primary School just the other side of the Airport. The School is sponsored by Marshall of Cambridge and this year an art competition was held within the School with a theme of ‘The Battle of Britain’. The winning artist was Amir Ben Hafsia, who was invited to join Marshall of Cambridge Chief Operating Officer, Robert Marshall, in turning on the lights. Prior to switching on the lights, the children sang some carols, accompanied on the guitar by their Head Teacher, Liz Jenkin. Well this will all be down to the Marshall Mo’s taking part in the month of Movember. Championed by the Marshall Young Persons Group and lead by Jamie Maguire (Marshall Aerospace) the Marshall Team members made a sterling effort by growing a ‘Mo’ (moustache) to raise awareness and funds towards the battle against prostate cancer. The Movember challenge is simple: start 1st November clean shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month and raise money for cancer that affects men. With the addition of a Bombardier Challenger 300 to its existing fleet of Citation Bravo and XLS and several new members to the team, including James Hunt and Cheryl Elliott-Edwards seen right, the skies truly are the limit for Marshall Executive Aviation! The climax of the month was a ‘Mo Down’ held on 30th Movember at the Gypsy Moth Restaurant to calculate the total raised and award a number of prizes to those who took part. The judging panel was made up of Robert Marshall, Terry Holloway, Kevin Patterson and Richard Martin. Business travellers, dignitaries, pop stars and film stars travelling worldwide have already enjoyed the unique experience of this ultimate jet and Marshall World Class hospitality since its inaugural flight in November. Cambridge Airport was one of the few airfields in the United Kingdom which kept open through the week of snow and disruption during the first week of December, which closed many other airfields around the United Kingdom. Pictured above: Robert Marshall with Archie Garden. The airports subject to disruption included Luton and Gatwick. During this weeklong period the Company took in a number of diversion flights from other airfields. This remarkable feat, which is a tribute to the team at Cambridge keeping ice and snow off the runway was given wide coverage on BBC Television. “It’s a hell of a week to take on the role of Airport Director!”. Thus spoke Archie Garden as Heathrow is closed, Gatwick is having huge difficulties coping with the snow, and an Eastern Air diversion from Norwich has just landed. But we in Cambridge are still open for business thanks to a wonderful team of people running the airport. Keeping the airport open required a tremendous commitment from all airport staff, as well as colleagues from facilities, the hangars, the motor group Picture right shows Airport staff working day and night to keep the runway open. 14 Teamwork New Year 2011 break this barrier, there is still time. I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to work with this fantastic group of people at Marshall - and develop a first class customer service facility and a gateway to Cambridge that will be a huge asset for the City.
