Inland Hospital
200 Kennedy Memorial Drive, Waterville, Maine, 207-861-3000
message to our
community
I
nland is proud to be your
hometown healthcare
provider—it’s a responsibility
and privilege that we take seriously.
We are committed to being
effective and efficient in how we
care for you—and this will be more
important than ever as hospitals
are held more accountable for the
quality of your care and the costs
associated with it. As part of
EMHS, Inland isn’t just waiting
for change—we are embracing it!
We are continually improving the
quality of the care we provide,
something that is deeply ingrained
at Inland—it’s simply the
right thing to do. This long held
philosophy allows us to meet future
changes in medicine and offer you
value for your healthcare dollar. As
we go forward, our goals are
probably similar to yours:
We want you to be as healthy as
possible—so we continue to search
for and offer programs and services
that help you live healthier. If
you have a chronic disease, we’ve
added Care Managers to our family
practices who can help teach you
how to manage your health and
feel your best. If you have ideas
about other needed services, we are
always interested to hear from you!
We want you to stay as healthy
as possible—so we continue to
grow a network of primary and
specialty care providers who share
our dedication to offering high
quality, compassionate care to help
keep you healthy. From opening
Inland Family Care in downtown
Waterville, to offering a new
Weekend Care Clinic at Inland, to
strengthening our women’s services
with more OB/GYNs, Inland
is focused on your future. And
this spring, as part of our effort to
continuously enhance quality and
safety in the hospital, we will start
a major construction project that
will help us transform the way we
deliver inpatient care, including the
addition of private patient rooms.
While healthcare delivery
methods and payment models may
be changing, our commitment to
the Greater Waterville area and the
surrounding communities we serve
is only growing. Whether it’s at
Inland Hospital, our many medical
practices, at Lakewood, our
continuing care center, or our walk
in care Clinic at Walmart, our 750+
employees are here for you!

Medical Staff; John Dalton, Inland President/CEO;

At Inland, we strive to impact our
community in meaningful ways
by committing hospital resources to
improve our community’s
overall health and well-being.
We pride ourselves in developing
and fostering partnerships with
other local organizations that
share a common goal to serve our
community, help address community
health needs and enhance quality of
life for local families.
Most notably over the last year,
the OneMaine Health Collaborative
brought EMHS and other Maine
healthcare systems together to
conduct a study that identified
priority health issues. Here is a
snapshot of some of Inland’s
community outreach efforts over
the past year to effectively address
some of the most significant
challenges at the local level.
community
Children from the George J. Mitchell School summer daycare program enjoy a healthy walk on the
Inland Woods Trail.
Access to Care Inland’s 2011 health fairs
linked hundreds of residents with local healthcare
and social service resources, providing important
information on primary care providers, dental
services, and insurance options.
Chronic Disease In an effort to help
prevent and manage chronic conditions, we
provided more than 4,000 free health screenings
and risk assessments and offered hands-on
cooking classes, snowshoeing activities, trail
walks, and pre-diabetes education.
Inland offers bone density tests at the
Colby College Health & Safety Fair.
4
Through Inland’s Community
Benefit Program we donated
more than $90,000 to these
organizations and projects in 2011:
Children at the Atwood School in
Oakland enjoyed a healthy meal with
fresh ingredients grown in their vegetable
garden sponsored by Inland.
Childhood Obesity
Inland is a committed supporter of the Quarry
Road Recreation Area that offers year-round
opportunities for families to get active.
Transportation
To help get people to necessary
services and support a healthier
environment, Inland enthusiastically
supported KVCAP’s public
transportation efforts.
Economy & Quality
of Life
Understanding that supporting
a healthy community is more
than just promoting good physical
health, Inland is proud to sponsor
community-building, economic,
and cultural efforts at the Waterville
Public Library, Waterville Opera
House, Waterville Main Street,
the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter,
and more (see sidebar).
Inland helped launch “Let’s Go!
Kennebec”, supported local food
initiatives and gardening projects
at schools to encourage healthy
eating, continued improvements
on our campus and supported
efforts around the community
that promote active lifestyles.
Mental Health
& Substance Abuse
Our Community Benefit
program funded an innovative
local psychotherapy initiative as
well as many local social service
agencies, and we supported
efforts for area residents to
safely dispose of unwanted or
expired medications.

2 0 1 1 highlights
Here are just a few of the many examples of our commitment to you and the Greater Waterville area.
• R eceived “Exceeding Patient Expectations” award for fifth year in a row from Avatar, a national patient
survey company.
• O pened Inland Family Care in downtown Waterville, and established a new Inland Weekend Care Clinic.
• A ll Inland primary care practices were recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance
(NCQA) for excellence in diabetes and cardiovascular care. Also, NCQA honored the practices for creating
a new healthcare delivery model called “patient-centered medical homes,” which emphasizes the patientclinician partnership and has the primary care team coordinate care across the entire healthcare continuum.
In addition, Inland specialty practices received recognition for delivering evidence-based, patient-centered
processes. Also, Heart First received NCQA recognition for excellence in heart and stroke care.
• Implemented Computerized Provider Order Entry in the hospital which
enhances safety and quality in many ways through built in checks for
medication interactions, providing legible direction for patient care,
decision support guidance for providers, and much more. In addition,
Inland’s primary care practices started implementing an Electronic Medical
Record that allows continuity of care for patients in and out of the hospital.
• A dded more family care providers, and grew women’s health services
with the outstanding providers at Waterville OB/GYN—merging the
practice with Inland Women’s Health Care.
• E xpanded Day Surgery unit, adding four private patient rooms and
a new minor procedure room. In the Birthing Center, we added two
more labor/delivery/recovery/post-partum rooms.
• A chieved an additional five patient safety and quality goals on our
journey toward zero preventable errors in the care we provide.
10
• Inland Hospital is proud to participate in a national
patient care improvement project called “Transforming
Care at the Bedside.” The project is focused on the
hospital’s medical-surgical unit and involves staff,
patients and families working together to develop
solutions that will increase nursing time at the bedside,
decrease waste and decrease adverse events such as
falls or medication errors. The project is part of an
innovative nationwide program started by the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation.
• H onored by Kennebec Behavioral Health for being an “Outstanding Community Partner” for
integrating mental health services into primary care at the new Inland Family Care downtown.
• L akewood achieved a perfect facility survey by the Maine
Department of Health & Human Services, which denotes the
highest in quality and safety. In addition, the continuing care
center on the Inland campus received the “Excellence in Action”
award from My InnerView, a resident/patient survey company
that recognized Lakewood as being in the top 10% of 5,500
facilities nationwide.
• D onated more than $90,000 to 37 organizations for health initiatives, community-building, and
quality of life improvement efforts through Inland’s Community Benefit
Program. Also, Inland and Lakewood employees volunteered on dozens
of local boards and committees.
• L akewood was honored by Kennebec Behavioral Health‘s High
Hopes Clubhouse and Governor Paul LePage for its work training and
employing people with mental illness.

Lakewood deliver extraordinary
service to our community! In 2011
they donated more than 18,000
hours of time to our organization
and we can’t thank them enough
for choosing us to help make a
difference in people’s lives!
Thanks to the many volunteers who helped us at special Inland
events in 2011, such as the World of Women’s Wellness.
