Pastors Corner April 10, 2016 Page 2 Third Sunday of Easter Jesus Comes to Our Level Our gospel today is another appearance of the risen Lord after his resurrection. Toward the end of this gospel Jesus asks Peter three times, “Do you love me?” The actual Greek was a play on words, something that is missed in the English translation. In Greek there are three words for love: “agape” (unconditional love), “philia” (brotherly love) and “eros”(romantic or sexual love). Two of these words for love are used in today’s gospel. Jesus asks Peter the first two times do you agape me (unconditionally love)? Both times Peter responds by saying, “Lord you know that I philia you (brotherly love). The third time, Jesus changes the question and asks Peter who has been unable to respond with the unconditional/agape love, “Do you philia me.” And Peter says of course I philio you. The impact of this section deepens with understanding of the different words for love, for Jesus chooses to come to the level of love where Peter is, he doesn’t insist that Peter come to his level. Jesus always invites us to deeper love, deeper commitment and greater service. But the invitation doesn’t force us. We meet Jesus at our level, not at His. This is the wonder of the incarnation, where God comes down from heaven to our level. God loves us so much and wants us to rise to His level of unconditional love. But until we are able, God takes us where we’re at and builds from there. May our love for God grow and may our kindness toward others reflect the kind of love and understanding we see in Jesus. Peace. Fr. Paz. P. Tomás. In the Spotlight St. Gemma Galgani—April 11 Gemma Galgani was born in 1878, in a small Italian town near Lucca. At a very young age, she developed a love for prayer. Although quiet and reserved, she always had a smile for everyone. Throughout her life, Gemma was to be favored with many mystical experiences and special graces. These were often misunderstood by others, causing ridicule. Gemma suffered these heartaches in reparation, remembering that Our Lord Himself had been misunderstood and ridiculed. Gemma had an immense love for the poor, and helped them in any way she could. After her father's death, the nineteen year old Gemma cared for her seven brothers and sisters. Gemma became very ill with meningitis and was miraculously cured. In 1899, Gemma received the stigmata. Each Thursday evening, Gemma would fall into rapture and the marks of Christ’s crucifixion would appear on her body. In January of 1903, Gemma was diagnosed with tuberculosis. She died quietly in the company of the parish priest, on April 11 at age twenty-five. He said, "She died with a smile which remained upon her lips, so that I could not convince myself that she was really dead." She was canonized on May 2, 1940, only thirty-seven years after her death. “Oh love, oh infinite love! …..Oh love of my Jesus! ….Let Your love penetrate my all; from You I want nothing else. My God, my God, I love You. But, perhaps I love You too little, oh Jesus?….Oh, if all were to know how beautiful Jesus is, how loving He is! They would all die of love. And yet, how is it that He is so little loved?” Our Parish Family St. Vincent de Paul We wish to thank everyone that participated in any way with our food drive. Our Easter program was outstanding. Everyone received a turkey or ham for their Easter dinner. We sincerely appreciate all your help in this mission of assisting the needy. If you wish to become a member of St. Vincent de Paul, give us a call at 9423222 or come over to 45058 any M-W-TH or Sat between 9am 12 noon. God Bless you all. Lay Fraternity of Charles de Foucauld The Lay Fraternity of Charles de Foucauld will have its next monthly meeting on Sunday, April 17th at 2:00 p.m. We will meet at the facilitator’s home for Scripture/Faith Sharing followed by Eucharistic Adoration at St. Junipero Serra Church and dinner. Page 6 Vocations Corner Ask the question Once we have begun the work of preparing our hearts, the next step is to ask the right question. Often we desire to know the answer but forget to slow down long enough to ask the question or even consider what the question is. As we look to the future there may be a multitude of questions swirling around. Discernment requires that we be deliberate about the questions we ask and how we ask them.
