In the mid 1800’s it was the work of William Pryor Letchworth who purchased 1,000 acres that make up the now 14,350 acre park and preserved this national treasure for generations to come by deeding it over to the State of New York in 1907. Mr. Letchworth valued hard work and charity. He sought to focus his efforts later in life towards preservation and felt compelled to repay society for his financial success. It was the Seneca Indians who honored Letchworth by calling him Hai-wa-ye-is-tah, “he who does the right thing.” It was Letchworth who worked relentlessly to preserve the Native American history of the Genesee Valley. His work included the creation of the “Council Grounds,” Mary Jemison memorial and the preservation of the ancient Seneca Council House and the Gardeau cabin. Letchworth State Park, voted Best State Park in the USA, has something for everyone! Hikers can choose among 66 miles of hiking trails. One such place is Attica Correctional Facility, one of the oldest operating correctional facilities in New York. Constructed in the 1930’s, Attica Correctional Facility was home to one of the most infamous prison uprisings of the 1970’s. The maximum security prison gained national media attention for the riot in 1971. Because of this event, many pop references include the Attica riots. Wellknown celebrities such as John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson and John Lennon made note of Attica in their professional works. Have you ever seen the Silver Lake Sea Serpent? Two years later, after a fire in the Walker House Hotel on Silver Lake, a burnt-out pile of coiled wire and green canvas was found. While A.B. Walker, owner of the hotel, confirmed that he had built the serpent to drum up business at the hotel, many still believe that the serpent exists. Wyoming County has a long history related to the Underground Railroad. America’s first anti-slavery political party was organized in Wyoming County at the Warsaw Presbyterian Church in 1839. The county grew to have the second largest number of conductors and station masters in NYS. The events of the Underground Railroad were shrouded in secrecy because the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 made it illegal to harbor or help fugitive slaves. However, town historian records and private family letters have shined a light on this rich history here in Wyoming County. The Augustus Frank House, now known as the Artisan Villa, in downtown Warsaw, was the home of the first Republican congressman elected from Warsaw in 1856. Frank is credited with sponsorship of the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, which ended slavery in the US. The Seth Gates House, currently housing the Warsaw Historical Society, was the home of Seth Gates, a US Representative who in the 1930s took the first direct action in Congress to halt the spread of slavery by petitioning to prevent the entrance of Texas into the Union. More instances of anti-slavery and the Underground Railroad dot the entire Wyoming County countryside. For more information, request our Historic Freedom Trail brochure!
