Historic Treasure
The state park was once native land of the Seneca
Indians. In the mid 1800’s it was the work of William Pryor
Letchworth who purchased 1,000 acres that make up the
now 14,350 acre park and preserved this national treasure
for generations to come by deeding it over to the State of
New York in 1907. Mr. Letchworth valued hard work and
charity. He sought to focus his efforts later in life towards
preservation and felt compelled to repay society for his
financial success. It was the Seneca Indians who honored
Letchworth by calling him Hai-wa-ye-is-tah, “he who does
the right thing.” It was Letchworth who worked relentlessly
to preserve the Native American history of the Genesee
Valley. His work included the creation of the “Council
Grounds,” Mary Jemison memorial and the preservation of
the ancient Seneca Council House and the Gardeau cabin.
Letchworth State Park, voted Best State Park in the USA,
has something for everyone! Hikers can choose among 66
miles of hiking trails. Trails are also available for horseback
riding, biking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
Letchworth State Park offers nature, history and performing
arts programs, guided walks and tours, a summer lecture
series, whitewater rafting, kayaking, hot air ballooning and
a pool for swimming. Winter activities include snow tubing,
cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
Glen Iris Inn
The Glen Iris Inn has been welcoming guests since 1914 and
is the former country estate of William Pryor Letchworth.
The Inn, located adjacent to the Middle Falls, is one of
the premier dining experiences in New York. Guests can
enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner in addition to taking in
the breathtaking views of the Middle Falls which is just
steps away from the Inn. Accommodations include quaint
guest rooms and suites. Any stay or visit to the Glen Iris
Inn is complemented with an on-site gift shop that includes
personal gifts and fine collectables.
William Pryor Letchworth Museum
The museum, which opened in 1913, includes Native
American and pioneer artifacts, historic photographs,
exhibits on Mr. Letchworth’s philanthropic efforts and life
in the park and a small movie theatre that showcases park
history. A major highlight within the museum includes the
personal library of Mr. Letchworth that captures many of his
interests and social concerns.
Mt. Morris Dam and Visitor Center
Completed in 1952, the dam serves to protect the vast
farmlands and residential areas of the Genesee River Valley
and the Rochester Metropolitan Area. The
dam includes many scenic overlooks

Fishing more your speed? Wyoming County is home to
some of the best recreational fishing you will find in
Western New York. Try your hand at spring trout fishing
in the many rivers and streams that dot the county.
Prefer ice fishing? Silver Lake is world-renowned for its
ice fishing, and even hosts the East Coast Ice Fishing
Tournament every February.
Go Wyoming! is all about action and activity,
of which we have plenty. There is always
something to see and do in Wyoming County.
Winter, spring, summer and fall produce a
variety of adventure that makes the county a
very sought after outdoor destination.
Winding its way through Letchworth State
Park, the Genesee River is best known for
rafting and waterfalls. In the spring and fall
thousands of adventure seekers flock to
Wyoming County to experience the power of
the Genesee by taking to the river in guided
rafting tours with Adventure Calls Outfitters. A trip down
the river through “The Grand Canyon of the East” provides
memories that will last a lifetime and is the perfect trip
for first-time rafters, youth groups, and families with
children. After meeting at the South Poolhouse and
changing into river apparel, you’ll meet your trip leader.
You’ll be issued a paddle and PFD, be given a safety talk,
and then walk about 10 minutes to the river’s edge. Five
and one-half miles of spectacular scenery and fun rapids
await you and your fellow paddlers. On warm days, you
can cool off body surfing at “New Wave Rapids” or get
soaking wet at “The Leap of Faith.” With a little luck,
you may even see some of the animals that inhabit the
park. The park is home to beavers, deer, eagles, hawks,
raccoons, and river otters, just to name a few. The river
is also host to three dramatic waterfalls, one of which,
Middle Falls, stands at approximately 110’ tall. While in
Letchworth, take some time to explore the park on the
miles of hiking tails, located on both sides of the gorge.

Wyoming County holds
the distinction of the largest
dairy producing county in New York and is
recognized as a leader in the national agricultural
community. In Wyoming County, Agri-Tourism is
year-round and is widespread. It offers a host
of opportunities for those interested in a unique
experience. Tourists can ride horses, visit an
alpaca farm, tour an exotic animal adventure,
sample maple products, explore farmers’ markets
or engage in farm activities such as feeding the
animals or planting and harvesting crops. Many
farms are open to the public and allow visitors the
opportunity to pick Wyoming County’s naturally grown
fresh fruits and vegetables.
Wyoming County is also home to cutting edge agricultural
technology and farming practices. Not only a leader in
agriculture, the county is also the leader in the development
and use of green energy practices such as wind power and
manure digesters that produce sustainable clean energy.
Wyoming County not only was the first county in the
Northeast to build a wind farm, the county also possesses
the largest population of wind turbines in New York. These
mammoth structures stand over 200’ tall and can be seen
from points miles away. All in all, the wind farms produce
enough green energy to power over 75,000 households.

Unique landmarks are commonplace within
Wyoming County. The area’s historic towns and
villages are a treasure trove of sights for those
seeking historical information about the county.
One such place is Attica Correctional Facility,
one of the oldest operating correctional facilities
in New York. Constructed in the 1930’s, Attica
Correctional Facility was home to one of the
most infamous prison uprisings of the 1970’s. The
maximum security prison gained national media
attention for the riot in 1971. Because of this event,
many pop references include the Attica riots. Wellknown celebrities such as John Travolta, Samuel
L. Jackson and John Lennon made note of Attica in their
professional works.

Castile, NY is home to a “Spirit of the American
Doughboy” statue, one of dozens cast in the 1920s to pay
homage to American World War I veterans. The Castile
statue, cast by sculptor Ernest M. Visquey and dedicated
in 1926, is one of three left in the State of New York and
one of about only 130 left in the United States. Recently
renovated, the statue looks over downtown Castile and
serves as a memorial to the soldiers and sailors who
served in the conflict of WWI. Visitors are encouraged to
visit the statue and remember the rich history of our area.

Heaven Sent Bed & Breakfast in Portageville recently
became a part of New York State’s Haunted History
Trail. A former rectory, the B&B adjoins a former
Catholic church, which has been turned into a banquet

a collection of attractions and buildings throughout the
state which are reported to be inhabited by ghosts. The
ghosts at Heaven Sent are friendly though! The Vasiles

You can experience the ghostly fun for yourself with

Wyoming County has a long history related to the
Underground Railroad. America’s first anti-slavery
political party was organized in Wyoming County at the
Warsaw Presbyterian Church in 1839. The county grew
to have the second largest number of conductors and
station masters in NYS. The events of the Underground
Railroad were shrouded in secrecy because the Fugitive
Slave Act of 1850 made it illegal to harbor or help fugitive
slaves. However, town historian records and private
family letters have shined a light on this rich history here
in Wyoming County. The Augustus Frank House, now
known as the Artisan Villa, in downtown Warsaw, was
the home of the first Republican congressman elected
from Warsaw in 1856. Frank is credited with sponsorship
of the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, which
ended slavery in the US. The Seth Gates House, currently
housing the Warsaw Historical Society, was the home of
Seth Gates, a US Representative who in the 1930s took
the first direct action in Congress to halt the spread of
slavery by petitioning to prevent the entrance of Texas
into the Union. More instances of anti-slavery and the
Underground Railroad dot the entire Wyoming County
countryside. For more information, request our Historic
Freedom Trail brochure!

Genesee County
Livingston County
Just 30 minutes EAST
Just 45 minutes NORTH
Conveniently located halfway between
Niagara Falls/Buffalo and Rochester,
Genesee County has three major exits off
the NYS Thruway (I-90): Exits 47, 48, and
48A. We’re located less than an hour from
the Canadian border and Niagara Falls
to the west, and the Finger Lakes Region
to the east. With over 1,000 hotel rooms,
great dining selections, and interesting
things to see and do, Genesee County
offers something for everyone!
Four Seasons of splendor begin with a
visit to Letchworth State Park, the “Grand
Canyon of the East.” Enjoy all types of
family-friendly outdoor activities, including a stop at the Mt. Morris Dam and Visitor
Center (the largest Dam of its kind East of
the Mississippi River). Browse Americana
Main Streets for antiquing pleasure,
venture to historic sites, stop for a local
dining experience and head to our wineries
for award-winning wines.
Nestled on the southern banks of Lake
Ontario between Niagara Falls & Rochester,
NY is historic Orleans County. Discover
the charm as you cruise along our country
byways and scenic waterways while experiencing our rich history, rural culture
and exhilarating outdoor fun. Don’t forget
to stop in at our bountiful farm markets,
charming gift shops and unique museums
along the Erie Canal, Historic Ridge Road
and the Seaway Trail.
