Historic Treasure
The state park was once native land of the Seneca
Indians. In the mid 1800’s it was the work of William
Pryor Letchworth who purchased 1,000 acres that make
up the now 14,350 acre park and preserved this national
treasure for generations to come by deeding it over to the
State of New York in 1907. Mr. Letchworth valued hard
work and charity. He sought to focus his efforts later in life
towards preservation and felt compelled to repay society
for his financial success. It was the Seneca Indians who
honored Letchworth by calling him Hai-wa-ye-is-tah, “he
who does the right thing.” It was Letchworth who worked
relentlessly to preserve the Native American history of
the Genesee Valley. His work included the creation of
the “Council Grounds,” Mary Jemison memorial and the
preservation of the ancient Seneca Council House and
the Gardeau cabin.

as wind power and manure digesters that produce
sustainable clean energy. Wyoming County not only was
the first county in the Northeast to build a wind farm, the
county also possesses the largest population of wind
turbines in New York. Wyoming County is home to three
wind farms located in Bliss, Sheldon and Wethersfield.
These mammoth structures stand over 200’ tall and can

go for
the history!
Wyoming County is rich with cultural experiences, from the
pride of our involvement with the Underground Railroad, to
the rich Seneca Indian history, to William Pryor Letchworth’s
beneficial impact on the area. Visit our galleries and museums
and be a part of the living history of Wyoming County.
Those who seek entertainment and the opportunity to
discover historical treasures will not be disappointed. Notable
interpretive programs include speaker and lecture series and
musical performances in Letchworth State Park, Epworth Hall
at Silver Lake and the William B. Hoyt II Visitor Center at Mt.
Morris Dam.
Wyoming County has a rich Seneca Indian history, most
notably the story of the “White Woman of the Genesee”
Mary Jemison. At the age of 15, during the French and Indian
War, Mary and her family were captured by a raiding party
of French soldiers and Shawnee warriors. While the rest
of her family was killed, Mary was sold to a Seneca Indian
tribe. The Seneca’s adopted the young white girl, gave her
a Native American name and Mary grew up in their culture.
She eventually married and moved, with her family, to
Seneca Indian land beside the Genesee River in present-day
Letchworth State Park. Visitors to the park can visit Mary to
this day, as a statue of the woman marks her gravesite on the
grounds of the park.
Have you ever seen the Silver Lake Sea Serpent? A local
legend around Silver Lake, the story of the Sea Serpent
dates back to the summer of 1885, when boaters reported
seeing a greenish creature about 20 feet long swimming
in the lake. Reports of the “serpent” sparked a fire-storm
and soon people from all over the world were flocking to
Silver Lake to try and catch a glimpse. But, was this all one
big hoax? Two years later, after a fire in the Walker House
Hotel on Silver Lake, a burnt-out pile of coiled wire and
green-ish canvas was found. While A.B. Walker, owner of
the hotel, confirmed that he had built the serpent to drum
up business at the hotel, many still believe that the serpent
exists. Plan your trip to Silver Lake today and have a look
for yourself!
Unique landmarks are commonplace within Wyoming
County. The area’s historic towns and villages are a
treasure trove of sights for those seeking historical
information about the county. One such place is Attica
State Prison, one of the oldest operating correctional
facilities in New York. Constructed in the 1930’s, Attica State
Prison was home to one of the most infamous uprisings of
the 1970’s. The maximum security prison gained national
media attention for the riot in 1971. Because of this event,
many pop references include the Attica riots. Well-known
celebrities such as John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson and
John Lennon made note of Attica in their professional
works.

the outdoors!

Go Wyoming! is all about action and activity, of which we
have plenty. There is always something to see and do in
Wyoming County. Winter, spring, summer and fall produce
a variety of adventure that makes the county a very sought
after outdoor destination.
Winding its way though Letchworth State Park, the
Genesee River is best known for rafting and waterfalls.
In the spring and fall thousands of adventure seekers
flock to Wyoming County to experience the power of the
Genesee by taking to the river in guided rafting tours with
Adventure Calls Outfitters. The river is also host to three
dramatic waterfalls, one of which, Middle Falls, stands at
approximately 110’ tall. While in Letchworth, take some
time to explore the park on the miles of hiking tails, located
on both sides of the gorge.
For the winter enthusiast, Wyoming County boasts over
250 miles of snowmobiling trails! Ride the trails all day,
enjoy the beautiful Wyoming County countryside, and stop
into one of our many restaurants that are located right on
the trails. Contact the Chamber office to purchase a trails
map and get out and snowmobile!
