Wittenborg Team Last update: Apeldoorn, February 2016 5 Version February 2016 For Daily Information see Wittenborg Online http://www.wittenborg-0nline.com Student Information Guide Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences Welcome in Apeldoorn Apeldoorn's History The history of Apeldoorn goes back to the year 792, when the “villa ut marca Appoldro” was mentioned in a deed of gift. At the time the “city” only consisted of few houses. It was not until the end of the 16th century, when the paper industry began to flourish, that Apeldoorn flourished along. In 1684 Willem III van Oranje (the ancestor of the Dutch Royal family) bought house Het Loo and build palace Het Loo next to it. Several members of the Royal family have lived there over the centuries, which gave the city the charm and charisma it still has today. During the 20 century Apeldoorn has grown into one of the larger cities in the Netherlands, measuring 340 km2. th Compared to other towns and cities, Apeldoorn is surprisingly different. The beautiful gardens, many city parks, impressive detached dwellings and relatively few high-rise buildings, give it an atmosphere of tranquillity and space. The fairly large rural area around the centre that is home to villages such as Hoenderloo, Beekbergen/Lieren, Loenen, Oosterhuizen, Klarenbeek, Wenum-Wiesel, Beemte Broekland, Uddel, Hoog Soeren, Radio Kootwijk and Ugchelen, strongly enhances the atmosphere. Apeldoorn is located in the centre of Netherlands, in the province of Gelderland. It’s situated along National Park the Veluwe, with western parts of the city spread over forest covered hills dotted with small lakes, and eastern parts stretching in a wooded valley. 6 Version February 2016 For Daily Information see Wittenborg Online http://www.wittenborg-0nline.com Student Information Guide Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences Apeldoorn’s Economy With a population that exceeds 155,000, and 90,000 jobs, the city fulfils a regional function in the Stedendriehoek (triangle of cities) Apeldoorn – Deventer – Zutphen. It’s a key area for employment in the eastern side of the Netherlands. Nationally well-known companies and employers in Apeldoorn include the Tax and Customs Administration, Centraal Beheer Achmea, Wegener Uitgeverij, Kadaster and HITT traffic control. Apeldoorn is also home to many athletes and more than a hundred sports clubs. Omnisport Apeldoorn is the only indoor accommodation in the Netherlands that can host large international athletics and track cycling events. It is a major player in the leisure industry of the Netherlands. However, the largest share of income in Apeldoorn is through its many tourist attractions. With sights such as the Apenheul, Koningin Julianatoren, Radio Kootwijk, National Museum Paleis Het Loo, and National Park the (Hoge) Veluwe (making it a favourite spot for holidaymakers and day-trippers), the flow of tourists is constant all year around. (For more details about sights in Apeldoorn, check Chapter 2.) Transportation in Apeldoorn Apeldoorn is situated more or less in the middle of the Netherlands. It is easy to get to by car as well as public transport. Train The city is situated along the main line between the eastern and western parts of the Netherlands; getting you to places like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Amersfoort, Deventer and Enschede within 1,5 hours. There is a direct connection with Schiphol Airport as well. To reach the northern or southern part of the country you have to change trains in either Deventer, Amersfoort or Utrecht. For train timetables (also in English) see: www.ns.nl or www.9292.nl for all public transport. Bus Apeldoorn is the 'capital' of the Veluwe, one of the most important tourist areas in the Netherlands with a lot of very interesting sites to visit. Therefore, most villages and cities 7 Version February 2016 For Daily Information see Wittenborg Online http://www.wittenborg-0nline.com Student Information Guide Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences on and alongside the Veluwe are accessible by public busses. They all depart from the bus station (next to the train station). For timetables (also in English) see www.9292.nl. Costs of living Due to the high population density, property in the Netherlands is expensive. Most properties are small, particularly in the inner cities. Renting a house or room in the city outskirts is considerably cheaper than in the city centre. Luckily, daily expenses for groceries are identified to be low. A student can expect to spend a total of €700 / €750 a month (excluding tuition fee and personal expenses). Some examples of other expenses: - Annual discount card for trains €50,- This card will give you 40% off on each train ride you take between 09:00 and 16:00 and between 18:30 and 06:30 on weekdays and all weekend. This means a one way ticket from Apeldoorn to Amsterdam will cost you €8,90 (without discount €14,80). And a return ticket Amsterdam – Apeldoorn will cost you €17,80 (without discount €29,60). (More information in Chapter 3.) - A meal at an average bistro or restaurant costs between €10 - €30. - A packet of cigarettes costs about €6,00. - Student health insurance costs you €500 per year. Kings Day 27 of April 2016 th Kings Day celebrates the birthday of the Dutch King of the Netherlands and is supposed to be a day of national unity and “togetherness” (Dutch: saamhorigheid). The tradition started on the 31 of August 1885, on the birthday of Princess Wilhelmina, later Queen Wilhelmina. Since 1949, after the accession of Queen Juliana, Queen's Day is Queen Juliana's birthday on April 30 . st th On - Kings Day, you will see: a fair on the Market Square; brass bands playing; street musicians; other live music on stages; - fireworks in the evening; jumble sale in the streets; - loads of red, white, blue (national flag) and orange (national colour) everywhere! 8 Version February 2016 For Daily Information see Wittenborg Online http://www.wittenborg-0nline.com Student Information Guide Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences But most of all, you will find thousands and thousands of people in the town centre celebrating the King’s birthday. Walking around, sitting on side walk cafes, drinking beer or an ‘orange bitter’ and having fun. Kings Night The night before Kings Day, Kings Night is celebrated. Started as a warm up for Kings Day, it has now become a celebration on its own. Many (inter)national artists look forward to the event that starts earlier almost every year. Around 14:00 hours the first stage opens up and you can dance the night away right into Kings Day! On the station square the annual Station Dance will start at 19.00 o’clock. King Town Jazz & Soul Festival King Town Jazz & Soul is the newest of festivals in the Apeldoorn area. It is a yearly music festival in Apeldoorn. Every year during the last weekend of May a variety of bands plays live music on several stages in the city center. Jazz in the Woods is free, and therefore nearly 60.000 people attend this event. In the past, the bands which have played at King Town Jazz & Soul were Jazz bands, but nowadays you can also hear pop, blues, hip-hop, reggae, big band and other music styles. (Music) Festivals in the Netherlands Around Whitsunday / Pentecost (Pinksteren in Dutch) the festival season opens up with Pinkpop. Throughout the summer you can join Lowlands (3 days), Dancevalley, Mysteryland, Festival Mundial, Indian Summer Festival, Rock Werter (Belgium) and many more, spread all over the country. A special festival is the one on May 4 and 5 . After World War II, May 4 became Remembrance Day, with a national two-minute silence at 20:00 hours. On May 5 the Dutch celebrate their freedom. Due to its important role during the liberation of the Netherlands, the city of Wageningen is well-known for its major Freedom Festival. But also other cities like Zwolle organise big festivals around these days. th th th th (Music) Festivals in Apeldoorn Every year several outdoor festivals take place on the market square in the city centre. Dancetour and Summerloverz are the two biggest and well-known festivals. Summerloverz usually takes place in July. In 2014 this dance event will be held on the 6 of July and Dancetour takes place on the 10 of August from 13.00 to 22.00 o’clock. Both events are free and it’s a great place to meet new people. th th 9 Version February 2016 For Daily Information see Wittenborg Online http://www.wittenborg-0nline.com Student Information Guide Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences Visit our open market Although most cities in the Netherlands have their own market(s), many people think that Apeldoorn is THE market town in the country. There are several markets on every weekday on different places. The main market is on Saturday on the market square and has a couple of hundred market vendors. The Saturday market has a lot of food stands with vegetables, fruit, cheese, eggs, fish and meat. Flower- and plant booths are common to. Monday market, also on the market square, counts more fabric booths. The others are much smaller and located in the suburbs. Whilst visiting the market (especially on Saturdays) it’s a tradition to eat fish from one of the stands. Dutch specialty is ‘haring’, which is fresh raw fish. With some onions it is a real treat and very Old Dutch tradition! Also nice are 'lekkerbekje' or 'kibbeling' (fried cod). Create your own bike tour In the Netherlands there are twice as many bicycles as there are people! Cycling tracks are routed and well-kept across the entire country. Quite recently the majority of the bicycle intersections are systematically numbered into a complete network. This network allows you to create your own route by simply following the numbers. You can either get a map at the Tourist Information (VVV) or check one of the maps on the site of the road or the internet. Simply write down the numbers of the route you want to cycle and off you go! “Knooppunten” as the network of intersections is called, covers part of the Veluwe as well, which is a very nice area to bike around: www.fietsroutenetwerkveluwe.nl. Besides this network, there are also signposted bike-tours (for instance “Oranjeroute” in and around Apeldoorn). For an overview of cycling possibilities, please visit the Tourist Information (VVV) or an ANWB shop. They sell the network maps as well as pre-routed cycling tracks. On the internet you can find an interactive map of the cycling network: http://www.fietsersbond.net/fietsrouteplanner/fietsroutes-gelderland/knooppunten/ 10 Version February 2016 For Daily Information see Wittenborg Online http://www.wittenborg-0nline.com Student Information Guide Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences Sights and attractions in Apeldoorn Paleis Het Loo: a must see Paleis Het Loo was built in 1686 by William III and used for almost 300 years as a (summer) palace by members of our Royal family until 1975. Special Events: - "Christmas at Paleis Het Loo"; - A Royal view over the gardens: the roof of the palace is open for public on Eastern, Queen’s day, White Sunday and Monday and on Wednesday’s of June, July and August; - Monthly concert: every last Saturday of the month in the Ballroom of the palace (for more information check their website: www.paleisconcerten.nl). Latest opening hours and admission fees can be found on the website (Dutch, English, French and German): www.paleishetloo.nl. 11 Version February 2016 For Daily Information see Wittenborg Online http://www.wittenborg-0nline.com Student Information Guide Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences Theatre Orpheus: All kinds of performances The renewed Orpheus theatre is one of the biggest and most modern theatres in the Netherlands, allowing for all kinds of performances; dramatic art, cabaret, ballet, concerts, etc. Check out their website for the latest programme: www.orpheus.nl. Tip: visit the box office shortly before the show starts, you might just get the last tickets at a discount, or even better, for free! Wenum - Oranjemolen ('t Haasje) The only traditional wind mill of Apeldoorn is situated in the village of Wenum. The mill was originally build in 1840 as a Poldermolen (pumping water from lower areas to higher ground), but was bought by Mr Vorderman in 1913 to grind wheat/grain in order to produce flour. The mill is not open for visitors, but you can get up close thanks to the road running next to it: Marleweg 64 in Wenum. Apenheul Apenheul is a zoo specialised in monkeys and apes from Asia, Africa and South-America. The difference with other zoos in the space and freedom the animals have in the park. Gorilla’s and orang-utans are obviously unable to get to, but many smaller species just mingle with the visitors. No bars, no wire netting, no restrictions. For more information visit the website: www.apenheul.nl. 12 Version February 2016 For Daily Information see Wittenborg Online http://www.wittenborg-0nline.com Student Information Guide Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences Life in the Netherlands – important to know Bank Account and Banks New international students can open a Dutch bank account easily, which is also highly recommended. First you need to go to IND in Zwolle to get your residence permit. When you have your Residence permit you can go to City Hall for your BSN number. With your BSN number you can open a bank account. You can ask for assistance at the Front Desk. Student affairs and traveling Apeldoorn is centred around the inner city, extremely compact and therefore easy to get around, especially by bike since there are hardly any hills to climb. The cycling distances between student housing and school are generally no more than 20 minutes. The Netherlands railway system is extremely extensive, frequent and modern. The trains are well organised and there are regular services, especially in the west of Holland where trains run between cities at an interval of 15 minutes. The trains are all non-smoking compartments and first and second class carriages. First class is more spacious, luxurious and often quieter, however more expensive. Foreign students are able to purchase a reduction pass that entitles them to a 40% discount in Holland during the off-peak hours. This card can be used between 09:00 – 16:00 and between 18:30 - 06.30 during the week and all day in the weekend. You can travel with 4 persons in total with one discount card. You can get information regarding an off-peak travel card from the larger Railway stations, or at www.ns.nl. In order to use the bus, tram and metro in Holland a traveller requires an "OV-chipkaart" (PTSmart Card) 13 Version February 2016 For Daily Information see Wittenborg Online http://www.wittenborg-0nline.com Student Information Guide Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences OV-Chipkaart The OV-chipkaart (PT Smart Card) is the newest way to pay for public transport. The OVchipkaart is the size of a credit card and has a built-in chip. You can reload this as often as you like, with a balance in euros or with a season ticket. Prior to each trip you check in by swiping your card over a scanner; the card will register the location and reserve a certain amount of money for the trip. At the end of your journey you need to check out; the card registers the location again and the cost of your trip will be reduced form the card. Please make sure you check out! If you forget, the system cannot calculate the actual costs of your journey and reduces a standard amount of money. This often is much more than the actual costs of the trip! The OV-Chipkaart costs 7,50 EUR and is available at www.ov-chipkaart.nl. Traveling abroad Students studying in the Netherlands holding a valid residence permit for the Netherlands are free to travel to all the Schengen countries: - Austria - Greece - Norway - Malta - Belgium - Iceland - Lithuania, Latvia - Hungary - Slovenia, Slovakia - Estonia - Netherlands - Germany - Spain - Luxembourg - Denmark - Czech Republic - Sweden, Switzerland - Portugal, Poland - Italy - France, Finland Note: The United Kingdom is not a part of the Schengen area! Students will require a visa for the UK, which – if applied for in the first 6 months residence in the Netherlands – will be referred back to a student’s home country. Before students start to travel within the Schengen region of Europe they must already have been issued with their "residence permit" also known as "ID card". If you do not yet possess the temporary residence permit papers, you are not permitted to travel across the country borders. Health and Insurance Matters Wittenborg's students who are here on a Student Visa are all fully insured through AON, which includes the Health Insurance, Accident Insurance, Liability Insurance, Legal Assistance Insurance, Extra Costs Insurance, and Households Contents Insurance/Baggage. Info: https://www.aonstudentinsurance.com, we have the ICS Complete package. Health Insurance will cover the costs of medical treatment, including physician's fees, hospitalization and surgery, medicines prescribed by the physician, necessary ambulance or taxi, psychiatric day or night care, physiotherapy, dental costs (partly) and more. More information about the insurance policy will be fully described in the Insurance Certificate, which is handed out to each student after arrival. 14 Version February 2016 For Daily Information see Wittenborg Online http://www.wittenborg-0nline.com Student Information Guide Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences Medical care in the Netherlands is of high quality and therefore expensive. You need to have sufficient health insurance and liability insurance. Both are included in the package fee (for international students) as are the administrative fees. Students also need liability insurance, which is required by law in the Netherlands. This is included in the insurance package offered by the Administration Office. Students who are no longer obliged to take the Wittenborg package might like to find their own insurance. This is of course always possible, although students will then need to administer all arrangements themselves. Visits to the doctor can be made by appointment. The front desk can help you make the appointment. The doctor's bills should be brought to the Front Desk during its opening hours, where appropriate forms will be provided in order to get the payment refunded from the insurance company. You can also submit your claim online. For more information, please visit https://www.students-insurance.eu/ Please note: Students who start working a (part time) job are obliged to arrange a Dutch public health insurance, which differs from the student health insurance Wittenborg offers and is quite expensive. If the public health insurance is not arranged properly, students take the risk of getting fined. An allowance can be requested at the tax office. For more information please contact the Front Desk during its opening hours or check the following information site: http://www.nuffic.nl/international-students/preparation-stay/preparingyourhttp://www.nuffic.nl/international-students/preparation-stay/preparing-yourstay/insurance/health-insurancestay/insurance/health-insurance Working in the Netherlands For international students to work in the Netherlands, a working permit is needed. The following academic activities also count as working: lecturing, doing a student internship or work placement, conducting research, and pursuing a doctorate or PhD from a paid position (as AIO, for example). Students are not permitted to work without a specially issued permit in the Netherlands during their stay (unless they are an EU citizen). These days the work permit is made easier by the fact that students are issued a `BSN Number` (Citizen Service Number), just as Dutch citizens. That allows them to find work for 10 hours a week during their months of study or 36 to 40 hours a week during their holidays. Centre for Work and Income (CWI) - www.cwinet.nl/nl Immigration Office in the Netherlands - www.ind.nl Nuffic - www.nuffic.nl/immigration EU students may be able - when working 56 hours a month - to get study funding from DUO (Operational Education Services). www.duo.nl 15 Version February 2016 For Daily Information see Wittenborg Online http://www.wittenborg-0nline.com Student Information Guide Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences A few handy tips Shops in Apeldoorn city centre are open on Monday from 13:00 – 18:00, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 09:00 – 18:00 and on Thursday from 09:00 – 21:00 hours.
