The office of Parent Programs is focused
on helping you and your student with this
transition into the collegiate experience.
This handbook will answer many of
your questions regarding college
adjustments, campus safety, and the
student services we offer. Please
keep it on hand during your student’s
collegiate experience. It will serve as a
valuable and convenient reference.
There is also an association specifically
designed just for you — the UCO Parents’
Association, launched in 2006! It was
established thanks to the feedback of UCO
parents and family members just like you.

Central offers an innovative learning community
where teaching comes first and students develop
personal relationships with faculty and staff, like
2008 U.S. Professor of the Year, Dr. Wei Chen,
who are committed to transforming lives. With 112
undergraduate majors and 54 graduate programs,
UCO is a smart investment for students dedicated
to their future success. Notable academic
programs include the state’s only master’s
degrees in Jazz Studies and Athletic Training
and bachelor’s degrees in dance education,
humanities, actuarial science and creative writing.
Additionally, UCO is home to premiere programs
in Forensic Science, Education, Music Theatre,
Mass Communication, and the new Academy
of Contemporary Music, which opened in
Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district in Fall 2009.
Central’s appealing 210-acre campus is on track
to become a certified botanical garden, offering

Central keeps the community entertained with live
music every week at the popular UCO Jazz Lab and
concerts and theatrical performances at Mitchell
Hall Theater from students and the Broadway

In 2008, The Parents’ Association set
fundraising for student scholarships as one
of the top priorities. What started as an idea
has blossomed into an amazing opportunity
to help students for generations to come.
An endowed scholarship account has been
established that will provide scholarship
opportunities to Central students every
year. Each spring semester, students
can apply for these scholarships and the
recipients are announced at the annual
Parents’ Association Spring Fling.
The UCO Parents’ Association hosts
multiple events throughout the year
specifically geared for Central parents
and families. From Parent Orientation and
Parent Weekend to athletic events and
more, there is so much to gain from being
a member of the Parents’ Association.

our freshman advisors can help them build
schedules for the first two semesters to
point students in the right direction toward
graduation. Once students have completed
24 semester hours, they will be assigned to
an academic advisor in their program area.

Office of First-Year
Experience Programs
The Office of First-Year Experience Programs (FYE) is a resource center for your
student and a place that they feel comfortable coming and asking for help.
The FYE Office is also responsible for multiple programmatic efforts intended
to help your student start on the right foot, including Enrollment Central,
UCO House Calls and our freshman success course, Success Central.
The Student Financial Services office, located in NUC 141, is available to help
students meet their educational expenses. As most families qualify for some
financial aid, students should apply even if they don’t think they are eligible. If
students don’t qualify for federal income grants, they may be eligible for workstudy
programs or scholarships. The Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) is
available to any family regardless of income. Types of aid include grants (financial
aid that you do not have to pay back), Federal Workstudy (students earn money
while working on- or off-campus) and loans (borrowed money that must be repaid
with interest). The Student Financial Services Office offers services that include
application assistance, online review of aid status, and debt management.
UNIV 1012, Success Central, is a unique
course designed to give first-year students
a head start with their college experience.
The course introduces students to
the University of Central Oklahoma’s
facilities, services, activities, traditions, and
academic expectations. It will also help
students establish a sense of community
with other students, faculty, and staff.
UNIV 1012: Success Central satisfies
two credit hours of students’ required
“Elective Life Skills” in the University
Core. Students can earn college credit,
make progress toward their degree,
and develop skills that will improve their
performance in the rest of their coursework.
Success Central students also enjoy the
opportunity to apply for scholarships
available only to Success Central alumni.

Housing & Dining Services
By choosing to live on campus, students have numerous opportunities to become
involved in campus life, typically have higher GPA’s than those who live off-campus,
and make life-long friendships. UCO Housing and Dining Services works to provide a
safe and secure home on campus, encourages community, promotes diversity, provides
leadership opportunities, enhances character, and connects students and faculty.
UCO Housing and Dining Services offers
unique living environments designed
to meet the needs of Central’s diverse
student body. All halls have wireless
internet, local phone service (residents
provide their own phone), and all utilities
are paid. There are two traditional singlesex residence halls; West (women) and
Murdaugh (men) and three co-ed living
options; University Suites, Central Plaza,
and University Commons (apartment style).
Dining on campus provides students

with a great community environment
and healthy food options. Our meal
plans are designed to provide quality
food that meet our students’ demanding
schedules and lifestyles. Students in all
housing options, except the Commons,
are required to purchase a meal plan.

Services
Located in the Wellness Center, the
Mercy Clinic at UCO is a health facility
where students, faculty and staff
can access medical care when they
need it. Services include diagnostic
x-rays, lab and access to Mercy’s
comprehensive electronic health record.
UCO Health Services gives the ability
and know-how to become a healthy
individual. Health Services encourages
healthy lifestyles by providing the
Health Center, Healthy Campus
initiative, Group Fitness, Personal
Training and Peer Education.

Eco-Friendly Alternatives
To order your parking decal, you
must have your UCO ID number, your
UCONNECT password (same as UCO
PIN), and the license plate numbers
for all vehicles you register. Decals
are ordered online as follows:
Central’s Connect by Hertz program
currently uses four 2010 model year
vehicles including a Toyota Prius and
Camry, a Mazda 3 and a Ford Escape,
which are all parked in two different
locations on campus. Each vehicle can
be rented for between $6.80 and $8 an
hour, depending on the membership level
chosen, while daily fees vary in price.
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) at the University of
Central Oklahoma strives to enhance learning, improve service and
communication, and increase student, faculty, staff, and community
access to useful information through the application of technology.

To participate in the program, users must

swiping it over the car’s reader.
The new car-share program isn’t
Central’s first alternative transportation
initiative. The university’s successful
GreenRide carpooling program, which
recently merged with Oklahoma City’s
GetAroundOK, provides Central students,
staff and faculty a way to connect with
others in the Oklahoma City metro area
for carpool and rideshare options.
Another successful “green” initiative
at Central is the Bum-A-Bike program,
which allows the Central community to
“bum” a bike free of charge from the
UCO Department of Public Safety.
The UCO Office of Information Technology serves the
campus community in a variety of ways:

computer labs are managed and
maintained by Support and Operations. These labs can be found on campus in the
Max Chambers Library, room 107 and the
Nigh University Center Cyber Café. Each
college also operates computer labs within
the various classroom buildings on campus.

wireless internet access is available in all of
our classroom and administrative buildings
on campus. For more information about

Virus Protection
The Help Desk
UCO has a license with Symantec, which
provides virus protection software for
the entire campus. All UCO computers
are configured to automatically
receive the anti-virus product and any
updates as they become available.
The IT Help Desk is on call to respond
to the support needs of the campus
community. The Help Desk can be reached
by a variety of methods, including
On-line Support Requests. Students
can visit the ‘Current Students’ tab
at www.uco.edu and click on the ‘IT
Help Desk’ Link to submit an on-line
request for technical assistance.
Additionally, the University has made
arrangements for students, faculty, and
staff to download and install this anti-virus
software on their personal computers. The
software can be downloaded through the
main UCONNECT web page after logging
in with your user name and password.

Campus Safety & Security
Central Alert
The mission of the Office for Disability
Support Services is to provide and coordinate
mandated support services, auxiliary aids, and
accommodations for students with disabilities,
which allow them to gain equal access to
an education. This office also serves as a
resource to the University community and
promotes awareness so that these students
can participate in all facets of University life.

Central Alert is UCO’s emergency
notification system. It allows authorized
UCO officials to send news and instructions
simultaneously to individuals through

Personal Information Channel on the
Home Tab in the University’s portal,
UCONNECT (http://uconnect.uco.edu).

FIRST PUBLIC SCHOOLHOUSE 1889 TERRITORIAL SCHOOL
This first in Edmond is believed to be the first
school built in Oklahoma Territory after the
Land Run of 1889. It has been restored and
is open to visitors the first two Saturdays of

to be pre-booked for special group tours.

my student’s grades,
academic standing,
tuition and fees status?
There are two forms you and your student must sign
in order for you to have access to any of their records.
Contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office and the
Financial Aid Office for the release of information form.
How does my student set
up an email account?
Your student has an email account automatically set up for them through
the UCONNECT portal. If your student is unsure of their UCONNECT
login information, they can visit http://uconnect.uco.edu with their UCO
student ID number. Step-by-step instructions are provided for retrieval of
a UCONNECT username and password.
How can my student
find information about
campus jobs?
The key to finding employment at the university is showing a
willingness to work and being open to all types of jobs. Visit
jobs.uco.edu for a complete listing of on-campus jobs.
Who do I talk to about
billing questions?
Contact the Bursar office at (405) 974-2228 for questions about your
statements. Remember your student can access billing information
and online payment options by logging in to UCONNECT.

How does UCO address
drug and alcohol
use and abuse?
University of Central Oklahoma is a “dry campus.” We do not
allow alcohol on campus for any university related event. Drug
and alcohol abuse is not tolerated at the university, and students
in violation are given appropriate disciplinary sanctions. Several
peer education programs are in place to educate students
on issues related to drug and alcohol use and abuse.

Pointers for Parents
Don’t ask them if they’re
homesick. The power of
association can be a
dangerous thing. For many students,
the idea of being homesick doesn’t
occur until a family member calls
and asks, “Are you homesick?”
RULE 1
The first few weeks of school are packed
with activities and friends, and the
challenge of meeting new people and
adjusting to new situations takes a majority
of a new student’s time and concentration.
Unless they’re reminded of it (by a wellmeaning parent), they’ll probably be able
to escape the loneliness and frustration of
homesickness. Even if they don’t tell you
during those first weeks, they do miss you.
Ask questions but try
not to ask too many.
First year students are
“cool” (or so they think) and have a
tendency to resent interference with
their new-found lifestyle. But most
still desire the security of knowing
someone is interested in them.
RULE 2
Parental curiosity can be obnoxious and
alienating or relief-giving and supporting,
depending on the attitudes of the people
involved. “I-have-a-right-to-know” tinged
questions with ulterior motives should be
avoided. However, honest inquiries and
other “between friends” communication
and discussion will do much to further
the parent-student relationship.
Expect change. Your student
will change, either drastically
within the first few months,
slowly over four years, or at a
rate somewhere in between. It’s natural,

inevitable, and it can be inspiring and
beautiful. Often, though, it’s a pain in the neck.
College, and the experiences associated
with it, can cause changes in social,
vocational, and personal behavior and
choices. An up-to-now wallflower may
become a fraternity sweetheart. A pre-med
student may discover that biology is not
his or her thing after all. Or a high school
radical may become a college egghead.
You can’t stop change. You may not
even understand it. But it is within
your power (and to your and your
student’s advantage) to accept it.
Remember your student will basically
be the same person you sent away
to school, aside from some interest
changes and personality revisions.
Visit your student. Visits by
parents – especially when
accompanied by shopping
sprees and dinners out – are another
part of the college experience students
are reluctant to admit liking but
appreciate greatly. Pretended disdain
of these visits is just another part of
the college student syndrome.
RULE 4

your student and the school. That way,
you may even get to see a clean room.

Trust them. Finding yourself
is a difficult enough process
without feeling the people
whose opinions you respect
most are second-guessing. One of the
most important things a parent can
say is: “I love you and want for you all
the things that make you the happiest;
and I guess you, not I, are the one
who knows best what those things
are.” Believe it, mean it, say it now.
Recognizing nonperformance in your
student is a challenge – especially at
long distance. One of the most important
things a parent can do for a collegeage student is to demonstrate interest.
Being interested is different from being
demanding. It is more “I’d like to know”
than “You owe me this information.”
What can you do as a parent to support
your student during the beginning of the
next semester?
These visits give the student a chance to
introduce some of the important people
from both home and school to each
other. Additionally, it’s a way for you to
become familiar with, and gain more
understanding of, your student’s new
activities, commitments, and friends.
Spur-of-the-moment surprises are usually
not appreciated. Preemption of a planned
weekend studying or other activities
may have disastrous results. It’s usually
