your sons or daughters
will know there is a team,
at UCO and back home,
cheering for their success.”
Beginning with FORGE: Family in the fall,
you have opportunities to learn more
about the UCO campus, its services and
traditions, as well as the community of
Edmond. We offer this guidebook to use
as a reference as you navigate this new
path of your son or daughter’s journey. We
also invite you to become a member of
the Parent and Family Association, which
offers ways to stay in touch with university
news and get information about family
events on campus.
Welcome from
the Vice President
for Student Affairs
Welcome, Family Members,
to the University of Central Oklahoma!
We are so delighted that you and your
student are joining the UCO Broncho

in the life of you and your student, and it
is our great pleasure to provide you with
as beneficial and enjoyable an experience
as possible.

University of Central Oklahoma
Please enjoy your visit to the University

While we have worked hard all year long
to prepare this welcome, we know you —

success. With your continued caring and
conversation, your sons or daughters will
know there is a team, at UCO and back
home, cheering for their success.

through scheduled appointments and
during non-appointment/walk-in hours on
specific days. Counselors advise current

Those seeking internship or full-time
employment opportunities will find

HireBronchos.com especially helpful. It is a
database from which students may search
for internships and jobs. Resumes are
electronically referred upon employers’
requests, and interviews are scheduled
when recruiters come to campus.

students to discover their highest
potential through leadership experiences,
memorable programs and cultivating
lasting relationships. The Campus
Activities staff offers a safe outlet and

and take away festive memories of
their time at Central. There are almost
600 unique leadership and volunteer

Eco-Friendly Alternatives
Central’s Connect by Hertz car-share
program currently uses a Chevy Cruz

participate in the program, users must
apply online at hertzondemand.com.
Approved members will receive a Hertz

Central’s only alternative transportation
initiative. The university’s successful
GreenRide carpooling program, which
recently merged with Oklahoma City’s
GetAroundOK, provides Central students,
staff and faculty a way to connect with
others in the Oklahoma City metro area
for carpool and rideshare options. Another
successful “green” initiative at Central is
the Bum-A-Bike program, which allows the
Central community to borrow a bike, free

The OIT serves the campus community in
a variety of ways: campus computer labs
(including two open-use extended-hour
student computer labs); virus protection
software for the entire campus; campuswide wireless Internet access; and the
Help Desk, on-call resource responding
to the technical support needs of the UCO
community. Many of these services can be
found on by visiting the “Current Students”
tab at uco.edu and clicking on the “IT Help
Desk” link to submit an online request
for technical assistance. Many questions
directed to IT can be answered from within
a student’s UCONNECT page on the
“Virtual Help Desk” tab.
The IT Help Desk is located in the
Chambers Library in the northwest corner
of the first floor. Walk-up service hours
are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through
Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, and

to (405) 974-225 are answered from
7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through
Thursday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday
and Saturday. Additional support is also
available in the Central Tech Store, located

Campus Safety
& Security
Central Alert
Central Alert is UCO’s emergency
notification system. It allows authorized
UCO officials to send news and
instructions simultaneously to individuals
through landline phones, cellular phones,
text messaging and email, as well as popup messages to campus computers.
We encourage students to update their
contact information through either the
Central Alert Channel or the Personal
Information Channel on the “Home” tab in
UCONNECT (uconnect.uco.edu).
To receive text alerts and or closing/
weather alerts through the Central Alert
system, students must opt-in by providing
a text-enabled, text message phone
number through UCONNECT. They can
also add their parents’ numbers to allow
their parents to receive the alerts. Look
for the “My Central Alert” option within

Q

if he/she doesn’t like his/her roommate?
A
If your student is having issues with a roommate, meal plan or living arrangements
they need to contact their RA (residence assistant) or the housing office at
(405) 974-2746.
Q
How can my student get involved on campus?
A
UCO offers more than 200 organizations to help students get involved. Visit

Q
Will my student be assigned an academic advisor?
A
All students are initially seen by Central’s freshman advisement staff. Upon
reaching sophomore status, students will begin visiting with a program advisor in
their chosen major. In some major fields students will also be assigned a faculty
advisor by their college or department. Students who are unsure who their
advisor is should visit the Center for Undergraduate Academic Advisement.
Q
How can I access my student’s grades, academic
standing, and tuition and fees status?
A
There are two forms you and your student must sign in order for you to have
access to any of their records. Contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office at
(405) 974-2727 and the Financial Aid Office at (405) 974-3334 for the two release
of information forms.
Q
How are grades reported?
Q
How does my student set up an email account?
A
Students can access their grades online through their UCONNECT account.
A
Your student has an email account automatically set up for them through
the UCONNECT portal. If your student is unsure of their UCONNECT login
information, they can visit uconnect.uco.edu with their UCO student ID number.
Step-by-step instructions are provided for retrieval of a UCONNECT username
and password.
Q
If my student needs to miss class due to illness, injury
or family emergency, what should he or she do?
A
In case of emergency or illness, students should contact their professor or the
college dean’s office for assistance. In the event of an anticipated long-term
absence, students can also contact the Student Conduct Office for assistance at
(405) 974-2361.
Q
How can my student find information about campus jobs?

and being open to all types of jobs. Visit jobs.uco.edu for a complete listing of
on-campus jobs.
Q
How does UCO address drug and alcohol use and abuse?
A
University of Central Oklahoma is a “dry campus.” We do not allow alcohol in

tolerated at the university, and students in violation are subject to appropriate
disciplinary sanctions. Several peer education programs are in place to educate
students on issues related to drug and alcohol use and abuse.

Who do I talk to about billing questions?
A
Contact the Bursar office at (405) 974-2228 for questions about your statements.
Remember, your student can access billing information and online payment
options by logging in to UCONNECT.
Q
Q
My student is moving off campus. What are some resources
they can access to help them with their search?
What can I do as a parent to support my student
during the beginning of the next semester?
A
A
The Office of Commuter Student Services is available to help students find a
place to live in the Edmond area. Contact the office with questions at
(405) 974-3655 or ptadlock@uco.edu.
Recognizing nonperformance in your student is a challenge — especially at
long distance. One of the most important things a parent can do for a collegeage student is to demonstrate interest. Being interested is different from being
demanding. It is more “I’d like to know” than “You owe me this information.” ■
