BUILDER SPOTLIGHT MARK KALENA CONSTRUCTION WRITER | MARY ANN HUMPHREY PHOTOS | DIETRICH FLOETER PHOTOGRAPHY 115 WINTER 2015 BUILDER SPOTLIGHT | Mark Kalena Construction T This 6,300 square foot Contemporary Mission style home in Glen Arbor was not just a dream house for the homeowners, but the dream job of a lifetime for builder Mark Kalena of Kalena Construction, who was involved in all phases of this challenging, yet rewarding build. “The homeowners allowed me to make many interior and exterior design and build choices,” he says. “Hardly anyone gives you that type of latitude in today’s world.” “They gave me a lot of leeway, even trim and flooring colors,” Mark adds. “They were very happy with the results.” The five bedroom, four and a half bath modern contemporary home’s interior is Scandinavian style, featuring light colors, blonde wood, and walls of windows. One of the interior walls displays a large granite slab the homeowner installed as décor. Its flowing patterns and shades are reminiscent of the sand and water. “When you look at it, it seems like you’re looking at Lake Michigan,” Mark says. The steel reinforcements are extensive in this home, running from the foundation up to the third floor, to accommodate the weight load of not just the home, but the decorative granite slab as well. The kitchen, which includes a large butler’s pantry, opens onto the living and dining areas, all overlooking the lake. The homeowners enjoy cooking and entertaining, and the pantry is built to meet the task, with a meat processing area, an extra refrigerator, additional counter space, and a full size wine cool- MichiganHomeandLifestyle.com 116 BUILDER SPOTLIGHT | Mark Kalena Construction BUILDER SPOTLIGHT | Mark Kalena Construction er. Becky Mumy of Northwood Kitchens designed the cabinetry throughout the home, using Rough Sawn Euro Oak Veneer manufactured by Wood Mode in many of the rooms. It combines random wood planks of varying tones and textures. The “Matte Shoreline Finish” is a true gray with hand padded contrasts and soft beige glazing. The colors were chosen to complement and reflect the home’s lakeshore location. The stovetop venting is unobtrusive yet interesting as it consists of two cylindrical tubes over the large island. The sliding etched Italian glass doors are hung in barn door fashion in the entryway and off the kitchen leading into a bedroom suite. They feature a tree design from Italy. The outdoor hot tub has a glass wall surround for privacy, with etched flower graphics to compliment the interior glass doors. Continuing the contemporary feel, the stairway system features a freestanding steel modern staircase, stainless steel rails and cable which ascend three stories. “It’s really quite a showpiece,” Mark notes. “You can stand on the main floor and look up to the third floor, where we have a beautiful observatory, or “Eagles Nest” to take in the views.” A convenient elevator was included in the home as well and is easy to reach from both front and back entrances to the home and goes up to the second floor. The guest apartment on the second floor features its own open kitchen/ living area, two bedrooms, and a walk in tub in the bathroom. The design insures guest comfort and privacy but easy access to the day to day household activity. The home includes a spa like master bathroom, with a huge walk through shower which can be accessed from either the master bathroom or the exercise room. The shower also features a ceiling mounted rain showerhead and multiple wall spray points. TC Mirror and Shower Door was brought in to handle the glass walls in the shower. Next to the shower is a two person jetted tub, and if that isn’t enough, both have views of Lake Michigan. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the “extras” in the home that add to the overall comfort of the homeowners such as the outdoor access that leads to a shower area with a steam room/sauna, or the party size hot tub. Both can be approached from one of the home’s many exterior decks. 117 WINTER 2015 BUILDER SPOTLIGHT | Mark Kalena Construction BUILDER SPOTLIGHT | Mark Kalena Construction The granite wall slabs flowing patterns and shades are reminiscent of the sand and water. “When you look at it, it seems like you’re looking at Lake Michigan,” Mark says. All of the extensive decking in this home is made from porcelain wood grain tile and includes an extra-large “party” deck on the third floor. In fact, they used over 4,000 square feet of tile, quite a significant amount, Mark says. The second and third floor decks were designed as roofs for the house as well as open space for the family. “I had to use roofing membrane that accepts tile,” Mark adds. And let’s not forget the wraparound deck that faces the water and can fit a wonderful gathering for an extended family. The home’s large size, its stone exterior and the way it is situated require a geosystem involving 16 wells which recover heat from groundwater. “It’s energy efficient, and is used for air conditioning as well,” Mark says. It’s also a “smart home”—the electrical and HVAC can be controlled by computer, tablet or cell from anywhere. The landscaping and irrigation support hundreds of native plants. The lawn has a robot mower that automatically heads back to the charging station when the battery starts to get low, so the outdoor landscaping requires very little maintenance. And all of it is part of the “smart” set up. Fitting in to the environment naturally was important to the homeowners. So, the wooded driveway is long and winding, the landscaping is primarily native plants and dune grass, and the path to the water begins with a cement grid planted with a Creeping Thyme groundcover and turns into less conspicuous wooden path the color of sand. Last but not least is the oversize two car garage which is finished with a tile floor and beautiful wood carriage doors. Mark is a native of the Sleeping Bear Dunes area, and says working there all his life has been beneficial to his business. He notes that having firsthand knowledge of the harsh environment is critical in planning and building homes in the area. “Within the last season, from winter to summer we have seen temperatures from minus 30 to over 90 degrees,” he says. “Mix in some 90 mile an hour winds, the ice, the snow and the rain – homes can be in trouble if they’re not properly built.” Building a home like this demands highly skilled craftsmanship, and Mark says he accepts no less. He adds that being hands-on involved with all phases of building this home was a dream come true for him. “In the end, you get to reflect on your work and say, this is something to be proud of.” Mark also gives credit to Steve and Jackie Cuson of Sweetwater Contracting, who were a large part of the construction process. q MichiganHomeandLifestyle.com 118 119 WINTER 2015 BUILDER SPOTLIGHT | Mark Kalena Construction BUILDER SPOTLIGHT | Mark Kalena Construction MichiganHomeandLifestyle.com 120 121 WINTER 2015 BUILDER SPOTLIGHT | Mark Kalena Construction MARK KALENA CONSTRUCTION YEARS IN BUSINESS: 25 BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY: I have never been able to accept anything less than highly skilled craftsmanship in this business.
