It concentrates on the downtown area and gives

and descriptions of 27 sites. Embellish your tour with the
free use of iPods loaded with 16 stories about New Ulm’s
past. While focusing on buildings, these four-minute

of abolitionist Carrie Nation’s visit to New Ulm and goes
on to explain New Ulm’s brewing past and the impact of
prohibition. A credit card imprint will be needed to
secure the use of these iPods. The stories can also be preloaded onto your own iPod or viewed at

Dance your lederhosen off at our many festivals. Ride
through our scenic river valley or explore the oakshaded bluffs and sand-bottomed pool of
Flandrau State Park. Stroll around downtown
and hear history and our 45-foot-tall
Glockenspiel come alive. Toast one of
America's oldest brewing traditions at the
August Schell Brewery. Or climb to the top of our
Hermann Monument for a breath-taking view.
In New Ulm, settled by German immigrants in 1854,
four years before Minnesota became a state, we've
been crafting fine brews and much, much more for
more than a century. Today this community, 90 miles
southwest of Minneapolis/St. Paul, offers something
for everyone, from one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants to important historical sites, inviting bed and
breakfasts and a steady stream of live music and
lively conversation. Most importantly, it's still a place
where friends old and new are greeted with a warm
welcome.
We invite you to take a look around
our website and see what makes
New Ulm so unique, and then contact us for help planning your visit. We
promise you'll want to
come back again and
again, because in New
Ulm - there's always something special brewing.

New Ulm Visitor Guide 2012
things to see
& do in New Ulm
1. Dance with a gnome. At all of our major festivals, you'll meet New Ulm's "ambassadors," costumed
gnomes and the masked Narren, all eager to welcome new faces. So go ahead and ask them to dance. (We
promise they'll say, “Yes!”)
2. Sample beer the way it should be...none of that watered-down, mass-produced stuff. At the August
Schell Brewery, you can try a variety of our rich, handcrafted beers while sitting elbow-to-elbow with friends
in the new tap room.
3. Ski by the pale moonlight. Flandrau State Park keeps its eight miles of trails well groomed throughout
the winter. Since the park is located right in town, you can grab your cross-country skis and enjoy a moonlit trek a few times each winter - and not be late to dinner. In summer, hiking trails and a sand-bottomed
pool await.
4. Go cuckoo...as in cuckoo clocks...or nutcrackers...or candy, glassware, music boxes and steins. New Ulm's
shops offer specialty items straight from the old country, as well as a full range of other treasures.
5. Tune in to history. Your kids might be surprised when you tell them to put the ear buds in, not take
them out. With New Ulm's unique downtown history iPod tour, the whole family can take a walk and learn
about the area's past. Nothing dull about it.
6. Roll on the river. Get your friends together and float on the river. Bring your tubes, boats or canoes anytime - we've got two rivers just waiting for you.
7. Picnic in the Park. Bring your blanket and picnic basket to German Park on Monday nights and spread
out beside the fountain for our free outdoor summer concert series. The lineup ranges from polka to
Broadway melodies, marches, and a variety of other musical styles. For the kids, there’s the playground and
New Ulm’s Puppet Wagon.
8. Dine like the Deutsche. Many of New Ulm's restaurants and almost all of its festivals and special events
serve up traditional German cooking, from brats and landjaegers to sauerbraten and sauerkraut. It’s authentic Deutschland cuisine, minus the airfare.
9. Sleep as late as you like. Someone else can make breakfast when you stay at any of New Ulm's lodging choices. You'll also get warm surroundings, beautifully restored architecture and expert advice on local
attractions and events.
10. Scale new heights. Drive to the top of the Center Street hill, then climb a spiral staircase to the cupola
below the towering Hermann Monument for a spectacular view of the valley that stretches for miles.
German Park and
“Music in the Park”
200 North German
You must visit German Park in downtown New Ulm.
It is full of monuments, flowers and the Angel
Fountain. It’s great for a lunch break or to stroll
among the beauty.
Every Monday night in summer (June 4 to August 27,
2012) at 7:00 pm are free music concerts. Bring a blanket or folding chair and enjoy a wide variety of music in
a gorgeous setting.

August Schell Brewing Co.
In 1860, German immigrant August Schell broke ground for the
August Schell Brewing Company and paved the way for a 152-yearold family tradition. With five generations of Schell descendants to
operate the brewery, the August Schell Brewing Company claims
the title as the second-oldest, family-owned brewery in the nation
and holds the title as the oldest brewery in Minnesota. 152 years
later, Schell's still specializes in brewing German-style lagers, the
backbone on which it was founded a century and a-half ago.
In addition to the 14 craft beers that Schell's produces, since 2002
they have adopted Grain Belt, Grain Belt Premium Light and
Nordeast into the family. They have brewed the Grain Belt label at
Schell's Brewery for the past nine years. This acquisition allowed
Schell's to do its part in preserving another legendary Minnesota
beer.
Visit this majestic little brewery tucked away in the rolling hillside of
the Cottonwood River, and witness the beauty of the grounds while
experiencing the legacy and heritage of the past 152 years. Stroll
the beautiful gardens, get a glimpse of Schell's unique history in the
Museum of Brewing, and browse the 2,000-square-foot Gift Shop.
Enjoy a brewery tour and sample some of America's finest beers.
Schell's Visitor Center also features a Rathskeller Tap Room, its architecture reminiscent of old-world, German-style Rathskellers. When
you come to visit, make sure to use the parking lot located just
below the Visitor Center.
If you would like to witness the tradition, experience 152 years of
fine brewing, or learn more about Schell's Brewery, visit the brewery or check out their website at www.schellsbrewery.com .

The Concord Singers
They were founded in 1931 and have been
dubbed New Ulm’s “Ambassadors of Good
Will.” The singers began as a group of men united in the love of song and have performed in
several foreign lands and widely across America.
They have appeared many times on radio and
TV and have several CDs and tapes available.
Their repertoire of “Festive German Music” will
please you when you’re in New Ulm; consider
hiring them for your next festival!

New Ulm’s Ambassadors
The Gnomes
The Heinzelmannchen family includes Hans, his wife Carolla,
their son Johann and daughter Angelika. These gnomes, along
with Gertie the Goose and the three Morel Mushrooms (Max,
Moritz and Metta), have become a featured attraction at New
Ulm festivals over the years. Be sure to be on the lookout for
them, and have your camera handy!
The Narren
“The Narren” (or “The Fools,” in German) characters have been
appearing at New Ulm and other festivals since 1989. With their
hand-carved wooden masks and colorful costumes, they can be
found mingling with the crowd or leading a snake dance. Each
one of the Narren has his or her own unique personality and story
and is often looked upon as the relative everyone has, but nobody
wants to claim!
Historic Preservation
Miss New Ulm Court
New Ulm was designated a "Preserve America
City" by the President’s Advisory Council on Historic
Preservation in 2006. Soon after, we received several grants to fund work on our historic downtown, including the creation of our 16 video podcasts, a new Walking Tour guide, new historic
markers and our first "Eyewitness to History,”
Frederick Kiesling.
Join the Miss New Ulm Court at many of our
festivals. They are: Princess Jatia Traulich, Miss
New Ulm Kelsy Sabatino, and Princess Clair
Schwarz.

Glockenspiel
Located downtown, the 45-foot-tall Glockenspiel’s bells can be heard chiming
throughout the day and playing programmed pieces at noon, 3 PM and 5 PM. The
Glockenspiel houses 37 bells with a total weight of more than two tons. Twelve figurines depicting characters from the city’s history rotate on a circulating stage during performances. From Thanksgiving to early January, the figurines of a three-piece
polka band that stand directly below one of the clock faces are replaced with a nativity scene. It is one of the few free-standing carillons of its size in the world.
Location: 327 North Minnesota Street
Hours: Noon, 3 & 5 PM daily; plus 10:30 AM, 1 PM during festivals
Way of the Cross
New Ulm’s Way of the Cross was completed in 1904 and renovated in 2004. Its 14 stations, with statues imported from Bavaria, provide a quiet, reflective walk up a gentle incline to a chapel dedicated to the Mother of Sorrows. Entrusted to the Diocese
of New Ulm, the Way of the Cross is located on the 5th North hill, behind the New
Ulm Medical Center, and includes a nearby memorial to Father Alexander Berghold,
an instrumental priest in the 1800s who, along with Sister Flavia of the Poor
Handmaids of Jesus Christ, initiated the project.
Location: 1500 5th North, behind the Medical Center
Hours: Daily from April to October
Heritage Tree
When German settlers founded New Ulm, they used a stately oak tree that still stands at 3rd
South and German Streets as the reference point for the town plat. One hundred and fifty
years later, the town’s residents celebrated New Ulm’s anniversary with a different type of tree.
Reminiscent of those that decorate German towns, the Heritage Tree depicts different stages
of the town’s history, from a riverboat to the railroad, the New Ulm Battery and a beer wagon.
A plaque explains the significance of each item.
Location: 101 South Minnesota Street
MLC Chapel
Dedicated in April 2010, the Chapel of the Christ was built to commemorate the
150th anniversary of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Its soaring beams,
fine artistry, and musical emphasis make it a wonderful addition to the college’s
mission – preparing workers for carrying the gospel of Christ to the world. The 57
rank Schantz organ is the perfect instrument for the chapel’s superior acoustics.
Cathedral
The present building is the third church on this location, with the other two lost to
the Dakota War and a tornado in 1881. Begun in 1890 and not finished until 1903,
it is a fine example of German Baroque architecture. People of all faiths are welcome
to visit the glorious interior, originally created by local artists Alexander
Schwendinger, Christ Heller and Anton Gag. The scene in the church’s apse with God
the Father presiding over Heaven and Earth is stunning, as is the intricate main altar.

Hermann
Monument
This 102-foot monument towering over New Ulm depicts
Hermann the Cherusci, the
ancient hero whose army liberated Germany from Roman
rule in 9 A.D. As German immigrants came to the United
States, the legend of Hermann
as the father of German independence and a symbol of
honor and pride came with
them. In 1840, a national
“Order of the Sons of
Hermann” was founded in
New York. In 1887, the Order
commissioned a statue of
Hermann similar to the one in
Germany - to be erected in
New Ulm. It took nearly a
decade to complete the more
than 4,000-pound statue, designated by the U.S. Congress
in 2000 as a national symbol of
German heritage. Visitors may
climb a staircase to the base of
the statue for a stunning,
panoramic view of New Ulm
and the river valley (note people in photo). The monument
sits on the grounds of
Hermann Heights Park, which
has playground equipment
and picnic facilities.
Location: 14 Monument Street, at the top
of the Center Street hill
Hours: 10AM-7PM
Dates: Saturdays and Sundays in May and
September; Daily from Memorial Day (May
28) to Labor Day (Sept. 3); Open Fridays,
Saturdays and Sundays the first three weekends in October
Admission: $2.25 per person; Ages 5 and
under are free; Children under 16 years of
age must be accompanied by an adult;

Wanda Gag House
The childhood home of Wanda
Gag, author of the still-popular
children’s book “Millions of Cats,”
was designed and built by her
father, Anton, in 1894. The Gag
family were Bohemians in both
senses of the word; they were
from the country of Bohemia and
were known for an unconventional lifestyle. Anton incorporated
several artistic touches in his home,
such as faux-woodwork and handstenciled wall borders, and had his
artist studio upstairs under his skylight. Wanda went on to national
fame with her books and artworks, and many of them are now
housed in various prestigious
museums. The Queen Anne-style
home has been restored and now
houses lithographs and paintings
by Wanda Gag, paintings by
Anton Gag and Flavia Gag, another of the talented children. Also,
books by Wanda and Flavia are displayed. The gift shop offers books
by Wanda, about Wanda and the
Gag family, T-shirts, sweatshirts,
jewelry, etc.

Turner Hall
Gov. Lind House
Harkin Store
This stately 1887 Queen Annestyle home along Center Street
was once the home of Governor
John Lind, the 14th Governor of
Minnesota and the first Swedishborn American to serve in the U.S.
Congress. In addition to his political service to Minnesota, he was
the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico
and has been honored by the
King of Sweden with medals and
decrees that are proudly displayed in the home, along with
large paintings of Mr. and Mrs.
Lind,
beautiful
woodwork
extending to the elaborate staircase, Victorian square grand
piano and other elegant furnishings. It has been restored to its
original beauty, including the
expansive front porch and distinctive tower. As proof of its lovely
restoration, the house is on the
National Register of Historic
Buildings. The home is open for
tours and special events and can
be rented for receptions and
other functions.
In the late 1800s, riverboat
travelers along the Minnesota
River would stop in a small hamlet known as West Newton, home
to a hotel, sawmill, brewery, livery
and general store. Today, all that
remains of West Newton is the
Harkin Store, the general store
that seems to have been frozen in
time along County Rd. 21 just outside New Ulm. Stored on the
shelves are fabrics, storage vessels, chinaware, cooking utensils
and medicines. As much as 40%
of the inventory is original! The
store operated from 1870 until
1901, when its post office function was usurped by Rural Free
Delivery to the area farmers.
Costumed guides host programs
most summer Sundays, and you
can still sit on the front porch and
look out at the rolling river. It is
owned

In 1856, many of the Turners
who had come from Cincinnati to
help settle New Ulm gathered in a
log-built store to form the New
Ulm Turnverein, dedicated to
physical fitness, education and
gymnastics. Two years later they
built their first Turner Hall on a
full city block, at the same location as the existing Turner Hall
and Ratskeller. Though the first
Turner Hall burned during the
Dakota War of 1862, the Turners
rebuilt, and portions of the existing building date as far back as
1873. Today, Turner Hall still provides a place for social and civic
gatherings and gymnastics, as
well as dining. In the Ratskeller,
you can enjoy a beverage, lunch
or dinner while taking in more
than 70 feet of stunning murals
of
Switzerland,
Italy
and
Germany. An Italian artist painted
the scenes in 1873. They were
restored in 1999.

“The U.S.-Dakota War of 1862”
A Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary
The U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 was the major event in New Ulm’s history and 2012
marks the 150th Anniversary of that event. A group was formed in 2009 to begin planning
a way to commemorate this event. They decided that they would concentrate on
the events in Brown County (of which New Ulm is the County Seat).
When deciding on the timing of the elements to mark the Commemoration, they
chose to center it, as closely as possible, around the actual time of the events in Brown
County. Therefore, you will see that the third week in August has been chosen. (The actual dates
of the two “Battles of New Ulm” were August 19 and August 23, 1862.)
Multiple locations and organizations make up the entire week-long Commemoration
and so care will need to be taken to be sure you are in the right place, at the right time.
By using the website: www.browncountydakotawarcommemoration.com you will be able
to plan your activities. When in doubt, contact the Chamber of Commerce ( 507-233-4300),
as they will have the master schedule, as will the Brown County Historical Society ( 507-233-2616).

event, including a renovated third-floor exhibit. The research library features
files on over 5,000 Brown County families. The Bookstore carries a wide variety of books on city and county history. A map of Brown County’s historically
significant sites and a detailed painting of New Ulm during the Dakota War

New Ulm Visitor Guide 2012
In 1856 the first GermanBohemians arrived in New Ulm.
Many of them settled near the river
along the southern boundaries of
the town, in an area that came to
be called “Goosetown” - for their
practice of keeping flocks of geese.
In 1984, an organization developed
to study their ancestors, with an
effort to create a monument to
honor those same people.
Erected in 1991 to honor immigrants from the area known at the
time as Bohemia (now the western
Czech Republic), this 7 1/2 -foot-tall
granite monument features a statue of a father, mother and child. On
the back, the parents legs are raised
to represent their love of music and
dancing, valued traditions brought
from “the old country.” On stone
pavers at the base of the monument are the names of 350
German-Bohemian families who
settled in New Ulm.

Brown County
Defenders
Veterans Memorial Monument
The Brown County Veterans
Memorial was dedicated on
Veteran's Day, 1999. This memorial
was designed by C.J. Schmidtke
and received recognition in a
national trade magazine for its
unique features. The project was
initiated and developed by the
Brown County Veterans Council.
This memorial was presented to
Brown County as a lasting tribute
to past, present and future veterans who honorably served in the
Armed Services of the United
States of America during periods of
peacetime and designated periods
of armed conflict.
The Eternal Flame, funded by a
grant from the New Ulm Area
Foundation, was installed in 2001
to draw attention to the memorial
in recognition of those men and
women who served to preserve
freedom in the free nations of the
world.
There are currently 2,065 commemorative paver blocks at the
memorial site; space for 70 pavers
remains. Contact the Brown
County Veterans Service Office for
information on purchasing a paver
block at 507-233-6636.
Location: 14 South State Street,
on the front yard of the Brown
County Courthouse
Erected by the State of
Minnesota in 1891, this monument honors those who defended
New Ulm during the Dakota War.
The artwork at the base was created by New Ulm artist, Anton Gag.
Originally sited at the intersection of State and Center Streets,
the monument was moved to its
present location in 1917 for safety
reasons due to the rising use of
automobiles.
Walk up to the monument
(accessible

bas-reliefs on the base and read
the inscriptions. Tap on the monument, and you’ll discover that the

New Ulm Battery
The New Ulm Battery is a civilian artillery unit of Civil War era - believed to be the only
one of its kind in the United States. It was formed as a defensive measure in January, 1863,
six months after the Dakota War, to protect New Ulm from any further incursions. The city
was not attacked again, and the group has yet to fire a shot in anger.
You can see Battery items at 1st North and Broadway in a special glass-fronted room next
to City Hall. The New Ulm Battery accepts local and out-of-town engagements.

Schell’s Bock Fest
Schell’s Bock Fest takes place outdoors on the grounds of
Schell’s brewery. Enjoy an award-winning beer or root beer
beside a big bonfire, a few thousand friends, and live music.
A highlight of the day is the Bock Medallion Hunt, where
participants use clues to find the “bocks” (a gruff and stubborn goat of winter) hidden in the adjoining woods, to win
cash and merchandise prizes.
Location: Schell’s Brewery, parking around the area, shuttle
or taxi drop-offs recommended.
Fasching “A German Mardi Gras”
Fasching is an old carnival tradition that originated
in the European Alps to chase away winter. Each
year, strips of cloth are strung across downtown
streets in the German peasant tradition, and “The
Narren,” masked characters in colorful costumes,
walk the streets inviting people to the party. Held at
Turner Hall, Fasching includes non-stop music, food
and dancing; costumes are encouraged for the
evening costume contest.

Our March 17 celebration includes a parade, social
hour, dinner and program and entertainment. Even
though New Ulm is best known for its German history, the New Ulm St. Patrick’s Day celebration is the
oldest continuous Irish parade in Minnesota. This
event is clearly one of the least publicized, but one
of the most enjoyable in southern Minnesota. It is
open to everyone and fun for everyone Irish and
those that wish they were. Plan on coming to New
Ulm on March 17, starting with the 5 PM parade.

Christmas Traditions
Many of America’s wonderful Christmas traditions began in
Germany. Christmas trees, Advent wreaths, nutcrackers, and many other traditions can be discovered in many of our
attractions, homes and shops. Natural decorations have been a city tradition in New Ulm since 1925. The downtown
business district is completely draped with natural evergreen boughs and lights. Christmas trees adorned with red
bows line the sidewalk.
Driving through the residential areas of New Ulm is like driving through a Christmas fantasy land. Millions of tiny
lights decorate the homes, sharing the Christmas spirit city-wide. Surrounding the Glockenspiel are tiny white lights,
giving the park a magical look.
Parade of Lights
The Parade of Lights heralds the official arrival of Santa Claus to New Ulm. Over 50 units in the parade are
covered with twinkling Christmas lights. This magical event takes place the Friday evening after Thanksgiving
at 6 pm in downtown New Ulm. Children of all ages will delight in this parade. Don’t miss this unique
entrance by Santa on November 23, 2012.
St. Nikolaus Day
Children are invited to gather in New Ulm to welcome the arrival of St. Nikolaus.
Dressed in traditional costumes, St. Nikolaus and his sidekick Krumpus describe the
German and Austrian legends of St. Nikolaus and how they tie into our earliest celebrations of Christmas. Entertainment, prizes and treats round out the fun-filled
gathering. Held in early December. Call 233-4300 for details.
Walk to the ‘Glock
Join us in mid-December for a traditional
Christmas gathering at Schonlau Park, in front of
the Glockenspiel with its lights and Christmas figurines. Carry candles as we walk downtown from
the Visitor Center to the Glockenspiel, lead by a Victorian-costumed
choral group. Visit with Santa Claus at the park and enjoy a bonfire, light
refreshments and caroling. “It looked like a Norman Rockwell painting,”
one of the participants said of last year’s gathering. We hope to see you there!

A few suggestions to help you plan your visit...
If you only have
one day:
1 Start downtown with
breakfast at one of our cafe’s
or coffee shops and spend a
little time chatting with the
locals.
2 Stop by the Convention
and Visitors Bureau to pick up
an iPod preloaded with audio and video podcasts
about New Ulm's historic downtown. As you walk
from shop to shop, pause to learn about what
happened a century or more ago, right where you're
standing. (Pick up a few souvenirs while you're at it!)
LADIES WEEKEND:
You and the girls want to get away? We've got you covered.
Day One:
3
Head to the Ratskellar at Turner Hall for lunch and a
cold beverage, and to admire the uncovered and
restored murals of Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
1
Start your day at Cornerstone Coffee, located in an
1865 building that is one of the last of the original
business buildings still standing in New Ulm.
4
Work off your meal with a climb to the top of
Hermann Monument, where you'll be rewarded with
a panoramic view of the river valley.
2
Get ready to shop, shop, shop. New Ulm is filled with
stores you won't find anywhere else. Be sure to
venture outside downtown to Domeier's German
store, a cozy shop stocked with items straight from
the old country. And don't forget Weeds & Reeds on
the other side of downtown, where a 1926 gas station
is now filled with vintage and eclectic gifts.
3
Have lunch beside the fireplace at Lola's Larkspur
Market, where you'll find soups and sandwiches,
salads, and more, in addition to a full wine list.
4
If you're up for more shopping, New Ulm will keep
you occupied. Or, head to one of our salons for a
relaxing manicure and pedicure.
5
Make the short trip out to the Morgan Creek
Vineyard to sample varietals from Minnesota's only
underground winery.
5
6
Snag a ticket for a tour of the August Schell Brewery.
The nearly one-hour tour includes a walk through the
old brew house, a video of today's brewing operations
and plenty of time to sample beers in the Schells’ tap
room. Afterward, wander through the carefully
tended gardens, say hello to the deer and peacocks or
visit the gift shop.
Treat yourself to an authentic German dinner at one of
our restaurants, and enjoy the nightlife along
Minnesota Street.
If you have a whole weekend:
Start with the one-day suggested itinerary above.
On day two:
1
Start the day with a bike ride on the 13-mile bike
loop around town, taking in the river or stopping in
nearby parks. Or, head to Flandrau State Park for a
hike or a dip in the sand-bottomed pool.
2
Grab takeout from one of our restaurants and enjoy a
picnic by the fountain in German Park.
3
Catch an afternoon performance at the Glockenspiel,
one of the few freestanding carillons of its size in the
world.
4
Play a round of golf at the New Ulm Country Club.
If you're feeling less ambitious, make
it mini-golf at the Putting Green.
5
26
Ready to put your feet up and call it
a day? Head to the Grand Kabaret
downtown to take in some spirited
entertainment that could range
from a jazz combo, a solo guitarist,
vocal duos and even poetry
readings. Refresh your body with
some light food and enjoy tasty
wine selections.
New Ulm Visitor Guide 2012
Day Two:
1
Take a walk along the Cottonwood River in Flandrau
State Park, or ride your bikes on New Ulm's 13 mile
bike loop around town.
2
Tour the stately Lind House, the restored one-time
home of Minnesota's 14th governor.
3
At the childhood home of children's author Wanda
Gag, admire lithographs and paintings by Wanda Gag
and other members of her family.
4
Have lunch at the famous Veigel's Kaiserhoff, known
for its braised ribs, or Otto’s Feierhaus for their
German Specialties.
5
Take a tour of the August Schell brewery and gardens,
where you'll
sample
awardwinning
beers
in some of
the city's
most
beautiful
surroundings.
FAMILY
GETAWAY
Load the family in the car; you're ready to go.
Day One:
1
Take the kids to Riverside Park. Let them climb all over the
"pirate ship playground" and meet Gertie the Goose, the
statue that is an unofficial mascot of the area known as
Goosetown. Or bring the fishing poles and drop a line in the
water, right where riverboats docked a century and a-half ago.
2
Head to the skate park for some exciting jumps, or ride
your bikes along the former railroad bed that is now a
paved, five-mile regional trail.
3
Grab a quick lunch at any of New Ulm's casual restaurants,
saving room for some "gnome-made" fudge from the Country Loft.
4
At the August Schell brewery, the kids can enjoy 1919 Root Beer while adults sample craft beers following an approximate
one-hour tour. On the grounds surrounding the brewery, come face-to-feather with peacocks or see if the kids can spot
the little gnomes "hiding" through-out the gardens.
5
Try your skills at the Putting Green miniature golf course before a swim in the hotel pool.
Day Two:
1
Climb to the top of Hermann Monument to take in the sights from high atop the town. The park surrounding the monument also has
playground equipment and picnic shelters.
2
Hike through Flandrau State Park, or take in one of the naturalist-led programs. During warm months, hit the beach at Flandrau's
sand-bottomed pool.
3
4
5
Have an authentic German lunch at one of New Ulm's restaurants. (Don't worry, your picky eaters always have the kids’ menu.)
Watch the 12 figurines from New Ulm's history "perform" from their perch inside the 45-foot-tall Glockenspiel.
Head a few miles outside town to the Harkin Store, a general store that served the once-thriving riverside town of West Newton in the
late 1800s. Costumed guides welcome visitors each Sunday throughout the summer, leading activities for families and teaching about
life during the 19th Century.
HISTORY BUFF WEEKEND History buffs will find their plates full on a visit to New Ulm.
Day One:
1
Begin with the iPod tour of historic downtown buildings. The iPods, available at the Convention and Visitors Bureau, are preloaded with
more than a dozen audio and video podcasts about significant events in the city's history. A corresponding map will guide your way.
2
A few blocks away, find the whimsical Heritage Tree, a replica of those that decorate German communities. Each item on the tree ("planted"
for New Ulm's 150th anniversary in 2004) represents a prominent figure in the city's history.
3
Eat lunch at the Ratskeller inside the historic Turner Hall. The Turners were among the first settlers of New Ulm, building their original
structure on this same site. On the walls of the Ratskeller are murals painted by an Italian artist in 1873. They were uncovered and restored
in 1999.
4
Head to the Brown County Historical Museum, housed in the former New Ulm Post Office. The building itself is on the National Register of
Historic Places. Inside, check out exhibits on the Dakota War and the county's farming heritage.
5
Learn how America's second-oldest family-owned brewery survived the Dakota War, Prohibition and much more during a tour of the
August Schell Brewery.
6

Learn about musical highlights of Minnesota with an audio tour of the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame.
Spend the night in one of New Ulm's restored Bed and Breakfasts, each an architectural gem.
Day Two:
1
Take a tour of New Ulm's monuments, including the Defenders and German-Bohemian monuments, and the old steamboat landing in
Riverside Park, where riverboats brought settlers and supplies.
2
Visit the John Lind House, an 1887 Queen-Anne-style home that belonged to Minnesota's 14th governor, the first Swedish-born American
to be elected to Congress.
3
Head to the Wanda Gag House, where the famous children's book author spent her childhood - an 1894 house designed and constructed
by her artist father, Anton Gag.
4
5
Grab lunch in our historic downtown.
6
Have coffee at the Cornerstone, an 1865 building with an exterior virtually unchanged since the Civil
War era, and ask Lori about the famous "Christmas Murder" that befell one of the men who built the
structure.
7
Drive out of town to the Harkin Store, the only remaining structure from the 19th-century river town of
West Newton, before continuing to Fort Ridgley, a key training ground for Civil War soldiers that also
played a critical role in the Dakota War. The site is located about 15 miles from New Ulm, near the town
of Fairfax.
Admire the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, with its numerous paintings of saints and religious scenes, some
dating back more than a century. The cornerstone for the Cathedral was laid in 1890, the steeple in 1893
and the interior completed in 1903.

Ulm's distinctive shops. Whether it's a cuckoo clock imported from Germany, a

If it’s authentic German cuisine
you're after, New Ulm might seem a
little bit like paradise. Sure, we've
got some of Minnesota's best
bratwurst and sauerkraut, sauerbraten and spaetzle, and a brewery full
of German beer to wash it down; but New Ulm's dining scene doesn't start and end there. You'll also find Mexican, Chinese, and
everything in between, in family-style eateries, fast food and casual settings, as well as more upscale dining and a nearby winery.

pool, beach, sand volleyball court, playground equipment and fire and horseshoe pits. The park has 88 campsites in

few city parks and even some farm land. The trail is clearly marked and largely shaded, with benches along the way in

Riverside Park: In the mid-1800s, the banks of the river near Riverside Park
welcomed steamboats carrying soldiers, supplies and German settlers. Today it is
home to the Regional River History and Information Center and a new "pirate

German Park: Enjoy the free concert series during the summer months, when
audiences spread out on the hillside to hear musical groups perform in German

between 2nd and 3rd North Streets.
Other parks: New Ulm has more than a dozen other parks, with two ninehole disc golf courses, two wading pools, soccer and ball fields, sledding hills

you will see at our festivals.
Herbie the Hedgehog: This charming 4-foot bronze sculpture was
created by local artist, Jason Jasperson, and is located in German Park.

Hunting
This city, located between two rivers, is a mecca for hunters:
small game, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, pheasants, ducks and
geese, to name a few. Deer hunting also has a very pleasurable
and successful season around New Ulm.
For a rewarding hunting experience, try River Ridge Gun Club,
a private reserve with over 1,000 acres providing 14 different
hunting areas. For more information, call 507-359-5770.
Fishing
New Ulm has good fishing in nearby Clear Lake and Lake
Hanska. Cooperative efforts led by local conservation and government groups have brought these two lakes back to be successful fishing lakes.
One of Minnesota's most diverse fishing possibilities is the
Minnesota River. Within 10 miles on either side of New Ulm,
the river produces large numbers of catfish and trophy walleye.
The Cottonwood River also flows through New Ulm and has
small-mouth bass, along with a good number of northerns.
Cross-Country Skiing
Flandrau State Park, bordering the city limits, has miles of
groomed cross-country trails with boot and ski rentals available.
Ice Skating
In addition to our indoor rinks at the Civic Center, Harman Park
has two lighted hockey rinks and one lighted open-skate rink,
with a warming house and restroom.
Bicycling
A paved recreational trail, part of the 13-mile biking loop, runs
for five miles, making it the perfect path for an easy family ride
or run. You'll travel past Mueller and German Parks, past farm
land and businesses; and it's clearly marked and largely shaded,
with benches along the way if you need a rest. Location:
Between 24th North & Broadway and 20th South & German.
For more "extreme" sports, there is a public BMX Park open
between May and September and a Skate Park for use by inline
skaters or skateboarders.
Locations: BMX - 316 Third South; Skate Park - 315 First South.
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
The DNR's Regional Office, just south of New Ulm, is the place
to obtain information on outdoor recreation opportunities and
natural resources, such as hiking, biking, native prairies, fishing,
hunting, wildlife watching, snowmobiling, camping, canoeing
and river maps. Location: 261 Highway 15 South.

Bird Watching
Bird watchers will love the many opportunities for birding in and
around New Ulm! Flandrau State Park, on the southern city
boundaries, has recorded up to 158 different specie sightings. Fifteen miles east is Swan Lake, which is a wildlife preserve with many varieties of birds for viewing. Getting on
or along the rivers will also provide you chances to spot
unusual birds, including eagles.
Visitors to New Ulm are encouraged to join in the
Christmas fun by participating in the Annual Christmas
Bird Count held in the middle of December. Results are
given to the Audubon Society for recording.

NU Country Club
The New Ulm Country Club is a picturesque 18-hole, par 71, semi-private
course surrounded by Flandrau State
Park and perched atop the bluffs of the
Cottonwood River. A distinctive feature
of the course is the many mature oak
trees that border the fairways. The
Country Club was established in 1929 as
a nine-hole course and expanded to 18
holes in 1966. The front nine saw a
remodeling effort in 2001 with the addition of hazards, tree boxes and sandtraps to add an overall depth to the
course. N.U.C.C. hosts several tournaments throughtout the year. Call for
more information on those.
The newily remodeled clubhouse is
complete with bar and restaurant service in the Cottonwood Grill. The grill
offers a casual dining for both golfers
and non golfers. Our menu is loaded
with choices and offers great variety.
The banquet facility hosts all size and
type of functions with a seating capacity of 380. There are also several private
meeting spaces for smaller groups. The
banquet facility and the Cottonwood
Grill are open year around. Our golf

In the mid-1800s, the banks of the river near Riverside Park welcomed steamboats carrying people and supplies. Today it is home to the Regional River History and Information

the region. A new “pirate ship” playground keeps the kids well entertained.

Martin Luther College (MLC), at 1995 Luther Court, overlooks New Ulm
directly across from Hermann Heights. Its landmark structure, Old Main, was
built in 1884. We invite you to come and visit our campus and enjoy the
many activities connected with collegiate life. Take in one of the five
annual dramatic productions, including our Classic Outdoor Play held in
New Ulm’s beautiful German Park. If you love music, we offer numerous vocal and instrumental concerts throughout the year that highlight
the work of four choirs, as well as our Wind Symphony, and handbell
choir. We run a Division 3 NCAA athletic program, so there are always
sporting events to attend. Whether it be at our scenic football bowl,
soccer complex, softball field, or gymnasium you are welcome to join
the action. The MLC campus hosts many community organizations
throughout the year. New Ulm’s Tennis Association, Soccer Association,
Community Concert, Rotary, and American Legion are several groups
who regularly make use of the college’s courts, buildings, and athletic
fields. We at MLC are proud to be a part of the New Ulm community.
We look forward to welcoming you to our campus.
