The New Ulm Mayor’sWelcome:
Welcome to New Ulm
It is a pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you as you enjoy our City of Charm and
Tradition. We are sure you will find an exciting activity or celebration regardless of the time of
year you visit, our Glockenspiel and Hermann Monument are welcoming sights at any time.
We banish winter with Bock Fest, an outdoor festival at Schell Brewery, and Fasching at
Turner Hall. Both are held the Saturday before Ash Wednesday. This is followed by our St.
Patrick’s Day Parade, a long standing tradition in this German community. With Maifest, in
early May, we celebrate the rights of spring with a large variety of activities including
‘Shakespeare in the Park.’
July brings Bavarian Blast, our summer festival celebrating our German heritage with food,
beverage and music. Oktoberfest starts with our German/American Day Parade, and the festivities continue for both weekends. November is started with the great ‘Shopping Opener’ and ends with the Parade of Lights the day
after Thanksgiving. In December, St. Nick and his helper, Krumpus, visit children of all ages for St. Nicholas Day.
After your first visit we look forward to welcoming you back many times. Each visit will provide a new and enjoyable experience
you will want to share with your friends.
Sincerely,
JOEL T. ALBRECHT

History of New Ulm
New Ulm, the City of “Charm and Tradition,” is nestled just 90 miles southwest of the Twin Cities, in the
heart of the scenic Minnesota River Valley. The idea for
the City of New Ulm, a settlement of German immigrants, was conceived by Frederick Beinhorn in
Germany. Beinhorn came to America in 1852. By 1853,
he was in Chicago where he and a group of other
German immigrants formed the “Chicago Land Society.”
In 1854, the site of the present New Ulm was selected by
the advance group. The name, New Ulm, was selected
because many of the original settlers were from the
Province of Wurttemberg, Germany, of which Ulm is the
principal city.
In 1856, Wilhelm Pfaender arrived in New Ulm with
members of the Turner Colonization Society of
Cincinnati. The two groups merged, and in 1857, the
town of New Ulm was incorporated by an act of the
Legislature.
The City of New Ulm was important in Minnesota’s
history. The first steamboats passed by New Ulm in
1853, going upriver with troops to lay out the site for Fort
Ridgely. For the next 20 years, boats brought settlers,
freight, Indian supplies and gold to the area.
The Indians mingled freely with New Ulm settlers in
those days. Much trading was done between the Indians
and the settlers of New Ulm.
New Ulm was nearly overrun in the Dakota Conflict
of 1862. New Ulm survived two separate sieges in
August of 1862. A few buildings, which still stand along
Minnesota Street, served as a refuge for residents and
nearby settlers.
In 1870, New Ulm survived another disaster, an infestation of grasshoppers. The grasshoppers brought the
people to the point of starvation. In 1881, a cyclone also
caused great devastation to the City of New Ulm.
With the election of New Ulm’s John Lind as the
14th governor of Minnesota in 1899 came significant
cultural, social and political influence. The town grew in
education, sports, entertainment and music.
Wanda Gag, an internationally recognized artist and
author of children’s books (e.g., Millions of Cats) was
born in New Ulm on March 11, 1893.
The German heritage of New Ulm is evident in the
architecture, and especially in the neatness and care
given to trim yards and well-kept houses and store fronts.
New Ulm, when laid out by the German Land Society’s
plans, was given a precise layout of streets and parks
which provide a variety of recreational opportunities.
New Ulm is a progressive town, with agriculture,
industries, retail stores, parochial and public schools
(including a private college), and a population of nearly
14,000 people.

To celebrate New Ulm’s 150th
Anniversary in 2004, this tree was
“planted” downtown, at the corner of

These are typical decorations seen in
many towns within Germany and serve
to tell the local history in an amusing
and public manner.
As you visit downtown New Ulm,
take the time to visit this new attraction. A plaque on the south side of the
pole explains the fascinating significance of each of the symbols used on

Founded in 1860,
the August Schell
Brewing Company
has emerged as the
second-oldest family-owned brewery
in
the
United
States. This handsome brewery has
gained national and
international
recognition for its
old-world craftsmanship and pride in
producing some of
the finest beers in
the world. It is
here, at this location, that August
Schell rolled out
his first barrel of
beer over 148 years
ago, and that Ted
Marti, 5th generation descendant of August Schell, continues that tradition of quality brewing today.
In 2002, Schell’s also acquired the Grain Belt label. They have been brewing this great product on this location ever since, preserving another one of
Minnesota’s legends. This acquisition made August Schell the largest brewer
in the state of Minnesota.
Visit the grounds and stroll the beautiful gardens. Glimpse Schell’s past
in its Museum of Brewing and browse the Gift Shop. Enjoy a brewery tour
and sample some of America’s finest beers. The Visitor’s Center includes a
Tap Room, designed with arched ceilings reminiscent of German
Rathskellers, with a wonderful old-world feel. Also available is a new parking lot for easier access to the brewery grounds.
Celebrate Bock Fest at the Brewery each spring, as winter is chased away
with an all-outdoors event. Held each year on the Saturday before Ash
Wednesday, the outdoor activities are a great cure for winter’s cabin fever.

Century Farms. The second floor houses the “Ulm Room,” a gift from our
Sister City, Ulm, Germany; and in 2008, “Key Ingredients,” a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian, and a Brown County Artists exhibit will also open on
this floor. The third-floor exhibit depicts the history of the Dakota War of
1862. These exhibits, along with the BCHS research library’s extensive family
and historic files, help attract more than 9,000 visitors a year.
The gift shop focuses on books about the history of the area and fun things

When viewing the front of the statue,
Hafner’s creation portrays the family, first and
foremost.
When you view the statue from the back, you see a man and woman who appear
to be dancing. Hafner skillfully did this to show that these immigrants brought with
them their love of music and other traditions that played such a big part in their culture.
In the middle of the granite pedestal are engraved texts and maps telling the story
of the immigration. Surrounding the monument at its base are four granite markers
containing over 350 of the immigrants’ family surnames.
For more information on these names, the story of the immigration, and the immigrants’ homeland, visit the GermanBohemian Heritage Society Research Center. It is located in New Ulm at 1200 South Broadway, lower level, rear entrance.

Italy.
Turner Hall also boasts a social club with over 500 members. Turner members have the use of the gymnasium, sauna, the dining room, bar, and club room and enjoy a generous discount on food and drinks. Delicious

German Park
Nestled below the hill between
2nd North and 3rd North on
German Street, this beautiful city
park is host to a multitude of public and private events.
During the summer, a series of
free music concerts are performed
in the park primarily on Monday
and Wednesday evenings, but
occasionally other days of the
week as well. Music styles vary
from old-time, rock and roll,
municipal band and bluegrass.
“Picnics in the Park” are offered on
Fridays from 11:30-1 during the
summer. Different food vendors offer inexpensive
meals to park visitors.
The park has a large, open-air picnic pavilion
and cast angel water fountain surrounded by a formal flower garden and pergola, creating the perfect
setting for outdoor weddings, receptions and social
gatherings. The columns that support the pergola
have inscriptions, as do the large paver stones in
front of the pergola. They commemorate some of

Wanda Hazel Gág, author of the
classic children’s book, Millions of
Cats, was born March 11, 1893, to
artist and photographer Anton Gág
and his wife, Lissi, in New Ulm. She
was the eldest of seven children.
Built in 1894, the house where
Wanda lived until age 20 is listed on
the National Register of Historic
Places. The family grew up in this
unique home with skylights, an attic
artist’s studio, and open turrets. The
Wanda Gág House Association owns
the property, which has undergone
extensive restoration to its early
1900s period.
Following the death of her parents, Wanda struggled to provide for
her five sisters and one brother while
pursuing her dream of becoming an
artist. Scholarships enabled her to
attend art schools. Wanda moved to
New York City and later to New Jersey, where she wrote and illustrated children’s books
and created lithographs and paintings which won her international renown. She died in
1946.
Her children’s books are available for sale in the on-site gift shop.

The Way of the Cross renovation, started in the late 1980’s with the help of the Knights of Columbus and the Way of

The project has included the restoration of the grotto, cleaning and tuckpointing of the structures of each station, renovating the statues, locating and installing stained glass windows, and decorating the chapel. The renovation project has attempted to be faithful to every detail in preserving the historical nature of

Battery
The New Ulm Battery is a civilian
artillery unit of Civil War vintage -- believed
to be the only one of its kind in the United
States. It was formed as a defensive measure
in January, 1863, six months after the
Dakota attacks in the area, to protect New
Ulm from any further attacks. The city was
not attacked again, and the group has yet to
fire a shot in anger.
The unit’s 42 members dress in uniforms
of Civil War vintage. Their equipment consists of three Civil War cannons, a howitzer,
three caissons (the vehicles that carry the
ammunition) and several sabers. The cannons are used for firing salutes and when the
unit goes on special maneuvers. The mobile
equipment is all horsedrawn. Eight teams
(16 horses) carry the officers. The enlisted
men ride on the seats of the equipment. No
one walks.
In 1914 the unit was turned over to the city, which has maintained it as a living bit of history ever since. The pageantry
of its firing drill is an exciting sight to see. The Battery performs on Memorial Day and July Fourth and is always the highlight of any parade. You can walk by and see Battery items at 1st North & Broadway. The New Ulm Battery accepts local
and out-of-town engagements. For more information contact John W. Fritsche, 354-4387, or New Ulm Battery, P.O. Box

Kiesling House
The historic Kiesling House is one of
the oldest buildings in New Ulm.
Located within the barricades during the
“Dakota Conflict of 1862,” it was filled
with straw, ready to be burned if taken by
the attackers. Today, it is one of seven
structures left in New Ulm from before
1862 and lets one ponder what life was
like 150 years ago. (Not open for touring,
only viewing from the outside. A historic
marker on the front yard gives more
details.)
Today it is home to C.A.N.U.

who offers occasional art shows by local

Brown County Veterans Memorial
The Brown County Veterans Memorial was dedicated on Veterans Day, 1999. This memorial, designed by C. J.
Schmidtke, received recognition in a national trade magazine for its unique features. The project was initiated and
developed by the Brown County Veterans Council.
This memorial was presented to Brown County as a lasting tribute to past, present, and future veterans who honorably served in the Armed Services of the United States of America during periods of peacetime and designated
periods of armed conflict.
The Eternal Flame, funded by a grant from the New Ulm Area Foundation, was installed in 2001 to draw attention to the memorial in recognition of those men and women who served to preserve freedom in the free nations of
the world.
There are currently about 2,000 commemorative paver blocks placed at the memorial site, with an expanded area
that will accommodate an additional 1,000 paver blocks. Contact the Brown County Veterans Service Office for
information on purchasing a paver block at (507) 233-6636.

It was after this conflict that
Michael Lauterbach transferred
two lots to Bishop Thomas L. Grace of St. Paul, for the site of
the new church. In April of that year, the first load of bricks
was delivered on the site of the present middle school building
for the New Ulm Area Catholic Schools. The cornerstone for
the new church was laid on Sept. 1, 1866.
In December 1868, Father Alexander Berghold was
assigned as the first Catholic pastor to New Ulm. He saw the
completion of a 36’ by 97’ church topped by a steeple. The new
church was dedicated by Bishop Grace on Sept. 11, 1870.
Eleven years later on July 15, 1881, a tornado destroyed the
church. By September 1888, money had been raised for the
present church building. The cornerstone was laid on May 4,
1890, the steeple was added in 1893, and the interior decorations were completed in 1903.
The walls of the Cathedral contain numerous paintings of saints and religious scenes from the life of Jesus and the saints.
In the sanctuary there is a painting of the Trinity and the 12 apostles. The original artist commissioned to decorate the
church was Alexander Schwendinger who was assisted by Christ Heller and Anton Gag, the father of Wanda Gag, famous
New Ulm children’s author and artist.
On Nov. 18, 1957, it was announced that the Church of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm was to be the new Cathedral for
the diocese that had been created by Pope Pius XII in southern Minnesota. Bishop Alphonse J. Schladweiler was ordained
the first bishop of the New Ulm Diocese in this Cathedral on Jan. 30, 1958, followed by Bishop Raymond A. Lucker in
1976, and Bishop John C. Nienstedt, in 2001.
On May 4, 1997, the newly renovated lower level was blessed and dedicated as Leifeld Hall, in honor of deceased
Monsignor Antony Leifeld, former pastor. Also in 1997, an Angel Garden, located between the church and parish offices,
was dedicated to the memory of children from the parish who have died.

Dining out in New Ulm is a
pleasure complicated only by
one question—which of the
many fine restaurants to
choose?
New Ulm has several fine
dining restaurants that offer a
variety of German specialties as
well as all-American favorites.
Barbequed ribs, German
potato salad, sauerkraut, and
home-made sausage are some of
the German dishes you will find
at several of our restaurants.
If you are interested in different cuisine, New Ulm has two
Chinese restaurants, several
pizza places, four Mexican food stops and, of course, many family restaurants that offer
American and international favorites.

Recreational Trail
New Ulm can now boast its own
contribution
to
Minnesota’s
renowned, paved recreational-trail
system. Minnesota has more miles of
paved trails than any other state, and
with the completion of PHASE ONE
in 2004 and phase three in 2007
(North Highland Ave), New Ulm
now offers a total of 6 1/2 miles. Phase
one offers five miles of outstanding
scenic ride through America’s
Heartland! The New Ulm Trail is
excellent for biking, walking, in-line
skating, or an invigorating run. Its
path follows the railroad bed, meandering through town along the beautiful Minnesota River Valley. This trail offers secluded natural habitat in the middle of the City. Don’t be surprised if you see deer, rabbits and a variety of birds. It is reminiscent of an old-fashioned train ride with a glimpse into the great rural American backyard. The New
Ulm Trail affords yet another recreational opportunity, along with gorgeous views, for visitors to enjoy
in the Southern Minnesota Region.

The New Ulm Country Club

Flandrau State Park and perched atop the bluffs of the Cottonwood
River.
New Ulm Country Club was established in 1929 as a nine-hole golf
course. The course expanded to 18 holes in 1966. In the spring of 2001,
the front nine was remodeled, adding two hazards, new tee boxes, sandtraps and mounds that add to the overall depth of the front nine. The
changes have added to the beauty and difficulty of the course.
The clubhouse is complete with bar service and dining room, meeting rooms, locker rooms, and a complete pro shop. Green fees are
available for guests of members and visitors to New Ulm.
Come and enjoy the New Ulm Country Club. Visitors are always welcome.

Recreation & Leisure
Hunting
This city, located in a valley between two rivers, is a mecca for
hunters: small game, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, pheasants, ducks
and geese, to name a few. Deer hunting also has a very pleasurable
and successful season around New Ulm.
For a rewarding hunting experience, try River Ridge Gun Club,
a private reserve with over 1,000 acres to provide 14 different
hunting areas. For more information, call (507) 359-5770.
Fishing
New Ulm has good fishing in nearby Clear Lake and
Lake Hanska. Cooperative efforts by local conservation
groups, Brown County and the Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources have brought these two lakes back to be
successful fishing lakes.
One of Minnesota’s most diverse fishing possibilities is
the Minnesota River. Within 10 miles on either side of New
Ulm, the Minnesota River produces large numbers of catfish
and trophy walleye.
The Cottonwood River also flows through New Ulm.
This river has small-mouth bass, along with a good number
of northerns.
Cross-Country Skiing
Flandrau State Park, located within the city limits, has
miles of groomed cross country ski trails. Ski and boot rentals
available.
Ice Skating
In addition to our indoor rinks at the Civic Center,
Harman Park has two lighted hockey rinks and one lighted
open-skate rink with warming house with restrooms. Call
the Park and Recreation office (507)359-8344 for more
information.
Bicycling
New Ulm offers several opportunities for bicyclists. We have the Bike/Walking Trail for the
more leisurely adventure, and we have the BMX
track. Both are open to the public.
Bird Watching
Bird watchers will love the many opportunities
for birding in and around New Ulm! We are fortunate to have Flandrau State Park on the southern boundary of the city, and they have recorded
up to 158 different species within the park!
Fifteen miles east is Swan Lake, which is a
wildlife preserve with many varieties of birds for
viewing.
Canoeing, boating or hiking along the
Minnesota and Cottonwood Rivers will also offer
many species in an undisturbed setting. An office
copy of the Audubon Society’s 50-page booklet,
“The Minnesota River Valley Birding Trail,” is available at the New Ulm Visitor Center, or call (651-739-9332)
for your personal copy. Finally, the Southern Headquarters of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is
located in New Ulm, and they can supply you with more specifics by calling 507-359-6000.

New Ulm’s Ambassadors
Meet the Gnomes
Heinzelmännchen Family
The Heinzelmännchen family and Gertie
Goose have become a featured attraction at New
Ulm festivals over the years. Although some people are led to believe these “German” garden
gnomes originated in Germany, their origin is
actually in Turkey. They first appeared as stone
representations in the 1300’s symbolizing slaves
working in mines. In the 14th century they were
brought to Italy and from there to Germany in
1420, where they developed into the gnomes as we
know them today.
The Heinzelmännchen family includes Hans,
his wife Carolla, their son Johann and daughter
Angelika. These gnomes, along with Gertie Goose and the Morel Mushrooms, turn up at most festivals and
gatherings. Be sure to be on the lookout for them.
Meet the Narren
The Narren of New Ulm are eager to greet each and
every visitor! They love to dance, “smile” for photos and
entertain children of all ages. Look for Hattie the Prairie
Wanderer or Tanta Anna in her lovely green dress.
There’s Pinella the Flower Lady, Tillie the Feder Frau,
Fritz the Sausage Man, Juergen the Pickleman, Rosa the
Baker, Schlaukopf the Hex, Louis the Fur Trader,
Katrinia the Wasserdame, the brothers Otto and
Gunther, the Royal Baron and Baroness, Krauselein the
Chef, Sepp the nonmusical Musician, Gusty the
Festival Wind, Sophia the Seamstress, Schatzie the
Bookkeeper, Poppy Ping the popcorn lady, Happy,
Heilligie Kuh and Elsie.
The Narren (masked) characters have been appearing at New Ulm and other festivals since 1989. With their hand-carved wooden masks and colorful costumes,
they can be found mingling with the crowd or leading a snake dance. They invite the children to hear their
stories, learn their dances and meet each Narren. Each Narren has his or her own unique personality and story,
and is often looked upon as “the relative everybody has but nobody wants to claim.”
For more information, contact the Chamber of Commerce, P 0 Box 384, New Ulm, MN 56073

The Concord Singers
“Festive German Music”
The Concord Singers were founded in 1931 and have been
dubbed New Ulm’s “Ambassadors of Good Will.” The singers
began as a group of men united in the love of song and today
are at the forefront of promotions to establish New Ulm as a
tourism destination.
They have performed in Germany, Austria, France,
Switzerland, Belgium, Great Britain, and extensively in
America.
The Concord Singers have appeared numerous times on
radio and television and have recorded eight all-German albums, cassettes and CD’s.
With their extensive repertoire of “Festive German Music,” the Concord Singers are asked to perform
many times each year and often appear for visiting tour groups viewing New Ulm’s famous Glockenspiel.

Discover Christmas in New Ulm
Christmas Traditions
Santa’s Parade of Lights
Many of America’s wonderful Christmas traditions
began in Germany. Christmas trees, Advent wreaths,
nutcrackers, and many other traditions can be discovered in many of our attractions, homes and
shops. Natural decorations are a city tradition in
New Ulm since 1925. The downtown business district is completely draped with natural evergreen
boughs and lights. Christmas trees adorned with red
bows line the sidewalk.
Driving through the residential areas of New
Ulm is like driving through a Christmas fantasy
land. Millions of tiny lights decorate the homes
sharing the Christmas spirit city-wide. Surrounding
the Glockenspiel clock and park are tiny white
lights giving the park a magical look.
The Christmas Parade of Lights heralds the official arrival of Santa Claus to New Ulm. Over 40
units in the parade are covered with twinkling
Christmas lights. This magical event takes place the
Friday evening after Thanksgiving at 6 p.m. in
downtown New Ulm. Children of all ages will
delight in this parade. Don’t miss this unique
entrance by Santa on November 28, 2008.

St. Nicholas Day
Children are invited to gather in New Ulm, to
welcome the arrival of St. Nicholas. Dressed in traditional costumes, St. Nicholas and his sidekick
Krumpus describe the German and Austrian legends
of St. Nicholas and how they tie into our earliest celebrations of Christmas. Entertainment, prizes and
treats round out the fun-filled gathering. Held in
early December.
Special Events

created to celebrate and reinforce New Ulm’s relationship with the Minnesota River. Activities
include a large music stage with many great bands
of all kinds, fishing, food and drink sales, exhibits,

FASCHING TAKES OVER
THE CITY OF NEW ULM
The Narren of New Ulm will take over the City on Friday,
February 1, 2008. Shouting and asking the Mayor to come out
of City Hall, if he does not heed their request, the Narren will
proceed to his office to capture him. He will then be dressed in
Fasching clothes, tied up, and a Proclamation read to the people of New Ulm proclaiming a holiday with the beginning of
Fasching. With bells ringing and music playing they will walk
to various businesses in the City, advising all to share in the fun
and festing, drinking and merrymaking of the Fasching season.
Fasching is an old carnival tradition that has remained alive
in Germany. It is typical to use elaborate, beautifully carved
wooden masks to add to the fun of the activities. It’s time for the people to celebrate, and by masking, people of all
backgrounds are able to mix and share in the fan. There are many different festivals and customs in the various
regions of Germany, but they all refer to the “tolle Tage” (crazy days) before Lent begins and the participants are all
considered Narren (fools).
For a unique experience, visit downtown to see the streets adorned with strips of cloth strung across the streets in
accordance with an old German peasant tradition.
Fasching, in New Ulm continues on Saturday, February 2, with musical entertainment at Turner Hall from 11
a.m. to 10 p.m. The Narren feel that it is important to keep the German tradition of Fasching alive, not only for the
adults, but the children as well. They perform at many local functions, encouraging participation by getting us into
their dance lines.
Come, join the Narren in the fun. It will be fun for ALL ages!

Education in New Ulm
MARTIN LUTHER COLLEGE
Martin Luther College (MLC), at 1995 Luther Court, overlooks New Ulm directly across
from Hermann Heights. Its landmark structure, Old Main, was built in 1884. The college
serves the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod by training men and women to serve as
early childhood teachers, elementary teachers, secondary teachers, and staff ministers. This
accredited college also prepares men for pastoral training at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary.
The faculty of MLC serves the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod in the areas of
theological and educational leadership while also maintaining an active presence in New
Ulm’s community projects and activities. MLC students can be seen throughout the area
in various positions of employment. They also serve their churches and the New Ulm community with volunteer service.
The MLC campus hosts many community organizations throughout the year. New Ulm’s
Tennis Association, Soccer Association, New Ulm Club, School District 88, MN State
High School League, Rotary, and American Legion are several groups that regularly make
use of the college’s courts, buildings, and athletic fields. Pioneer Catering, the food service
of the MLC campus, also welcomes the community to their cafeteria for delicious buffet
meals at a reasonable cost. In addition, MLC invites the community to campus events such
as five annual dramatic productions, lyceums, New Ulm Community Concerts, and several “Community Days” where admission is free to selected events. The president of Martin
Luther College is Rev. Mark Zarling. MLC’s website is www.mlc-wels.edu.

New Ulm: Preserving our History
In 2006, the City of New Ulm became a "Preserve America
Community," an honor awarded to us from the President’s
Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. Our beautiful and
historic community is one of only a few cities in Minnesota to
receive this designation! In addition, New Ulm’s downtown
has been granted status as a National Register Historic District
due to the buildings and history that have been preserved here.
Of special note are several buildings that survive from the 1862
Dakota Conflict, when the town was devastated as two pitched
battles were fought in the barricaded downtown between settlers and the Dakota Indians. The surviving buildings are the
Kiesling House at 220 N. Minnesota St. (current home of the
Council for the Arts in New Ulm), the Erd Building at 108 N.
Minnesota St. (one of few brick buildings that played a key
role in the defense of New Ulm) and the Frederick Forster
Building at 117 North Broadway (current home of Antiques
Plus), the oldest surviving commercial building in New Ulm.
We hope that you will take the time to stop at the New Ulm
Area Chamber of Commerce or the Brown County
Historical Society (our 1909 Post Office built in the German
Renaissance style) and pick up a walking tour brochure covering our historic commercial center and some of our beautifully kept and restored homes on German Street and South
Broadway.
