THE OPTIMIST CREED
Promise Yourself –
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,
and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

WELCOME
to New Ulm!
We are pleased that you are considering moving to
New Ulm, the “City of Charm and Tradition.” Whether it
is for personal or employment reasons, this publication is
designed to provide you with information that will make
your decision and ultimate move easier for you, your
family, or your business.
New Ulm, located just 90 miles southwest of the Twin
Cities, was settled by two groups of German immigrants
in 1854 and 1856, with intentions of starting a “utopian
German community in the American wilderness.” The
Federal Census of 2000 said that “New Ulm is the most
German city in America!” because of the predominately
German heritage. Today, this history is reflected in our
architecture, monuments, festivals, music, food, and
shopping. Our citizens enjoy an extensive park system,
clean neighborhoods, excellent school systems and a
strong sense of community pride.
One of our community’s most notable characters is the
Hermann the German monument which stands high on
Center Street overlooking the city. A bobble-head in his
honor graces some of our pictures and you can see him
experiencing our city at www.germanshavemorefun.com.

CITY GOVERNMENT
The City of New Ulm, incorporated
as a municipality in 1855, comprises
approximately ten and a half square
miles and is organized under a Home
Rule Charter in accordance with
Minnesota Statutes. New Ulm operates
under a Council-Manager form of local
government, whereby the City Council
has policy-making and legislative
authority; day-to-day administration
of government is the appointed City
Manager’s responsibility.
The City Council consists of a fivemember governing body and a Mayor.
The Mayor is not a voting member
of the City Council, but exercises
certain duties and responsibilities
under Home Rule Charter authority.
One City Council member is elected
at-large to act as President of the City
Council. The remaining councilors are
elected to represent the city’s four
wards. The City Manager is directly
responsible to the City Council
for supervision and management
of City operations, as well as the
implementation of City Council
governing decisions and policies.

Our forefathers’ original plat served our community well for about
130 years, providing a grid system of homes with alleys. Since
then, a number of areas have been developed to offer a mix of
housing options, and several private developments and a new
affordable housing acreage are currently in the building stage.

LUTHERAN SCHOOLS:
St. Paul’s Lutheran School is an
elementary school, grades K-8,
with pre-kindergarten program for
four- and five-year olds. It has been
operated by St. Paul’s Lutheran
Church since 1887. Enrollment is
open to the general public; Church
membership is not a requirement.
There are 280 students enrolled.
Teachers make every effort to meet
the three most important needs
of children: education for the soul,
mind and body. Children receive
instruction from God’s Word each
day, and high standards are set for
the secular subjects which prepare
children for life.
CHARTER SCHOOL:
Lafayette Charter School is a tuitionfree public charter school district
whose mission is to create a positive
learning environment for general
education, enhanced with agricultural
concepts and electronic technology.

South Central College in Mankato
is a Minnesota Community and
Technical College with a history of
academic excellence since 1946.
They provide comprehensive higher
education in a variety of academic
areas, and have a partnership with
the University of MN that allows you
to transfer your two-year credits
to a four-year program. They offer
several on-line degrees and promote
continuous learning for individual
growth and economic development.
CHILD CARE AND PRE-SCHOOLS:
The public and parochial school
systems all offer pre-kindergarten
programs open to the public.
Those with child-care needs will be

German imports, antiques, quilts,
gourmet coffees and foods, Christmas
items and much more. Watch for the
“occasional stores” that open once
or twice a month on weekends. This
new concept has proven to be very
popular and they carry a wide variety
of unusual goodies.
New Ulm is also blessed with a good
mix of retailers and services that
include fine furniture, hardware, food
stores, family clothing, restaurants
and enough to satisfy the needs of
our
people!

WORSHIP
New Ulm is home to a variety of denominations. The religious community
not only offers individuals and families spiritual support, but also many
and varied opportunities to serve others and the community at large.
Some of the City’s most beautiful and captivating architecture can be
seen in New Ulm’s houses of worship. Our religious community extends
a friendly hand of welcome to residents, visitors and newcomers.
