Danube-Lake Constance Route
This route leads from the world’s highest church
spire to the banks of Lake Constance, linking two
well-known and popular routes: the Danube and
the Lake Constance cycle trails. What’s more,
the Danube-Lake Constance Route is more than
just a connection – it has many attractions of its
own, quite apart from the beautiful scenery. It
begins in Ulm, on the southern edge of the Swabian Alb, continues on through the hilly countryside of Upper Swabia and ends among the fruit
plantations and hop fields in Kressbronn, on the
banks of Lake Constance. A certain amount of
muscle power is required, but there are lots of
opportunities for relaxing en route: a wealth of
lakes for bathing, health resorts and soothing
thermal spas – Jordanbad in Biberach or the
Waldsee-Therme, for example, are ideal. On the
other hand, the route presents opportunities for
longer breaks, as it takes cyclists through several
towns on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route
with their tourist attractions.
Upper Swabia-Allgäu Route
Everything that Upper Swabia and the Württemberg Allgäu region are famous for can be found
on this round trip. Beginning and ending in Ulm,
it takes you to Ochsenhausen, Wangen, Aulendorf and Bad Buchau. Culture fans will delight
in the many places of interest along the way. Enjoyable hours can be whiled away in the restau-
4
rants and inns serving Swabian cuisine, the little
cheese dairies in the Allgäu and the numerous
local, traditional breweries. During the tour you
can ease your aching muscles in the many spas.
The long tradition of Upper Swabia’s spas owes
its origins to a natural remedy – the peat mud
of the moorlands that you’ll encounter on your
trip. The cycle route leads through the middle
of the Wurzacher Ried and to the Federsee Ried
marshes. Those who also combine the Upper
Swabia-Allgäu Route with the Danube-Lake
Constance Route will find so many possibilities
that one cycle tour will definitely not suffice to
explore them all.

The first highlight of the journey can be seen
as soon as you leave the train – the world’s
highest church spire. 161.53 metres in height,
it belongs to Ulm’s Late Gothic minster 1,
built in two construction phases between
1377-1543 and 1844-1890. Those willing to
tackle the climb up the 768 steps of its tower
are rewarded by a magnificent panoramic view
over the countryside surrounding this twin
town, which is divided by the blue band of the
River Danube. We coast past the romantic Fishers’ and Tanners’ Quarters of Albert Einstein’s
birthplace and follow the European waterway
upstream. After fifteen relaxing kilometres,
the Danube-Lake Constance Cycle Route turns
southwards, winding gently uphill through

open fields. The first stop along the way is Laupheim, once the largest Jewish community in
the kingdom of Württemberg. The Museum of
Christian and Jewish History, located on three
floors of Großlaupheim Castle 2, documents
the coexistence of the two related religions.
From here the cycle route continues along side
roads, following the course of the narrow River
Riss, from which the penultimate ice age in the
Alpine region takes its name – the Riss Glacial
Stage. Along its banks the trail takes us via
Schemmerberg and Warthausen to complete
the first stage of our trip in Biberach. Passing
through the Ulmer Tor 3, a medieval city
gate dating back to 1365, we cruise into the
breathtaking heart of the former Imperial City,
which is the geographic hub of this idyllic area.

Biberach greets its guests with a splendid
marketplace that one never tires of looking
at. Dominating the marketplace by virtue of
its height and its position at the end of the
square is the Parish Church of St. Martin with
its magnificent, brightly-coloured ceiling
frescos painted by Johannes Zick. The town is
justifiably proud of its well-preserved town
centre with its numerous patrician houses
from several different centuries. A short detour
south of Biberach takes us to Jordanbad 4, a
health spa with thermal and leisure pools and
the fascinating ”Sinn-Welt“ – an exhibition that
lets you explore the senses. Ummendorf and
Fischbach are the first stations of this leg; from
here the first steep, uphill gradient takes you
to a height of 640 m. The climb is rewarded

the route continues through the community
of Eberhardzell and then zigzags through open
summer meadows and green woodlands. After
Haisterkirch we pick up speed and whiz down
to Bad Waldsee. Nestling idyllically between
two small lakes, the historical old town centre
exudes nostalgic charm with its inviting
squares, the town hall completed in 1426 and
the Heilig-Geist-Spital (Hospital of the Holy
Spirit). Now a Kneipp health resort, Bad Waldsee has been officially rated a therapeutic mud
spa since 1956. The hub of this health haven
is the Waldsee-Therme 5. The thermal water
contains fluoride and sulphur and is ideal for
reviving cyclists’ aching leg muscles.

Leaving the valley basin framed by high,

cycle route dips steeply with many bends into
the wild, romantic valley of the Wolfegger Ach,
where we find Wolfegg’s Museum of Rural

of 10 hectares, and its 15 original farmhouses
give fascinating insights into the daily lives
and living conditions of the rural population
throughout three centuries. The Automobile
Museum holds great appeal for car enthusiasts, with more than 200 classic vehicles on
display. Villages, flowering meadows and large
expanses of woodland line the road to Kißlegg,
picturesquely situated on the Zellersee lake. The
town’s impressive historical buildings include

the town’s landmarks is the imposing quadrangular complex of the Old Palace with its high,

This district capital is a fascinating example
of harmonious urban architecture. The origins
of the much-quoted saying ”In Wange bleibt

with its fountains, city towers and decorative
Baroque façades – it’s indeed almost impossible

On the western outskirts of Wangen we find
a countryside of pleasing meadowland. The
cycle trail dips into wooded valleys, then
climbs again up green hills. A wide bend takes
us through Haslach and Neukirch, located
between several nature reserves, where picturesque tarns nestle among rolling hills. Shortly
afterwards the road rises above the gentle
curves of the wildly romantic Argen, which has
carved its way deep into the landscape near
the hamlet of Summerau. In the village of Berg
the terrain begins to slope and we enjoy the
thrill of the sensational descent. Between the
townships, apples and cherries are ripening
on the trees, while the sheltered hillsides and
sunny sites are covered in miles of hop fields.

In between, delightful rows of grapevines
stretch down to the shores of Lake Constance,
thriving on the mild lakeside climate and the
sundrenched, south-facing location. After
all the different landscapes and the cultural
highlights of Upper Swabia, we now coast into
Kressbronn. Particularly worthy of note in this
holiday resort is the little castle with its museum. On display at the exhibition are historical
models of ships produced by Ivan Trtanj with
wonderful attention to detail. Finally we cross
the little park and go down to the lakeside.
The breathtaking panorama of Lake Constance
against the backdrop of the Alps stretching
beyond the opposite shore provides a fitting
end to a cycle tour of more than 150 km along

Ulm, a former Imperial City delightfully situated on the banks of the Danube, is the starting
point of this fascinating round trip on the
Upper Swabia-Allgäu Route. Long before Ulm
Minster 1 was even thought of, two medieval
trade corridors, the Danube-North and the
(Swabian) Alb routes, passed through the city.
The Late Gothic cathedral with its 161-metrehigh spire was completed at the end of the
19th century. After admiring the town hall with
its ornately painted façade, we mount our bikes
again and, after a few kilometres, leave the last
houses of the university city behind us. Like the
medieval merchants before us, we first follow
the course of the River Iller southwards. The
cycle route begins to climb, and a few kilometres further on we can see Laupheim. Groß-

laupheim Castle 2, the town’s nucleus, today
houses the cultural centre and the Museum of
Christian and Jewish History. After Laupheim,
the excellent cycle track climbs gently upwards
along the valley of the Rottum. On either side,
the dark green forests encroach on the river
plain, punctuated at intervals by large natural
orchards and tranquil villages such as Mietingen, Schönebürg or Reinstetten. Before long,
an elevated monastery complex can be seen,
heralding the end of the first stage of our trip:
Ochsenhausen.
Modelled on Jesuit designs, the former Benedictine Imperial Abbey 3 was built between
1615 and 1647 and elaborately decorated in
the style of Baroque in the early 18th century.
The famous Gabler organ, the monastery
museum, the astronomical observatory and the
magnificent library are veritable gems.

Behind Ochsenhausen the cycle route climbs
up the first hill of the day. Over the next few
hours our eyes rove over narrow country roads,
scattered villages and tracts of greenery. The
hills of the Altdorf Forest can be seen to the
west, with an altitude of up to 776 metres,
while to the south there tower the mighty
Allgäu Alps with their impressive peaks, ridges
and wild, romantic valleys. We cruise along
at a leisurely pace and then swoop down into
the basin of the Wurzacher Ried. We owe this
picture-book scenery to the huge, moving
sheets of ice that once covered the northern
part of the pre-Alpine region. Several times, the

ended some 10,000 years ago, vast glaciers buried the terrain under masses of ice and rubble,
sculpted the hills and excavated valleys and
lake basins. The wide expanses of moorland,
the colourful reed meadows and the countless
ditches of the 1,812-hectare nature reserve
provide a perfect habitat for some 800 varieties
of plants and around 1,500 species of animals.
In the nearby health resort of Bad Wurzach,
the Vitalium thermal spa 5 offers relaxation.
An important feature of the Upper Swabian
Baroque Route is the three-winged castle with
its opulently decorated staircase. In the town
centre of Leutkirch, today’s destination, one
also automatically becomes a time traveller in
its cobbled alleyways bordered by handsome
timbered buildings and patrician houses, of
which the Gothic House, completed in 1379, is
among the oldest in the region.

South of Leutkirch we pedal appreciatively
through the idyllic Allgäu region, just as it
appears in many photos: crystal-clear streams
burble through bright green meadows, which
here and there make room for a village or a
peaceful township. Isny nestles close to the
northernmost spurs of the Allgäu Alps and is
the first highlight of the day. Today’s climatic health resort looks back on almost one
thousand years of history, reflected in the old
townscape with its high walls, towers and
gateways. As we approach it, we immediately
notice St. Nikolai’s Church, which presents a
harmonious entity with the adjacent Church
of Sts. George and James and the buildings
of the former Benedictine monastery. The
following 25-kilometre stretch to Wangen is a

cyclist’s delight: the jagged Alpine peaks draw
nearer and seem almost close enough to touch.
A winding little road leads into Eglofs. The
harmonious village square is framed by stately
inns, the lovingly restored town hall and the
Baroque St. Martin’s Church. The Neo-Gothic
fountain is an eye-catcher. Wangen is the
heartbeat of the Württemberg Allgäu region.
Stone witnesses from more than five centuries are to be found all over the historic town,
which is watched over by the painted towers
that are typical of the region. In Wangen’s
heritage-protected town centre there’s a
famous weekly market, first documented in the
year 1286.

Following the course of the Obere Argen River
we cycle out again into hilly farmland. Beyond
Oberrussenried the scenery changes. The dark
strips of forest become punctuated with fruit
plantations. Between the charming villages it’s
mainly apples that are harvested here, which
thrive in the mild, lakeside climate on the sunkissed, south-facing slopes. Alongside, there
are pears, plums and sweet cherries as well as
hops, which in this region are cultivated on an
area of some 1,200 hectares. In this romantic
spot we find the town of Tettnang, from where
we get a glimpse of the dark blue, shimmering
surface of Lake Constance. The silhouette of
the New Palace 6, built between 1712 and
1720, is an imposing sight. Behind its old walls,

The precious masterpiece, created in the year

Aulendorf Castle 9. Since the first mention
of the castle complex around the beginning of

Our first stop is the former Premonstratensian

the splendid library, reflect the spirit of the

here we climb two hills and coast down to Bad

worth taking a walk through the town, with its

As the Ice Age Alpine glaciers gradually began
to retreat, Late Ice Age reindeer hunters advanced into the region around the Federsee lake.
In the peaty soil the well-preserved traces of
their ancient hunting camps, several moorland
settlements and pile dwellings have survived.
These priceless archeological finds form the
basis of the exhibition at the Federsee Museum.
A vivid impression of what life in those times
must have been like can be gained in the openair section of the museum, where a dozen
houses and huts are on display. On 27th June
2011 the UNESCO declared the pile dwellings
at the Federsee and other European findspots

the level cycle track around the conservation area, letting our eyes rove over the open
litter meadows. From Dentingen onwards the
terrain becomes a lot steeper as we head in the
direction of the 767-metre-high peak of the
Bussen >. Shortly before we reach the summit
of Upper Swabia’s ”sacred mountain“ the route
turns eastwards. The road bends, the panorama widens and the wheels begin to turn of
their own accord. After several idyllic downhill
kilometres we reach Oberstadion, where the
Nativity Crib Museum ? is well worth a visit.
Visitors embark on a journey through time,
tracing the life of Jesus as it is represented here
in the filigree figures, buildings and impressive
scenery, all produced with loving attention to
detail. On the final kilometres of today’s lap we
join the crowd of cyclists on the Danube trail
and coast down into Ehingen.

Ehingen’s history goes back to the year 961,
making it a worthy starting-point for the final
stage of our journey. In the centre of town
the present district courthouse dominates the
marketplace, which is also the site of the town
hall, built in 1713. Riding through the Untere
Stadt (Lower Town), one notices the towering
Hospital of the Holy Spirit. The striking timbered building is now home to the collections of
the municipal museum. Leaving this town of
beer brewers with its five traditional breweries,
we ascend the first of the hill ridges. Quiet,
gravel lanes take us to Oberdischingen, where
we enter Herrengasse. The road is lined on both
sides by unbroken rows of long buildings in
French Baroque Mansard style. Five kilometres
eastwards we come to Erbach. Even before we

reach the town, Erbach Castle, built in various
construction periods, catches our eye. Up and
down its many flights of stairs, visitors will
discover numerous salons, a restaurant and,
in the cellar, a theatre. Also worth a visit is the
adjacent St. Martin’s Parish Church from the
year 1767, its interior decorated with beautiful
frescos by the Swabian artist Franz Martin
Kuen. The terrain climbs several times during
the final stretch, giving us fine views from high
over the bends of the Danube. Before us there
appears the mighty bulk of Ulm Minster, now
only a few minutes’ pedalling away. After more
than 360 eventful kilometres, our cycle tour
along the Upper Swabia-Allgäu Route comes to
an end here in Ulm. It couldn’t have been more
varied.
