What’s more, the Danube-Lake Constance Route is more than just a connection – it has many attractions of its own, quite apart from the beautiful scenery. It begins in Ulm, on the southern edge of the Swabian Alb, continues on through the hilly countryside of Upper Swabia and ends among the fruit plantations and hop fields in Kressbronn, on the banks of Lake Constance. A certain amount of muscle power is required, but there are lots of opportunities for relaxing en route: a wealth of lakes for bathing, health resorts and soothing thermal spas – Jordanbad in Biberach or the Waldsee-Therme, for example, are ideal. On the other hand, the route presents opportunities for longer breaks, as it takes cyclists through several towns on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route with their tourist attractions. Upper Swabia-Allgäu Route Everything that Upper Swabia and the Württemberg Allgäu region are famous for can be found on this round trip. Beginning and ending in Ulm, it takes you to Ochsenhausen, Wangen, Aulendorf and Bad Buchau. Culture fans will delight in the many places of interest along the way. Enjoyable hours can be whiled away in the restau- 4 rants and inns serving Swabian cuisine, the little cheese dairies in the Allgäu and the numerous local, traditional breweries. During the tour you can ease your aching muscles in the many spas. The long tradition of Upper Swabia’s spas owes its origins to a natural remedy – the peat mud of the moorlands that you’ll encounter on your trip. The cycle route leads through the middle of the Wurzacher Ried and to the Federsee Ried marshes. Those who also combine the Upper Swabia-Allgäu Route with the Danube-Lake Constance Route will find so many possibilities that one cycle tour will definitely not suffice to explore them all. c B313 B312 Sc B32 Geislingen Burladingen äb hw Ho Trochtelfingen Ehingen Hayingen Gammertingen B27 E43 Dietenheim Bussen Riedlingen 7 se B16 l 1015 ach Gutn B312 B33 Mainau in Konstanz 13 Ro t Werta ch 96 B33 B32 Markdorf B30 Meersburg Sc hw ar z a c h Wangen Isny im Allgäu B31n Tettnang Friedrichshafen Kreuzlingen E sc Kempten ha ch B472 Marktoberdorf irnach B16 980 g Radolfzell ner h Sc ie Berg E532 B12 leg he R 13 Ravensburg u B31 B34 332 L202 zga ler E43,E54 Ade Singen Leutkirch z Lin B12 Kaufbeuren ün 98 B314 J15 7 Bad Wurzach B30 lt d W a B31n 96 Il E54 E41 B16 A Stockach Bad Wörishofen E54 r fe or d l B31 Buchloe E54 96 eG h ac Engen Aach B18 th h tlic Wes B313 Memmingen Wurzacher Ried tr Os B14 B491 81 Ro B312 Mind el B311n B32 Bad Schussenried Wa g e n h a r t Aulendorf Pfullendorf B300 K ck E Tuttlingen Die B311 Ochsenhausen Biberach Bad Buchau a.d. Those willing to tackle the climb up the 768 steps of its tower are rewarded by a magnificent panoramic view over the countryside surrounding this twin town, which is divided by the blue band of the River Danube. We coast past the romantic Fishers’ and Tanners’ Quarters of Albert Einstein’s birthplace and follow the European waterway upstream. The first stop along the way is Laupheim, once the largest Jewish community in the kingdom of Württemberg. The Museum of Christian and Jewish History, located on three floors of Großlaupheim Castle 2, documents the coexistence of the two related religions. From here the cycle route continues along side roads, following the course of the narrow River Riss, from which the penultimate ice age in the Alpine region takes its name – the Riss Glacial Stage. Along its banks the trail takes us via Schemmerberg and Warthausen to complete the first stage of our trip in Biberach. Passing through the Ulmer Tor 3, a medieval city gate dating back to 1365, we cruise into the breathtaking heart of the former Imperial City, which is the geographic hub of this idyllic area. Dominating the marketplace by virtue of its height and its position at the end of the square is the Parish Church of St. Martin with its magnificent, brightly-coloured ceiling frescos painted by Johannes Zick. The town is justifiably proud of its well-preserved town centre with its numerous patrician houses from several different centuries. A short detour south of Biberach takes us to Jordanbad 4, a health spa with thermal and leisure pools and the fascinating ”Sinn-Welt“ – an exhibition that lets you explore the senses. Nestling idyllically between two small lakes, the historical old town centre exudes nostalgic charm with its inviting squares, the town hall completed in 1426 and the Heilig-Geist-Spital (Hospital of the Holy Spirit). Now a Kneipp health resort, Bad Waldsee has been officially rated a therapeutic mud spa since 1956. The hub of this health haven is the Waldsee-Therme 5. The open-air museum occupies an area of 10 hectares, and its 15 original farmhouses give fascinating insights into the daily lives and living conditions of the rural population throughout three centuries. The Automobile Museum holds great appeal for car enthusiasts, with more than 200 classic vehicles on display. Long before Ulm Minster 1 was even thought of, two medieval trade corridors, the Danube-North and the (Swabian) Alb routes, passed through the city. The Late Gothic cathedral with its 161-metrehigh spire was completed at the end of the 19th century. After admiring the town hall with its ornately painted façade, we mount our bikes again and, after a few kilometres, leave the last houses of the university city behind us. Beyond Oberrussenried the scenery changes. The dark strips of forest become punctuated with fruit plantations. Between the charming villages it’s mainly apples that are harvested here, which thrive in the mild, lakeside climate on the sunkissed, south-facing slopes. Alongside, there are pears, plums and sweet cherries as well as hops, which in this region are cultivated on an area of some 1,200 hectares. In this romantic spot we find the town of Tettnang, from where we get a glimpse of the dark blue, shimmering surface of Lake Constance.
