Readers,
When we launched Magic Haiti back in 2011, we had as a goal to
change the image of the country. Since then we continue to showcase
the countless sites, waterfalls, beaches, eateries, artisans, musicians,
dancers, hotels, and so many others. And now four years later with
the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism and other stakeholders, who are
implicated in the sector, Haiti is becoming a veritable destination spot.
Many international travel agencies have now developedvacation packages to our beloved isle, and the influx of tourists and diaspora continues to grow. Many locals continue to tell us how they are discovering
places and sites that they did not know, and my response to them is
that we at Magic Haiti are so blessed. We continually wander throughout the country to unearth new treasures.
Our journey has just begun, and my wish is that all who live here and
those who set foot on our land opt to embark on remarkable expeditions that will delight your senses.
As you peruse the magazine this month and become acquainted with
our people and culture, you will learn of a family which has promoted
the country for years through visual arts. You will read about a metal
sculptor who is making a difference in the artistic village of Nouailles.
And one of our prominent chefs became a member of a prestigious
culinary association. You will alsodiscover why Haiti is home for a salon
owner from the Dominican Republic. And of course our magazine
would not be complete without showcasing a designer.
The goal of the magazine is to share many different aspects of our
culture so that you can delve into and experience the vibrancy of this
remarkable island. Take advantage, go snorkeling, hike in the mountains, leave your footprints, collect memories, and be sure to showcase
your travels as an ambassador.
Haiti has been recognized as an emerging destination of the Caribbean. Be the voice that acclaims Haiti so that others can come and Live

A new day dawns over our country in the field of tourism.
We just celebrated World Tourism Day (WTD), and this year, it
had a special tone in Haiti. During the months of September
and October, we met in a festive atmosphere with all the
tourism stakeholders. We organized a pleasant cocktail for
those operating in the public and private sector. Secondly,
we conducted a workshop on "Community Tourism:
Opportunities for Local Communities," bringing together
entrepreneurs, students and executives of the Ministry of
Tourism and Creative Industries (MTIC in French), in order
to propose appropriate elements to enable us to take a
new path.
Choosing community tourism, now we propose
projects that can impact local communities and encourage
their full participation. Community tourism is a new model
for the sector. This model is the evolution of a model of
tourism development based on the strength of communities
and their specialties. We wish, in this sense, to involve all
the nooks and crannies of the country in the future of
tourism, we strongly affirm that "zafè touris se zafè tout
moun" (tourism business is everybody’s business).
In parallel, we continue with the promotion of the
destination through the concept of "Roadshow" in the
United States. This November, we'll travel to the cities of
New Jersey, Philadelphia, Chicago, New Orleans, and
Savannah. We will meet our Haitian diaspora families living
in these cities. We will give them a taste of the destination
and invite them to visit via the available packages.
Soon, we will launch a tourism awareness campaign.
The campaign will aim to educate all social strata of the
significant impact of this sector. We will also encourage,
via the latter, entrepreneurship of small and medium
enterprises in various trades related to tourism. Tourism,
worldwide, is one of the most promising sectors of the
economy. It is high time that this reality is reflected in
our country.
Finally, we still savor once again the first days of October
the great recipes of our investments in the promotion of the
destination in recent years. Indeed, a dozen tourists from the
travel agency Travel Service and receptive tour DS Voyages
arrived in the second city. These tourists came from Punta
Cana in the Dominican Republic and visited during their stay
the Palais Sans-Souci and the Citadel in Cap-Haitien.
We cannot conclude without reporting the nomination
of the destination among the best Caribbean destinations by
USA TODAY’s specialized website in its travel section. Vote for
Haiti and come to Haiti for a memorable and unique time.

Chers lecteurs et lectrices,
Un jour nouveau se lève sur notre pays dans le domaine
du tourisme. Nous venons, en effet, de célébrer la Journée
Mondiale du Tourisme (JMT), et cette année, elle a eu un ton
tout particulier en Haïti. Nous avons, ces mois de septembre
et d'octobre 2015, réuni dans une ambiance festive tous les
maillons de la chaîne touristique d’Haïti. Dans un premier
temps, nous avons offert un cocktail convivial aux acteurs
évoluant dans le secteur tant public que privé. En un second,
nous avons réalisé un atelier sur le thème « tourisme communautaire : opportunités pour les communautés locales »,
réunissant entrepreneurs, étudiants et cadres du Ministère du
Tourisme et des Industries Créatives (MTIC), dans le but de proposer des éléments utiles devant nous permettre d’emprunter
une nouvelle voie.
Par ce choix du tourisme communautaire, dorénavant
nous propulsons des projets capables d’impacter les communautés locales et de susciter leur pleine participation. Le
tourisme communautaire se révèle un modèle nouveau pour
le secteur. Celui-ci s’explique par l’évolution d’un modèle de
développement touristique se basant sur la force des communautés ainsi que leurs spécialités. Nous désirons, en ce
sens, impliquer les coins et recoins du pays dans le devenir du
tourisme, nous affirmons fortement que « zafè touris se zafè
tout moun ».
Parallèlement, nous poursuivons la vente de la destination à travers le concept « roadshow » aux États-Unis
d’Amérique. En novembre prochain, nous jetterons le dévolu
sur les villes de New Jersey, Philadelphie, Chicago, New Orléans et Savannah. Nous rencontrerons nos familles haïtiennes
de la diaspora habitant ces villes. Nous leur donnerons vent de
notre envol comme destination touristique et les inviterons à
venir visiter le terroir à partir des forfaits disponibles.
Prochainement, nous lancerons une campagne de sensibilisation au tourisme. Cette campagne visera à sensibiliser
toutes les couches sociales sur l’incidence porteuse de ce
secteur. Nous voudrions encourager également, par celle-ci,
l’entreprenariat des petites et moyennes entreprises dans divers métiers liés au tourisme. Le tourisme, au niveau mondial, se
trouve être l’un des secteurs les plus porteurs de l’économie. Il
est grand temps que cette réalité se reflète dans notre pays.
Enfin, nous savourons encore une fois les premiers jours
d’octobre, les grandes recettes de nos investissements dans la
promotion de la destination de ces dernières années. En effet,
une quinzaine de touristes de l’agence de voyage Travel Service et du tour réceptif DS voyages sont arrivés dans la deuxième ville du pays. Ces touristes venant de Punta Cana de la
République Dominicaine ont visité au cours de leur séjour le
Palais Sans-Souci et la Citadelle.
Nous ne saurions terminer sans signaler la nomination
de la destination par le site spécialisé USA TODAY dans sa section voyage parmi les meilleures destinations de la Caraïbe.
Votez Haïti et venez en Haïti pour un moment mémorable et

E
very year at Artisanat
en Fête, Haiti’s rich cultural resources such as
stone, paper mache,
wood, horn, metal, clay, plastic,
sequins, among other things,
are transformed into fascinating
objects under the nimble fingers of Haitian artisans.

Thousands of people are
drawn to this annual event and
take part in all that it offers. Over
100 artisans from different departments of the country participated in this important cultural
event which brings awareness
to the creative geniuses of Haiti.
Many of the island’s most re-
nowned artisans, designers and
painters made an appearance
at this prestigious event. They
include designers Michaelle
Baussan, Marjorie Alexis, Sandra
Russo, and Miko Guillaume. This
year, many new artisans showed
off their works and gained a client base, and veteran artisans
came with their best works to
the pleasure of their loyal customers. All of them offered discounts on their products, many
of us began to cross off on our
Holiday shopping list.
The event also showcased local cuisine, classic
Haitian fares were sampled
from our riz national (rice and
beans) with griyo (fried pork)
or white rice served with a
side of lalo, a type of green
that is primary found in the
region of Gonaives. Dessert
lovers had peanut tablets,
rapadou, and locally made
liquors with ingredients such
as tamarind and coconut.
So mark your 2016 calendar . This weekend-long event
is a don’t miss activity. So be
sure to note that Artisanat en
Fête will be held around October and make sure to be here
so you can enjoy the depth and
breadth of Haitian culture.

rimilda Ramirez has
been living in Haiti for
the past 25 years. The
Dominican Republic
native remembers the exact
day she arrived in Haiti. “I arrived
in Haiti on October 17th, 1990.
Pétion-Ville was one of the first
parts of the country I visited.
The city was so beautiful and so
different from what I used to see
in the news. My first impression
of Haiti was very positive,” she
recalls. In Haiti, Grimilda found
love, a new family and home
along the way.
Grimilda Ramirez came to
Haiti to work as a hair stylist.
“I was contacted by a friend,
Mecho, who owned a beauty
salon. She wanted for me to
come and work for her. We
discussed it for a while, and I
decided to give it a try.” However, 1990 was not a good
time for a foreigner to move to
Haiti. Due to political turmoil,
Haiti was an unstable place
to live in. Grimilda panicked
and went back to the Dominican Republic at the end of
November. When the climate
eventually calmed down,
Mecho reached out to her
again. “You really have to come
give me a hand for the month
of December which is a very
busy period here”, said Mecho.
Grimilda accepted and was
back in Haiti to work for the
salon, but just for that one
month. She was supposed to
leave in January.
Instead, she met Gerard
Hyppolite… “I met someone
that I loved and who loved me.
The relationship kept getting
better and better. I could not
find one good reason to leave,”
she confesses. Grimilda married
Gerard a couple of years later
and she never expressed any
desire to leave Haiti again, not
even when they split up and
got divorced a couple of years
later.
According to Grimilda,
her experience in Haiti has
always been positive. “It seems
like my life here has been like
a staircase and it would not
stop going up and up.” Back
when she was living in the
Dominican Republic, Grimilda
wanted to attend law school.
Since she could not afford the
expenses, she decided to try
to find work in another field. “I
felt like I had to find something
that I would enjoy doing while
earning money.” She learned
a few skills that she ended up
not using. Then for no specific
reason, she started doing hair.
“My friends would come to me
asking me to do their hair all
the time. It escalated so quickly that I went back to school
and took classes to learn what
I needed to know in order to
become more skilled and to
be gainfully employed at a
salon,” she adds. Grimilda
worked for several salons in
the Dominican Republic before moving to Haiti where she
worked for two salons before
starting her own business.
“I did not have enough
money to launch the salon.
Since I’m not Haitian, getting
a loan from the bank seemed
complicated. I needed a cosigner. Some of my friends
offered to help me, but my
mother in law stepped up and
insisted on being the person
that would back me up. The process did not take long. I quickly
found a place in Pétion-Ville
and I was ready to start sooner
than I expected. Grimilda Salon
de Beauté opened its doors on
September 15th, 1999.” Her
clients became part of her big
family. “Some of them have
been with me since the beginning. They followed me
everywhere I went, and they
never stop providing me their
support. They love me, and
they love the way I take care of
them. It’s not only the products
you use, it’s all about customer
care”, says the lady that keeps
her salon thriving by always
making sure she pays attention
to her clients’ needs.
Surrounded by the Hyppolite family, Grimilda had
no adaptation problems. She
learned Kreyòl while working
for a Lebanese named Jacques
a few years after she moved
to Haiti. The Hyppolites speak
French, Kreyòl and English
fluently. Therefore, Gerard
wanted his Dominican wife to
learn French. He found her an
African teacher who taught
her the basics. Grimilda kept
practicing with her clients
who helped her get better and
better.
Grimilda
visits
the
Dominican Republic twice
a year. Her parents and
siblings come to Haiti as
often as they can. She also
makes sure she only eats
Dominican food in her house
and tries to keep in touch
with her culture. However,
she never regretted the
choice she made 25 years
ago. “I love Haiti. I have been
living here for so long that
I got used to everything. I
enjoy the mountains, the
beaches and the people. Yet,
the thing that really made
me stay here was the way
my ex-husband’s family
welcomed me. Ever since
they met me, they treated
me like family. I found a
second family here. They
made me feel Haitian,” she
says.

designers in Haiti who
are making uniquely
beautiful hand-crafted
bags. On a recent visit to A La
Bonne Bouteille Boutique in
Pétion-Ville, a colorful handbag made
from jute imme-

diately caught my
eye.
Intrigued
and with my
interest piqued,
I asked the store
owner about
the identity of the
designer.

She handed me a business
card, and I was led to
Sagine Zizi, currently at
the head of the company called Carib World
and the founder and
manager of Sazi
Creations.
Even before becoming
a designer, she was a firm
believer and consumer of
products made by local
Haitian designers, even
deciding not to use bags
from abroad but mainly
purchasing those
made in Haiti.
One day, she decided that
instead of buying bags, she
would design and make her
own. "As a child I would draw
my clothes and my mom
sewed them. I always wanted
to be a diplomat and fashion
designer at the same time.
I studied diplomacy, but
unfortunately I had to put
design on hold for a time.
Ultimately, I had to stay true
to myself. I love everything
that has to do with fashion,
crafts, painting etc. So I decided, why not give designing
a real shot?" she recounts with
so much determination.
She began attending
ENARTS, Haiti's art school, for
private painting classes and
started her
fashion
journey
by reproducing some of her
favorite bags before creating
her own unique models. She
then launched her own line,
Sazi Creations, in February
2015.
Since February 2015, Sagine
has been designing and producing handbags, wallets, clutches,
laptop bags, and bottle holders,
among others. She prides herself
in offering products for adults
and children, and some that are
unisex. Staying true to her vision
to highlight Haiti's rich wealth in
her products, she uses jute, cow
horn, and bone to add touches
of the country to each of her
creations. "Though these
materials are used by many of
our designers, I wanted to transform them and
add my own
unique
twist."

When viewing her
collections, one of the things
that stood out to me the
most was the assymmetrical shapes of her bag. Each
one is artfully crafted, and
will most likely warrant

a second look when
out on the town. Her
wallets and laptop
bags make great
gifts that come with
their own sliver of
Haiti.
New on the market, the
designer is thrilled with the
exposure that she has garnered
so far. Recently, she participated
in this 12th edition of CARIFESTA,
held for the first time in Haiti. "I
can honestly say that it was a
one-of-a-kind experience, and I
was immensely proud to have
been among the designers to
promote Haiti’s best."
For now, Sagine works
from home and hopes to
soon open up her own
shop. With her creative mind,
passion and drive, I definitely
foresee a Sazi Creations shop
on the horizon.

N
o visit to Haiti is complete
without a visit to Galerie
d’Art Nader, one of Haiti’s
most prestigious art galleries.
Nader’s collection is thought to be the
largest collection of Haitian art in the
world. Behind this amazing institution that
has been serving art lovers is Georges S.
Nader, a very dynamic man with an incredible passion for Haitian art. He contributed very much to the commercialization
of Haitian art by organizing exhibits in Haiti,
France, England, Japan, Venezuela, and

The museum was
destroyed during the
2010 earthquake. Of
the more than 17,000
paintings housed at
the museum, they
were able to save over
14,000 paintings and
2,000 damaged pieces.
600 of them were
restored
the US. In all his endeavors
which began about 50 years
ago, his ultimate goal is to
share his love of Haitian art
with all.
In the 1960’s, Haiti was
a touristic hub especially
attributable to the various cruise ships docking at
the port. In 1966, Georges
S. opened the first Galerie
Nader in Port au Prince after
dealing art on a small scale.
At the time Haitian paintings
were in demand, due to their
vivid colors and naïf style.
Through the Galerie, he was
a pioneer in exporting art

and a big promoter of Haitian
art through publications and
exhibitions.
Georges S. also opened
a museum with his personal collection. The museum
was destroyed during the
2010 earthquake. Of the
more than 17,000 paintings
housed at the museum, they
were able to save over 14,000
paintings and 2,000 damaged pieces. 600 of them
were restored, as a result of
a restoration project by the
Smithsonian Institution as
well as the Naders efforts.
Originally located at Croixdes-Prés in Pacot, the gallery
and museum were moved to
Pétion-Ville after the earthquake.
Obviously his love for
Haiti and its culture was
passed down to his son,

Georges Nader, Jr. “I grew
up surrounded by a collection of 20,000 paintings,” he
reminisces. In 1980, after
completing his studies in New
York, Georges Jr. came back
to Haiti to follow in his father
s footsteps. In 1989 Galerie
Nader would get into the
business of artisanat and
opened “The Atelier Galerie
Nader. Through this workshop, he exported art to
Martinique, St. Martin and
other islands, and also in
France. This adventure lasted
until 1992.
At the Galerie, the choice
of painting is not a commercialized one. Instead,
customers are invited to
take the time and discover
the artists whose work range
from the naive and primitive which characterizes the
40s, the academic paintings
of the 70s, modern paintings, and contemporary art.
The walls of the galerie are
adorned with the works of
well-known Haitian painters, such as PhiloméObin,
Edouard Duval-Carriè, Tamara Baussan, Frankétienne,
Philippe Dodard, Michele
Manuel, Alix Roy, and Tiga.
If one is not sure which way
to go in terms of purchases,
Georges Jr. is happy to assist
the client in selecting the
right piece. After purchasing
your piece of artwork, he can
also help you to find the right
frame.
Heavily involved in the
promotion of all things Haitian,
Georges Jr. launched a project,
Haiti Cherie, in the city of
Jacmel. The renovated house
offers an array of some of the
best local items, including
artisanal works, coffee, rum,
and beer.
Georges Jr. tells me
that his dream is to open a
National Museum in Portau-Prince with the help of
all the collectors. This is to
commemorate his father’s
legacy and all of the work
that Galerie Nader did in promoting Haitian art in Haiti and
abroad.

f you’ve ever had the
pleasure of sitting down
and conversing with
Chef David, you’ll know
I’m not exaggerating when I
say he is laid back and very
approachable, much like the
dishes he creates. Yet at the
same time, both he and is
gourmet meals are unique.
As I listened to him, learned
more about him, it was a
great experience to have
the chance to hear the story
beyond the chef whose food I
absolutely enjoy savoring time
and again.
Chef David is unassuming and quiet; it is not
hard for me to picture a
16 MAGIC HAITI AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2015
young curious David in the
kitchen watching his mother
or grandmother in the kitchen
cook away. He shares that it’s
these two strong women who
sparked his interest in cooking,
and over the years the interest
grew and it became a passion.
He began getting his
hands dirty in the kitchen
at an early age and became
skilled at learning to cook
Haitian staples. I notice that
as he recounts these times
he does so with a huge smile,
and it’s apparent that not
only food but the memories
he associates with them are
mostly happy ones.
It is no surprise that he
pursued culinary studies at
Johnson and Wales University. After completing his
degree, David began working
as a chef for many notable
fine dining establishments
in the Florida area such as
Le Coq au Vin. He opened
Modern Caribbean Bistro,
an upscale bistro and jazz
bar in Hollywood, Florida.
He also worked as a chef on
luxury cruise ships and was the
Executive Chef for the Miami
Dade Fire Rescue Department. Chef David also owned
Chefs Creations Catering
which was located in Miami.
I was surprised to discover the extent to which

his passion propelled him.
He is one of the few young
Haitian American Chefs who
currently is a Certified Culinarian, Certified Executive Chef,
Certified Chef Educator, and
a Certified Private Chef. Most
recently he was Executive Chef
De Partie at the Primature
(Office of the Prime Minister)
in Haiti and he was also the
Executive Personal Chef of the
Former Prime Minister Laurent
Lamothe.
That is what brought him
to Haiti as a matter of fact,
he divulges, “The chance to
cook for the Prime Minister of Haiti, and the ability
to share my culinary skills
in my beloved Ayiti, was an
opportunity that I could not
pass.” It’s due to his tenure
as PM Lamothe’s Executive
Personal Chef that he was
asked to join the prestigious
Le Club des Chefs des Chefs.
He officially became a member of this select group in July
during an official ceremony in
Italy this past July. He is the
first black man to integrate
this exclusive society.
As I congratulate him for
the many accomplishments
he has achieved in such an
early stage of his career, I
observe that it makes him
uncomfortable and ask him
why, he replies “I do this
for no other reason, than
my passion to create good

food.” One can discern that
the spotlight is not his cup
of tea. Rather, he is most
in his element when composing delectable repasts.
Chef David’s desires to
elevate Haitian cuisine and
more importantly put Haitian gastronomy on the map
are his principal motivators.
He is about the bigger
picture, and has embarked
on endeavors to assure
that he leaves his footprint
in Haiti’s culinary world.
One of those endeavors is
creating and maintaining an
herb garden in Furcy which
he calls Edibleness Ayiti,
in the mountains above
Pétion-Ville. He is working
with local farmers to cultivate the garden. He strongly
believes in using fresh local
herbs and products in his
cuisine. He sells his herbs to
a loyal group of clients. He
makes a spicy herb packet
for garnishment, and he also
uses the herbs to produce
tasteful oils which can also
be purchased.

I
n the artisan village of
Nouailles in Croix des
Bouquets, hundreds of iron
sculptors work out of their
one-room workshops. The cling
sounds made as they bang
metals serve as the soundtrack
of the village. This image is
prevalent throughout all the
neighborhoods that comprise
the village of Nouailles. Jean
Eddy Remy’s workshop, however,
stands out. This iron artist’s workshop isn't just that, it also serves
as a meeting point for all the
inhabitants of the village. Jean
Eddy was able to turn tragedy
into opportunity, use his artistry
to provide for his community.
Jean Eddy was born into a
family of iron sculptors; his father
was an iron sculptor as well as all
the men in his neighborhood. He
started sculpting iron at the age
of 7 and by the age of 10, he was
already headlining exhibits along
side well-known iron sculptors.
He is not only a sculptor but he
has become a notable painter.
Inspired by nature and spirituality, it is evident that Jean Eddy
isn't simply just an artisan, he
is a creative artist. He takes hint
from his environment and his
socio-political environment as
well. And this environment has
awaken a sort of activism within
the artist; he doesn't just want

create art. He wants to
improve his surroundings. When asked what
sets him apart from
the other iron sculptors,
Jean Eddy answers that
his research has made
him reach another level
of artistry and he is right.
He stands out, as his distinctive talent has taken
him around the world,
from art fairs in Mississippi to
Cameroon.

won a prize from the Assemblée Parlementaire
de la Francophonies
(APF), (an association
of the parliaments of

workshops. Then the earthquake
of 2010 happened, Jean Eddy
appealed to the prize donors
to use his prize to create a community center in Nouailles. His
plan was approved. His atelier is
located within the community
center that houses an exhibit
area, a conference space and a
training area. At the time of the
interview, a group of youth were
conducting a first aid seminar.
The community center serves as
a reception area for visitors and
visiting artists. It has also been
used as a concert area where
popular artists such as Belo and
BIC have graced the stage. As
president of his local association,
Jean Eddy feels responsible for
the improvement of the lives of
the members of this community.
And he is not stopping there.
As we spoke to him, there were
constructions being made to
what one day will be a neighborhood school and training center.
For the immediate future,
Jean Eddy Remy will be focus-
ing on what he loves, which is
creating art. He will be working
on a three-dimensional project
inspired by various works he
has seen in Africa. The
community center will eventually be managed by the youth
of the neighborhood in order to
for him to be able to focus on
creating art. When he is not
serving as a community leader
or working on his craft, you can
find the altruist spending time
with his twin daughters and
listening to Jazz.
As I strolled throughout
Nouailles, it was apparent that
a lot of skilled artisans reside
in the village, but the most impressionable image was the
reverence with which old and
young addressed Jean Eddy. It is
so very clear that his artistry will
not be his only legacy.
