Summer is almost upon us. I wish you all a very restful and
relaxing season.
Now that is it June 1st, I want to remind you that our annual dues
will go up to $40.00 starting July 1, 2016, so if you renew your
membership it will still be $30.00 until June 30. As of July 1st,
application fees will be $25.00 as well for each NAA exhibit.
You must be a member in good standing to apply for the Annual
Awards Show at the Newton Free Library in September. There is
an application link in this newsletter. Remember too, that this is
one of our most popular exhibits so do not hesitate to send in your
application as soon as you possibly can.
In the fall we should have our new website online and ready to
go. We will notify all members when it is ready. All members will
need to register online. Instructions will come with the notification.
A year from now when you renew you membership you can do it
online and pay your dues. In addition, you will be able to register
for exhibitions and pay fees by credit card on the website. When
you first register there will be the option of creating your own artist
page with images, an artist statement, and contact information. I
hope that you will all take advantage of that.

MYTHAGRAPHS

June 2-29, 2016
Newton Free Library Gallery
330 Homer St., Newton MA 02459
Opening Reception:
Thursday, June 9
7:00-8:30 pm
Newton-based artist and art conservator Mark Sirdevan is exhibiting 15
paintings at the Newton Free Library, June 2-9, 2016. The paintings, most in
black and white, are abstract and symbolic depictions of humanity and
culture.
"Mythagraphs are large-scale acrylic paintings derived from sources both
primordial and contemporary," says Sirdevan.
"There is a metaphorical overlap in the practices of art making and art
conservation," he says. "They rejoin lost cultural history and deep personal
values through intimate contact with existing images and materials. My own
work takes me back through the history of image making to ancient sources
of creativity."

NAA'S HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
Congratulations !
NAA scholarship recipients were given awards on May 12, 2016
Three Newton Art Association Scholarship Awards, $300 each
Anjali Shankar The animal-human configurations Anjali uses suggest
metamorphosis as well as the animal nature of human beings. The piece
that depicted a woman holding a huge goldfish is particularly arresting.
From her statement: "I draw to capture and remember what I find to be
uniquely beautiful...the interplay within humans and with nature has hidden
beauty and issues that have deep value." Newton South HS, plans to study
fine arts and biology / natural sciences at Maryland Institute College of Art in
Baltimore.
Gloria Singleton-Kahn Gloria's work ranges from an engaging self
portrait in charcoal and conte crayon to a gripping collograph collage series
called Light, which offers six abstract works that are both individually and
collective vibrant. Her drypoint print, Dog Day, is a skillful rendering of
playful dogs in motion. Her work shows diversity in media, expression, and
intention. Newton North HS. Plans to study fine art at Guildford College in
North Carolina.

Adriella Vasquez Seeing Adriella's work, After Lucien, a rendition of a
Lucien Freud painting, is an intense experience and it underscores Adriella's
fascination with faces and the human body. Bold, blunt, and powerful
strokes in oil create an intense face that confronts the viewer. Her tools vary
but she leads with line drawing, often in pen, and loves oil painting its
"incredible luminousness and think consistency." Newton North HS. Plans to
study art teacher education and photography at the school of the Art
Institute of Chicago.
Myra Abelson First Place Award $800
Hadas Rosen In her personal statement, Hadas says that her "entire
portfolio was a big self portrait." And the eight pieces show diverse traits:
they reveal a range of emotions and imaginative approaches while
experimenting with colors, media, and techniques. The pencil portrait with
stacked caps and a puzzled face contrasts with the soft hues of the
lavender woman glimpsed on a subway. Together the artworks suggest
usual skill, creativity, and personal expression. Newton South High School.
Planning to attend Maryland Institute College of Art! and is interested in
studying painting and neuroscience. She was unable to join us tonight
because she is in Israel, where she was born, with her grandfather who is
accepting the Israeli Science award tonight.
Newton Art Association First Place Award, $800
Annalisa Flynn To quote Annalisa's statement: "The hidden stories
behind where and how food is made" is the subject matter of her artwork.
Her portfolio pieces show a consistent focus on this theme from Peeling
Back Pesticides, which shows a pencil-drawn hand peeling bright oranges,
to Corn, The Commodity, which shows the ubiquity of the product. Her work
blends her social and political focus with thoughtful, graphic depictions of
the products of the agricultural industry. Newton South High School. Plans
to study fine art and sustainable agriculture at the University of
Massachusetts.
