becoming the first specialist aquarist group in Victoria. Its main aims are:
1.To promote the keeping of cichlids;
2.To gain and disseminate knowledge of cichlids, their habits and attributes
through the use of slides, films, books, lectures, practical demonstrations,
local and overseas magazines, articles by members and discussions with fellow
members or experts in the field;
3.To assist, in any way possible, the establishment and/or maintenance of
approved public aquaria;
4.To be involved in the education of the general public with regard to the benefits
of fishkeeping (particularly cichlids), and the potentially harmful effects of
animal mismanagement;
5.To promote fellowship between members;
6.To further the conservation of species and their natural habitats;
7.To further the identification, distribution, breeding, maintenance and

I have found that removing
the eggs and hatching
them artificially can work
quite well. I use a siphon
on a stick to go into the
tank and remove the eggs.
After rinsing them off, they
are placed in rain water
with methylene blue and
heavy aeration. The eggs
hatch in two or three days
and the fry are removed
and placed in clean rain
water. In five days the fry
are free-swimming. Heavy
aeration seems important
to keep the fry circulating
in the jar and avoid clumping.
That brings us to the hardest part - getting the fry to
survive. The fry are very
thin, about the size of
Apistogramma fry, with
even smaller mouths. They
are constantly moving and
picking at everything,
seemingly trying to feed. I
have tried "Liquifry'" micro
powdered food, egg yolk,
etc but have only had limited success in getting the
fry to the brine shrimp
stage and beyond. It
appears that they are very
finicky eaters and that
water quality must be
extremely high. Even when
the fry begin eating brine
shrimp it is difficult to tell,
since they don't show the
typical orange belly. The
tendency is often to over-

feed and the pollution kills
them. To keep food in front
of them use a smaller container, heavy aeration and
change the water frequently. Without heavy aeration
the fry are less active and
do not survive as long.
Rain water or water drawn
from the parents' tank
seems to be best for the
fry. Water different in pH
and composition can be
gradually added in three to
four weeks but even then
fry should not be transferred to another tank
unless they have been
slowly acclimatised to the
new water. Most of the fry
perish just before or in the
early stages of eating
newly hatched brine
shrimp. At about 1.5 to two
months the fry become less
sensitive to water changes.
I have obtained about 150
fry so far but it is frustrating to have so low a percentage of survival.
In conclusion, Uaru amphi- 11
acanthoides is a graceful,
colorful, challenging and
interesting fish to keep and
breed. Due to its peaceful
nature, even beginners can
keep and enjoy this unusual fish. For those with some
experience in breeding fish
it can be a top-notch challenge that I would highly
recommend!

becoming the first specialist aquarist group in Victoria. Its main aims are:
1.To promote the keeping of cichlids;
2.To gain and disseminate knowledge of cichlids, their habits and attributes
through the use of slides, films, books, lectures, practical demonstrations,
local and overseas magazines, articles by members and discussions with fellow
members or experts in the field;
3.To assist, in any way possible, the establishment and/or maintenance of
approved public aquaria;
4.To be involved in the education of the general public with regard to the benefits
of fishkeeping (particularly cichlids), and the potentially harmful effects of
animal mismanagement;
5.To promote fellowship between members;
6.To further the conservation of species and their natural habitats;
7.To further the identification, distribution, breeding, maintenance and
enjoyment of species in the Family Cichlidae.
