SEPTEMBER 9 - 13, 2015!! ! ! ! ! ! 9 ! DOREEN WELSH Hudson River Crash SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 12:30PM - 1:45PM In the winter of 2010, Doreen Welsh was one of three flight attendants onboard US Air Flight 1549. One minute after takeoff from New York’s La Guardia Airport, both of the airliner’s engines ingested birds and lost power. The 58-year old veteran flight attendant heard the words she had trained for, but never expected to experience: “Brace for impact!” Ninety seconds later, the Airbus 320 bellied into the frozen Hudson River in what became known as “The Miracle on the Hudson”. While the front of the airliner was above water, the aft portion… where Doreen was… began filling with near freezing water. In the ensuing panic and mayhem, Doreen directed passengers forward to the wing exits. Unbeknownst to her due to the adrenaline rush, a 12 inch piece of angle iron had skewered her leg. With the water up to her chin, Doreen physically pushed her last passengers toward the wing exit. As she exited, she found the other two flight attendants on the wing dry and perfectly groomed. “It was as if there had been two entirely different accidents”, she says. CONVENTION GUIDE! |! Ninety Seconds To Impact! If you had only 90 seconds to focus the survival skills of those around you, what would you do? This is the question Doreen asks, it’s the question she answers, it’s the story she tells—it’s the story that has audiences in tears one minute and laughing out loud the next. Doreen takes participants on the emotional journey of that fateful day over New York. Doreen likes to say that had one person perished during that crash it would have been known as the US Airways Flight 1549 crash. Because of the heroic deeds of five crew members who had never met until that day–it was a miracle! SEPTEMBER 9 - 13, 2015!! ! ! ! ! ! 10 !
