PEO WILL HOST 10TH QUEEN’S PARK MPP RECEPTION EVENTS ATTENDED ONTARIO LEGISLATIVE INTERNS VISIT WITH PEO Ontario Legislature Internship Programme (OLIP) Interns for 2015-16 visited PEO on June 20 to learn about PEO, the work that it does and the current issues it is dealing with. Matt Banninga, Brittany Davis, Olivia Labonté, Sara O’Sullivan, Julia Redmond, Eric Zinn and Justyna Zegarmistrz participated. They were hosted by PEO Manager of Government Liaison Programs Jeannette Chau, P.Eng., at PEO headquarters. PEO Ontario Legislature Internship Programme (OLIP) Academic Director Dr. Peter Constantinou (front row, right) joined the 2015-2016 OLIP interns for their visit to PEO headquarters on June 20. With him are (back row, left to right) PEO has been a sponsor of the program for Government Relations Consultant Howard Brown, OLIP Interns Brittany Davis, Julia Redmond, Sara O’Sullivan, PEO Manager of Government Liaison Programs Jeannette Chau, P.Eng. Each intern has worked with a Parliamentary Assistant and an Opposition Critic in five-month shifts respectively. PEO talked about the Government Liaison Program (GLP) and the regulatory work of PEO. The interns shared informative thoughts on how regulators and other stakeholders like PEO can work better with the government and opposition. Also participating in the session were OLIP Academic Director Dr. Peter Constantinou, PEO summer engineering student Yourdanos Tsegay, PEO Government Relations Consultant Howard Brown and Brown & Cohen Account Executive Blake Keidan. Mr. Constantinou took over as Academic Director from Dr. Henry Jacek. Mr. Constantinou worked at Queen’s Park for more than a decade prior to becoming an academic and for the last 20 years has been the Practicum and Internship Coordinator in the Public Policy and Administration Programme at York University. 2 | PAGE PEO COUNCILLOR ATTENDS SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT IN OTTAWA PEO Eastern Regional Councillor Guy Boone, P.Eng., attended a special announcement on funding for the Ottawa Innovation Centre at Bayview Yards on June 15. Federal Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains, MP (Mississauga-Malton), announced that the Ottawa centre will receive $8 million from the federal government as it readies to open in the fall. Ontario Attorney General Yasir Naqvi, MPP (Ottawa-Centre) emceed the event. Also attending were Infrastructure Minister Bob Chiarelli MPP (Ottawa West-Nepean), Federal Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna, MP (Ottawa-Centre), PEO Eastern Regional Councillor Guy Boone, P.Eng., attended the special Ottawa Deputy Mayor Mark Taylor (Ward 7) announcement from Federal Innovation, Science, and Economic Development and University of Ottawa Engineering Dean Minister Navdeep Bains, MP (Mississauga-Malton), on June 15. Claude Laguë, P.Eng. “The goal is to give small- and medium-sized companies the support they need to bring their goods and services to market a lot faster,” said Minister Bains. Around 1,200 businesses will use the centre once it’s up and running, which will create around 280 jobs and generate tens of millions of dollars in investment. PEO GLP CHAPTER CHAIR MEETS NDP ENVIRONMENT CRITIC Peter Tabuns MPP (Toronto-Danforth), NDP Environment, Climate Change, and Energy Critic, hosted his annual event on June 16. PEO East Toronto Chapter GLP Chair Harneet Panesar, P.Eng., and Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) CEO Sandro Perruzza participated in the event. Mr. Panesar told the GLP Weekly he discussed a future meeting to discuss the importance of engineers in developing environmental policy, as well as other ongoing PEO issues. WORK IN PROGESS LONDON CHAPTER TO HOST TAKE YOUR MPP TO WORK DAY PEO London Chapter has invited Jeff Yurek, MPP (Elgin-MiddlesexLondon) PC Health and Long-Term Care Critic (left), to participate in a Take Your MPP to Work Day in St. Thomas on August 23. PEO London Chapter GLP Chair Tomiwa Olukiyesi, P.Eng., (right) is organizing the event. The group will take a plant tour of Presstran Industries in St. Thomas. This will be London Chapter’s third Take Your MPP to Work Day since the program started in 2013. Take Your MPP to Work Days allow MPPs to visit local engineering companies to learn more about PEO and the work professional engineers do in their communities. These events help increase an MPP’s understanding of engineering work and PEO’s regulatory role. They also develop a deeper relationships between the MPPs, local engineers and PEO chapters. TORONTO MPP TO BE GUEST SPEAKER AT PEO EAST TORONTO CHAPTER LICENCE CEREMONY Arthur Potts, MPP (Beaches-East York), Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (right), will be the guest speaker at the PEO East Toronto Chapter licensing ceremony on June 29. Chapter GLP Chair Harneet Panesar, P.Eng., will be hosting the event. Fourteen new engineers will receive their licences. The event will be held at the Arts & Letters club in Toronto. 4 | PAGE PEO WILL HOST 10TH QUEEN’S PARK MPP RECEPTION PEO will host its 10th Queen’s Park Day MPP reception on October 26. It will be held at Queen’s Park. The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will bring engineering leaders and chapter representatives from across the province to Queen’s Park to meet with their MPPs. Last year’s reception, which was also held in October, had almost 200 engineers and MPPs attend, including eight Ministers and 48 other MPPs. Former Attorney General Madeleine Meilleur, PC Leader Patrick Brown MPP (Simcoe North), PC Education Critic, and Catherine Fife MPP (Kitchener-Waterloo), NDP Finance and Treasury Board Critic, addressed the crowd. PEO AND OSPE TO HOST GOVERNMENT RELATIONS CONFERENCE PEO and OSPE will be hosting a joint Government Relations Conference this year with members of PEO GLP and OSPE Political Action Network (PAN) . This will take the place of the Regional Academies and Congresses in 2016. In 2017, the Regional Academies and Congresses will resume. The conference objectives are to learn how engineers can improve their government relations work and how regulatory and advocacy bodies can work effectively together. A variety of MPPs from all parties have been invited to discuss how to build strong, lasting relationships. Other regulators have also been invited to share what they found to be valuable and beneficial in their own programs. Federal Transportation Minister Marc Garneau, P.Eng., MP (Notre-Dame-deGrâce-Westmount) has been sent an invitation to be a keynote speaker. The last Government Relations Conference hosted by PEO was in 2011. The guest speakers then were Registered Nurses Association of Ontario CEO Doris Grinspun, former Ontario Education Minister Sean Conway, and renowned Canadian author Terry Fallis.
