A LOOK AT THE HIGH PROFILE CASES THAT SHOOK ANDHERI IN YEAR 2015 Kainaz Choksey As the year comes to an end, Mumbai Messenger takes you through high profile crimes that took place in 2015, involving models of Andheri. The cases highlight the plight of models and actresses who were victims of crime and a few were the accused too. CASE1 In an instance of supposed protectors preying on the defenceless, two assistant sub-inspectors and a constable from Sakinaka police station were arrested on April 24, this year, for raping a 29-year-old model. The model was raped inside a police chowkie on April 3. She had been forced to accompany the officials there as they had threatened to implicate her in a false case, if she refused. The policemen and three others, including a woman, allegedly also extorted Rs.4.5 lakh in cash, and some gold jewellery, from the model and her boyfriend. Recounting her ordeal, the survivor said that she had visited a five-star hotel in Sakinaka, near the international airport, for the casting of a film, where she met an agent and his friend. The agent asked her to go to one of the rooms on the pretext of meeting production staff. The survivor refused and she rushed out of the hotel. When she was walking away from the hotel, a police vehicle pulled up, and the occupants, three policemen in plain clothes; Assistant Police Inspectors Sunil Khatape and Suresh Suryavanshi and constable Yogesh Kode from Sakinaka police station stopped her. They asked her to get into the vehicle or they would implicate her in a false case. The policemen took her to a police chowkie in the jurisdiction of MIDC police station and raped her till the wee hours of April 4. The woman has also accused the policeman of assaulting her before the incident. After the rape, the policemen told the woman that they wouldn't let her go unless she paid them a few lakh rupees. The victim called her boyfriend, who came with Rs.4.5 lakh in cash, and some gold ornaments. They gave the money and the jewellery to the cops and the model was released from the chowkie in the morning on April 4. The Crime Branch arrested the two assistant police inspectors and the constable. The accused were booked under Section 376 (Rape), Section 354 (A)(Sexual Harassment), 384 (Extortion), Section 341 (Wrongful restraint), 342 (Wrongful confinement), 323 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) and Section 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. The cops were expelled from service. CASE 2: POOJA MISHRA, SHRUTI GUPTA DN Nagar police booked two models and TV actresses Pooja Mishra and Shruti Gupta for abusing and assaulting constables at the DN Nagar police station. Ironically, Mishra and Gupta had sought help from the cops after they had got into a fight with two men on May 28. The duo had alleged that two men who were in an Audi, had passed lewd remarks at them. When a police patrol stopped by to inquire, the Audi sped away. Mishra and Gupta went to the police station to file a complaint, where they accused the cops of letting the Audi escape intentionally. The CCTV footage showed Mishra and Gupta yelling at the cops, calling names and even warning them. The duo ended up trying to assault women constables. Though the cops, intercepted the Audi, Mishra and Gupta claimed that the men who had been brought in were not those who teased them. Mishra and Gupta were booked under Section 353, a serious charge of using criminal force to deter public servant from discharging his duty. CASE 3: BROTHER OF ACTRESS POONAM JHAWER The brother of actress Poonam Jhawer (38) was murdered in Andheri. Jhawer had made her Bollywood debut in 'Mohra' wherein she was paired against Suniel Shetty. The Andheri police registered a case of murder against an unknown person for allegedly killing Kamal Bhavan (52). Jhawer used to stay at Lokhandwala. The deceased was found dead in his car on May 31. The CCTV footage showed Bhavan, the deceased and another man getting into a physical altercation over a minor accident. A case of murder was registered under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code by the Andheri police. Bhavan was a private bank recovery agent. His body was found in his car opposite Rameshwar temple in Jogeshwari. In the CCTV footage obtained by the police, Bhawan appeared to be intoxicated and was seen receiving multiple blows from the accused over a minor accident involving Bhawan's car and the scooter of the accused. Three held for sticking posters in train Kainaz Choksey Force has arrested around 300 people for sticking posters inside train compartments. The Western Railways have made a revenue of Rs.5 lakh from the fine collected from all the accused. SM KABEER/MM ANDHERI: Have you ever wondered while coming across print advertisements in local trains; of self claimed god-men aka babas who claim to help you solve all your problems of your life and advertisements of prospective jobs, whether they were for free, if not for real? The answer is that there are no free lunches in the world. None of the print advertisements can be put up across the walls of the trains in the compartment without proper permissions. If caught, one can be behind bars or need to pay a fine or both. Like the trio who faced the music at Andheri railway station. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested 3 youth for sticking posters inside the new Bombardier local trains at Andheri railway station. According to an RPF official, Andheri “The incident came to light when a Virar bound train halted at platform number 8 at Andheri railway station. During the patrolling hours, we found the movement of the 3 youth a bit suspicious as they were hopping onto each compartment carrying a bunch of pamphlets of private loans with them. We realized that they were carrying posters and pamphlets of prospective job offers and were sticking them inside the train compartments.” “We have arrested Mohammed Saqib (21), Surendra Lodhi (21) and Ajit Singh (27) while they were sticking posters since it is against the law. The accused had received Rs.400 per person for the task. They have been booked under Section 166 (b), 145 (b) and 147 of the Railway Act for defacing and trespassing. In 2015, the Railway Protection From December 24 – 27, a Yagya was organised at Andheri Arya Samaj for peace and prosperity of all. On December 26, a Satyanaraya Katha was organised at the Oshiwara police station. Bigg Boss contestant Priya Malik's racism tirade against firebrand housemate Mandana Karimi may go waste, as the Indian junta has not really identified with her allegations of racism. Priya has earlier appeared on Big Brother's Australian avatar, though without meeting much success. After a tiff on Bigg Boss this week, Mandana asked her to "go back to Australia." Hearing this, Priya Malik began screaming, "You are racist Mandana Karimi." But Bollywood PR guru Dale Bhagwagar who handles the publicity for Mandana has brushed off the instance as "a minor fracas" and "one of the pangs of being on a television reality show". How can he do that? Probably, cause he understands the situation inside out. After all, he is the same public relations expert who handled the media for Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty and even played on the huge international racism controversy with Jade Goody to the hilt. "Racism is to the West, what India-Pakistan is to our region. But sentiments about colour, creed and race don't hold so strong here in India," the publicist points out. Being alone gives us the time we all need to reflect on important events and to organize our feelings about the things that have happened. Without this, we can get overwhelmed with all we are trying to juggle mentally, and this can cause extra anxiety and stress. YOU CAN GET CREATIVE: There's nothing like putting on headphones, listening to your favorite songs, and getting down to work. It doesn't matter if you're a writer, an artist, a musician, or a software engineer; we all have creative outlets and we all need to nurture them as much as we can. Being by yourself gives you the motivation and the opportunity to open your mind and explore new ideas, then put those ideas to good use. YOU CAN RECHARGE: Being around people is both exhilarating and exhausting. It means having to constantly be alert and aware of what's going on around you and in conversations that require your full attention. Socializing at work and with friends is definitely a positive thing, but it can also be draining. When you're alone, you can use that quiet time to recharge and regroup. It's essential to do this so that when you're around people again, you feel refreshed, more energetic, and ready to interact. YOU GET TO KNOW YOURSELF BETTER: Spending time alone means taking your thoughts and feelings into account above anyone else's, and when you do this, you get to explore your personality in depth. The more time you get to know yourself, the more you'll find out just how awesome you are. YOU BECOME MORE INDEPENDENT: When you're alone, you don't have the option of depending on other people for their opinions, advice, or help. You call all the shots, and even though that can be scary sometimes, it LIFESTYLE 14 MUMBAIMESSENGER MUMBAIMESSENGERWEEKLY W ith the year drawing to a close, it's time to celebrate with family and friends and make New Year resolutions for 2016! Perhaps, one of them could be to change facets of your home decor, to start the year on a fresh note? W h i l e upcoming trends are a great guide to choosing home decor, it's best to experiment and incorporate these trends in line with your p e r s o n a l preferences to arrive at a decor style that works for you! Read on for tips on how you can refresh your home in time for the New Year! Artisanal And Hand-Crafted Chic: Growing interest and support for artisanal products from around the globe and locally crafted goods, in recent times, has contributed to experiments with interesting patterns, textures, and shapes. Think handcrafted ceramics, vibrant Suzanis or geometric-patterned Kilim rugs warming up your floors in the winter chill with their earthy charm! Gallery Wall: You could even think of creating a gallery wall to display hand-woven baskets of varied sizes and textures, for an interesting focal point in your living room! Warming Up With Metal: The allure of metals and metallic finishes holds strong, with brass, copper, bronze and gold tones leading the pack. Mix up decor accents in varied metallic tones such as gold, silver and copper for an interesting and trendy dash of bling! Rose Gold: We can't get enough of Rose Gold! Inject this blush tone into your home decor through furniture or accessories, for a shimmer of understated glamour and polish. At One With Nature: Conjure up the gardening enthusiast in you and make plants part of your home decor! After all, plants are one of the hottest home decor accessories around! With their soothing and grounding presence, plants in all shapes and sizes can make their way into your home – as wall decor, hanging planters, table-top gardens, succulents, or terrariums. Bring the outdoors inside with Macramé hanging planters or tiny indoor gardens, to strengthen your connection with nature. Botanical And Floral Patterns: Drawing inspiration from nature, incorporate botanical prints and floral patterns in your wall art and decor accents. You could even use earthy colour palettes, with forest greens and browns, for a feeling of harmony with nature. A Pastel Colour Story: A focus on wellness, relaxation, and tranquility is a great theme to incorporate in the home in the coming year, to help you deal with modern-day stresses. Take, for instance, this living room decorated in shades of pale blue - it paints such a soothing picture to come home to, doesn't it? Rose Quartz Accent Wall: Rose Quartz is a great colour for an accent wall. It effortlessly adds a hint of oldworld glamour to a contemporary home, with the softness of light pink! Of Curated Collections And Finds: Scour your local flea markets and craft fairs for interesting antiques or vintage accents. Creating a lovingly curated look in your home adds oodles of character to it. If ethnic decor reigns in your home, group antique brass or copper knick-knacks together, to create eclectic vignettes in various corners of your home. Vintage Decor: If vintage decor is more your style, collect interesting typography curios, retro posters, and advertisements to display innovatively around the house, or lay out your treasured collection of vintage trays on a quaint gallery wall! A Case Of The Blues: Don't we all just love the colour Indigo? A classic colour, this deep shade of blue balances a sense of mystique with a dash of sophistication. An eclectic patchwork quilt in this shade is sure to add a touch of intriguing drama to your bedroom. Indigo Crockery: Striking crockery in this rich hue is bound to be the centre of animated tea-time conversation! Resolutions for a BEAUTIFUL NEW YEAR also means you become more reliant on yourself - and this is a great thing. Being independent means being self-assured, so that you can bring that confidence to the table when you're with people, too. YOU SEE AND HEAR THINGS YOU WOULDN'T OTHERWISE: We often make idle conversation with people just to fill the silence, but when we're quiet, we can hear and see things we don't notice otherwise. We are able to appreciate the small things in life because we don't miss them when they happen, and being alone can help you pay more attention to those important moments. YOU GET TO DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO: You don't have to make compromises with anyone on where to eat, what movie to watch, or what sights to see on a trip. You can spend all the time you'd like to doing exactly what you want to do, and while having company is sometimes welcome, going on your own private adventures can be just as exciting and fulfilling. YOU'RE MORE PRODUCTIVE: It's easier to get more things accomplished when you're free from distractions - including people - and taking some time to yourself to put all your efforts into getting things checked off your to-do list can be extremely rewarding. A new year is the perfect time to turn over a new leaf, and this includes ditching all those bad beauty habits that may have become ingrained in your routine. Here are five easy-to-keep beauty resolutions for 2016. 1. REMOVE MAKEUP: It may sound obvious, but going to sleep with a face full of makeup is an easy mistake to make, particularly during party season. Cosmetics can clog the pores and slow down the repair process, leading to overnight breakouts and dull skin. Use a simple cleanser before going to bed for happy morning skin. 2. EXFOLIATE: The benefits of dry brushing are widely known -- it sloughs off dead skin cells and boosts circulation for brighter skin. Brush your body in the direction of the heart for a few minutes before showering every day and you could see a real difference. 3. WASH MAKEUP BRUSHES REGULARLY: Brushes can harbor all sorts of bacteria, so it's important to cleanse them regularly. Rinsing them in warm soapy water around once a fortnight and leaving them to dry naturally will keep them free of germs, as well as keeping them more effective in the long term. 4. MOISTURIZE WITH SPF: UVA rays can damage the skin regardless of the weather, so it's important to protect it if you want to ward off the aging process. An easy way to incorporate this into your routine is by using a daily moisturizer containing SPF 15 or higher. 5. GO NATURAL: The 'Slow Cosmetics' movement has been gathering pace over the course of the last year, so there's no better time to try out a more natural approach to your beauty regime. Cutting out synthetic ingredients, silicones and chemical preservatives such as phenoxyethanol and focusing on organic ingredients could do wonders for both you and the environment. 30 Dec, 2015 - 05 Jan, 2016, VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 E: news@mumbaimessenger.com P: 77188 07071 MUMBAIMESSENGER MUMBAIMESSENGERWEEKLY GLOBETROTTING 15 TRAVEL TALES A day at Great Barrier Reef FUN TRAVEL TRIVIA Interestingly, the mortar used to bind the stones of The Great Wall of China was made of sticky rice flour! SIGNS YOU ARE THE WORST IN-FLIGHT PERSON Your Seat Is in the Lap of the Person Behind You: Don't get us wrong: We support seat reclining—within reason. Look behind you. Avoid reclining during mealtime. Maybe don't recline your seat at all if you're sitting in front of Shrek. This is how you can handle that button on the armrest with grace. But passengers who cruelly swing their seats back dentist-chair-style and leave it leaning from takeoff to landing? They give considerate recliners a bad name. Look behind before you recline! You Smell: Where are your shoes? If they are not fastened to the ends of your legs, then there is a problem. And it's more than just your naked extremities: From supersonic farts to smelly snacks to bad breath, there are untold ways to offend the olfactory nerves of your fellow flyers. If you or your belongings emit a perceptible odor, we can pretty much guarantee that everyone in the neighboring rows wants you to go away forever. Your Kid Is Out of Control: The polite tolerance of screaming babies is a generally accepted part of the social contract. A baby can't help screeching like a cat being murdered. Babies cry; this we understand. Out-of-control seven-year-olds are another matter altogether. If your kid is old enough to read (and doesn't live with a sensoryprocessing disorder or other medical impairment), he or she is expected to follow basic commands such as, "Don't touch that lady's hair." Otherwise, your failings as a parent will be noticeable to everyone on the plane. You're Captain Grabby Hands: If you grab the seat in front of you every time you get up, you are the worst. There's not much more to say about this. Flying is uncomfortable enough without having your seat pulled back and released like a slingshot at unexpected moments. Don't touch anyone's seat unless you're about to fall and it's the only way to prevent a face-plant on the drink cart. You're Loud: Not everyone on the plane is watching the same in-flight feature as you. Many of your seatmates are actually trying to sleep. In the confines of an airplane cabin, your shrill cackle has the auditory effect of squealing breaks or the Aflac duck. Same goes for chewing food with an open mouth, listening to loud music on cheap headphones, playing any kind of game with sound effects, making bodily noises, crying because your vacation is over, or having a boisterous conversation You're Feeling Very, Very Friendly: In-flight dating apps like Wingman should be illegal. Can't the airlines do something to block usage of these hellish apps that enhance the possibility I'll be reaching for the barf bag? Airplanes are gross enough as it is. Even a platonic attempt at stranger-to-stranger human connection can quickly become inappropriate and aggressive when made in flight. The object of your attention has nowhere to hide in the event that he or she really isn't interested in talking about weekend plans and the weather. So whether you want to make a friend or a "friend," table it until the plane lands. You're Doing Things That Should Only Be Done in Private: Use your imagination here. This could include anything from picking at your bare feet to examining your split ends. You might think that your seatmate doesn't notice that you're scratching at the scab on your arm throughout the flight. But trust us—he does. And it's making him uncomfortable. You Think You're a Special Snowflake: You may be surprised to learn that you are not the only person on this plane. Look to your left. Look to your right. There are other people! In the event that you are not flying on an empty ghost plane and that you have purchased a coach-class ticket, follow these simple rules: Do not use the flightattendant call button as your ring-for-service bell. Do not snap your fingers at the flight attendant because you want more ginger ale. Do not spend 30 minutes looking at your phone in the bathroom. Do not ask to switch seats on a full flight because you are in the middle seat and you don't like it. And so on. You're Drunk: One of the worst conceivable places to lose your inhibitions in a sea of SKYY vodka is on a flight. You're packed in a metal tube, where boozed-up conduct that would, at worst, garner an eye roll on the ground could easily attract the attention of federal authorities. Yell and use profanity in your local watering hole? You'll be asked to leave. Yell and use profanity at 30,000 feet? You'll face a police escort and disorderly-conduct charges in federal court. You're Invading Space: Your carry-on items are commandeering the floor space of your seatmates. Your butt is in someone's face for an interminable period of time as you wait to use the bathroom. Your fat duffel bag takes up an entire overhead bin. Your elbows are poking across adjacent seats. If these statements describe you, then you're an airplane space invader and you need to be stopped. The solution is easy: Check your oversized bag, and keep your butt and elbows (assuming you know the difference) in check. 'How can you leave Australia without visiting The Great Darshana Doshi Barrier Reef? I told myself and flew down to Cairns from Sydney. Excited to explore the reef stretched over 2000 km having about 3,000 varieties of corals, I booked the day trip with Reef Experience. If one is familiar with snorkelling and can survive seasickness, then donning the mask and fins is the best way to come up and close with the many wonders of marine life. I remember snorkelling the first time in Lankawi where three hours of underwater intriguing stint with the creatures of water had got the child out of me and I had stubbornly refused to get out of water. As all settled in the catamaran, the audio visual followed by a live demo informed us about the use of water suit, snorkelling and scuba diving equipment. As it proceeded deeper into Pacific ocean, the water got rough, getting me sea sick. However I survived it and when it was time to go snorkelling, I was ready. We were told to come back in about two hours and stay within the cordoned area. The high waves in the rough sea were raging against the boat making a loud splashing sound as our instructor told us to move. Following others, I too jumped into the sea. I will never forget the moment when I took this leap of faith. It seemed as if I was in Titanic that was about to sink and we all had to jump for our lives into the rough sea! However as I got stable in water I slowly started relaxing. I spotted some corals that eventually made me forget about the sickness and choppy sea. Hoping to find more varieties and better marine life the explorer in me suddenly came alive and I went on a hunt, unknowingly landing in the zone beyond the cordoned off area. Voila! That is where the treasure was! The dazzling coral formations in several different colours, sea turtles, rays and a huge variety of colourful fishes filled my senses completely. It was like meditation where no sound enters your being and you are one with wonderful creatures around you, oblivion to everything else. It took a couple of whistles and shouts from the instructor to get my attention. When I put my head up and out of water, he was signalling frantically to return to the boundary. I swam back wondering why they would not let you go to the place where dreams resided. I also took my first guided scuba dive. It surely was an ordeal for my ears when I went all the way down to the sea floor! It was normal till the time I touched the oxygen mask that just slipped off my face. I went all breathless till my Pilipino guide rescued me by pulling me up to the surface. It quite unnerved me and I put my dream to be a certified scuba diver on the back burner for the time being. As I landed on the shore, I felt like a mermaid having lived with the creatures of the ocean. The author is a freelance travel writer. BY-CHEF KAVIRAJ KHIALANI Happy New Year to all of you! With our entry into 2016, its time to plan new ways of staying healthy and to be able to retain the nutritive values in our meals. I often come across people who live a busy schedule at work places and also maintain a very active social life as well, full of parties and get togethers, loads of foods to freak on and yet the question remains, how do we still remain fit & healthy? There are many ways to answer this one, the most popular one being to stay fit, exercise daily, going for regular walks and more...but the other aspect to this one is to watch out on what's on our plate.. We often get tempted towards the not so healthy foods in day to day life, but we need to pick & choose what we want to eat. For example a choice to be made between a plate full of fried stuffs compared to having a baked version of the same, it would be wise enough to make a choice which suits our palate and also maintains our health factor. It may not be very easy for all to do so, it sounds nice at times when we listen to or read such statements, but actually following it is like a big challenge for many ! to be able to cut down on calories, fat and high sugar surely needs a lot of perseverance and constant following without breaks. It is best adviced to go for low cal cooking options, have smaller meals but also look at how to preserve the nutrients of the ingredients. Stir frying, steaming and the quick versions work well. As compared to simmering seasonal vegetables for long time we can use the stir fry method, non stick pans, oil and fats can be reduced in quantities by applying the steam and stir fry method of cooking as well. Avoid cooking green leafy vegetables for long and always try and cook them in an open container so as to maintain its green pigment levels and also balance out the nutrition in the same. Looking at colour on the plate, it is important to have a mix of vegetables and fruits in our daily diets. Choose a variety of colours to avoid making your plate look the same always. It may be boring to have the same steamed or boiled foods always but yes, we do have options to add some crunch into our salads by using fresh fruits as well. Dressings for example in case of salads can be made using honey, fresh juices, ginger extracts and also at times can be avoided by just drizzling up some mint, lime and rock salt on our salads with a dash of crushed black pepper which keeps the taste on and adds to the bland flavors of the tossed up versions as well. Try and work on avoiding the calorie loaded gravies with butter, cream, cashew paste, and other forms of high end not so healthy options by at times going in for a chicken tikka or paneer tikka wrap A B C SALAD WITH GINGER PUNCH DRESSING VISITING INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: DON’T MISS OUT GUJRATI CUISINE bagging nine medals in the ‘Great Indian AT AMRELI Culinary Challenge;’ helping the Orient Mewati Sitaram If you love Gujrati cuisine and happen to visit to receive or seeing of your nearest and dearest at T2, Mumbai International airport. My interest in cooking was stirred at an early age when my mother and grandmother prepared goodies for festivals. I accompanied them to the market when they went out to buy meat and the ingredients and observed how they made their choices so carefully and expertly. Those days a boy was either expected to choose a career in engineering or medicine or the government services. However, my parents were broadminded enough to let me follow my pursuit. I emerged from the Institute of Hotel Management and Applied Nutrition (IHMCTAN) Mumbai with dreams of making it in a professional world which was just beginning to find its place among the respectable and lucrative professions of the modern world. My summer internship at the Taj Mahal hotel sharpened my ambition to make my own mark in the calling, I chose. At the Taj I found out for my forte would be in the kitchen. I observed with wonder and awe how the chefs created recipes and skillfully presented and served their creations and earned admiration. I consciously chose to specialize in the Kitchen and the challenge before me was to make the best of the skill I had chosen to acquire. My first job was at the Hotel Sands, a relatively small hotel at Juhu in Mumbai. I look back at the experience again with a sense of gratitude because it was the hands on experience at Sands that further sealed my decision to take become a chef. Who all inspired you in the profession? Those days' three chefs were pioneers in the hospitality industry namely Satish Arora Executive Chef of Taj Mahal Mumbai, Sunil Chakravarty- Exceutive Chef of Oberoi Towers and last but not the least Arvinder Sodhi Executive Chef of Searock Sheraton. There are ways to minimize staining or prevent it before it occurs, though. Cleaning your dentures daily like you would have cleaned your teeth is your first step to keeping them white. There are specific cleaners and brushes you should use for your dentures to make sure you don't scuff or scratch them while you are cleaning. Cleaning dentures will also keep bad bacteria away that can harm your gums or give you bad breath. When cleaning your dentures, you should be thorough about it – brush every surface. Use only dentures toothpaste, rather than the kind you would use for teeth. Some solutions are available that could help keep your dentures the whitest they can be, but these can be discussed in full when you visit. You can also have your dentures professionally cleaned. My gums bleed after I brush. Is this something to be concerned about? - Shaurya Sharma, 48 Yes! You should be very concerned about bleeding gums, especially if you haven't had a check-up in a while. Bleeding gums can mean a variety of different things. Sometimes, it may mean you are brushing too hard. Or it may mean you've developed gingivitis, one of the first stages of gum disease. We won't know for sure why your gums are bleeding until you schedule an appointment with your dentist. Does brushing your tongue help with bad breath? - Rajeev Kapoor, 23 The tongue is a common location for the bacteria that cause bad breath. Brushing your tongue should be part of your overall routine to help remove bacteria from all areas of the mouth – not just your teeth. Be sure to consult your dental professional if you continue to have chronic bad breath. MUMBAIMESSENGER MUMBAIMESSENGERWEEKLY It doesn't require expert advice from a trained fitness professional to understand that cardiovascular activity is an integral aspect of your overall fitness level. Cardiovascular exercise has been scientifically tested to improve heart function and muscular endurance, in addition to fueling a bounty of other health benefits. But is the slog of jogging on a treadmill for seemingly countless hours per week the most efficient method of cardio exercise, and do these machines actually spur sustainable weight loss? Cost of Not Running Outdoors Popular belief might lead you to think that running outdoors causes innumerable stress on joints and ligaments in the lower extremities, but the cost of running outdoors is less than that of a treadmill. According to a study published by the Journal of Sports Sciences in 1996, the lack of air resistance within the general climate of a typical gym results in less energy expended in comparison to outdoor activity. This does not render cardio machines incapable of aiding your weight loss efforts, however, it does indicate that running outdoors is slightly more efficient, and should be regularly incorporated into your workout routine. Gauging Intensity The habitual routines that we endure on an everyday basis have the potential to let up daily workout regimens. If your exercise goal is to lose weight, this could prove costly, especially if you don't increase your heart rate to moderate intensity. According to the MayoClinic, a 160pound person burns approximately 606 calories per hour during a one-hour run at 5 mph, whereas the same person burns just 314 calories at a 3.5mph pace. This variance could ultimately determine whether you're able to reach your weight loss goals. A slight boost in heart rate will yield added calories burned. An optimal level of intensity is between 75 and 90 percent of your maximum heart rate, which can be calculated by simply subtracting your age from 220. Caloric Deficiency Exercise is merely one aspect of weight loss. Burning fat can be boiled down to simple science; it requires caloric deficiency, which essentially means that you need to burn more calories than you consume to stave off unsightly fatty tissues. Although semi-frequent usage of elliptical machines, Stairmasters and treadmills will help you burn calories, it's important to understand that you may need to alter your diet in order to shed some extra pounds. This doesn't equate to starving yourself, however, it's important to eat at least 1,800 calories per day, even while dieting. Recommendations for Improvement It's important to incorporate variation into your workout regimen. This concept doesn't require a complete overhaul of your weekly exercise schedule, but it does demand a few minute changes, like occasionally running outside, or taking a hike instead of spending an hour on a Stairmaster. Cardio machines do indeed help you lose weight, but avoiding the lull of the daily grind at the gym could help increase your level of workout intensity, and boost your motivation.. Various cultures throughout time have embraced this fact as demonstrated by the prevalent uses of sweat lodges, bathhouses and steam rooms in numerous traditions. When you sweat, your body undergoes a series of processes that allow for the release of toxins and an increase in metabolism. What Is Sweat? Sweat is made up mostly of water but also contains minerals, urea, lactic acid, ammonia and sugar. Sweating is your bodies way of regulating its temperature. When you run long distances or exercise in hot weather, for example, your muscles exert themselves and your body overheats. HEALTH&FITNESS 19 MUMBAIMESSENGER MUMBAIMESSENGERWEEKLY Sweating is your body's way of bringing your temperature back to normal. The Benefits of Sweating When you sweat, you breathe faster, your heart works more, your circulation improves and your metabolism accelerates, all in an effort to resume your n o r m a l b o d y temperature. Because your circulation is increased during sweating, many of the toxins and impurities are able to exit your body by way of your open skin pores. This is a good reason to exercise to the point of sweating or to sit in a steam room regularly. Your skin also benefits from sweating. Your skin pores open and any dirt or impurities on the surface layers of the skin have a chance to exit. Sweating regularly, if followed by proper cleansing, will help you to achieve softer and smoother skin. It is believed that the immune system also benefits from sweating. When your body heats up, your body generates more white blood cells. This strengthens your immune system. Sweating for Weight Loss and very natural in appearance. They can enhance your smile or even make wide or round cheeks appear a little narrower. Also, the recovery time from this procedure is quite short. 9 Laser Resurfacing: Laser Resurfacing is a treatment to reduce facial wrinkles and skin irregularities, such as blemishes or acne scars. The technique includes short, concentrated pulsating beams of light on the surface of irregular skin. The two types of lasers most commonly used in laser resurfacing are carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium. 10 Nose reshaping: Rhinoplasty is one of the most desired cosmetic procedures, but many patients are frightened by the potential complications and the risk of unfavorable cosmetic results. Non surgical rhinoplasty is a safe, non-invasive alternative to traditional rhinoplasty. Sometimes it is called the 15 minute nose job as the treatment involves only Dermal filler injection to reshape the nose. Sweating has been discussed heavily as a tool for weight loss. The weight that you lose through sweating is water weight. This weight is quickly replaced when you replenish your fluids. However, activities that lead to sweating often burn up calories. Sitting in a sauna uses up energy as your body tries to restore your normal temperature. If you are sweating because you have been exercising, you have been burning calories. So, sweating is a good goal to incorporate as part of a weight loss program because it means that your body is eliminating toxins and burning up calories. Just be sure to make sweating a part of a larger program of balanced nutrition and exercise for a maximum effect. Sweating for Stress Relief Sweating can also be very relaxing for both your body and your mind. When you sweat, your body's muscles are warmed up by humidity and heat. This helps to release the stress and fatigue brought on by muscle tension. Sweating is healthy and cleansing. It helps your body get rid of toxins. It cleanses your skin. Sweating gets your circulation going and increases cardiovascular activity. It increases your metabolism, leading to calorie burning. It boosts your immune system. Sweating is also an effective stress reliever. To enjoy the health benefits of sweating, include activities in your daily life such as regular exercise, working in the garden on a warm day or sitting regularly in steam rooms and saunas. But the last thing I feel like doing in the morning is exercising. Can't I do my aerobics at night? What's your take on this .Please let me know. My name is Sonal Themka, 16 years. Dear Sonal, Doing intense aerobic exercise on an empty stomach for just 20 minutes first thing in the morning is more effective in burning fat than a full hour of aerobic exercise performed later in the day after you have eaten a few meals. You have to understand that after an overnight fast, blood sugar levels are low, as our carbohydrate reserves. Exercising before you eat causes the body to dip right into stored fat to come up with energy required to make it through whatever rude awakening you are subjected to. If you can't exercise in the morning then the next best thing is to do it is in the evening, after not eating for three hours. For example if you plan to do aerobics at 6.30pm then have a protein and carbohydrate containing meal at 3.30pm.then if you want you can eat again an hour after your workout. The human psyche is a funny thing – January 1, in reality is just another passing day – yet we look at it as a major milestone. And it is not only at a personal level – families, companies and even countries usher in the New Year with resolutions and goals. Budgets are set, targets determined, milestones plotted ... as if in a renewal of life, we have rediscovered that the past is gone and the future beckons. As is the norm, every passing of a milestone, requires a review of what happened in the year gone by. So here are some positive highlights of 2015 that are worth a mention: • For the first time in history, a serving US President was the Chief Guest of the annual Republic Day parade in New Delhi. Not only that, it was the first time a modern-day US President attended an open-to-air outdoor event for over 45 minutes. • In a historic decision, the Supreme Court of India declared the Section 66A of the Information Technology Act as unconstitutional in its entirety. The draconian provision had led to the arrests of many people for posting content deemed to be “allegedly objectionable” on the Internet. • The first ever International Yoga Day was celebrated on 21st June, 2015. PM Modi, a yoga enthusiast, lobbied the United Nations to declare 21 June International Yoga Day. He also led thousands in a mass yoga programme in the capital, Delhi and a new Guinness World Record for the largest yoga class at a single venue. The iconic Times Square in New York also turned into a Yoga Square as some 30,000 enthusiastic people in colourful dresses performed the ancient spiritual practice, celebrating the first UN International Yoga Day. Truly, a moment of pride for India. • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Digital India campaign with the vision to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. In his quest to popularize the program, Narendra Modi gave us stills that every Indian can be proud of. • The government of India approved the induction of women into the combat stream of the Indian Air Force (IAF). Which means that women can now fly fighters. • Two major political events that occurred in 2015 were the Delhi and Bihar elections. While AAP surprised everyone with their mighty comeback in Delhi, the Grand Alliance (JDU, RJD and Congress) had a thumping win in Bihar. • India successfully executed Operation Raahat (operation of the Indian Armed Forces to evacuate Indian citizens and other foreign nationals from Yemen during the 2015 military intervention by Saudi Arabia and its allies in that country during the Yemeni Crisis). The effective and safe evacuation effort had such an impact that 23 countries including US, France and Germany despite having a good air and naval presence in the region turned to India for help. • November 26, the day Constitution was adopted, was declared as 'Samvidhan Divas' as a step towards spreading awareness about the life of its Chief Architect B R Ambedkar. M ost of us know that the legal provisions under drugs and cosmetics act 1940 and the rules framed do not allow the home delivery of medicines. The home delivery of medicines an illegal act, liable for punishment. Now what happens when one places order for online purchase of medicines? Since the online sale of medicines involves the placing of the order by the customer online and the delivery of the order thereafter at the residence of the customer, the practice rendered is absolutely illegal. In October 2015, chemists across the country went on strike against the continuous online sale of medicines in India since the practice is illegal and contravention of various provisions of drugs and cosmetics act. It is high time that the central and state government should take this matter seriously to stop this practice which is illegal. More than 9 lakh chemists were forced to take the strong step of going on strike since their attempt for 6 months to communicate their concern to the union health ministry failed. So, the strike call was an inspiration by those whose legal, ethical and regulated work was being threatened by illegal online sale of drugs. It also becomes important to bring to the government's kind attention the various storage conditions laid down under the act. The storage conditions are stipulated in order to retain potency of drugs and also their therapeutic effects on the body. If drugs are not stored in proper storage conditions, they fail to produce desired physiological effects on the various organs of the body on whom the desired action of medicines is required. Therefore, it is mandatory on the manufacturers to write on the label of the medicines “store in cool and dry place”. And the drug authorities immediately take action if the drugs are not stored in proper conditions at appropriate temperature. When online sale of drugs is affected and drugs are dispatched after receipt of order online, it remains undisclosed the locations of the godowns used for storage and also uncertainty of hygienic storage conditions. If drugs absorb moisture, it can be rendered ineffective or sometimes totally harmful to the patients. There could be growth of bacteria/viruses in the product if not stored under proper storage conditions. The delivery boys of the drugs do not have knowledge while delivering the goods, sometimes goes on bicycles to delivery packets all over the country. It is therefore high time that online sale of drugs to be strictly monitored in the larger interest of valued consumers. Sanjeev Pendharkar, The author is the Directorof Vicco Laboratories. Accept the Disapproval of Others W Anjali Nagpal e all love to be loved and approved, especially when we have worked hard on something or have really taken an effort to do something. It is really wonderful when you get the approval by all, but getting attached with others approval doesn't work. The time you become needy of approvals, it becomes a problem. The actions you will be taking won't be because you love those actions, it will be done just to get the approval. You will start fearing disapproval. When you are just looking for approvals, you will always be in a state of confusion, frustration and disappointment as everyone has a different set of beliefs, so some might approve of your actions. Still you will even find those who will disapprove of your actions. Disapproval is a natural part of life, and accepting disapproval from others is healthy behavior. The sun rises every morning to give light and heat. Some people appreciate the sun and some criticize it, still the sun is not looking for approval. It keeps shining and accepting the disapproval too. The sun is clear and focused on what it wants to do and not what others want it to do and so it is serving its purpose. In life, we all want to do something, which will make our soul happy. It's like we are just inspired to do something and deep down we know this will give happiness. It is our most important choice of who we are and what we were meant to be. Normally what we are doing are the things, which will tell us more about who we really are. Those who fear disapprovals of others are no longer motivated by what they believe to be right. They are motivated just by what other believe or want them to do. They abandon their core identity just to seek the approval from others. When you stop taking other's opinion as competing opinions, you get the understanding of opinions and nothing is right or wrong. You will be able to see that there is no best way, there are some ways which are great for you and some ways are great for others. The late family therapist Virginia Satir is reported to have conducted a research and found that there are more than 250 different ways to wash dishes. Just think for a moment: If there can be so many ways to wash dishes, there can be many ways to do everything in life. Very often, we believe that there is only one “right” way to do things and that just our way or their way. Instead of appreciating and valuing and learning the other 249 ways, we just ignore them, criticize them and deny them completely. Once we understand this then it becomes easy to accept disapproval. Understanding this allows you to open to the opinions of others and at the same time respecting your own. It becomes easy to maintain a relationship understanding we have different opinions and still approve of others and ourselves. It becomes a win-win situation for all. Start approving of yourself as you are just wonderful as you are. Dear Editor The railway authorities need to do something about the level crossing at Jogeshwari station. Even the Bombay High Court is worried about the rise in the number of accidents in the city and it is so bad that the RPF and the railway authorities don't really care about it. Just putting up a banner is not going to help and if the RPF officers are posted there and are not doing anything to stop people from using the level crossing they should be suspended. Also, to stop people from using the level crossing completely, walls should be built so that the people are forced to use the foot over bridge. And the RPF should take the level crossing issue seriously. Thanks to Mumbai Messenger for reporting about it. I hope the railway authorities decide to do something about it. From Amit Sharma To the Editor The fact of the Iskon Priest being booked for cruelty is so shocking! Charring someone with cigarette butts and slashing someone's wrists with a blade for the greed of money is any which way, so inhuman and the priest of all the people doing it is very shocking. People generally go to a Temple with a pure and clean heart and also generally think that the priest at the Temple is more pure and genuine at heart. But this Priest at Iskon seems like a beast rather than a Priest. I hope he is caught soon and brought before the law and an example is made out of him. The woman should have come out in the open against him long back and should have not waited for twenty years till the man threatened to kill her. I hope this man is given strict punishment for cheating so many people and torturing his wife. Thanks to Mumbai Messenger for reporting about it. Kamlesh Gujar To the Editor The encroachment issue at the Evershine Cosmic building is a serious issue. I clearly remember the ground used to be an open space several years ago and slowly a few houses came up and the shops and then a few years later there were more houses and many more shops and now the situation looks really serious. The area around Evershine Cosmic building is completely covered with debris. It makes life of the residents very difficult. And I am sure that there are many more places in Mumbai which are being encroached and nothing is being done about it. The government authorities have always managed to get away from such scenarios. They always have someone or the other one to blame. The BMC will say it is not their jurisdiction and the other authorities will say something else. I guess it is time that the government became more serious about these issues and took some serious steps to prevent these encroachments otherwise the dream of the Prime Minister to have smart cities in India will never come true. Thanks to Mumbai Messenger for reporting about this and making people aware about it. Regards Abhishek Jain Tell us what you think!
