ALBUFEIRA
A coastal dream on the Algarve
Welcome
WELCOME TO
ALBUFEIRA
Bem-vindo in the Algarve is one of Europe’s most
sun-drenched holiday regions, with over one hundred idyllic beaches. One of them, Marinha, was
even voted among the ten most attractive beaches
in the world. However, the Algarve offers you far
more than bathing fun and sunshine: see one of
Europe’s most bizarre rocky coasts, take trips inland,
hike in fascinating mountains and stroll through
whitewashed villages. And a varied children’s programme awaits our young guests every day.
You don’t need to leave the Hapimag Resort to
experience the splendour of Mediterranean flora:
a sweeping garden with diverse Mediterranean
plants invites you to linger a while. Even vines are
part of the landscape. Portugal remains an insider tip
on the European wine map. Try fine Portuguese
wines and enjoy the country’s cuisine at the “Vista
Mar” restaurant or at the “Garden Grill” with a view
of the Atlantic.
We look forward to welcoming you in Albufeira and
hope you have an unforgettable stay.

Location
ALBUFEIRA:
A COASTAL DREAM
ON THE ALGARVE
Albufeira is located in the golden middle
of the Algarve coast, right by the sea.
The Hapimag Resort is situated slightly
above the Atlantic.
The little town of Albufeira is a 45-minute drive away
from Faro international airport. A few kilometres to
the west, the Hapimag Resort nestles harmoniously in
the coastline. You can get to four picturesque bathing
bays direct form the resort; in a few minutes’ walk,
you will also arrive at a six-kilometre-long sandy each.
Albufeira can be conveniently reached by bus or
hire car. The bus station is 150 metres away, and you
can get to the railway station by car in 10 minutes.
Around three-quarters of an hour’s drive away there
are various towns with old town centres, market halls
and picturesque ports.

History
HISTORY AND
CULTURE
The name of your holiday location
reaches far back into history. Today,
Albufeira is the Algarve’s tourism
capital.
Al-Buhayra – Albufeira. The place name originates
from the Arabian period and means roughly “saltwater lake”. Various signs of the town’s long history,
which reaches back to the Roman era, can still be
seen today – even though the great Lisbon earthquake in 1755 destroyed Albufeira.
Fishing and processing of fish, dried fruit and cork,
as well as trade, were the region’s most important
economic sectors following rebuilding. In the 1970s
Albufeira rose to become the “tourism capital” of
the Algarve and is now a modern, pulsating holiday
location.
“Where the land ends,
the sea begins and you
feel the spirit of faith and
adventure that guided
Portugal’s caravels to new
worlds for the world.”
From: Luís de Camões,
“The Lusiad”

TOWN, COUNTRY,
PEOPLE
Small, tranquil mountain village –
great city by the sea: Get to know the
contrasts on two excursions.
Over the mountain high roads
This excursion leads you to largely unknown
mountain landscapes – the Serras of the Algarve.
In Cachopo, a typical village on the border of
the Alentejo region, visit a small, carefully curated
regional museum about the work and people’s
everyday lives. Enjoy a typical regional meal here.
In the afternoon, return via the “Serra high road”.

coastal landscape during the journey. To round
off the trip, visit the town of Tavira, the “Little

SAILBOAT
AHOY!
Set sail on a family excursion and enjoy
a trip on the historic ship “Gageiro” or a
sunset cruise on the “Sun Odyssey”.
Sail along Europe’s most beautiful and sunniest
coast on this historical boat, which was built in 1926.
You will sail from Portimão towards Armação de Pera
or Lagos and pass the big smuggler’s grotto and
other bizarre rock formations, as well as a big rock
labyrinth that changes colours as the sunbeams
play on it.
The modern, fast “Sun Odyssey” takes you west
towards Cabo São Vicente. The sun slowly sets into
the sea in front of you and conjures up bizarre
cloud and wave configurations before your eyes.
An unforgettable sailing trip!

Indulgence
CORK AND
CUISINE
Discover Portuguese delicacies in the
market halls or find out, on location, how
cork is processed.
Loulé: Market hall and gypsy market
An excursion to Loulé is on offer on many Saturdays.
The old Arabian town showcases genuine Portuguese everyday life. Visit the gypsy market and one
of the Algarve’s most attractive market halls. The
market hall is packed with lively rural crafts. Vegetables and fish are on sale, ham from black pigs is
sampled, there is gossip and shop talk and the bica
is “diluted” with a pomace brandy.
São Brás: History of cork and “porco preto”
This excursion leads to the eastern part of the Algarve. In São Brás de Alportel you will visit the
museum that highlights the region’s cork history.
The excursion continues into the mountains, which
abound in cork oak forests. We visit a farmer who
still cuts cork himself and keeps the famous black
pigs (“porco preto”) and have a hearty snack. After
the black pigs we continue to a change of scene –
two small, whitewashed villages.
Times and prices for
all excursions are available in the current
weekly programme.
