Autograph Sessions It’s cool to see your favorite actors on stage during the Q&A sessions, but to meet them face to face and get a personally signed item from them takes your convention experience to a whole other level. While some guests are contractually prohibited from signing unlicensed photos, for the most part, what you have signed is up to you. Please keep your items within the bounds of good taste. You can bring something from home, get a photo or some other item from the Dealer’s Room, get your program book signed, or, in many cases, you can even purchase a special photo from the guest at the autograph table. Tickets can be purchased in the Activities Room next to the autograph tables. Autograph times will be posted at the autograph tables during the convention. You are entitled to one autograph per autograph ticket, but there is no limit to the number of tickets you can purchase. Each guest is scheduled to sign for a limited amount of time. Guest autograph tickets are fully refundable prior to their last scheduled autograph session of the show. Guests have two autograph lines – one for Platinum Members and the other for everyone else. The lines alternate to keep things moving. Federation Ball - THE Saturday Night Party The Federation Ball is in the Activities Room this year. The Ball starts at 9:00pm Saturday, so be ready! It doesn’t matter if you’re in costume or not, it’s always fun. Door prizes awarded, but you must be present to win! Enter the dance contest for a chance to win some cool prizes. The audience members get to help with the judging! Cost is only $3.00 per person. Music is provided by professional DJ company ACES. The Federation Ball is sponsored by the USS Pioneer and O.m.e.g.a. ALL proceeds benefit the American Diabetes Association, Dumb Friend’s League Furry Scurry and OMEGAResponders! Stardate 201603.11 Welcome to StarFest Denver 2016. Yogi Berra said it best: “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” A few years ago we packed up and moved the convention to the Marriott DTC, and now we are back. It’s kind of nostalgically sweet that we find ourselves returning. We’ve made some programming adjustments to fit the convention into these facilities. We’ve planned, reworked the plans and then changed the plans to create the best StarFest experience possible. Please have patience with your fellow convention attendees (and our staff) if they look lost or disoriented. After all, many of the people you will see this weekend weren’t even born when our last StarFest was here! We will be returning back to the Marriott and Hilton in the Tech Center facilities for the next convention on April 21-23, 2017. At last year’s convention we noted the passing of Leonard Nimoy. As you can imagine 2016 is a little bitter-sweet as it marks 50 years since Star Trek was first aired. I got into Star Trek watching reruns. Every day I’d come home from school and watch an episode - hoping to see a new one - but usually sitting down to enjoy a favorite all-over again. I watched Star Trek so many times that the characters became my best friends. When my parents got divorced, I’d think about how Spock would have held back his emotions. When I’d see some injustice I’d get upset and express emotional indignation like McCoy. I never really put myself in Kirk’s shoes with the girls, but I’d explore new places and meet new people with the kind of enthusiasm that Kirk taught me. Rather than dwelling on characters we may have lost to time, let’s dedicate this convention to celebrating the dreams and imagination that those shows inspired. Welcome to a StarFest where we plan to celebrate 50 years of boldly going where no man has gone before! All you have to do is stand next to the actor and smile. The photo sessions are scheduled to give you an opportunity to have your picture signed after the photo session (separate ticket required) at the guest’s next autograph session. Groups are allowed to pose in photos, but each person in the group must purchase a photo ticket (each will receive a photo). Tickets for some guests may sell out and processing time varies. You are not guaranteed the opportunity for an autograph after your photo is taken. Photo session tickets are fully refundable prior to the guest’s last scheduled photo session. Jaime Murray Actress Jaime just completed the movie The Rapture, in which she plays Fiona. The film is a religious mystery story in the vein of The Da Vinci Code. Ms. Murray is probably best known to fans of the series Defiance in which she starred as Stahma Tarr. Stahma was a very empowered female villain on the series whose role expanded dramatically as Jaime’s contribution to the show became apparent to the writers. Jaime Murray is also well known for her contribution to the Warehouse 13 TV series as H.G. Wells. In that role, she appeared in 15 episodes of the series. She also appeared this year in Sleepy Hollow (TV), but it’s strangely probable that it was her role in the British TV series Hustle that got her booked for StarFest (ask Stephen Donnelly about that). Page 4 Bob Morley stars as Bellamy Blake in the CW’s drama/sci-fi series THE 100 which in 2015 he was nominated for a Teen Choice Award for “Choice TV Actor in a Sci-fi/Fantasy Show” Morley recently starred as Aiden in the hit Australian series Neighbours and starred in the Australian feature film thriller Road Kill, opposite Sophie Lowe, Xavier Samuels and Georgina Haig. Tahmoh has a very strong connection and devotion to his family with whom he spends time with whenever possible. In his spare time enjoys a variety of athletic pursuits including being a competitive kick boxer. Everything from phony claims of people “in touch with the other side,” to ghosts, poltergeists, cryptids, and UFOs. Frazetta Girls Comic Art Purveyors In 2012 a few years after Frank Frazetta’s passing, Holly,Frank’s daughter and Holly’s three daughters, Sara, Brittany and Rachael created Frazetta Girls, LLC to honor the Frazetta legacy. The business started with a few local Florida comic conventions, a Facebook fan page, Frazetta signature t-shirts and some vintage prints. In under 6 months they were partnered with film maker, Robert Rodriguez and created a full online shop, offering canvas prints, limited edition giclees and full sublimation graphic t-shirts. The Frazetta Girls have toured their and Rodriguez’s original Frazetta art around the country, most recently, SXSW in Austin, Texas and Art Basel in Miami. In 2015 there were exciting collaborations with large clothing brands, Rodriguez began production on the highly anticipated remake of Ralph Bakshi and Frazetta’s, “Fire & Ice” animated film, original Frazetta art continued to have pop-up exhibitions and the Frazetta Girls continued making appearances at comic conventions throughout the U.S. All of you art fans, and more importantly my fellow die-hard Frazetta art fans, make sure not to miss out on this year’s convention where you can pick up some amazing Frazetta artwork and other wonderful items from the Frazetta Girls. Christopher K. Tullis Illustrator Ever since I was a child I’ve had a passion for art. While the other kids were playing sports and watching TV, I was busy copying my favorite anime characters, and drawing prehistoric monsters with great gnashing teeth. By the time I got to high school, I was a much better artist than I was a student, and my guidance counselor, Mr. Hater (yep, that really was his name) took notice. While I swear I can remember every word he said to me that day, I’ll spare you the details and give you the short version. Mr. Hater told me in no uncertain terms that I should give up drawing and focus on my school work, and that if I continued to believe that I would ever make a living as an artist, I would never amount to anything and wind up broke and living on the streets holding a sign saying “will draw for food.” Right then and there I swore to myself that I would prove him wrong. A few years later an article about me appeared in the newspaper. My ability as a draftsman and sculptor had earned me a position as a curatorial assistant at a major natural history museum where I was sculpting the missing bone fragments necessary to complete the museum’s display of the largest terrestrial vertebrate skull on the planet. I bought an extra copy of that newspaper and dropped it off to Mr. Hater personally. I was told I couldn’t make a living as an artist, that art was only a hobby, and that one day soon I would have to get a “real” job (whatever that means.) I was told wrong, and I’m betting you were too. I have earned an income as an artist nearly my entire adult life. I have drawings and paintings in private collections all over the world, and I’ve created life-size memorial Page 10 StarFest Denver 2016 • ArtFest •ComicFest • DoctorWhoFest •GameFest • HorrorFest • KlingonFest • ModelFest • RoboCon sculptures in bronze that will gaze across grassy fields long after I’m gone. GAME DESIGNERS Tim Brown has been a designer at Game Designers’ Workshop, an editor at Challenge magazine, and the director of product development at TSR, Inc. Marc Miller, Frank Chadwick, Lester Smith, and Timothy Brown of GDW designed the new game Traveller: 2300 (1986) as an expansion of the original Traveller role-playing game. Brown went to TSR in 1989, where he eventually became Director of Game Development. Brown co-created the AD&D Dark Sun setting with Troy Denning and Mary Kirchoff. Brown and Denning led the project, alongside fiction editor Kirchoff, and they were soon joined by artist Brom, who contributed the unique illustrations that helped set Dark Sun apart from the other TSR settings, making Dark Sun the first of TSR’s world designs with a more artistic sensibility. Brown and Denning also put together the 1991 D&D ”black box” set, which became a top-seller for TSR, selling half a million copies in the next six years. Brown later went on to found Destination Games and work with Imperium Games. For Imperium’s fourth edition of Traveller(also called Marc Miller’s Traveller or T4) published in 1996, the designers worked on distinct parts of the rules, with Brown writing about aliens. Sweetpea Entertainment bought out the stock of the many creators who had worked on T4 and took over some of the day-to-day operations of the company; Brown took the helm of Imperium Games under Sweetpea’s guidance, and was now the only official staff for Imperium, with others acting as freelancers. Brown, James Ward, Lester Smith, John Danovich, and Sean Everette founded the d20 company Fast Forward. Entertainment. Jay Little Sean Brown Sean started playing games at 5 with his Uncle Dave every day after school. He first played Chess and then moved on to Feudal and Thinking Man’s Golf. By the age of 7, his older brother Shad had caught the full bug for D&D and the two played role playing games with their close friends Ryan and Dwayne for the next 10 years. At 12, he was consumed by the Gamemaster series of games by MB, mostly Axis and Allies but also Conquest of the Empire, Broadsides, and Fortress America (still to this day, his favorite — thanks Mike Gray!). After spending a year developing the game Teraforming (while recovering from knee surgery) Sean attended his first Gencon to sell the game and landed a job with Eagle Games doing demos. He later helped to build a distribution network (FRED) and continued developing and distributing games for Eagle Games. With Mr. B Games Sean has utilized Kickstarter to provide the financial backing to fulfill his lifelong dream of running his own game company. His current offerings are Alien Uprising, Spurs, Realm of Heroes, Clockwork Kingdom, Posthuman, WarQuest, Prospectus and Helionox. Starfleet Academy Starfleet Academy is a fun way to experience the Star Trek Universe first hand as a student at the StarFest Branch Campus. Each class is designed to present humor, audience participation and a different way of looking at the Star Trek Universe. Each class is self-contained, but those who complete all four classes will receive a diploma and gift from the convention. This year Starfleet Academy looks at the History of Star Trek. Starfleet Academy: History 201 – The Captain Kirk Era Starfleet Academy starts out our activities this year with a look at the original Enterprise crew. We will look at life on the NCC-1701 – the crew, what it takes to be a Red Shirt Security Officer and that all important guideline – WWKD? What Would Kirk Do? Starfleet Academy: History 202 – The Captain Picard Era The second Starfleet Academy class revisits the Picard era of the Enterprise – The various adventures, the diverse crew, dealing with empires, alliances and syndicates and, of course, Wesley Crusher. Starfleet Academy: History 203 – Deep Space Nine and USS Voyager The third Starfleet Academy class will focus on two other significant entities in the Federation. First, a visit to Deep Space Nine – the Cardassians and Bajorans and the Dominion War — and then a trip to the Delta Quadrant and a ride on the USS Voyager. For both of these we will look at how the various crews dealt with adversity, discuss some amusing moments and give the students a chance to experience life at the edges of the Federation. Starfleet Academy: History 204 – The Enterprise Elsewhere – Enterprise and Alternate Realities We will finish the Starfleet Academy classes with a brief visit to the original Enterprise Starship – NX-01 — followed by accounts of the Enterprise in other media, including the animated series, novels, and comic books. We’ll wrap up with a look at the Alternate Cinematic Timeline. Come and be ready to enjoy a look at the fringes of the history of the Starship Enterprise. . Exploration at the Edge: New Horizons at Pluto and Beyond Just what it sounds like. Presented by Dr. Alex Parker. Last summer, humanity’s first robotic explorer of the worlds beyond Neptune reached its primary target: the Pluto system. During a whirlwind first-reconnaissance flyby at over 50 times the speed of a jet airliner, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft imaged Pluto and its five moons in unprecedented detail. In this talk, I will cover the history of the outer solar system exploration, the New Horizons mission, and examine the latest images and findings from the mission. I will conclude with a preview of where New Horizons could head next in an extended mission deep into the Kuiper Belt, targeting a flyby of a completely new and unexplored world (currently) called 2014 MU69, the most distant world ever targeted for exploration. Forbidden Planet - Behind the Scenes The 50th anniversary of Forbidden Planet was in 2006. During the year there were a number of events including panels at conventions and signings featuring some of the original cast members and other guests. The largest was the Forbidden Planet panel at the San Diego Comic-Con that year. On hand were original actors Richard Anderson, Warren Stevens and Earl Holliman. The film enjoyed a brief theatrical release that year. Even the Denver Film Festival took part. They presented, in 35MM, a complete work print of the film. The film has no music or optical effects. It was a treat to see.We presented Forbidden Planet as well at StarFest that year, along with a look at the making of this historic film. This year marks the 60th anniversary and StarFest is delighted to screen the film on Friday evening after the Meet and Greet. Our MC, Kevin Atkins, will introduce the film. On Saturday morning Kevin will present an updated illustrated look behind the scenes. He will also show several deleted scenes from a rare work print of the film. Game of Thrones Theories We will discuss some of our favorite Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire theories and point out where the books and TV show support, and disprove, the theories. Forbidden Planet - The Movie Forbidden Planet, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s first attempt at science fiction, premiered on March 15th, 1956. It was a film years ahead of its time, the direct forerunner of Star Trek, Star Wars and the big-budget science fiction films of today. Gorram Browncoats! It was the first film to be set in a future where mankind is spreading out into the universe in faster-than-light starships. How do you self-publish? Should you self publish? Do I need an agent? Why? Should I use a Pen Name? What if I do? I heard… but then I heard…? Bring your burning questions about being a writer, and we will do our best to solve them! In an era where Cold War fears materialized in mutated, giant insects, or alien invaders subverting all that was American, Forbidden Planet worked as all good science fiction does: it examines ourselves. Quite literally, it looked into the materialization of our own inner demons. While most ’50s movies are marred by obviously wire strung rockets, rehashed radiation clouds or just plain bad acting, Forbidden Planet continues to view like a top of the line movie, some sixty years later. The film was entered into the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2013, being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Join fellow local Browncoats for a discussion centered on Joss Whedon’s Firefly/Serenity ‘Verse. Learn about our upcoming group activities, Shindigs and the upcoming “Can’t Stop the Serenity” charity screening of Serenity. Share with us your love of this shiny TV series and film. Join Apsara and companions as they travel between worlds, performing some of the thousand dances they have picked up along the way. Recently regenerated from Les Femmes, Apsara looks forward to sharing their unique fusion Bellydance stylings with you. The story of Forbidden Planet holds up so well because it is lifted from Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Starring Leslie Nielson, Walter Pidgeon and Anne Francis, it tells the tale of a ship from Earth investigating the missing expedition to Altair IV. When they arrive they find that most of the crew had died nearly two decades before with only a scientist and his daughter still alive. James Short will cover the basics in “A Shopping Cart for Space.” Bennett Rutledge will show how thinking on shelter has developed in “A Cozy Little Place on Pluto.” Tim Miller will look at what lets you level-up from survival to living, or “Creature Comforts in Hard Vacuum.” Jim Barnard will saddle up for “Getting Around Where There Are No Trails.” And, of course, we’ll need YOU for some ideas of what to actually DO out there! Where Did This Chocolate Come From? Every time our character turns a corner in a secondary world, it seems there is a decision to make. Even something as simple as a drink (and brawl!) in a tavern can lead to a thousand questions about commerce, culture, and connections. Our panelists will talk about these decisions, pitfalls and rabbit holes, and when to say when. StarFest is a place where everyone can meet together in the spirit of mutual trust and respect. Harassment is a form of discrimination that is offensive, impairs morale, undermines the integrity of relationships and causes serious harm to the productivity, creativity and enjoyment of the convention. All convention attendees have the right to be in an environment that is free of discrimination and harassing conduct, including sexual harassment. Harassment on the basis of race, color, creed, ancestry, national origin, disability, marital status and/or sexual orientation is not what we are about. Harassment means persistent and unwelcome conduct or actions. Harassment may be subtle and/or manipulative and is not always evident. It does not refer to occasional compliments of a socially acceptable nature. It refers to behavior that is not welcome and is personally offensive. All forms of gender harassment are covered. Verbal Harassment: Jokes, insults and innuendoes (based on race, sex, age, disability, etc.), degrading sexual remarks, referring to someone as a stud, hunk or babe; whistling; cat calls; comments on a person’s body or sex life, or pressures for sexual favors are not tolerated. Non Verbal Harassment: Gestures, staring, touching, hugging, patting, blocking a person’s movement, standing too close, or brushing against a person’s body are not tolerated. If a convention attendee violates this policy, they risk being expelled from the convention and/or permanently banned without refund. If you believe you are being harassed, report it to the nearest StarFest staff member. We can’t help you if we don’t know there’s a problem. Whedonverse Avengers, Firefly, Buffy, Angel, Serenity and so much more! Celebrate the many worlds of Joss Whedon with a lively interactive panel. N’robSo was a member of the ship IKS Notqa. Bob joined House VamPyr back in 2010. He was the Holographic Officer (official photographer) for House VamPyr and weapons Officer on the IKS notqa’. Bob was much beloved in the convention community. He made friends easily. His company was always enjoyed. Whether at a convention, a festival, or party, Bob could always be seen with a smile on his face. Bob was an accomplished photographer. He has made friends across many communities with his skill and talent. His work was often displayed in Denver’s art galleries. The loss of N’robSo leaves a hole in our bloody Klingon hearts. House VamPyr will mourn him as Klingons, and as humans who loved our dear friend Bob. Join us Saturday in the Activities room as we celebrate the life of Blackbeard Bob and give rise to the Klingon Death Howl in honor of our fallen warrior N’robSo.
