PLACES
and
faces
of the
Heritage Corridor
The Heritage Corridor is made up of many
communities that offer a blend of history,
entertainment, culture and charm entwined with
great eats, shopping destinations, lodging facilities,
and open roads making the Heritage Corridor a
great place to explore and re-discover!
The City of Countryside, located in the heart
of the Chicagoland area offers everything from
golf to theatre. You can stop at Flagg Creek Golf
course for some tee time or drive over to
Countryside Park for a concert during the
summer months. If you’re a race fan, you can
discover the need for speed at Chicagoland
Speedway in Joliet. Joliet is also home to the
Joliet JackHammers minor league baseball team,
where visitors can take in a game on their drive
over to Channahon to hike McKinley Woods.
McKinley Woods is the only place in Will County
where you will find a combination of bluffs, deep
ravines, and forest. Not too far from Channahon
you will find Abraham Lincoln National
Cemetery in Elwood. Thousands of Veteran
heroes have been buried at this location among
a grassy knoll.
18
www.heritagecorridorcvb.com
Check out Mendota’s Sweet Corn
Festival in August or see live buffalo
at Buffalo Rock State Park located
along the Illinois River, offering scenic
views of the river along with hiking
trails and unique earthen sculptures.
Rightfully called "The shortcut to
Starved Rock" and the "Closest city
to Starved Rock", Oglesby enjoys
a strategic position in the Illinois
Valley to take advantage of the tourist trade that
Starved Rock generates. While in Oglesby visitors can
stop by Delaney’s restaurant for some good grub. In
Ottawa, you can take a ride on the Sherri Lynn
Riverboat and marvel at sandstone bluffs and if you are
a thrill seeker you can skydive at Skydive Chicago, a 230
acre state of the art skydiving facility.
Looking for a place to stop and shop? Peru mall
offers over 100 stores with name brand items and
if antiques are what you’re after, you can visit the
Peru Antique Mall. Wilmington is also home to
several antique shops where anyone is sure to find
something that reminds them of their childhood.
While the women are shopping the men can fish
along the Kankakee River in Wilmington.
Maybe you want to get away from the hustle and
bustle of big cities and stop in Streator for an
historic river walk along the shaded banks of the
Vermillion River. Streator is also famous for being
home to The Weber house, a 1937 storybook
home built by Ernest and Zelma Weber. The
home features a beautifully landscaped garden
and several special events each year including
a colonial Christmas.
Want to take a hike among woodsy bluffs and
cascading waterfalls? Stop in Utica for a walk at
Starved Rock State Park or a stay at Grizzley Jack’s
Grand Bear Lodge, where guests can enjoy their
new state of the art indoor water park. From
here you can mosey over to LaSalle for a quiet
day at the Hegeler Carus Mansion, built in 1874
and offering tours year round.
Attend the 17th annual I&M Canal Rendevous in
Willow Springs then stop by the Village Green in
Western Springs to see The Tower, a museum,
built is 1892, and now exhibits photos and information on the history of Western Springs. In the late
afternoon you can visit the new Quarry Cinema in
Hodgkins before heading to dinner at Marconi’s
Ristorante for Italian cuisine in LaGrange.
Other outdoor activities to enjoy include the
Sandwich Fair in September and an outdoor
walk along the beautifully maintained bridge at
McCullough Park in Burr Ridge. Make sure not to
miss the Independence Day celebration in Homer
Township if you are visiting for the holiday.
Hungry again? Stop by Cookies in Minooka for
their famous Chicken and fried mushrooms or for
the bigger appetite which loves leftovers for days,
you can visit Baci in Plainfield. While you are in
Plainfield, don't miss the Strawberry Festival. This
event happens every spring and is too fun to miss!
Another hot spot that is famous for their chicken is
White Fence Farm in Romeoville. This is also
close the Isle a Cache museum where you can
explore exhibits of the French fur trade.

UTICA
In 2004 The Village of North Utica
was in major devastation over the
violent acts of a tornado that flattened downtown buildings which
housed shops and restaurants. Since
last year, the Village has seen much
improvement in the redevelopment of
the downtown area. Visitors can
visit one of many shops for antiques
or eat at one of the specialty restaurants while making their way to
Starved Rock State Park or to
Grizzly Jacks Grand Bear Lodge.
The State Park is home to thousands
of visitors each year and the Starved
Rock lodge at the park is a must
stay. Relax in the lobby with a book,
eat at the fantastic restaurant or
take a hike and see one of many
wonderful waterfalls. Just across the
street for the State park is Grizzly
Jacks Grand Bear lodge. It has
something for everyone, featuring
America’s first motion and sound
waterslide, a three story lodge,
arcade, pastry shop and more.
TRAVEL TIP
