Brewster Rd., Herrin, IL 62948 618-559-4730 james.summers@icloud.com Seen on a t-shirt the other day--The Older I Get, The Faster I Was! You’ve all heard that phrase many times; I know I have. And while it’s true that our memories sometimes inadvertently embellish past running performances, we can bring ourselves back to reality by digging into some closet or musty garage and pulling out our old running logs. I guess that’s one good reason for keeping a log—to have a lasting record of performances, injuries, and personal running reflections throughout the years. In your log, you find the truth about how you did at the 1998 Herrinfest or 2002 Boston Marathon—it’s there in black and white and doesn’t change as the years go by! I’d be preaching to the choir if I wrote about the importance of a running diary, especially to new runners—you all know the benefits of having written goals and periodical evaluations of your training. I know in my own case, in the early years of running, just having a daily log made me more committed to that daily run—there was a power in the written word. And yes, it’s fun to look back at your training and races 5, 10, or even 20 years past just to relive those times. Jeff Galloway also mentions finding “unexpected philosophy” in his old training notes, an idea I agree with. The running diary can be not only a record of exterior weather, but also records the interior weather of a thoughtful athlete. It’s that interior commentary of past training partners, memorable races, and the many wonderful friends through the years that, to me, recall a life-long marathon of joy. And I think of Dr. George Sheehan’s words, that the runner “has found a way to make the ordinary extraordinary, the commonplace unique, the everyday, eternal.” Gene Tincher (2013) 2708 Childers Rd., Marion, IL 62959 618-694-9035 genetincher@gmail.com 2015 River to River Relay: Bannon’s Mountain28 years of Relay Running! Whether they’re ASICS, Nike, or Brooks, I have some big shoes to fill. Mike Ahrens has provided exceptional leadership and brought boundless energy as Club President the past two years. And the same goes for Scott Ishman before him. Our dedicated Board of Directors also deserve recognition and thanks. These folks largely fly under the radar, yet work tirelessly behind the scenes to make RRR operate smoothly and successfully. Lots of new and exciting things are in the works for the Club - for example, a spiffy inflatable RRR finish line that will debut at the Herrinfesta Road Races and additional perks for new members and those who renew their membership. But some things will not change for RRR: We will continue to passionately promote running, walking, and fitness in southern Illinois. We will continue our long tradition of providing a variety of unique, affordable, and high quality race events. We will continue to assist and support other clubs and organizations that share our aim of getting people moving and keeping them healthy. Members of RRR are extraordinarily nice individuals. But you already know that. They come in all shapes and sizes, CONTENTS by Tony Miksanek from all kinds of occupations and diverse backgrounds, range in age from three to eighty something, and run or walk at a broad assortment of paces. RRR is you. RRR is hundreds of other people who are nothing like you. Except for a shared infatuation with moving their feet. And an extraordinary ability to encourage and nurture fellow runners and walkers. When we run or walk, there is discovery (about ourselves and our surroundings), joy (okay, some suffering too), a sense of liberation, camaraderie, solace, competitive fire, sweat, and sometimes plantar fasciitis. It’s all part of the package. River to River Runners is vibrant and growing. Thanks for being such an essential part of the movement. Two “Locals” Complete 100 Miler Matt Crain of Marion and Bryan Campbell, formerly from Carterville, recently completed the Thunder Rock 100 miler held in Ducktown, TN. This event is regarded as one of the best ultras in the United States. It is a point-to-point trail race run entirely within the confines of the Cherokee National Forest. The race features over 16,000’ of climbing on incredibly scenic terrain. Matt finished in 29:29 (45th) and Bryan in 29:49 (51st). There was a 30 hour cut-off. Congratulations guys! Thanks to Jim Kramer I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the great race photography we’ve had in the Reporter the last few years. There are many individuals to thank for these pictures, but a special thanks goes to Jim Kramer and his wonderful eye for, not only running events, but the beautiful natural world of southern Illinois, which we’ve occasionally incorporated here in the newspaper. Thanks, Jim--I really appreciate it, as do all the Reporter readers! We clean-up a three mile section of highway south of Marion. During our last clean-up ten bags were collected. One volunteer commented that litter reflects the education level of the community. It implies that if we want to attract quality businesses in Southern Illinois step one would be to clean up after ourselves. Didn’t we learn that lesson in kindergarten? We can attract businesses like discount stores (Dollar General, Dollar Store, Save-a-Buck, Fred’s) and car dealerships, and corner pharmacies, but can we have the high-tech, high-paying businesses move in? Boston Bound! Is the educated work force there? Let’s all pitch in to clean-up our roadsides, community buildings, parks, playgrounds, business buildings and surrounding areas. Let show the CEO’s of America that Southern Illinois has an educated work force and ready for a pharmaceutical company, a professional business campus, an energy technology center, an expanded research park. The word scholarship is music to the ears of parents with college-bound young adults. One doesn’t have to look very hard to find a news story related to the escalating cost of higher education and its financial burden on families and students. Parents and students are looking at every monetary angle available to help offset the rising costs of a higher education, whether those are scholarships or student loans. Scholarships are offered for academic achievement and other extramural activities that include civic engagement, religious activities, volunteerism and athletics to name a few. The River to River Running Club, in its pursuit to promote running and a healthy life style, offers an annual scholarship to its membership. To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must either be a member him or herself or the child of a parent who is a member, and be going to attend an institution of higher education. Selection of the scholarship recipient(s) is based on an essay on “the role running plays in your life” that is required with the application. So, if you are a runner or running has impacted your life in some significant way, take the opportunity to offset those cost of attending college and submit an application for the River to River Runners’ scholarship. 24 • R iver to R iver Runners S ummer 2015 www.river2river.net 2015 AREA RACE AnD WALK SCHEDuLE All dates are Saturday events unless noted. Team Fish Out of Water wants to publicly thank our “saviors” -- the friends and new and old acquaintances whose generosity and material assistance enabled us to finish through Leg 22 and to make it to Golconda to see the rainbow. At Exchange #16 on Gilead Church Road our van (borrowed from a local church for the day) was emitting smoke from the front right wheel area. We pulled into the parking lot at the Cedar Lake Campground, where the managers, Diane and Mark Griesenauer, rescued us. Mark is a talented mechanic. He was able to pull off the wheel, examine the brake, and determine that there was an obstruction causing the brake to malfunction and overheat. He fixed it! And wouldn’t take any money for his time and expertise. Thank you!!! The couple have been relay-friendly for years, but sadly will not be the camp managers next year. The owner has sold the property and the Griesenauers are looking for a nearby location to live and work. In the meantime, we had to find a way to get our team down the road and complete the race if we could. Luckily, one of our team member’s husband, Jim Kramer, was following us and could offer some of the team shelter in his truck. He took the next three runners immediately down the road, but that left the rest of us scrambling to follow. Team “Squinge” and “Chaney’s Gang” took pity on us. They actually scrunched together very tightly for two stages so we could ride along. Finally we were reunited with our van & driver, Ed Hoke, at Exchange #19. All’s well that ended well . . . THANKs to the real friends in need on the relay course! 2015 River to River Relay / Major Division Awards Open Division 1ST 7:40:29 HAS BEENS, FROM CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. 2ND 7:52:20 UNDER PAR, FROM MARION, ILL. 3RD 8:20:53 RUNNING WITNESS, FROM PAXTON, ILL. 4TH 9:06:19 SWIM BIKE RUN ST. at the Murphysboro St. Patrick’s 5K! 2015 Illinois Marathon Friday, april 24, 2015 • Champaign-Urbana Only a few runners ahead of me. Bridget, Vera, and Nick Whiteside at Urbana Marathon Yes, the rain came down Editor’s Note: Although not a “local” race, I thought some photos from a race run the same morning as the Relay might be interesting. No rain at the start, but quickly turned into, at times a sprinkle, at times a downpour. Tori and I finished our Half-Marathon, but at 10:15 am, because of numerous lightning strikes, the Marathon was halted, leaving around 470+ runners who didn’t officially finish, although some kept running anyway. At least one runner returned the next day, took up where she had stopped, and finished alone in the Stadium. 40 • R iver to R iver Runners S ummer 2015 Marathon leaders running through Campustown. Membership Reconsidered Have you ever thought about joining the River-2-River Club, but just didn’t get around to it? Or maybe you planned to join, but then thought it wasn’t really worth it. Well, please think again. Across the country the number of runners joining a running club has swelled. This includes the serious runner as well as the casual jogger. One big “draw” is the liability insurance the Club provides. Remember, all members who participate in any club managed events (i.e. group training runs, social events, fun runs, prediction runs) have insurance coverage during the event. Club membership also includes the pre-race warm-up and wrap-up of Club sponsored races. When Pre ran, we dared to imagine—then believe—that we, too, had deep within ourselves, embers of that same extraordinary fire. Pre inspired us to accept challenge, to attempt, to strive, to risk, to endure. We fed on his unfailing strength and heart, and he, in turn, fed on our frenzy. He blazed through our lives like a shooting star, an incarnation of courage and will. There never had been an athlete like this boy who ran with the fury of an enraged bull. There never had been a sound to match the din of 10,000 berserk people, on their feet, a tempest howling “Go Pre! Go Pre!” Read more at http://running. competitor.com/2015/05/features/jeff-johnson-what-makespre-so-special_128389#lZY3bBC0uM5qsp0T.99 http://registerguard.com/rg/news/local/33105315-75/prefontaines-legacy-lives-on-four-decades-later.html.csp www.river2river.net S ummer 2015 Blast form the past...
