Recently seen on FB, Twitter, etc: An atheist, a vegan, and
a CrossFitter walk into a bar. I only know because they told
everyone within two minutes. After enjoying the humor (and
truth) of this joke, I wondered if that might be true of us
runners? Surely not! As another Twitter user commented,
You probably didn’t know there was also a marathoner until
you left and saw their rear windshield. Now that I can relate to!
As I type this, it’s snowing again and I’m really ready for
Spring. The single-digit temperatures, as well as a grouprun photo in this issue, did, however, remind me of several
Saturday morning group runs some years past, on the
good-old Tunnel Hill Trail. In fact, I dug out an old poem
about one snowy Saturday morning in December when the
thermometer hovered around zero, yet we probably had
fifteen or more eager runners that day. The poem’s certainly
not Wordsworth or Keats, but hopefully will be an enjoyable
read—located elsewhere in the Reporter.
I found a great book a while back—The Best American
Sports Writing, 2013, edited by J.R. Moehringer. It contains
several very good stories of running, including “Caballo
Blanco’s Last Run,” by Barry Bearak, taken from the New York
Times, May 20, 2012, “Marathon Man,” by Mark Singer, taken
from the New Yorker, August 6, 2012, and “Redemption of
the Running Man,” by Dan Koeppel, taken from Runner’s
World, August 2012, among others. Highly recommended.

President’s Message
The Hub is a great addition to the city
of Marion and the surrounding area. With
the opening, I feel vindicated! Upon moving to Marion in March 2000 I stopped in
the Chamber of Commerce office to ask
about local running events. I was informed
that “running and fitness weren’t considered a business.” Wow. It took us 15
years to catch up to the fitness wave that
was sweeping the country starting in
the mid-1990’s. Many communities had
caught the wave back then and capitalized on runners, cyclists, tennis players
and folks in general who value fitness.
Fitness comes in many forms. Yoga and
pilates for some, cross-fit and weight-lifting for others, swimming and strolling
for yet others. A recreation facility brings
them all together. Now that Marion has
realized that, can we strive to really catchup to other fitness communities? Will
we ever have an urban bicycle park, or a
dog park or a walking path connecting
parks? Will we have a bicycling route from
Marion to Carbondale? Will the Tunnel
Hill trail be connected to Marion via the
undeveloped Sanburn railroad bed? Can
Contents
the Hub be the
centerpiece of a
running trail in
Marion? Can The
Hub be a hub?
My two year
term as president
of the River-2by Michael Ahrens
River
Running
Club has come
to an end. I enjoyed the presidency
and expressed such in the State of the
Club speech at our banquet. (The text
of that speech is printed elsewhere in
this edition).
I’m pleased that the Board elected
Dr. Tony Miksanek at the next president.
Tony has been very active in the River2-River Running Club for a number of
years. He is a race-walker, coordinator of
the Youth & Fitness runs, Race Director of
the Springout 5K and an ambassador for
fitness in general.
Scott Ishman handed the gavel to me
in February 2013 and I now proudly pass
that gavel to Dr. Miksanek. It has been an
honor to hold, and an honor to pass on.

State of the Club
Welcome to the 34th Annual River-2-River
banquet.
Special thanks to Debbie Stanley & Dave Bond
for their efforts in setting up this banquet. Also,
thanks to Donna Ahrens for her year-long shopping to obtain all the banquet door prize gifts at a
greatly reduced cost to the Club.
I would like to briefly provide an overview of our
Club, highlighting this past calendar year. Most of
you are somewhat familiar with the River-2-River
Running Club, others perhaps not so familiar.
First, the sport of running in southern Illinois
wouldn’t be successful without our Board Members. We have 21 on the Board--all listed in Running Reporter--many of which are in attendance
tonight. Some of these Board Members also
serve as race directors. Our Club has nine races,
and they are listed on our webpage and in our in
Running Reporter.
All of our races have seen a considerable uptick
in participation levels. For example, “The Fly With
Eagles Half Marathon” had 505 registered runners
last year and we are near that number this year.
We have also seen an increase in attendance at
our monthly Club predictions runs. These are social-type runs coordinated by Jason Claunch and
hosted by various Board Members.
Runners here in southern Illinois are afforded
the opportunity to participate in various types of
runs that are available elsewhere in the country.
These included, color runs, twilight runs zombie
runs, trail runs, a straight-away-mile event, a polar
plunge, an Ice Bucket Challenge, relays, (including
the world’s shortest relay), a Boston-qualifying
marathon, and of course a number of 5k’s and 10k’.
The results of all of these events are published on
our web page and in our Running Reporter.
We have also piggy-backed running with Body
Pump, Yoga and Pilates classes, Fitness Boot Camp
& Cross Training Fitness Programs, and with fitness
classes at John A. Logan. A new recreation center
in Marion will provide in-door running, and Shawnee College now offers open enrollment in their
Ann and Ullin fitness centers.
Speech presented at our annual River-2-River Running Club
banquet by Club President Michael Ahrens
Our web page was re-designed in 2013 to be user-friendly and comprehensive. We have tweaked
it a few times last year and now we offer on-line
registration for several of our Club races.
Our Running Reporter continues to be nationally
recognized quarterly publication. And, now we
have a “blend of sorts” between the web page and
Reporter. The Reporter is available on-line thru a
web portal.
In addition to this banquet, we have a Club picnic at a local winery every July. Of course, door
prizes, all-you-can eat buffet and local musical talent are a part the picnic.
We have expanded some running routes in an
around Herrin & Marion; some of these routes listed on the national website; Localeikki. We have
met with Crab Orchard Refuge staff to consider
more running, walking and cycling routes in within the refuge.
Let me take a few moments to reflect specifically on what southern Illinois club runners have
done this past calendar year. I will undoubtedly
miss some names, but I’ll try to do my best:
We had runners participate in the “One Boston Strong Relay” across America. They were Dr.
Charles Rubright, Ashley Smith-Dahlman, Wayne
Griffith, Allison Stuphin, Kenya Garner, and Curtis
Drake. Other runners participated in the Team
Red, White & Blue “Old Glory Relay.” Ryan McKennedy is the local chapter captain of this event.
A number of Club members completed full marathons in 2014, some for the first time. They were
Warren Glad, Allison Hasler and Ldia Shevlin, and
Candy Ticer. Four local runners qualified for the
coveted Boston marathon: Jenna Griffith, Ashley
Smith-Dahlman, Olga Aranzuba, Matt Crain.
A local runner and past Runner of the Year -James Wooldridge -- won the national 3000 meter
steeplechase championship in NC.
Matt Crain and Allison Sutphin completed the six
day “Trans-Rocky” relay race in Colorado. They just
completed the Planet Adventure night/trail marathon last weekend too!
One runner ran up Pike’s Peak mountain in Colo-
rado--called the Pikes Peak ascent--and also completed the Havana, Cuba marathon. This goofy
runner must have a very understanding wife.
We are of course referring to the person making
the speech!
Two Club Officers participated in the Bloomsday
Run in Spokane, WA while attending Road Running Club of America national conference. It is the
largest road race in America.
Three Club members qualified for the National
Senior Olympics, Vera Whiteside, Shirley Fearheiley,
Michael Ahrens.
Dr. Miksanek, a Board Member, completed the
Dopey Challenge in Disneyland for the second
consecutive year. This four day events covers
48.6 miles.
There were eight Club members who competed in the Tunnel Hill Endurance Run, including Bill
Freeman who finished the 100 miler.
We also had some really, really fast times in local races. These times are listed in the “Club Honor
Roll” in our RUNNING REPORTER.
Local runners also formulated teams in the Mississippi Blues marathon and New Orleans Rock &
Roll marathon and in a RAGNER relay across the
southern tip of Florida to Key West.
It is certainly sad to note the passing of some
runners last year. Matthew Dierker, an avid runner
who participated a few times in the Fly With Eagles
1/2 Marathon died last November from injuries
sustained in a bicycle-auto accident.
Marty Gutzler, who ran in the River-2-River Relay a couple of times, recently died in a very tragic
plane crash that also took the life of his wife, one
daughter and a family relative.
And Peter Carroll, the long-time, River-2-River
Relay finisher announcer died about a year ago.
Many of you remember his Australian version of
“Welcome to Golconda” announcement as you
crossed the finish line.
And with that, we have to remind ourselves that
we all have a finishing line of sorts and we need to
enjoy the race to it.
Thank you.

Banquet Reflections
Two new awards were presented at the annual River-2-River Running
Club banquet; Race Director of the Year and Lifetime Achievement. These
awards were given in conjunction with the Female & Male Athletes of the
Year, Volunteer of the Year and Runner of the Year. Our Club seeks to
recognize the valuable contributions and achievements of those involved
in the southern Illinois running community. The banquet also featured a
presentation by an extreme endurance athlete who recently completed a
135 mile trail race in northern Minnesota. Food catered by the Great Boars
of Fire and an assortment of door prizes culminated the banquet.

To Run Or Not To Run? That Is The Question…
by Steve Middleton
Runners are like the mailman: whether rain,
wind or snow, you can count on us to run. However, we also tend to run when we shouldn’t: when
we are injured. The old motto of “no pain, no gain”
is often misinterpreted; it is meant that you have
to push yourself beyond your limits of comfort in
order to make progress. It should also only be used
in the non-injured runner because otherwise pain
is our bodies’ way of saying “don’t do that”.
There is more and more debate going on in the
medical field as to what pain actually is: Is it a sign
of physical damage or just the brain’s interpretation? Is it a warning system or is it a sign that damage has already occurred? Do treatments have a
larger physical or psychological benefit?
We walk around staring at our phones detached
from our surroundings. We run and stare at our iPods or our GPS to tell us how fast we are running.
The problem that has developed in our highspeed, technologically advanced world is that we
have lost the connection with our bodies. We can
no longer tell pain from soreness from stiffness. We
tend lump any unpleasant experience as “pain”:
STIFFNESS
Stiffness tends to improve with activity. Various
research studies show improvement in complaints
from osteoarthritis with low impact activities such
as walking, tai chi and yoga. Running can also be
incorporated but higher intensity workouts such
24 • R iver to R iver Runners
as pace runs or intervals should be avoided until
the body has been properly warmed.
SORENESS
Soreness can also improve with continued activity. The lactic acid theory holds that activity will increase blood flow to flush out waste products while
the microtrauma theory states that increased blood
flow will increase nutrition to the area to help heal
the small tears in the muscles. Regardless of the rationale, movement, especially rhythmic movements
like running, tend to improve soreness.
PAIN
Pain will worsen with further activity as continued damage occurs. The body increases blood
flow into the injured area while chemicals restrict
blood flow out; this leads to swelling. Swelling acts
as an internal bracing system to limit mobility of
the injured area to prevent further injury. The
swelling also puts pressure on the many free nerve
endings/pain receptors around the joint to create
pain in an attempt to keep you from using the
joint and further injuring it. However, we have the
mental ability to override the feedback from our
bodies and can choose to try to still workout. As
we workout, this increases blood flow to the area
which increase the swelling and the pain.
HOMEWORK
Try to reconnect with your body. Meditation
and deep breathing exercises can be integrated
S pring 2015
into your warm-up or cool-down to bring more
mindfulness to your self. Detaching from technology can also help; run without a GPS or a timer
or even a watch.
Listen to your body and let how you feel guide
your training. If you feel a condition isn’t improving, it is best to follow-up with an appropriately
trained healthcare provider. Certified athletic
trainers (ATC) are trained to evaluate and treat
most musculoskeletal injuries while understanding the demands of activity. Some physical therapists (PT) have advanced certifications in sports
(SCS) or orthopedics (OCS) while some physicians
have completed sports medicine fellowships that
allow them to understand and treat the demands
of running as well.
About the Author
Steve Middleton, MS, ATC, CSCS, CES, CKTP,
FMT serves as the Director of Rehabilitation and
Sports Medicine at Assess, Treat & Condition, an
outpatient clinic in Carbondale, Illinois. He has 15
years experience in a combination of roles treating a variety of patients from “Weekend Warriors”
to professional athletes in the NFL and with USA
Track & Field. He has developed the treatment
method called “Fascial Movement Patterning”
that he teaches to physical therapists, certified
athletic trainers and chiropractors across the
country. His treatment and teaching approach is
very hands-on from performing manual therapy
techniques to corrective exercises.

Club Membership Reconsidered
Have you ever thought about joining the River-2-River Club, but just didn’t get around to it?
Or maybe you planned to join, but then thought it wasn’t really worth it.
Well, please think again.
Across the country the number of runners joining a running club has swelled. This includes the serious runner as
well as the casual jogger. One big “draw” is the liability insurance the Club provides. Remember, all members who
participate in any club managed events (i.e. group training runs, social events, fun runs, prediction runs) have insurance
coverage during the event. Club membership also includes the pre-race warm-up and wrap-up of Club sponsored
races. Fill out and mail in the form on the back cover of this publication or visit us on the web at rivertoriver.net.

Winter Solstice
And the words we speak become
a hymn of unconscious soul-you’ve heard it before
by David Bond
Tunnel Hill Trail, 6 am, December 2002
in the sparrow’s call,
the cricket so lonely but
so beautiful in its single sad register
Sleepy, we shake off the fever of inertia
under an untouchable chandelier of stars.
Keith says a quick prayer as
and even silence feels like praise
on these mornings when
the world is simple and kind,
we stride out together in a slow peloton
into the mellow hour of a single digit,
each feeling the particular ebb and flow
when deer watch from the pines,
their eyes, dark pools of modesty and forgiveness,
when an arrow of geese targets the myth of reason,
of motion, sounds amplified, senses
coalesced into a clarity of spirit
on this snow-crusted silent trail,
when we pause at Breeden Trestle, breathless
at the fragile latticework of marsh below,
the dawn wind stirring a mélange of mists
each step further, further from the crowd,
pessimism and the sterile clock.
Then here’s the Tunnel of Vertigo,
and then—another blessing-a flame of sun touches the horizon,
for a moment earth stands still
a gradual grey eclipse into blackout where
the silhouette just ahead becomes a beacon
in a dark tide of reverberating chaos,
and we, runners, star-stunned early-risers,
burn with light ourselves-we glisten within the warm touch of morning
when you understand the reason man
first built fires before the mouths of caves.
It’s a passage of faith that you’ll get through
and the body’s fluid flight.
These mornings we take everything
and nothing for granted.
to dodge a few tree limbs, shaded sandstones,
to get into your rhythm, your tempo, while
conversations about nothing gilded in
These mornings we move placidly
into a slow healing among the goldenrod,
the fireweed and bur oaks.
the infatuation of our own laughing voices
make the miles pass too quickly,
flush faces glistening with crystals
These mornings we wear the sun in our hair,
the run in our hearts, all day long.
It’s the sort of morning to build a life on.
of ice, smoke streaming from frosted-over
eyebrows, lashes, balaclavas turned
to glazed masks of our own private Mardi Gras.

RRR Board Member
Coordinates Local “Girls
and Women in Sports
Day”Celebration
On February 11th, Marion High School celebrated National
Girls and Women in Sports Day, an event coordinated by RRR
Board member Jenna Griffith. Seventy-five girls gathered in the
MHS library to listen to the featured speaker, former SIU softball
standout Maggie Calcaterra, talk about her time at SIU and the
following years spent coaching at several area colleges. Jenna
also distributed shirts from local running events to each girl as
an inspiration that sports can and should be a life-long activity.
Lunch was provided by RRR Board member Kenya Garner, State
Farm Insurance, Wilson Realty, and McDonalds.
The Marathon as Metaphor
by Ken Starbuck
Editor’s Note: I found this article in my files and thought readers might
like to re-visit Ken’s marathon experience. Undated, it was originally in
the Reporter around 15-20 years ago.
Recently, I ran the St. Jude Marathon in Memphis and I’ve often
heard how the marathon can be used as a metaphor for other things
in life. In a 26.2 mile race, there is time to think about a lot of different
things and I found my thoughts drifting from one topic to another.
However, having worked with students that are often referred to as
“at-risk,” I kept coming back to reasons why they are “at-risk” or why
they drop out of the educational system. All my musing were soon
replaced with the marathon working quite well as a “metaphor.”
I trained for 16 weeks for this race and, with the exception of a few
pre-race jitters, I felt completely prepared for it. However, something
happened at about mile 21 that I had never previously experienced
in a race. I love to run and I’ve ran numerous races over the years, but
here, on a sunny day with perfect conditions for running, I completely
fell apart. We all go through the day with that inner voice that no
one else hears (what psychologists refer to as “self-talk”) and at that
point mine took a marked turn for the negative. Never in a race have
I wanted to just quit, sit down on the ground and lay back, but on
this day I found myself looking at different places on the ground and
sidewalk and thinking they actually looked comfortable. In the marathon world, I’ve heard runner refer to these points in a race as going
through “rough patches” or “hitting the wall.” I did both and neither
was pretty.
I had been running with a group for several miles and they began
to disappear ahead of me. By this point, I was perfectly content (and
actually hoping) they would forge ahead. I had considerably dropped
off my pace and settled into a snail’s shuffle. In my mind, I began to
imagine how nice it would be when they were out of sight and I
could just quit. I even told one of the guys I was running with “Just
go ahead. Don’t let me hold you back.” His response was “Come on.
We’re finishing this thing together.” Another runners, who had pulled

ahead, looked over his shoulder and slowed down, allowing us to
catch up. He began to offer words of encouragement and push us
forward. A veteran of many marathons, he could have easily pulled
away and been enjoying the post-race snacks by the time I crawled,
if I even did that, to the finish. Instead he chose to stick with me.
I tell this story primarily to illustrate a point. I had trained long and
hard for the race, but yet despite all my work and love of running,
I was ready to throw in the towel at mile 21. The encouragement
and help I got from other runners kept me going when I was going
through the “rough patch” and had talked myself into quitting.
This takes me back to my thoughts about those “at-risk” students. I
understand there is a myriad of factors that impact education, but at
its most basic element, education begins with a connection between
a student and his or her school and teacher. Many students, for a wide
range of reasons, may never have had positive experiences in school
or developed a love of learning. Some may never have been taught
the benefits of education and still others my receive no encouragement or support when they leave the classroom. For many, the tape
of “self-talk” messages they hear are neither hopeful nor positive.
They come to class with a tape filled with all the reasons they will
fail. Sometimes, in the course of our hectic schedules, it is easy to
lose sight of the one factor that we can control and that can make
a world of difference for students . . . the school and classroom environment. Several different studies and anecdotal stories I’ve seen and
heard over the years speak to factors that contribute to the success
of “at-risk” students. At the top of the list of these factors is student
reports that someone, almost always a teacher, stuck with them
when they were ready to “throw in the towel” or believed in them
when they didn’t believe in themselves. Sometimes, a simple word
of encouragement and pointing to a success a student has achieved
can serve as a life boat in a sea of personal doubt. While we all may
not teach in a classroom, we are all making impressions and leaving
a mark on those we encounter.
Often in a search for the best method of best incentive, we forget
that the most simple word or action can have a powerful impact. I
know it helped me set a PR. I can’t help but think that more of the
same would help others to set PR’s, whether in running or more
importantly, in life.

Fly with the Eagles. 1/2 Marathon held annually in February.
Couples Race. Welcome springtime by participating in the only
race with couples in southern Illinois.
Southern Illinois 10K. No cars, no asphalt roads, just enjoy the
beauty of Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge in the most scenic of races.
River to River Relay. One of a kind, 80-mile relay from the hills
overlooking the Mississippi River to the banks of the Ohio with
2,000 runners from US and Canada.
Herrinfest. Actually a series of races: 10K, 1-Mile Fun Run, and 5K
Walk. Culminating in the straightway mile on Park Avenue in downtown Herrin, IL.
Women Together. A special 5K run/walk designed to encourage women’s health and fitness. One of the most popular races in
the area.
Tunnel Hill Ten Mile Trail Run. This 10-mile run from Tunnel Hill
to Vienna takes the runner through tunnels and across nine trestles
on one of the most beautiful trails in the Northern Hemisphere.
Turkey Races. Another race spectacular with a 5K Run/Walk, 10K
Race, 15K Race and 1-Mile Fun Run.
Prediction Runs. Once a month runs held throughout southern
Illinois designed to teach proper pacing while encouraging the
social aspects of running together.
Special Events. These include an annual banquet in January and
picnic in July.
Youth Support. Offers a low-price student membership, honors
the area’s top male and female high school cross-country runners
with awards, and offers scholarships to assist young RRR Members
who are beginning studies in a college or university.
Walking Grand Prix. Walking competition involving a variety
of races during the year, resulting in top male and female overall
finishers.
