Harrisonburg Rotary Club Honors 68 Students

HARRISONBURG — Philosophers,
theologians and other great thinkers have
pondered the concept of ethics for centuries.

Given the vast amount of study into the topic, it
may seem a difficult concept to grasp.
“I contend that it’s not,” Peter S. Yates, editor
and general manager of the Daily News-Record,
said Thursday to dozens of local youth being
honored for ethical behavior by the Harrisonburg
Rotary Club.
Yates, the keynote speaker for Rotary’s annual
Code of Ethics awards program, quoted former
Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart to make
his point.

“Ethics is knowing the difference between what
you have a right to do and what is right to do,”
Yates relayed to the students, their families, and
fellow Rotarians.
Every May, the city club honors 68 students —
two from each school in Harrisonburg and
Rockingham County — for ethical behavior. (All
68 students and their photos were published on
a special page in Thursday’s DN-R.)
Teachers and administrators select winners
based on “truthfulness, fairness, consistency,
dependability, integrity, service to others,
friendliness, depth of commitments and
reverence.”

Yates told the students that unethical behavior
can be a slippery slope in which a series of
small choices that seem insignificant leads to
major problems.
Though the students may not realize it, he said,
they regularly make ethics decisions.
Being ethical doesn’t come down to individual
events or decisions, though, Yates added.
“It’s about how you conduct yourself on a daily
basis,” he said.
Diane Weaver, president of the club, said the
students’ behavior exemplified the Rotary’s
motto of “Service above Self.”

“The main trait ... is genuinely thinking of others
before themselves and being very selfless and
trying to build community and help others as
opposed to knocking them down,” she said. “It’s
just overall thinking of others and how they can
help others and not just looking at what’s in it for
them.”
