An Open Letter to the Community
As the holidays draw near, and we
approach the end of 2014, it is a
good time to reflect on all of the
positive changes that have taken
place at Community Memorial
Hospital. It has been quite a year!
The groundbreaking ceremony took
place on May 2nd, and from that date
forward, there has been a flurry of
activity and changes on the campus.
The initial and early days of the
project were dedicated to completion
of the excavation and utility work
outside the building. During this
time, some major changes were
taking place with the mechanical
and electrical infrastructure located
in the penthouse in the top story of
the hospital. Old mechanical systems
that dated back to 1974 were replaced
with new efficient systems that
vastly improve the air quality and
temperature inside the hospital. At
the same time, certain areas on the
second floor were being remodeled
and repurposed to accommodate
the relocation of other departments.
Work continued on the new helipad,
and it was opened for business in
October.
Footings, foundations and a concrete
floor were poured in August for the
new expansion that will house the
new Emergency Room, Laboratory,
Materials Management and
Housekeeping Departments. Then,
the steel began to come out of the
ground, and it was quite visible
how the new addition would take
shape. Roofing material has been
applied, and the brick work is almost
completed on the new section. The
work area is getting enclosed to allow
the construction crews to continue
working in this area during the winter
months. In the meantime renovation
continues on the second floor to
prepare this area for new purposes.
The new construction will expand
around to the front of the hospital
as the new entrance and lobby area
are built. It is anticipated the oldest
building on the campus will be taken
down sometime in early summer
next year which will open the way
for the construction of the new
Physical Therapy Department. The
project is scheduled to be completed
in the fall of 2015, and the new
design will greatly enhance access
and convenience for our patients and
visitors. We truly believe completion
of this project will help keep quality
healthcare close to home in Staunton.

Past...
*CMH began in the 1940’s as a vision of local coal miners who observed
numerous injuries in the many area mines but knew the nearest hospital was 20
minutes away in Litchfield. When the original hospital was constructed in 1951,
the community raised $254,000 which is equivalent to approximately $2.9 million
in today’s dollars.
Present...
*CMH, as it exists today, has 25 beds and offers acute inpatient care,
rehabilitation services, laboratory services, x-ray, cardio-pulmonary services,
physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, surgery, a 24/7 physician-staffed ER
and numerous specialty clinics. While we are incredibly fortunate to have
access to quality healthcare so close to home, the hospital is beginning to show
signs of age in various areas. As a Critical Access Hospital, there are very
strict regulations with which the hospital must comply that are very different
from when the hospital was constructed.
Future...
* While we are proud of what we are and all that has been accomplished, we
must think about what we can become and work towards the future. The future
CMH includes updated infrastructure, a new emergency department, new
laboratory, new physical therapy department, and a new registration area with
enhanced patient confidentiality. Our goal is to provide better, more up-to-date
care close to home.
Community Memorial Hospital
is one of only two hospitals in
Macoupin County. It is the second
largest employer in Staunton with
approximately 150 employees. The
renovation project will generate
approximately 400 temporary
construction jobs. The timeline
for the construction project is
approximately 14-16 months.
The total budget for the hospital’s renovation project is $14 million,
and funding is broken down as follows:
• $8 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture
• $3 million from First National Bank in Staunton
• $2 million from the hospital’s reserves
• $1 million from the Keeping Healthcare Close to Home Capital Campaign.
*It is important to note that because Community Memorial is a not-for-profit organization,
they do not receive any city or county tax support.
Staunton Clinic has been serving the health care needs
of Staunton and the surrounding communities since 1994.
Dr. Rajneesh Jain (Board Certified in Internal Medicine
and Orthopedics), Dr. Manish Mathur (Board Certified in
Internal Medicine), Dr. Bryan Siegfried, (Board Certified
in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics), and Tonya Darr,
FNP, offer a wide range of services to all age groups from
newborn to geriatric care.
Staunton Clinic provides well child examinations,
immunizations for children and adults, DOT physicals,
sports and school physicals, well woman examinations,
minor surgeries for skin conditions, cryotherapy, joint
injections and treatment of simple fractures.
We offer same day appointments for most emergencies and late hours every Wednesday. Staunton Clinic
is also open most Saturdays. Our team of providers and staff is proud to offer high quality primary care to
Staunton and the surrounding communities.

Influenza: A virus more menacing than Ebola
With all of the attention focused by the news networks on Ebola, there is the perception that Ebola is the
virus about which we should be concerned. However, only a handful of Ebola cases have presented in the
United States with only two that were contracted within the country. The true viral killer in the United
States is influenza or the “flu.” While Ebola requires significant bodily fluid contact to be transmitted,
influenza is readily transmitted through tiny airborne droplets from coughing and sneezing. In one case,
a single airline passenger with influenza managed to infect every single passenger on his flight. Influenza
annually results in complications requiring hospitalization for 200,000 and kills an average of 25,000
Americans. Because influenza is prone to mutation, severity of the infection can vary year-to-year and
sometimes lead to severe outbreaks like the “Spanish Flu” that killed nearly 600,000 Americans in 1918.
As antibiotic therapy has no effect on influenza--prevention of the transmission of the flu is vital. A safe
and effective measure against influenza is vaccination. However, as the flu virus mutates easily, vaccines
must be reformulated each season against a mixture of virus strains that are predicted to be predominant
for the year. Depending on how accurate these predictions are, vaccination effectiveness is usually in the
range of 50-80%. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the influenza vaccination to everyone
over the age of 6 months; however, those with chronic illnesses such as COPD, asthma, heart failure, and
diabetes are at especially high risk of influenza related complications and benefit the greatest from receiving
the flu vaccine. The viruses in the flu shot are inactivated (killed), so it is not possible to get the “flu” from
the influenza vaccination. As the vaccination takes approximately two weeks to begin providing protection,
it is best that people get vaccinated early so they are protected before influenza begins spreading in their
community.

At Community Memorial Hospital, we
understand there are times when a patient
no longer needs the acute care they receive
in the hospital, yet they may not feel strong
enough to return home. For those patients,
we offer our Transitional Care Program.
This program is designed to provide
patients with individualized, in-hospital
care, and physical rehabilitation to help
them reach an optimal level of functioning.
This type of care is designed for patients
who are discharging from acute care but
still need temporary, additional care that
cannot be provided at home or in a longterm care facility. Our goal is to provide the
bridge that transitions the patient from the
hospital to the home. For more information
