These measurements include sufficient yardage for any of the template techniques, including using templates to cut pieces for foundation piecing. If you elect to cut your fabrics using the larger sizes in the PRECUTTING GUIDES FOR FOUNDATIONS, you may need to purchase additional yardage to accommodate this style of piecing. 2203 Dominguez Street Bldg K3 Torrance, CA 90501 (800) 422-5426 • For a shop near you visit www.rjrfabrics.com Moon Glow by Jinny Beyer © 2000, 2009, 2012 RJR Fabrics General Information (r02-2012) - Page 4 of 8 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS INTRODUCTION This Jinny Beyer block-of-the-month quilt has been designed as a patchwork course for intermediate to advanced level quilters. The blocks each month have been geared to teach a variety of basic skills and become more advanced as the months progress. Quilters will build on the knowledge and skills they learn from each block until even the seemingly more complex patterns become easy to assemble. Included in the techniques that participants learn are rotary cutting, strip piecing, joining four corners, joining eight corners, paper piecing, setting in, working with curves and much more. The blocks for this quilt can be constructed using a variety of the following methods of construction: hand piecing, machine piecing, piecing with freezer paper templates, or piecing onto a foundation. The fabrics used in Moon Glow are all from the Quilters Palette by Jinny Beyer for RJR Fabrics. The shading of the colors produces a “moon glow” that gives the quilt a rich quality. Each of the compasses is named after the seas of the moon. GETTING STARTED • • • • Wash and press all fabrics. For machine piecing, test your 1/4" seam accuracy. To achieve accurate 1/4" seams, adjust machine marking or needle position if necessary. Press seams in the direction that creates the least bulk and/or towards the darker fabric. TEMPLATES • As printed, all templates include a 1/4" seam allowance. Dashed lines are sewing lines; solid lines are cutting lines. A & AR Block 1 RA & A 1 kcolB • Not all printers/copiers reproduce perfectly. Test print this page, and check that the Template Size Check below measures the correct size. This is critical to ensuring that your pieces will fit together correctly and your blocks will finish the correct size. • For machine piecing, trace or photocopy template shapes for each block. Templates may be transferred or glued to template plastic. For hand piecing, trace on the solid line to create templates that include the 1/4" seam allowance. Use the template to draw the sewing line, or include the seam allowances and trace on the solid lines. For freezer paper method, trace templates onto freezer paper using a freezer paper template technique. Trace and cut on the dashed lines. Several templates need to be reversed for tracing and/or cutting to complete the blocks, i.e. - A (normal) and AR (reversed). They are indicated on the templates and in the individual instructions. All templates should be placed on the wrong side of the fabric for tracing and/or cutting. Several of the template shapes are used in more than one block. If a template shape has been used before, it will be noted in the individual block instructions. • • • • • A & AR Block 1 Template Size Check This box should measure 2 inches square. If the box does not measure 2", your templates/foundations will not be the correct size. If you are printing at home, be sure your printer is set to print at 100% with “no scaling”. Moon Glow by Jinny Beyer General Information (r02-2012) - Page 5 of 8 HAND PIECING • • • • Mark the sewing line onto the wrong side of each fabric piece. In preparation for sewing, pin two fabric pieces together. To make sure the drawn lines are perfectly aligned, use pins at the beginning and end of the seam line. Also place pins at intervals along the seam line to help hold pieces together securely for stitching. Sew fabric pieces together in the order indicated in the individual instructions. Stitch on the seam line using a running stitch. To keep the thread from pulling, stitch additional backstitches every couple of inches. Secure each end with a fastening stitch, i.e. knot or backstitch. MACHINE PIECING • • • • • On the wrong side of each fabric piece, mark 1/4" intersections at all corners. In preparation for sewing, pin two fabric pieces together. Use pins at the beginning and end of the seam line, pinning through the 1/4" intersections marked on both fabrics. To help hold pieces together securely for stitching, place pins along the seam line . Using the appropriate marking on your sewing machine to accomplish a 1/4" seam, stitch along the seam line. Sew fabric pieces together in the order indicated in the individual instructions. For most seams you will sew from cut edge to cut edge. However, because many of these blocks require set-in seams, care must be taken to determine when the seam should be ended at the 1/4" intersection markings. If a pivot or set-in is needed at either end of the seam, it is best to begin and/or end the seam at the marked intersection, backstitching for a few stitches to secure the seam. FREEZER PAPER PIECING • • • • • Trace and cut out freezer paper template pieces and press onto the wrong side of fabric. Cut out shapes, leaving 1/4" of fabric for seam allowance around each template shape. In preparation for sewing, pin two fabric pieces together. Use pins at the beginning and end of the seam line, pinning at the corners of the freezer paper templates on both pieces of fabric. To help hold pieces together securely for stitching, place pins along the seam line. Stitch along the edges of the freezer paper. Leave the freezer paper templates in place until the block has been completed. Sew fabric pieces together in the order indicated in the individual instructions. FOUNDATION PIECING TH -# 3 2 Using a slightly shorter stitch length than usual, sew on the printed line. Stitch several stitches beyond the seam line at each end. Using a warm, dry iron, press fabric #2 completely to the side, being careful to avoid any pleats that will affect accuracy. Fold the foundation on the line for the next seam to be sewn. Using this fold as a guide, trim the fabric along the fold, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. Continue adding fabric pieces to the foundation by repeating these same steps until all numbered areas have been covered with fabric. Cut off excess fabric by trimming 1/4" away from the outermost solid line along each edge. Place two pieced sections right sides together. Place pins at the beginning and end of the seam lines on both pieces. Sew on the line, stitching from cut edge to cut edge. Sew pieces together in the order indicated in the individual instructions. This will allow for lengthwise grain, 1 piece borders. Otherwise WOF cuts can be made later. See Month 12 pattern for specifics! FRAME Pick your passion! This pattern includes templates for machine or hand piecing. There are also freezer paper foundation pages and standard foundation piecing pages. Use which ever technique suits you best to accomplish this beautiful block! Month 1 (r02.2012) - Page 1 of 6 Directions- Freezer Paper Foundation Method. 1. Print copies of the freezer paper foundation pages onto the dull side of 8-1/2" x 11" freezer paper. Using paper cutting scissors, cut out each shape directly on the dashed lines. Be careful not to add any distance past those lines or your shapes will be too large. A Shown right side up (RSU). B B B B AT THE CUTTING MAT: Do not mark the seam allowances around the paper shapes. Cut each shape out leaving an exact 1/4" seam allowance on all sides. This is accurately done with a square see-thru ruler with a clear 1/4" outer edge marking and rotary cutter. Use the template shapes from page 5 to trim the elongated points of the shapes. This will make piecing much easier! 3. Sew the A, AR, C and CR shapes together. To help line up the match points push a straight pin through the match point on the CR foundation to the corresponding match point on the A foundation. Carefully pin to secure. Repeat for both the starting and the ending match points. Sew together using a 1/4" seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and ending of each addition. AR C CR A AR C CR A AR Make 4 Make 4 B 4. AT THE IRONING BOARD: Place the shiny side of the corresponding freezer paper shapes onto the wrong side of the fabrics. Space the shapes so there is plenty of room on all sides of each for a 1/4" seam allowance. Using a hot, dry iron press the shiny side of the freezer paper shapes onto the wrong side of each corresponding fabric. This will temporarily bond the paper to the fabric. Sew the AR units to the remaining long side of the B shapes. Press. 7. Sew the units into two half blocks. Press. Sew the half blocks together forming one Sea of Nectar block. Measures 11-3/4" sq. When viewing from the back, the seam allowances should all be pressed in a clockwise direction. This has been an aid in making sharp points and accurate matches. If during the piecing process you wish to remove some of the foundations remember this rule: Always leave the foundations that are on the outside of the units/block attached to the fabric for exterior support until piecing is complete. Any interior foundations (foundations that are sewn on all sides) can be removed if needed to make the best match of points/seams. Remove all foundation papers. Press well without sliding the iron. Placing a cloth on top of the block before pressing will help avoid striking a shine on bulky areas of the piecework. Trim the outer edges of the block if needed to bring it to an 11-3/4" x 11-3/4" measurement. 8. Sew the frame squares and rectangles together Press. Make 2 9. Sew a rectangle to each side of the block. Press. Sew the square/rectangle strips to the top and bottom of the block. Press. Measures 14-1/4" sq. Month 11 (r02.2012) - Page 1 of 6 The last compass block in this series is the traditional Mariner’s Compass pattern. It has twice as many points as the last four blocks. By paper piecing the block can be constructed with accuracy. Since the compass block sets into the background, this month’s block will also include a lesson on piecing curves. By now you should have the knowledge and confidence to proceed with any block of your choice. Directions- Template method. 1. Make templates. Cut fabric out. 2. Sew eight identical units as shown. Press in the direction indicated by the arrows. Diagram 1 Make 8 3. Because the center of this block has set-in seams, when sewing the small triangles onto the octagon, start and stop stitching at all seam intersections. Not stitching into the seam allowance will allow for easier piecing at the pivot points along these seams. 4. Sew the units into two half blocks. Press. Fold each A fabric piece in half and match the center of the curved edge with the tip of C on the completed quarter compass. Pin A securely in place along the curve before stitching. Twelve blocks are needed for the quilt. Six blocks are colored one way, and six are mirror images of the first. Take care to look at the diagrams in terms of the coloring of the block and the placement within the quilt. The lesson this month is to learn basic rotary cutting and strip piecing techniques. Directions1. Using the measurements in Chart I, cut one strip of each color. These strips will then be sewn together and cut to create the nine patch and log units needed to complete these blocks. 2. Cut the Fabric 24 into 21 strips that measure 1 3/4" x 23" . 3. Sew one Fabric 24 strip onto each side of the following fabric strips (number refers to Block Area): Block Area 8 - Fabric 19 Block Area 9 - Fabric 3 Block Area 12 - Fabric 17 Block Area 13 - Fabric 4 Block Area 16 - Fabric 21 Block Area 17 - Fabric 8 Block Area 20 - Fabric 22 Block Area 21 - Fabric 7 4. Cut each of these units into 12 strips that are 1-3/4" wide. 5. Cut 12 strips from each of the following fabrics. The strips will need to be 1-3/4" by the width of the original strip. i.e. #6 would be 1-3/4" x 4-1/4". (Number refers to Block Area): Block Area 6 - Fabric 16 Block Area 7 - Fabric 10 Block Area 10 - Fabric 15 Block Area 11 - Fabric 11 Block Area 14 - Fabric 26 Block Area 15 - Fabric 12 Block Area 18 - Fabric 25 Block Area 19 - Fabric 13 4 6. To aid when stitching these blocks together, you may find it helpful to label by fabric name and/or number each group of 2 strips created in above Steps 4 and 5. 3 7. Sew one Fabric 24 strip onto each side of the 5 following fabric strips (number refers to Block Area): Block Area 4 - Fabric 20 Block Area 5 - Fabric 18 8. Sew one Fabric 24 strip between the following two fabric strips (number refers to Block Area): Block Area 2 - Fabric 1 Block Area 3 - Fabric 9 9. Sew the ASSEMBLY DIAGRAM WOF strips short end to short end. Trim to listed length above. Always 1 measure your quilt’s pieced center and make adjustments in the border 2 3 lengths as needed. 4 5 2. Sew the seven borders strips together, offsetting each strip by 1 3/4" to 6 create a stepped strip unit as shown in the Assembly Diagram. Sew 4 7 sets of border strips (one for each side of the quilt). 3. To ensure for a perfectly symmetrical quilt, measure across the center of the quilt; then measure and mark the same measurement on each border unit. 4. Indicate the ends of the line by making a mark or placing a pin at each end. 5. Find the center of the pinned or marked line on each border unit, and the center of each side of the quilt. 6. Pin the center of the border to the center of the quilt. To find the necessary length of the borders, place one of the border units across the middle of the quilt (measuring across the middle as opposed to the ends is more accurate). 7. Place a pin on each edge of the border unit where it meets the edge of the quilt. 8. Using the first border unit as a guide, mark the same length on each of the other border units. 9. Pin the midpoint of one of the border units to the middle point of one of the edges of the quilt. 10. Pin the corner next, making sure to place the pin at the point where the seam allowances would meet. Continue pinning across the edge of the quilt easing in any fullness (due to the stretch along Moon Glow by Jinny Beyer Month 12 - Page 5 of 6 the seams, the edge of the quilt is slightly wider than the center; any extra fullness must be eased in to ensure a perfectly square quilt). 11. Sew the remaining three borders in the same manner. MITERING 1. To miter the edges, use a 90/45/45/degree triangle or a ruler with a 45 degree angle marked, as shown in the Mitering Diagram. MITERING DIAGRAM 2. Position the edge of the ruler or paper so that it creates a line that goes from the corner of the compass block to the outer edge of the quilt. Be careful to check that ruler lines and/or edge of paper are parallel to the edge of the border. 3. Fold and press, or draw a line to mark the 45 degree angle. 4. Pin and stitch along this miter line, being careful to match seams of each border strip along the seam line. 5. Trim off excess fabric along seam line, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. Press. BASTING AND QUILTING 1. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing, and baste all three layers together. 2. Quilt the layers together using a design of your choice. BINDING 1. Trim off excess fabric and batting. 2. Make double fold binding using Fabric 24. For straight grain binding, cut 10 strips that measure 2-1/2" x 40", for bias binding, cut a 32-1/2" square; then use the circular bias, binding technique to cut the tube into 2-1/2" strips. 3. Stitch strips together end to end using diagonal seams. 4. Trim off excess seam allowance and press all seams open. 5. Press strip in half lengthwise, right side facing out. 6. Measure across the quilt to determine the binding length needed for each side. In order to keep the quilt square and flat, use the same measurement for all four sides. 7. Mark the measurement, then pin the binding in BINDING DIAGRAM place. 8. Stitch folded binding to edge of quilt using a 3/8" seam allowance. 9. Miter corners and finish the ends as shown in the Binding Diagram. 10. Turn folded edge of binding to the back of the quilt and stitch in place. Moon Glow by Jinny Beyer Month 12 - Page 6 of 6
