SUNDAY OF THE DIVINE MERCY APRIL 12, 2015 Mass Intentions Today’s Gospel Reflection 1st Reading: Acts 4:32-35 * Psalm 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24 * 2nd Reading: 1 Jn 5:1-6 * Gospel: Jn 20:19-31 OF ONE HEART AND MIND Reading about the faith of the early Christian believers can be a real inspiration to those of us who have been Christians for a long time, as well as for those who are newly baptized. Can you imagine people of this world being “of one heart and mind” as was the first community of believers? Today’s First Letter of John seems to hold the key to how this can be accomplished. Keeping God’s commandments and loving all of God’s children seems to be the start of being “of one heart and mind.” We live in a world that stresses differences — differences among religions, among races, between genders, and among economic classes. Today we are summoned to focus on what we all share in common on this fragile planet of ours. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. . Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? — 1 Juan 5:5 CHRIST IS HERE Christ departed from our sight that we might return to our heart, and there find him. MICHAEL CHURCH PARADISE HILLS, SAN DIEGO Dear Parishioners and friends, On April 30, 2000, St. Pope John Paul II declared that “this Second Sunday of Easter will also be called ‘Divine Mercy Sunday.” PASTORS’ MESSAGE During the course of His revelations to St. Faustina, Jesus asked on numerous occasions that a feast day be dedicated to the Divine Mercy and that this feast be celebrated on the Sunday after Easter. St. Pope John Paul II granted a universal Feast of Mercy on the Second Sunday of Easter, as requested by Our Lord to St. Faustina. Jesus said to St. Faustina: “Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on this day will be granted complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (Diary 300). Jesus promised that “The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain the complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (Diary 699). He went on to say, “I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy.” (Diary 1109). We encourage everyone to take advantage of this incredible promise. Today, April 12th, the Image of The Divine Mercy will be on display in our church for veneration. The 1:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated in honor of The Divine Mercy. There will be priests to hear Confessions from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for Adoration immediately after the 7:30 p.m. Mass. Priests will also be available to hear Confessions from 8:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. “When you approach the confessional, know this, that I Myself am waiting there for you. I am only hidden by the priest, but I Myself act in your soul. Here the misery of the soul meets the God of mercy.” (Diary 1602) Make your confession before Me. The person of the priest is only a screen. Never analyze what sort of a priest that I am making use of; open your soul in confession to Me, and I will fill it with My Light.” (Diary 1725) Yes, the first Sunday after Easter is the Feast of Mercy, “but there must also be deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors by deed, word, and prayer, always and everywhere. You must not shrink from this or try to absolve yourself from it. In these three degrees is contained the fullness of mercy, and it is an unquestionable proof of love for Me. By this means a soul glorifies and pays reverence to My mercy.” (Diary 742). Pope Francis has declared a special Jubilee Year, a Year of Mercy. The Holy Year of Mercy will begin on December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, and continue through November 20, 2016, the feast of Christ the King. Pope Francis said that he had been thinking of “how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness to mercy.” He said that the Holy Year of Mercy was intended as a step in that direction—on what he called a “journey of conversion”. Manny Ediza AMOUNT OF DONATION $____________ Page 3 SUNDAY OF THE DIVINE MERCY APRIL 12, 2015 Blessings from St. Michael Academy to the St. Michael Parish Community! Last month, I shared the news that 17 of our Junior High students were accepted to enter the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair. Due to an oversight by the screeners, we actually had 20 projects enter the competition! Here are the results: One - 1st Place, Five - 2nd Place, Eleven - 3rd Place, and Three - 4th Place. In addition, we had three Professional Society Awards: John Estrada (1st Place Winner) was recognized by General Atomics Sciences Education Foundation Advanced Material Technology, Cameron Armas (2nd Place Winner) was recognized by American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics - San Diego Section, and Aysa May Dungca (3rd Place winner) was recognized by the San Diego County Water Authority. While we recognize the efforts of all of our students, we must also recognize the parents and teachers who kept our students motivated and on task. Thanks be to God for our SMA family! Enrollment/registration is an ongoing process at St. Michael Academy. We are a Kindergarten through 8th Grade school. Call the office and schedule a tour of the Academy. Culture of Life Religious Education Buena Algoso (619)470-2292 GOD’S WORD TODAY. Easter changes everything. Listen carefully to today’s Gospel passage, and notice the fact that this account includes Jesus breathing on his disciples. The same Greek word for breathing used in this passage also appears at the very beginning of the Bible. There, in Genesis, the Lord God breathes upon Adam, giving him life. In the Gospel passage, through this act of breathing on the disciples, the risen Jesus gives them new life. What does new life in the resurrected Christ look like? We need only look at the first reading to discover what a community of believers acts like when its members are living lives in the risen Christ. As we prepare to listen to the scriptures, let us pray that the breath of God will fill us with new life and help us live like the early Christian communities, when there was no needy person among them.
