t appears that we have made it through
the winter. I know that you all are hoping for a good season of boating. There
are lots of planned cruises this year as well as
chances to just get out on your own. Have
fun this boating season!
Old batteries can be left on the concrete pad next to the
used oil tank in the storage yard. Please don’t leave them
on the dock or in the parking lot. Also, our trash company
will not take the dumpsters if appliances are put in them.
There is an extra charge as well as overwhelming the available space.
Our Wednesday lunches are doing well. We serve from
11:30 until 1:30. The bar is also open. We are looking
forward to nice weather and seating on the patio. If you
have a party over 10, please let me know. It would be a
good idea to set a menu for any large group.

IN MEMORY — Marie Hauge
M
arie burst onto the PYC
scene in 1972 when the
Hauges joined the club
with their Cal 25, the Windsong
II. A few years later the family
moved in right up the street on
Marine Dr. They traded up to her
beloved Cal 33, the Rowdy Lady
II, which was moored for years on
the headwalk between B and C
rows. Marie always referred to the
Rowdy Lady as HER boat following a family joke. She beat Art to
the punch and bought it out from
under him with a $30 down payment and gave it to him as a present. Rowdy Lady’s racing career
soon followed and nobody was as
boisterous and as dedicated a crew
member and first mate as Marie.
Many happy years at the club and
on the river followed, as well as numerous trips up the coast to points
north... most notably to Desolation Sound and many memorable
visits to Jack Berglund’s cabin
on Quartz Bay. There were several Swiftsure races as well as the
1980 Victoria to Maui race. Marie did not crew on that one, but
was waiting in Maui to greet her
boat (and husband and crew) in
style. For all the cruising, racing
and parties, Marie is most noted
at the club for her famous piano
top performance, singing her special PYC version of “Put the Blame
on Maime” at the 1980 Shipwreck
Follies. Her memorial reception
filled the ballroom and flagroom.
Her Rowdy Lady II is still moored
at the club in slip D2.
Next to her deep faith in God, and
love for her husband and children,
Marie’s great passion was art. She
received the Educational Leadership Award from Gonzaga University’s School of Education for the
art enrichment program she developed called “Art HAS It,” (Art
History Appreciation and Service),
which gives children and adults
access to their cultural heritage
through reproductions of masterpieces from the great museums of
the world. Through Art HAS It,
Marie created university, corporate
and museum partnerships, so that
participants in the program could
be exposed to collections of hundreds of important works of art in
an inspiring and non-threatening
manner.The Art HAS It program
is now used in preschools, elementary and secondary schools, as well
as universities. Programs extend
from the West to the East Coast.
Among other honors, Marie was
recognized as the Mother of the
Year for the State of Washington
in 2005, and was invited to be a
member of the Presidential Advisory Commission at the University
of Portland.
We will always remember what she
gave to our lives, and cherish the
fun-filled memories.

concrete floating docks in early May and
started the creation of a new facility for PYC
member’s use along Tomahawk Island.
The new docks stretch from midway between N and M rows, to a point midway
between L and K rows. The next major
move will be in October when the old and
somewhat decrepit L row will be transformed into 350 feet of concrete docks.

The concrete dock sections were transferred
from trucks to the water at Schooner Creek
Boat Works and towed to the PYC moorage. Club members disconnected all utilities from the old dock. PYC Dockmaster

club property at Tomahawk Island.

lot of fun for golfers of all levels. We
play at Lake Oswego Golf Course, a pretty
Par 3 municipal course located at 17525
Stafford Road.

On the other Tuesdays it is Ladies’ Day.

We are planning to have an old-fashioned Carnival as
part of the entertainment for our Birthday Party, and
of course no Carnival would be complete without a
Cake Walk! To do this, however, we need help from
all of you. If you would please bring a cake, pie, plate

really appreciate it! These will be given to the winners
of the Cake Walk, so they need to be on/in disposable
containers. Also, given the nature of the Cake Walk,

T
he 2008 Portland Yacht Club Centennial Roster and Yearbook is now
available for members to pick up at
the club office. Additional books are available for $10 each.
The Roster and Yearbook committee
worked diligently on this year’s book.
Gayle Timmerman and the advertising
sales team of Betsy Leonardi, Wylie Grabish, Sandra Rose and Shirley Landels secured new advertisers this year and also met
the team’s target sales goal. Steven Callihan
assisted with the Members Commemorative Ad production. Adrianne Peterson and
Joan Johnson spent countless hours searching through the many photographs of the
2007 events for the Year in Review photo
pages. Our thanks to the club photographers and members for submitting the
many photos. Sue Miller took on the task
of coordinating and proofing the member
section and worked with Vice-Commodore
and Closed Moorage Chair Jerry Miller on
the revisions to both the Fleet and Reciprocal sections. Julie Reagan was instrumental in making sure incoming update
forms, photos and emails were submitted
for changes in the new book. Once again,
this year the club was fortunate to employ
the talents of Kathy Lyons, who provided
the graphic production services.
Please be sure to make an effort to thank
the advertisers, especially the member advertisers, who, year after year, continue to
support PYC.
The Committee hopes the membership
will enjoy the Centennial book, not only
during 2008, but for years to come.
COOKOUTS
J
une will hopefully cooperate with some
warm weather allowing us go get out
on the patio for our two cookouts this
month. June 13th, will be a good kickoff
for Father’s Day weekend. June 27th is getting close to July 4th, time to break out the
fire works? We have been having a great
response to our request for early sign up
(before noon on the prior Thursday), and
we thank you. We will continue to have
drawings for two free cookouts for the early
sign up folks. We will also continue to be
creative with themes and entertainment.

RECIPROCAL REPORT
E
ach year, as part of the Roster updating process, the information we have
on reciprocal moorage is verified and
updated. Starting last year, we are providing some basic information in the Roster
on most clubs listed–general location, contact persons and phone numbers, facilities
available, hours of operation, etc. Hopefully, this information will prove useful.
Currently, we have reciprocal agreements
with over 130 yacht clubs from Alaska to
Southern California, even a few in Hawaii.
A few clubs on the list do not have moorage facilities; these agreements are purely
for social reasons.
Most of the information on established
reciprocal agreements regarding facilities
available to guests comes from letters we
exchange with these clubs annually. Other
information comes from our members who
visit a club and note a change in what is
offered.
In cases where no agreement exists, we
send a letter seeking to establish a formal
relationship. In this process, there are the
clubs that, for whatever reason, decline our
offer of reciprocal privileges. These are:
Gibsons, Fidalgo, Anacortes, Comox Valley, Ladysmith, Lopez Island, Maple Bay,
Sequim Bay, Shilshole Bay, South Sound
Cruising Club, Swinomish and Royal Vancouver yacht clubs. The Columbia River
YC has been removed from our list due to
their insurance requirements that we do
not meet.
Frankly, I’m amazed at the number of clubs
in the Puget Sound and British Columbia
that are willing to offer reciprocal moorage
to a club on the Columbia River, one their
members will probably never visit by boat.
Our members that cruise these northern
waters are getting the better of the deal
here.

drop a line out in front of the club
A final thought: Many clubs will grant you
moorage privileges and access to club facilities even though they have declined to
establish a formal arrangement. Bottom
line, it doesn’t hurt to ask. Most, if they
have room for you, will grant you the courtesy.

he Stag Cruise was blessed with perfect weather. We tied up 43 boats
with 106 members and guests.
Jim Butler orchestrated the food and had
a band of eager volunteers around him.
Fantastic fried oysters on Friday got the
party off to a great start. I personally didn’t
think I was much of an oyster eater but
changed my mind after these morsels. A
few at Vic’s Texas Holdem table had them
delivered. Vic left the table by morning to
prepare mouthwatering cinnamon French
toast. Saturday had the usual group dingy
over to Ridgefield for lunch. That night we
gorged ourselves with 100 pounds of prime
rib. The meals were topped off on Sunday morning with Jim and his trained team
making to-order omelets for everyone. If
it weren’t for the volunteers, Jim feels we
would be eating hot dogs and hamburgers.
We had many first time boats, Bo brought
the only girl and 10 of the guests were college folks who left early Sunday to graduate
from college. They never came back.

I would also like to thank Carolyn Bishop for Chairing the Ladies’ Dinner. The
Carousel theme was spectacular. Carolyn
brought a few pieces of her private collection to view and our guest speaker provided us with a history of the Carousel and
what is being done to preserve these artistic
animals. Jan put on an excellent salmon
dinner.
Since mid-February, the Multnomah
County Sheriff ’s Office River Patrol has
been actively visiting Oregon moorages
checking for current registration stickers.
Failure to have a current sticker can result
in a fine of $97 for failure to register your
boat and a fine of $242 for failure to display a current registration sticker. Arriving by water, the deputies are walking the
docks and checking on registrations.
Our next big event will be Fourth of July.

and the committee out. We also need volunteers to assist. Please contact me if you
can help. It is a great way to get to know
one another.
A recent survey showed that 30-40% of
the boats in the moorage are not current
or not displaying any registration.
