Star Report Spring 2014
Logan enjoys the new air hockey table generously donated to Brent’s Place
in memory of Caitlin Kemler, past Brent’s Place resident and Mercury employee.
Even though the first four months of 2014 have come and gone, I still feel like the year has just begun. The pages that follow
are meant to update you on all of the exciting things going on at Brent’s Place right now, but I thought I would take a few
minutes to reflect on 2013. I am not sure how we managed to squeeze even more into a year, but 2013 was perhaps our
busiest yet. Brent’s Place served more than 120 families during 233 visits throughout the year, supporting more families than
ever before. This accomplishment alone would be something to be proud of, but once again our staff, volunteers and donors
helped us raise our level of support in the form of new programs and activities. To be frank, I am astounded every year to see
what we are able to accomplish in support of the very special people we serve thanks to the sincere dedication of our team.
As we continue to explore what the future may hold, our staff and board spent a great deal of time in 2013 reflecting on
who we are as an organization and what it is that we do best. To that end, we are analyzing the continually expanding need
for our services and working with our hospital partners to determine where we can help and how we can make the biggest
impact. We will certainly have more news in 2014 about our plans for the future. When I
look back on the faces and personalities that graced our halls in 2013, it is clear to me that
we should do everything in our power to help more families during these difficult times.
All it takes is a hug from Ginger, a little hide and go seek with Parklen, or time at the dinner
table with Izaac and his family to realize that we have created a place unlike any other and
we are so fortunate to be here.
I thank you all for giving of yourselves to help make this all possible. We are so fortunate
to have you all on our side. I look forward to working with you all again in 2014, and I am
excited to see where the journey takes us this year!
Sean Meyerhoffer
Executive Director, Brent’s Place
Quote from Family:
Being the mother of a critically ill
child can be all consuming…you
lose sight of who you are. I feel
so blessed to have been given the
opportunity to live in a place such
as Brent’s…a place where we were
loved…a place where we met
new friends…a place where we
met families that were struggling
through this medical world…a
place where we saw many sad
endings…but happy ones as
well…a place where a family can
be a family, in spite of a difficult
circumstance… a place where
they can breathe… a place to
heal… a place to live… a place
to call home when their home
is so far away.

Letter from Walt Raynor
Walt Raynor – retired owner and founder of Brown/
Raynor Corp. has served on the Brent Eley Board of
Directors since 2010. As a member of the Fundraising
Committee and Board Development Committee, Walt’s
ongoing commitment to the families who call Brent’s
Place home is a significant and humbling example of the
organization’s volunteer leadership. As Walt serves his
last year on the Board of Directors we are so grateful
for his generosity and dedication to Brent’s Place.
Dear Friends of Brent’s Place:
S
ome 25 years ago I became acquainted with Donn and Linda Eley, Brent’s
parents and founders of Brent’s Place. I learned about Brent’s cancer diagnosis
that came out of nowhere at age 13 in 1987, his various and numerous treatments
during a lengthy hospital stay, his ultimate need for a bone marrow transplant
which was to take place in Iowa City, Iowa, and finally, his passing after a more than
6 month battle, still in Iowa City.
D
onn and Linda’s loss of their son was of course indescribably painful, but what
also struck me about their story was the thought of Brent and his family having
to travel to a totally unfamiliar and faraway city for his lifesaving treatment, at a
complete loss as where to stay or how to begin to best deal with the harrowing
circumstance at hand. There was no coaching or support system, just a “trial and
error” type existence while witnessing Brent’s struggle.

S
ometime after Brent’s death I was fortunate to be able to lend a hand as Donn
and Linda began their quest to honor Brent’s courage and spirit by raising funds
to support pediatric cancer programs. I participated as the Eleys and a growing band
of supporters took their efforts to where Brent’s Place is today, a modern 16 unit
“safe-clean” apartment building near Children’s Hospital Colorado accommodating
up to 5 people in each apartment. With employees and volunteers on hand to offer
meals and various support programs to help ease the frightening burdens facing
these out of town families, it is most certainly a far cry from Iowa City!
I
’ve viewed my Board membership as a special opportunity to discover and be
involved with the inner-workings of the organization—a wonderful culmination
of my years of helping with the development of the Brent’s Place of today. I’m
honored and humbled to work alongside such compassionate and hardworking
board members; these men and women offer an array of complementing talents
and styles, and are clearly results-driven for the good of our families, along with the
overall current and future stability of our organization. Anything I have personally
done with and for Brent’s Place is certainly small when measured against the
enormous sense of gratification I’ve enjoyed during my Board experience.
Sincerely, Walt Raynor

Patrick Finney and Finn Real Estate are dedicated supporters
of Brent’s Place. After past event sponsorships of both the

to dedicate their efforts beyond events and become a
Corporate Social Responsibility Partner with Brent’s Place.
With a contribution of $25,000 Finn Real Estate will support
Brent’s Place events throughout the year in addition to
directly supporting family stays!
Finn Real Estate's Partnership with Brent's Place is a
significant investment in the organization and its support of
families going through the most difficult days of their lives.
The Finn real estate foundation level gift with support a vital
home away from home for 2 families for more then 100
days each. In addition, Finn Real Estate works to increase
awareness of Brent's Place through their own ongoing
participation of events and volunteer activities.
Patrick Finney believes that giving back to the community
is the cornerstone of his vision and a reflection of his
company. "I sponsor Brent's Place because families must
stick together at the toughest time of a child's life-fighting
cancer and illness. Brent's Place not only provides that
place, but 16 families understand what the others are going
through - that support is crucial to keeping a family from
despair. Brent's Place residents bond children and families
for life, giving them financial relief not to worry, and the
emotional gusto of each other. Birds of a feather!"
As founder of Finn Real Estate headquartered in Cherry
Creek, Patrick has witnessed the impact of his generosity not
only through his business,
but his employees and
community reputation.
He believes that supporting nonprofits like

to give back and make a

Meet Our Volunteers...
Why do you volunteer at Brent’s Place?
You may recognize Frank Mufic
from the front desk at Brent’s
Place where he volunteers his
time on Friday mornings… or
perhaps you’ve eaten one of
the tasty dinners that he cooks
for our families on a monthly
basis… or you may know him
from the Kid’s Cure for Cancer
planning committee. We are
never short of admiration for
Frank’s amazing time and
dedication and are so grateful
for his support. Frank first
It is a place where I feel I can make a positive
difference in the life of our families. Every
day is a tough day for them and if I can help
them out by cooking a meal or finding some
supplies for them while I am at the front
desk, it is a very simple gesture of charity and
love. I think if you asked any volunteer about
why they come to Brent’s Place it would all
come down to expressing love for those that
are having a tough time and lending them a
helping hand.
What is a favorite memory from
Brent’s Place?
I can still remember several years ago when
the people that I worked with held a drive
at our office facility for cleaning and
miscellaneous supplies. When we delivered
it to Brent’s Place I remember how happy the
people where there to receive all of them. It
was a great feeling.

Very simply it is a way of giving back to the

many animals that need homes. They are
in their time of need. I get back way more

Our family feels so blessed to have

Having Ashleigh diagnosed with
Leukemia and needing a bone

a tail spin. While our first concern
was her medical care there were so
many other things that needed to
be taken care of, one of which was
finding a place to live that would

Ashleigh. Brent’s Place is an amazing
facility that not only looks out for
the children’s welfare, it provides
families a home. While everything
else in our lives seemed out of control
we found comfort in knowing that
we had a home where our family
could find a sense of normalcy.

Party with a Purpose - February 19, 2014
We want to raise a glass and give a toast to Stacia Buck, Heidi McBride and everyone
involved with Starting with You and their Party with a Purpose. These two amazing
ladies work together to get their community involved in giving back through multiple
endeavors. One such avenue is their quarterly Party with a
Purpose. On February 19th, Stacia, Heidi and many of their
friends and family met at the Rio to enjoy drinks, food, and
good company. Each person was tasked to bring a donation
of goods or money. By the end of the evening they had
raised over $250, 4 boxes of cleaning supplies, a DVD player,
and countless gift cards.
Last year over $50,000 was raised through private parties
hosted by members of our community, including birthday
parties, book clubs, and knitting groups.
The next time you’re having a gathering why not ask your friends to bring something
for Brent’s Place. Contact Rachel at 720-343-2807 or rbernstein@brentsplace.org to
learn how to throw your own party to support Brent’s Place!

A year ago our little Esther read us her favorite book,

Picture: Carson reading his new copy of
"The Shaghetti Slurping Sewer-Serpent"
by Laura Ripes and Illustrated by Aaron Zenz
was so beautiful we had to share it with
others, so we recorded her reading with
Development Director Bridget Fitzpatrick
and posted to YouTube.
A few months later we were surprised
with an email from the book's author
Aaron Zenz. He loved getting to see our
little Esther reading his book and offered
to send us a few copies. We gladly
accepted, and were blown away when 15
copies of his books arrived the following
month, each one autographed for a child
living at Brent's Place and a promise for
future delivery's every few months.
With this generous gift we have been
able to gift every child with a book
and watch their joy at discovering the
characters come to life through Zenz's
creative artwork.
