In addition, feel free to attend the Membership Enhancement Program Open Forum and meet the GWRRA International Membership Enhancement Program Team. The schedule for these events will be in your "Wing World Magazine". Bob and Karla Greer HOW DID OKLAHOMA CHAPTER N DO IT! In a recent communique by Mike and Lori Stiger, GWRRA Directors, Ed and Linda Johnson, International Membership Enhancement Program Directors and Bob and Karla Greer, International Assistant Directors for the Chapter of the Year Program it was announced that Chapter N of Norman, Oklahoma has been selected as the 2011 GWRRA International Chapter of the Year. This is the second time in the five year history of the Chapter of the Year program that this honor has been awarded to a Region H chapter, the previous being Texas O for 2007. Throughout the year, OK-N seemed to be everywhere doing everything and firing on all cylinders every step of the way. Full slate of Chapter Officers? They had them. OCP Training? They did it. Chapter of the Year Seminar? They hosted one. Recruiting? They did many. Written Retention Plan? They have one. Extraordinary Chapter Events? They did a lot of them. Chapter banner, mascot, website and newsletter? They had them all. Chapter Couple of the Year participating in the District Selection? Yes they did. Rider Education Levels Program? They maxed out on points. Parking Lot Practice? Yes, on a hot, hot day. Leadership Training Seminars? They made them all. Horizon Program? They attended. Conventions attended? They made nine. All of these activities were in addition to their weekly dinner rides, monthly Business Gatherings, Anniversary Parties (both theirs and others) Christmas Party, planning meetings, a Lighthouse Tour of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and cooking and Larry LeTarte and Lawnie Andrews, Cindy Andrews and Linda Huggard serving dinner for the 40 to Phoenix riders. Date June 2012 3 Region H, The Hospitality Region Chapter Director Linda Huggard, Assistance Directors Larry LeTarte and Lawnie Andrews and CHOY Coordinator Cindy Andrews would like to extend their appreciation for the dedicated efforts of their fellow members : Darla and Dwight McBride, John Hobbs, Sue Wilson, Dale and Angie Hines, Randy and Maria Jones , Mike and Teresa Elmore, Jim and Bonnie Jones, Lonnie and Leadership Training Dianna Young, Jim and Suzanne Owens, Brian and Danielle Adams, Allen and Sheryl Heinrichs, Bob and Barbara Bledsoe, Don and Vera Fleming, Reta Tarver, Al and Anita Honeycutt, Earl Carr, Gerald and Cheryl Hudson, Neil and Susan Drucker, Charles and Mattie Rupprecht, Dale and Jeannie Moore, Tom and Sandy Billingsley, and Jim and Pam Ward. Also they would like to thank Bill and Dea Ann Gray, Ed and Ann Nahl, Dave and Cheryl Ward, Jack Wagner, Jerry and Becky Hodges, Earl Dunkleberger (OK-B) and Max Rowlett (OK-L) for their assistance. The old adage of “bite off more than you can chew, then chew it, plan more than you can do then do it” certainly described this active chapter last year. In view of their Chapter of the Year efforts it is abundantly clear why they are called the “Ncredibles”. They stayed focused on their goal and through work, fun and perseverance accomplished it as a team effort which is in essence the very heart and soul of the entire GWRRA organization. This is truly an honor and privilege for me and Christina. When we became Assistant District Directors we have met many chapters and have made many friends along the way. We hope to make as many chapter gatherings and chapter functions as possible. Christina and I joined GWRRA in 2003. I had missed riding a bike and I met a friend at work who was with GWRRA. He got my attention and before I knew it I was buying a Goldwing 1200 and attending chapter gatherings. We participated with Chapter M2 of Spring, Texas. In 2006 we became Membership Enhancement Coordinators for the chapter. We really enjoyed it lot. In 2008 we were honored to become Couple of the Year for the chapter and participated in the Couple of the Year Selection in 2009. We were also asked to step up to Assistant Chapter Directors for M2 in 2008. In 2010 we became Chapter Directors for M2. In 2010 to 2011 we were asked by Fred and Mandy Mew to become Assistance District Directors so the chapters in the Houston and outlining areas would have someone close to answer questions and visit their chapter functions. Since taking this position, we have visited many chapter gatherings and rallies. We have participated in the Leadership Training classes as well as the Horizon class. We have taken the OCP in 2010. We are also Level IV riders. We have attended Wing Ding and other District Conventions. Looking back on this it amazes me how time flies when you are having fun! I hope to accomplish as Texas District Director two main items, for all chapters to have FUN and to Date June 2012 7 Region H, The Hospitality Region make sure we communicate with one another from chapter levels all the way to International levels. I want all chapters to know I am just a phone call or email away from any questions they may have. We have participated in practically all levels in a chapter so we understand there are a lot of questions people may have and we are always here to help. They were taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. The trike is a total loss. We visited with Bob and Patsy week of May 21, and both expected to be released to care of their son, at home later that week. They were in good spirits, and looked foreword to getting on with their lives. Another trike is a possibility. When Carol passes, I am asking for all of her motorcyclist friends to escort her from he funeral home to her final resting place. Carol is going to be buried locally here in Fort Worth. If at all possible, can you get some members from the Chapter R to help? Sadly, Carol will probably not make much longer than 2-3 weeks at the most. When all final arrangements have been made I will let you know. Please keep Carol & Brian in your prayers! Brian Handleson, TX-P Educator Follow-up: Carol passed away Sunday, June 3. ARKANSAS CONVENTION REPORT WILL BE IN NEXT MONTHS ISSUE OF REGION H NEWSLETTER MESSAGE FROM GWRRA PRESIDENT ABEL GALLARDO Dear GWRRA Officer: First of all, I want to say Thank You to each and every one of you who serve and support this great Association. Your time, passion and dedication for GWRRA is what makes us the truly great Association that we are today! With that in mind, I must announce that GWRRA is beginning the process of searching for its next Director of GWRRA. Mike Stiger has held this position since April of 2010 and has worked tirelessly to bring about positive and measurable changes. During this period, Mike has balanced his time needed to serve our Association alongside his thriving and time intensive professional career. Understanding the ever increasing needs of both organizations, Mike has come to the determination that each organization requires more time and attention than he is currently able to provide. Thus, he has decided that the time has come for us to begin the process of finding his successor. As such, effective immediately, we will begin accepting formal inquiries from those interested in being considered for the position of Director of GWRRA. A preliminary summary of the position can be found here. Please forward all inquiries, resumes and support information to: president@gwrra.org Ride safe. We love May! Conventions, warmer weather, more riding and more time with friends. We break out of our winter shell and start acting like kids again! This time of year Fun for most of us is an acronym for "find us now!" The fun began in Texas! First, congratulations and thanks to Fred and Mandy Mew and your team for the fun we had in New Braunfels. Texas Derby Days was a hoot! Thanks again for your service and leadership to GWRRA and Texas District! Enjoy being a "jam" again! Next, congratulations to David and Christina Vidrine for being sworn in as Texas District Directors. We look forward to working (and having fun) with you and your team! Finally, thanks to Chris and Pam DePriest and team for the hospitality and good times in Harrison. "Ride-N-Arkansas" was a blast and kudos to you and your team! We wish you two the best settling back into the "jam" role. Thanks for your service and leadership to GWRRA and Arkansas District. Congratulations to Johnny and Mildred Glasscock for assuming the role as Arkansas District Directors. We are looking forward to great things in Arkansas from you and your team. If you are going to Wing Ding and haven't signed up to help at the International Bike Show, please go to the Region H website and sign up for a two hour slot (or more.) We are still in need of folks to help. If you are computer challenged and wish to help, let one of the Region Team members know and we will sign you up! See you down the road. Bill & Dea Ann Gray Region H Director, GWRRA 918-231-9371 cell www.region-h.org Date June 2012 21 Region H, The Hospitality Region Rider Educator Sam & Anita Belinoski Region H Rider Educator Coordinators DIFFERENT CAN BE DANGEROUS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It's quite noticeable in the motorcycle crash statistics - riders on either new bikes or bikes that do not belong to them are over-represented in crashes. There are obvious reasons for this, with the main one being unfamiliarity. A bike that you do not know is likely to have different brakes, a different clutch feel, maybe a new riding position, and a different handling feel. And then there are the other controls. Even just using the turn signals needs concentration. A lot of our physical riding is done by our subconscious, leaving our conscious free for the task of defensive/survival riding. When we get on a strange bike, a lot of our conscious processing tends to be channeled to the physical operation of the strange/new bike. So, the unexpected can catch us out. So we try to make an emergency maneuver on a bike we don't really know. The result can be locked wheels, a less than sharp swerve, a sudden disorientation and reduction in our capability of responding correctly to the situation. Or you use the old bike reflexes on the new/different bike... Thus, a situation that, on our old bike would be a pain in the ass may on that new/different bike, become a serious injury pain or even worse. So, when you are on a bike that you are not completely familiar with, anticipate more and leave extra room in traffic. And take the bike to an empty parking lot and try out a few riding exercises - slow riding, braking, weaves and turns - and get to know the feel and performance of the bike the fast and easy way. This month we will look at the Couple of the Year Program from the viewpoint of a new member…. You can imagine our disappointment when recently attending a GWRRA event we overheard this conversation between a first time attendee and a member who serves on a Chapter Team…it went something like this First timer: “what is a Couple of the Year all about “ Team member: “oh, they just sell tickets” That response leads us to believe there are folks who not only are members but have been chosen as leaders who are unaware of programs, responsibilities and the workings of GWRRA. A Couple of the Year is so much more than a peddler of tickets! They have been honored at the Chapter Level for all their participation, hard work and dedication to the Chapter. At the District level they have been chosen by a panel of Judges who carefully considered their leadership skills, involvement and desire to serve as Ambassadors for their District, At the Region Level the District Directors from that Region also carefully weigh their past involvement, dedication, knowledge of GWRRA and speaking ability along with their desire to represent their Region. International Couple of the Year is the pinnacle of the program where the GWRRA Region Directors carefully examine the resume and again judge the Couples on their ease in speaking before a crowd before choosing that one special couple to represent the entire GWRRA family. Couples at each level often are spokespersons who promote GWRRA to organizations in their community & other riders they may meet on the road .They often host or participate in seminars explaining the Couple of the Year program and serve as role models and mentors to new members. A Couple of the Year is far more than just ticket sellers and we hope the Directors at each level will inform their members as to what an extreme honor it is to be chosen as Couple of the Year. I want to thank everyone who attended along with all of the great instructors who presented them. During the past couple of months, I have had the privilege of certifying five new Leadership Training instructors. Congratulations to Steve and Billie Fleming of TX N-2, Red Roussel, LA District Trainer, and Wendell and Marie Vince, the outgoing Region H Couple of the Year. These folks successfully completed the Instructor Development and Certification program and have presented their certification seminars. They will be tremendous additions to the Leadership Training team. If anyone is interested in becoming a certified instructor, please contact me. There are a couple of upcoming events I would like to mention. Arkansas is presenting the Horizon Program in Morrillton, AR on June 23-24. If you haven't been thru Horizon, it is the most fun of any of the GWRRA training programs. It is a day and a half exercise in team building and self awareness and loaded with laughter. Anyone interested in attending should contact Larry Penepent (pilot-1@suddenlink.net) to enroll ASAP. There will be in Instructor Development and Certification Program conducted in El Dorado, KS on July 21. This is an 8-hour program covering presentation and public speaking skills along with familiarizing perspective instructors with the GWRRA training curriculum and methodology. Enrollments should be confirmed with Marty or Ruth Dannar (dannariguana@yahoo.com). Lastly, we still need volunteers to assist with the Wing Ding Bike show. Yes, we need certified judges, but we also need help with a lot of other things you don't need any experience for All positions and open 2hour timeslots are shown on the Region H webpage (www.GWRRA -H.org). The Bike Show will be Friday, July 6 with a brief meeting of all Bike Show volunteers on Thursday afternoon July 5, at 3pm. Oh, did I mention all Bike Show volunteers will receive free ice cream? May has been an extremely busy month for us. We attended the Texas District Convention in May, returned home and then left for Colorado. We arrived back in Texas on June 3, 2012 and we are now looking forward to attending Wing Ding in a few short weeks. At the Texas District Convention, we worked with the new Texas District Educators Ricky and Karen Frazier to train 19 GWRRA members with the MFA Certification. We want to congratulate the following participants upon their successful completion: Dave Charles Sherry Macomb Mark Campanga Alyce Dietly Russ Miller Stephen Morrison Rick Dietly Beverly Haley Marion Palmore Max Rowlett Jim Haley Betty Valentine Bart Harris Dallas Valentine Cheryl Harris Betty Williamson Sherry Hostetter Danny Williamson Carl Macomb We also want to thank Steve Bockhouse for traveling from Kansas to New Braunfels to teach the MFA renewal certification class. Unfortunately, we were not able to attend the Arkansas District Convention and were disappointed to miss all the fun and activities that were scheduled. We had to miss the Arkansas District Convention due to a previously scheduled personal commitment in Colorado but we took advantage of the opportunity and rode our Gold Wing to the event. We accumulated over 2000 miles during this time and encountered various different weather conditions. We rode from Dallas to Denver, Denver to Pagosa Springs and on to Durango. From Durango we traveled Date June 2012 25 Region H, The Hospitality Region to Mesa Verde and then on to Santa Fe, New Mexico before we started back to Texas. This recent trip brings us to remind everyone who will be riding for summer vacations to remember several important factors for your trip preparation. These are not all inclusive but very important: 1. Hydration: Improper hydration can easily result in heat exhaustion and dehydration. Start hydrating the day before not just when you start riding. 2. Clothing: In some areas, the climate may change quickly so be sure that you have clothing for hot and cold climates. 3. Proper Rest: Proper rest will prevent fatigue and then you will be able to meet your travel goals and assure that you are able to properly handle various road conditions that you may encounter. While traveling in west Texas and New Mexico, we encounter side winds of more than 45 miles an hour. (These winds would last for several hours of travel and this was exhausting.) Without proper rest, I would not have been able to control the bike under these conditions. Plan your ride and ride your plan. Do not push yourself. Make sure that you adhere to the goals you set forth. These tips will help you enjoy your trip and keep you safe. GWRRA TO BE ON GOOD MORING AMERICA PROGRAM I have been informed that Wayne Grant, North Carolina District Educator, will be appearing on the Good Morning America program on Friday June 22nd. He will be discussing motorcycle safety and our efforts to alert motorists to share the road with us through our Motorist Awareness Program. I encourage you all to contact your district and chapter participants with this information. Wayne has been a great asset to rider education and motorist awareness for many years and has been a past recipient of both a M.A. Merit Award and M.A. Coordinator of The Year. Please keep any information like this coming. I would like to recognize as many of you as I can in your efforts to enhance our program. I know this may sound like a cliché, but it's sincere. " Thank you for all you do ". April took us to Louisiana, May we stayed a little closer to home for the Texas District Convention. We traveled to New Braunfels, just north of San Antonio. As usual we found several of the local restaurants. New Braunfels is noted for its great German cuisine and for the oldest bakery in Texas. The opening ceremony was at the local Honda dealer and fitting with the theme, Texas Derby Days; of the convention the chapters kick things off with a horse race. There was a horse race all three days with three different winners. No triple crown. As the photos in this news letter show Texas had a very colorful fun filled and informative convention. Texas selected a fantastic couple as their Couple of the Year. Mike and Robin each ride their own bikes and enjoy the fun and close friendship from Chapter N2 in Humble, TX. On the way home Mike was involved in a very bad accident and is still in a hospital in the Houston area. Please keep Mike and Robin in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers from his injuries. Prior family commitments prevented us from attending the Arkansas convention this year. But this week Carleen and I are headed to the “Show Me State” for the Missouri District Convention. This will give us the opportunity to ride the wonderful roads of the beautiful states of Arkansas and Missouri. Later in June we embark on our trip to Wing Ding to cheer on Marie and Wendell as they participate in the International Couple of the Year selection. Come and join us on Tuesday for the selection program. See Ya’ Ridin’ Dale and Carleen Garrett Couple of the Year 2012-2013 Region H Date June 2012 27 Region H, The Hospitality Region By the Book By: Jack Wagner Region H Trainer “By the Book” articles are intended to help familiarize GWRRA Volunteer Leaders and Members with the policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer’s Handbook (OHB). A copy of the Officer’s Handbook can be found at the following Internet website: www.gwrra.org/oconnect/officerhandbook.html Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District, or Chapter newsletters. Are You Having Fun? Once again this month, I'm going to depart somewhat from the 'normal' By the Book' format and talk about another officer resource intended to help provide support for our motto of 'Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge'. If chapter gatherings are nothing more than sharing information that could be obtained by reading the chapter newsletter, then members will loose interest in attending the actual function. Yes, everyone should enjoy the fellowship gatherings provide, and hopefully the food is good enough to bring them back. But if you're looking for a way to spice things up beyond just the routine 'reading of the newsletter', rider ED. presentation and 50/50 drawing, then keep reading.. On the Membership Enhancement page of www.gwrra.org, there is a link to the Fun Activities Guide. That guide is a treasure trove of ideas to make your gatherings and rides much more FUN. Just as there are regional cuisines, its not uncommon for regional activities to be commonplace, some of which you may not be aware of in your area. The Fun Activities Guide is by no means meant to be a comprehensive collection. But it is a good place to go for ideas which may be new to your chapter participants. Some of the games may seem silly, but you'd be surprised by how much everyone enjoys them once they get started. There are ice breakers, which really get visitors and new members involved in making new acquaintances or learning something new about old friends. There are games of 'skill' where everyone can take a turn at accomplishing a task. There are couples activities as well as individual activities. Take a cue from the TV show Minute to Win It. There are ideas for recognition awards. After all, who doesn't like to be publicly recognized for their accomplishments – okay, some 'happenings', while deserving of recognition, aren't necessarily enjoyed by the recipient. But remember, we're laughing with you, not at you. Well, sometimes we are laughing at you, but you'll get your turn to get even – which is part of what makes it fun. While these can be mildly embarrassing, they should never be in poor taste and always done in good fun. We all enjoy just riding together – whether it be for food or just to enjoy a nice afternoon out. But there are ways to make rides more than just following each other to the destination. The Fun Activities Guide has ideas for that as well. Some of which can be easily turned into chapter fundraisers if desired. So take a look at the Fun Activities Guide. If you have other ideas, please share them – instructions for doing that are also part of the Guide. Don't loose sight of the first word of why we exist – FUN! Remember, if its not fun, you must not doing it right. Learn Something New…Then Teach Someone! Several of the chapters are heading for the monthly Cassoday ride June 3rd. That event has really grown in numbers. Chapter ‘Q’ had an unusual Spring Ride. It’s called a “challenge” ride. There are 105 counties in Kansas and ‘Q’ has challenged one and all to see how many counties they can ride to by the end of the year. Here are the simple rules. Ride to each county seat, park your Wing in front of the court house and take a picture. Then log it on the form available to you, or keep your own log. Jack & Teresa Kistler, Bill Tucker and Dick Shaw from ‘Q’ rode a couple of weekends ago. Bill & Dick got a head start and ended up with 24 counties in 972 miles. Bill has added one more since then. Come join The Q's’ Crew. If you want to ride, contact a Chapter Director. Every chapter is scheduling some very interesting rides each month.
