FAREWELL TO KATHLEEN MEALMAN
On September 18 after the 10:15 AM
service, we will say goodbye to our
retiring secretary, Kathleen Mealman.
Kathleen has been a part of our staff since
November 15, 2009. From that time, she
has made a huge, positive difference for
us, not only in the church office but beyond
the office doors. In her nearly seven years
among us, Kathleen has met with the newcomers’ committee, assisted John Hawn
with the parish retreat in which we brought
in Barbara Crafton, helped us with various
aspects of the 175th Anniversary celebration in 2011; held down the office fort during my sabbatical that same year; worked
magic with her son, Dave, to upgrade our
computers—twice—worked with Pete Rankin to upgrade our phone system—it’s actually a system, now, rather than a conglomeration—and researched everything we
needed to know for our new copy machine,
which replaced both a cantankerous copier
and a doddering duplicator. Kathleen reorganized the office, and it was her vision
that resulted in a rearrangement that allows
for a second desk and computer for volunteers. Her most recent project is culling and
rearranging years and years of office files.
Kathleen came to us with a great deal of
experience in both the church world and
the business world. She has a Master of
Arts in Theological Studies from Mennonite
Seminary in Indiana, but attended several
seminaries in earning her degree, because
she and her husband moved often.
Kathleen served 27 years in Methodist
churches as a diaconal minister and as director of Christian education; she served on
boards overseeing candidates for ordination; she volunteered in congregations of
the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),
working with youth, children and adults.
She preached, led retreats, trained Sunday
school teachers and other adult leaders,
even after she’d retired from full-time
church work.
A big project she undertook fairly recently
was to set up a parish library in the church
she attended, where she also supervised
volunteers and served on the governing
board.
Currently Kathleen is a member of St. John
United Church of Christ in Manchester.
She is looking forward to being more involved there, now that she will have her
weekdays free, and also to sleeping in, now
that she will not be driving from Ballwin to
St. Charles Tuesday through Friday. We
will miss her greatly! Be sure to come to

TRINITY SUNDAY, MAY 22, 2016 – YOUTH SERVICE
Then I started thinking about this sermon and I
thought, ―What if Jesus was a huge Blues fan like
me?‖ Would he get mad and all bent out of shape
like I do when they lose? What would Jesus do?
Then I remembered, he would already know the
outcome of the game before it started, so he’d probably be a lot more chill about it.
But there is a lesson for me and the Blues in this
passage - it does not do any good for us to sit
around and worry or be mad or complain that we
don’t understand why they did not win. They have to
have faith that their Coach has taught them the right
way to play and that if they trust in him and trust in
each other, good things will eventually happen.
And you have to have faith enough to take chances
to get opportunities. You don’t know if you’ll score a
goal or if your team will win, but you have to have
faith enough in yourself, your Coaches and your
teammates to try.

The gospel passage for this Sunday is from the Book of
John. Jesus is talking to his friends for the last time before
he has to leave. Jesus is telling them about how he has lots
of things he wants to tell them before he leaves, but he won’t
be able to. Besides, he says, even if I told you, you could not
handle it. Instead, he says they’ll have to trust that he will be
with them in Spirit to help them along their way.
I’ve been thinking about how this applies to me in my life and
I think it’s really similar to the passage. First off, everyone
has lots of things they want to do before they die. Personally,
I want to go sky-diving, but that’s just me.
But I think what Jesus is trying to say is that you don’t wait
for things to come to you. Trust that He will be with you to
show you the way, so you shouldn’t give up on opportunities
when they come your way just because you don’t think you
have all the answers. And don’t wait for someone else to do
it for you.
I was writing this sermon after watching the Blues lose a
game and I was mad and frustrated. I told my Dad that I did
not want to go to any more games, because every time I go,
they seem to lose. Then I thought about it and said, ―Well,
it’s probably OK if you want to take me to some games, as
long as they’re regular season games that don’t mean
anything.‖
That’s a real key in life. I know I’m only 16, but I
think a lot about life, and one thing I think I have
learned is, if you don’t take the chance, sometimes
there’s not another one.
We just finished final exams and if ever there was a
lesson about stressing over not having all the
answers, it’s studying for final exams! But if you
have faith in yourself, the things you’ve been taught
and, most importantly, that God is looking out for
you. You may not score the winning goal or get the
grade you hoped for on the test, but Jesus says,
―It’s all good.‖ You may not even recognize it at the
time, but it will all make sense in the end. Amen.
BOOK GROUP CHANGES MEETING DAY
Now First TUESDAYS at 2:00 PM
The Random Book Group will now meet on the first
Tuesday of each month. The time is still 2 PM. The
place is still in the Trinity Church Library. The next
meeting will be Tuesday, October 4. The book chosen
for that day is The Nightingale, by Kristin Hannah. This
year’s selections will be a mixture of fiction, and nonfiction, including memoir and mystery. All books chosen
are available in the public library, and generally also in
electronic form and of course, hard
copy. Just pick up one and jump in!

MINISTRY OF HEALING
THANK YOU!
For the past five years, Trinity has offered a Healing
Service on the second Sunday of each month.
As people have become more familiar with this Service,
more and more people are coming to the Altar to be
anointed and to receive prayer.
We currently have three trained Healing Ministers who
also offer prayer after each Worship Service if anyone
wants prayer.
Prayer offers comfort and peace to the person receiving
the prayer. God calls us to prayer; prayer opens us up
to a relationship with God; and the Spirit of God is touching many lives at Trinity.
If there is anyone who feels he or she would like to be a
Healing Minister, we ask you to pray about it and seek
out Lori Cooper, Jan Peery or Betty Bowen for further
information. New Ministers are always welcomed.

Most of the garden has now been put to rest and the beds
have been prepared for next year.
There is still okra and egg plant in the garden. If you like
these vegetables, please help yourself as we are not reaping enough to take to the Food Pantry.

We have had a very good harvest this year. We give thanks
for the rain, sunshine and help by Bill Warren, Janey & Bob
Jones, Sharon Schooler, Betty Bowen and whoever else
may have helped that we are not aware of.
Salvation Army, FISH and OASIS Food Pantries benefitted
from all the food we harvested this year, and once again
Trinity was able to help feed the hungry.

WHAT‘S NEW AT TRINITY CHURCH?
Thanks to your generosity, the Vestry’s careful planning, and
specific gifts, many things are up-to-date at Trinity Church!
The Church itself is significantly brighter at worship, with
LED lights replacing most of the incandescent and compact
fluorescent bulbs—and non-working sockets repaired—all in
the last week of August!

A PLAYGROUND NEAR YOU!
Gifts in memory of Bob and Jane Horning will provide exciting additional equipment to the Trinity
Church playground. The substantial wooden structure and slides we already have are also memorial
In the Reception Area, you’ll note a couple of additions—
more comfortable folding chairs, also to be used in the parish hall, and a soon-to-be working electronic screen. The
screen will offer an eye-catching welcome to our building,
provide information on events and meetings, display photos
of activities and people, and remind us (and others) of upcoming programs.
We began discussing the possibility of an indoor electronic
message board at the 2015 Vestry retreat. We had discovered (to the shock of the Rector) that not everyone reads the
newsletter, even on-line; not everyone reads the bulletin,
even on Sundays; not everyone reads e-mails, let alone paper letters—BUT, almost everyone wants ―improved communication‖ at Trinity Church. Hence, the screen! (You may
also have noticed our increased action for Trinity Church on
Face Book and Twitter. Look soon for some additions to our
website.)
In addition to the visible, there’s a huge INVISIBLE improvement in the Reception Area! For safety and efficiency, we
have four new circuits! NO LONGER will the coffee pot short
-out the lights and everything else! The ice maker has its
own circuit, as does the refrigerator. The appliances next to
the sink have their own circuits. We also have two new circuits in the church office, one for the copier alone, to prevent
problems before they arise.
In the St. Hilda Room, we now have a screen which hangs
on the wall and can be opened and closed remotely. It provides a much larger area than the television for groups to
watch videos or power point presentations. We have a second, heavy, humanly activated screen, for use in the church
itself, with a utility cart containing a video camera, hook-ups
for computer and other electronic devices, and a small
sound system.
In addition, we have a document reader, which has the same
ability as a large old opaque projector, to show maps and
books. All of these components can be integrated in a power
point or other presentation. With the video projector we already have and use, and our overhead projector, the creative possibilities for programs are wide open!
gifts, in honor of Robert Thomas, installed more
than 25 years ago. Sometime in October, the additional equipment (pictured above) will arrive.
The equipment is being sold to us for ―supervised
installation.‖ That means, of course, that we will
need the help of at least six able-bodied persons in
a one-day blitz of unloading, assembling, pouring
concrete, and setting everything up. The company,
Noah’s Parks and Playgrounds, sends a supervising
person and a powered augur for drilling footings.
We provide the cement, the people, electricity, hand
tools, and a flat surface for installation, as well as
the pea gravel to be delivered and spread several
days after everything else is completed.
We will also provide meals and snacks, water, and
moral support for all our volunteers!
To accommodate the new equipment, the fenced
playground area will have to be expanded. We will
ask the person who installed the fence to come take
down two sides of it before the components arrive,
and to put up the additional fence we need after
playground installation. We will put up a sign-up
sheet now, and when we know a date, we will finetune the installation day (much as we did the parking lot last year)!

We invite you to jump into Bible study with a group of
people who meet on Wednesday mornings from 10 –
11:15 in the St. Hilda Room on the upper level of the
building. We pray together, laugh, and study Holy Scripture. No previous scripture study or knowledge is necessary. We will even provide you with a Bible until you decide what translation you wish to own for yourself. And,
we have the best coffee in town!
