Here comes summer and as you’ll see in this
newsletter, the library is ready!
This first-time summer edition covers three months June, July and August- and is designed to make it
easier for you to map out your plans at the library.
We’ve also added a uniform registration date so that
if you see a Kids’ World program happening later in
the summer, no need to wait. You can conveniently
register beginning June 1.
Where will the next three months take you? We hope
to the library and to many of the fantastic events
happening around town where we’ll be spending our
summer too.

Pow! Bam! Kaboom! It’s a summer of
superheroes. Sign up in Kids’ World or on the
bookmobile to get a book log in which to record your reading
goals and keep track of your progress. Come in to the library
each week to play Punch In!, make a craft or enter our Game
of the Week raffle. For infants to age 12.
Teens
This summer in the Hub, we’re working on harnessing our
superpowers. You’re one step closer to earning your stripes each
time you use your super mind to review a book/movie/CD, gain new skills at one of
our events, engineer a project in our DIY space, stretch your creativity by submitting
a film to the Teen Film Fest or volunteer to be a real-life superhero. Focus on one
or all of these powers and successfully complete them five times to be eligible to
win prizes like free Chipotle and App Store gift cards and the grand prize – a pair of
tickets to fly for real at iFly: Indoor Skydiving. For teens in grades 7–12.

Discover your super reading style!
Take our interactive online quiz to
discover your own reading superpower and enter for a chance
to win prizes. Get custom reading recommendations based
on your results, add your own suggestions to our in-library
display and read like a hero this summer. Participate at

Experience a day filled with comics, superheroes, crafts, gaming, workshops and
more. Meet illustrators and explore the world of their artwork in our Artists’ Alley.
Stretch your creativity in hands-on sessions, including drawing workshops with
Paupers Art Guild and making Ectoplasm with the Des Plaines Ghostbusters. Hear
from industry insiders like Sun Bros Studio’s Wesley Sun on how he successfully crowdfunded a comic and
award-winning competitive cosplayer Lisa Hale about the art of costuming.
Compete with others in tabletop and video game matches throughout the day. And don’t forget to take a photo with The Dark Side as

Collect “Befriend a
Badge” Trading Cards
Move over athletes, there’s a new set of collectible trading cards in town–officers from the Arlington
Heights Police Department (AHPD) who recently paid a visit to Kids’ World as part of their
Befriend a Badge program. A community outreach initiative, Befriend a Badge features 11 AHPD
officers on trading cards complete with photos, biographical information and words of advice for
children. Kids are encouraged to collect all 11 cards to be eligible for prizes. Ninety children got a
jump on this when some of the Befriend a Badge officers visited the library one day after school.
The kids were treated to one-on-one time with the officers and the chance to collect and take home
seven autographed cards.
Befriend a Badge continues throughout the summer including stops at the Farmers Market,
Saturday, June 4, 8–11 a.m., Parking Lot S at Vail and Fremont Streets, and at the Promenade of Art,
Saturday, June 11, noon–2 p.m., at Jewel, 122 N. Vail Street. Befriend a Badge prize winners will be
announced at National Night Out, Tuesday, August 2 at North School Park.
Find Books for
Your Book Club

The library has long supported local book clubs in a variety of ways,
including making available book discussion sets that allow longer checkout
periods. Pam Schwarting, AHML’s book club coordinator, has found a new
way to help my Men’s Book Group. When the discussion book sets don’t
meet our needs, Pam is often able to arrange loans from other libraries that
arrive about a month before we discuss that particular book. This has been
a great service for our group. It is just one example of how the library seeks
innovative ways to serve its patrons.”

More than 400 guests celebrated the arts and
education Thursday, May 5, at the opening night
reception for the 24th Annual Distrist 25 Student Art
Show at the library. More than 250 students from
seven area elementary schools and two middle
schools were honored. The South Middle School
Jazz Band, led by Oksana Lukaszewskyj, played
to entertain the large crowd of visitors. Students
of all ages enjoyed the many different types of art
on display, from 2D displays on the walls in the
Marketplace to 3D art in the library’s display cases.

Computer Classes at the Senior Center
There will be no computer classes offered in the Computer Room at the Senior
Center in July and August due to the installation of new computers and software, and
staff and volunteer training. The Computer Room will remain open for customer
use. In-person registration for fall classes (September–December) will be held at
the Senior Center from 9:30 a.m.–noon on Monday, August 22. Phone registration
