GROWING OUT SERVICE When you buy an unbroken youngster you are getting first bite of the cherry. These are not horses that have been assessed by the professionals and passed over. These youngsters have the potential to change Australian Olympic history. The first step with an unbroken youngster is to grow him/her out with exposure to good fencing, appropriate companionship and a diet that includes the right minerals for bones and joints to develop, plus a program of regular worming. Auction of the Stars will take care of all of this. You do not have to have a moment’s worry. It’s a great way to buy a youngster, and a great way to get the beginnings of a dream, managed by professionals. For more information and costing simply pick up the phone and talk to Heath 0417 656636 or email info@auctionofthestars.com OF THE CHANGING TIMES In this economic climate right now in Australia, selling anything is tough going. So attending auctions, especially horse auctions, is a great way for buyers to take advantage of the tough economy. Funnily enough, Auction of the Stars is a more popular vehicle for selling horses today than ever before. This is primarily due to the fact that traditional methods of sale like magazines, newspaper ads and websites are already oversubscribed and perhaps do not have the flexibility in reducing a sale price to meet the market, which the auction situation certainly does. The auction situation clearly does pressure the vendors to meet the market. The vendors have spent considerable monies advertising and preparing their horses for this “one-off” event and do face the scenario of going home even poorer and not having sold their horse unless they are prepared to meet the market. From a buyer’s point of view, there are some 26 riding horses in one location. These horses represent campaigned schoolmasters at FEI dressage level, state-of-the-art young competition horses already winning on their way to the top, and also youngsters just broken-in, at the very beginning of their journey. From a buyer’s perspective, they are able to ride and compare numerous specially selected horses against one another within a very short period of time. This ability to compare one horse against the other is a wonderful opportunity and allows buyers to be much more accurate than usual in assessing the real worth of each horse especially with a view to competition. These above factors contribute to the Auction of the Stars being more popular than ever from a buyer’s point of view and at the risk of repeating ourselves, the four advantageous buyers’ points are packaged below: A. B. C. D. Vendors being subjected to huge pressure to meet the current market in terms of pricing Buyers being able to inspect and trial a number of high quality horses in one location The phenomena of being able to immediately compare one horse against another The controlled trialling and direction that is part of the Auction of the Stars does make for a much safer and informative assessment of potential purchases. As a result of these factors, Auction of the Stars has experienced huge success in terms of horses being sold in the riding section. However, the Auction of the Stars once did revolve around service fees and yearlings. Really, the auction started as a vehicle for serious stateof-the-art breeders to distribute young stock to discerning buyers. Today this aspect of Auction of the Stars is not as robust as it once was in terms of successful sales. 8. There are lots of breeders in Australia who have produced really good weanlings and who have become very clever with marketing especially with the advent of websites and social media. Auction of the Stars once monopolised this section of the market, but not today. Nevertheless, we believe that this sector will experience a resurgence in the near future. Without question, the quality of horses available to riders today is amazing and these horses definitely did not exist 10 years ago. The quality of horse flesh is incomparable and as a result the Australian riders are progressing rapidly in their studies of being top riders. The point is that this phenomena will only gain in momentum. Every genetic in the top group of horses at the London Olympics, whether it be dressage, whether it be eventing or whether it be show-jumping, can be found in the Australian breeding programs. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy that outstanding gold medal horses will be found in the near future amongst the Australian horse population. To date, these individual megastar horses have appeared from breeding programs in the Northern Hemisphere and so the Australians have been inclined to adopt a policy of purchasing European horses when searching for that special special partner. It is worth remembering that you can be standing on top of a gold mine and die poor unless you are brave enough to go digging. With the genetics represented by imported stallions and the prolific use of frozen semen, of course the first wave of Australian-born superstars is already in existence. We believe this will be clearly illustrated in the near future. Right now, however, Auction of the Stars is presenting a bunch of beautifully bred weanlings and yearlings that do represent great value for money and an even greater likelihood than ever before of an international superstar. Even further back in the food chain are the broodmares, and this year we have a record offering of six broodmares. These broodmares do represent a wonderful cross section of top performing bloodlines and are in foal to really great stallions. Some of these mares are young and often enough buyers will take these mares home, have a foal, and then break in the mares’ and enjoy a state-of-the-art competition horse. There are a couple of famous examples where broodmares went on to become successful competitors, for example, Kenare Snowshoes went to the USA as an international showjumper, Mintie Magic has to gone on to be a serious dressage competitor. Because of the economy, we do in actual fact offer vendor finance or payment plans. This does make a big difference to some buyers. Of course not all vendors are in a position to offer this option so you do need to make inquiries, however, please know we will do the best we can. Yours sincerely, Heath Ryan and Ann-Maree Lourey Heath Ryan Ann-Maree Lourey 9. Ridden Horse Trialling OF THE This is one of the outstanding opportunities offered through the AOS selling program. We would encourage all riders who are slightly interested in the ridden horses to pluck up the courage to trial these horses in the official trialling times. Of course you are very welcome to trial these horses by prior arrangement in the weeks preceding the auction. Most people do suffer from the thought of riding in front of a crowd on the official trialling day. Our take on this is that if you are too embarrassed to look out for your own interests, then certainly nobody else will. Also, if you have dreams and ambitions, secret or otherwise, and being embarrassed is the biggest obstacle you have to overcome, then really life is not too bad. Realistically you will have to overcome much bigger obstacles than just being self-conscious or embarrassed. Get out there, trial these horses and take advantage of a great opportunity. At the auction you do have the unique advantage of comparing one horse against the other. This comparison opportunity is exactly what happens in competition, one horse immediately compared against another, a phenomena which is very difficult to replicate when buying a horse privately. Riding is a passion discipline and in most instances when buying privately a prospective purchaser falls in love with a horse and buys it. In the auction situation, a prospective purchaser is much more likely to weigh up the pros and cons of each horse on a comparative basis. Of course, falling in love with the horse is a critical ingredient for success but we at the AOS would encourage you firstly to select your next horse on an intellectual level, then follow your heart and fall in love with the horse. We all know of people that have bought horses that didn’t turn out to be everything they had hoped for but nevertheless, love the horse and persevere even when it is clear they should sell and start again. Treat the auction trialling as a day at the office. We encourage everyone to trial each horse that goes close to falling into their wish list category. Keep in mind that sometimes a horse that reads and looks mediocre in the catalogue actually turns out to be lots better in real life than you had expected. Conversely, some horses will catch your imagination in the catalogue, and then be disappointing in real life. Once you ride more than two horses you will lose track of details on each horse so we encourage you to write notes on each horse immediately after trialling them. Also, watching a horse being trialled by other riders is a great way of assessing honesty and rideability. The first official trialling is at 11.30am on Saturday December 15 and we would encourage all interested parties to take advantage of this Saturday trialling. This does give you as the potential buyer the opportunity to have another ride the next day Sunday December 16 at 8am. This also gives you enough time to research the horses and talk to the owners. The basic format of trialling is that two or three horses come into the arena and are shown off for the first five minutes by their vendors, basically warming up and just gently running through the horse’s routine. Then people wishing to have a little sit are invited to come forward. Prospective buyers organise to trial a horse by approaching the AOS representative, who takes a list of names so as to keep the trialling ordered, and also signing the appropriate waivers. Each trialling is tailored to each rider’s individual needs, keeping in mind that the first and foremost priority is safety, and of course the well-being of the horse. It is a very hectic schedule with two sessions of public trialling plus the auction, all in two days, so horse welfare is a major consideration. We are of course very aware of also servicing the riders’ needs. Good luck, and if you have any questions please feel free to contact Sharon Carroll on 0412 826725 or email info@auctionofthestars.com. 12. As with all the Fiji R youngsters, Florence R has a wonderful temperament and this comes from the stallion Florestan I. Florence R has a really great laidback walk with super overtrack. At first when she is trotted up she is very quiet, however, with some encouragement one realises she is unexpectedly dynamic with great hock bend and typical Fiji R front forearms dancing across the ground. Her canter is balanced and elegant. Florence R is out of the Salute mare Slinky R. Salute is probably the most influential performance stallion in Australia at the moment being the sire of Victory Salute, 9th in the world at the WEG 2010 and also the sire of Stirling Stilton who was the highest-placed Australian combination at the WEG in 2002. Salute is also the sire of Staccato, who was ranked the number one eventing stallion in the world some years ago; F1 Pharenelli, who was short-listed for the 2012 Olympics; DP Christopher, who was the NSW Grand Prix dressage champion; and Salute was the sire of the mother of Mystery Whisper, who competed at the London 2012 Olympics. Strike is by perhaps the most influential performance stallion in Australia today, Salute. Seahorse R ON ACCOUNT OF RYANS LOT 3 Pic: PeterStoop@exemail.com.au Black colt 17/2/12 mat 16.1hh Seahorse R is an exquisite individual albeit a little bit hairy in the photo. The paces are exciting, seemingly straight out of a ballet display, being ever so light and precise with wonderful artistic interpretations. Seahorse R has large expressive eyes and the refined conformation that can only be described as exquisite elegance. Seahorse R has very special genetics being by Starnberg. Starnberg was a sensational young licensed Sir Donnerhall stallion imported into the country by Pamela Maine. Starnberg was always destiny bound to be Pamela’s international dressage horse. Initially Starnberg trained at Ryans and by six years of age had mastered wonderful piaffe, passage and reliable expressive one-time flying changes. Absolutely amazing! Unfortunately it is very difficult for young serving stallions to concentrate 100% at competitions and so the decision to geld him was made once the ride was taken over full-time by Pamela. So Seahorse R is one of the very few Starnberg foals ever. On the dam side, Delphinium R carries Donnerhall and Pik Bube bloodlines through Don Ramiro; these are arguably some of the greatest family dynasties in Europe. Delphinium R is also the mother of Kathryn Croft’s FEI dressage horse Snapdragon. Jocelyn Brown R does have the most magnificent trot work as can be seen on the front page and what’s more shows extreme talent in her presentation of piaffe, as illustrated on this page. Quite frankly, this is probably already better than 70% of the Olympic horses. Jocelyn Brown R does have just the most amazing talent for piaffe and passage. Jocelyn Brown R has been out to a number of baby dressage competitions with wins and scores regularly over 70%. The breeding of Jocelyn Brown R is fascinating. The sire, Jive Magic, is a Grand Prix competition horse with wins including the Grand Prix at the biggest show in Australia, the Sydney CDI. The dam of Jocelyn Brown R is Ella R who is by the Dutch stallion Jazz. Jazz himself represented Holland as an international Grand Prix horse at the 2002 WEG in Spain. His mother has bred many good dressage/eventers that have gone to the top, and his halfbrother is competing elementary. His father had a very successful dressage/ eventing career prior to being injured and becoming a breeding stallion. After riding many successful dressage/eventing horses from his dad, Domingo, and our top eventing mare, we put them together to produce Celebration. He has competed in two dressage comps as a 2yo, placed in top 10 both times, been to many ag shows and the judges loved him. Celebration has potential as a dressage horse/stallion at stud. Celebration was born palomino and began to grey out as a 2yo. He has 10 foals on the ground to date, 60% coloured and not turning grey. Of his 10 foals, 80% are to non-coloured mares. All foals are put together amazingly well with the temperament everyone dreams of. The three foals already broken in are dream to ride. Celebration is up for sale due to rider’s ill health. Jostle R is out of the wonderful matriarch of the Ryans broodmare herd, Marge R. Marge R is the mother of two outstanding broodmares as well as some wonderful competition horses - Jude R, who is a full-brother to Jostle R and is being campaigned by Australian Grand Prix rider Sue Hearn; Jermyn Street, another full-brother owned by Susie Clapton is taking the young horse classes by storm; Rinaldo R, a young horse about to start, being campaigned by Grand Prix rider Jess Clarke; Ringo R, another young horse for the future owned by young rider Matilda Bergen again with a big future mapped out. Interesting to note, Marge R is by Richmeed Medallion who is also the sire of Mystery Whisper, who competed at the 2012 London Olympics. Jostle R is a beautiful upstanding looking mare. Sonic Spirit ON ACCOUNT OF HOWARD SMYTH LOT 28 Black colt 22/09/08 16.3hh Sonic has been selectively bred by a boutique breeder and at four is not yet gelded since he wins top marks for temperament as a young stallion! Sonic has been a joy since he was born. Backed as a 3-year-old, he has been in light work for the past 12 months. He is fun to ride, working happily through the basics and is ready to move on into any discipline, although everyone who sees him says it must be dressage! The day he was conceived I helped collect the semen, and scanned and inseminated his dam in the field down the road. This colt has brought me great pleasure and I feel he is the best horse I have ever owned. My aim is to breed quality horses on a small scale as a hobby breeder with a passion for warmbloods. Anyone who sets out to breed has an image in mind of what they want and Sonic fits that picture and makes it all worthwhile. Sad as I am to sell him, he shows so much potential that I would not be able to do him justice. Sonic scored well as a foal with ACE and is still maturing and growing. His conformation speaks for itself and his outstanding, floating trot is probably his strongest feature, although his paces are fantastic and he has shown no vices, just great presence and a beautiful character.
