Hello Members,
Here it is mid-February as I write this article, and it feels like
late spring. The weather has been great and as certainly got
boaters out on the water. Not a lot of wind for the most part,
but beautiful skies.
We have had some great events over the past few weeks.
Although the ‘49ers didn’t win, and the Pats didn’t even get
in, we had a great Super Bowl Party on Feb 3rd. Special
thanks to Derith (she visited for a few weeks!), Penny and
all those that helped get the party organized. We had a raffle
and brought in another $250 for the roof fund. We put on
another great event in February. The Valentines Dinner and
Dance went very well and we had a lot of compliments.
Thanks again Penny. We’ve had three well attended movie
nights, with one to go and then the Academy Awards Party.
All proceeds have been going to the roof fund. Penny and
her crew also ran a Taco Tuesday with proceeds again to the
roof fund. Upcoming events in March are the St Patrick’s Day
party on the 16th and the Easter Brunch on the 31st. And
don’t forget Trivia night on Tuesdays.
As you can see, member events are raising a few bucks at
a time, whether it be for the roof fund or some other cause.
Without a reserve fund, we have been relying on these fund
raisers to get things done. So far, I think we have been lucky
that we have been getting by in this manner. Richard Bolz
continues to plug away at putting together a list of major
projects that we will eventually HAVE to come up with funds
for. Stay tuned.
FOUNDED IN 1977
One such upcoming project is the upgrades to the galley in
order to stay in compliance with county codes. Fortunately, Monday Night Football is donating the proceeds from
the 2012 season for that project. I’m not sure who started
the MNF dinners at the club. Walt Lew was at the helm
for 11 years beginning in 1995 and Jay Stewart joining him
in 1998. Dick and Carol Ann Dowling took over in 2006.
Paul Burrows and Candy Garnett have run it for the past two
years. I want to thank Paul and Candy for all their work and
all of the guest chefs that have volunteered their time, and
their special meals. MNF has always run on the principle of
raising funds that would be given back to the club for something that would be of value to the members. It is not run
by the board. There are so many of the items that have been
funded by MNF that there isn’t room in this article. From
deck furniture, TVs, Veterans Day dinners, Christmas trees,
computers, barbecues, and the list goes on. MNF has averaged about $3,000 per year. I would hate to see this tradition end, but Paul and Candy are stepping down. So we will
need someone to take over in September. Please contact me
if you are interested.
A clarification to my February article is in order. The last
paragraph was a little confusing as it was edited after Anita
Glidewell volunteered to take over as Port Captain. If you
can help Anita out, please contact her.

January 26 was another successful project day; by George I think we’ve got this volunteering figured out!
16 members offered up their helping hands by choosing their project(s) off the list and at the end of 4 hours
38 of the 46 projects were completed.

Roger Williams once again came to the rescue in repairing deck furniture.
Randy Norman didn’t make the day, but took care of numerous projects last week.
Thanks go out to Lee Ritchie for supplying a cord of fire wood.
The projects vary greatly; some are desperately needed, a few are creative and some are grungy. Occasionally some can become dangerous; J.C. was counting his blessing when the solid steel pots and pan rack that
he was scrubbing - fell from the ceiling and brushed his back – he could have been squashed! It took 4 men
to put it back up. There are other high lights of the day, but one that stands out in my mind is Rachelle hand
washing all the toys in the children’s toy box! See what I mean about helping out can be fun!

Theme most romantic dinner memory. Couple,friends were invited to decorate their Valentines Dinner Table
to represent that memory. The best table, won Gift vertical from ATOLL, Wine and 4 Valentine glasses.
We had 40 people for dinner.
We had many decorate their own tables. The decorations were wonderful, we traveled from Paris, to Texas, to
Graceland. There were candles roses, candy, and heart shaped salmon mouse. Changes was flowing candles
flickering and an awesome dinner.
The judges had such a hard time picking a winner that every table won a bottle of wine. The grand Prize went
to the Allison’s, Shus, and Stells. Elvis was inThe house. The Shus and Stells had marriage vow renewals In
the Graceland Chapel in Vegas so it Was an easy choice for a theme. Elvis glasses, singing Elvis, pill bottles
valentine from Elvis and Anne Margaret and Priscilla at the table.

We will have the traditional Corned Beef

Easter is in March this year so we will be
holding our annual Easter Brunch and Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday the 31st. In this

Bunny will on the back lawn at NOON.
Reservations are required for the Brunch
and you may respond to the bar, office or to
ATOL. (Info is on the flyer in this issue)
The Easter egg hunts is open to all children
under 10—please let us know if you will be
attending so we can make sure the Easter
Bunny has plenty of Eggs!

note that we have Lounge music back in
the Norton Lounge on Friday March 8th,
and Sat. March 30-- as well as ATOL presenting the return of the Flamenco Dancers and dinner on Sat. evening March 23.

Looking ahead into April we have the Parking lot sale on April 7th. The Floating Realtors will be cruising into the club on both
April 14th and returning again on the 27th.
We have the Marin Club in on the 19th and
they will be joining us for Opening Day on
April 20th. Our Mother’s Day brunch will
be on Sunday May 12th.

BYC Safety Team 2013 Program and Classes
The Safety Team provides club members with opportunities for Vessel
Safety Checks and Boating Safety Education.
Safety Education Classes will be offered concurrently with dinner on the
last Wednesday of the month (dinner starts 6:30; meal not required). The
classes are 45 minutes long.

The theme for Benicia Yacht Clubs “Opening day on the Straits” this year is related to the Americas Cup Finals which will be
hosted in neighboring San Francisco Bay this summer…and all the GOOD that we have to share and enjoy on the water.
The theme is: “… our cup runnith over”.
The event will be held on April 20th 2013 with the center of activity being our BENICIA YACHT CLUB.
ACTIVITIES will begin at 10:00 AM and WILL INCLUDE (but not be limited to):
• Arts and Crafts booths along the Marina
• Music by the Diablo Regional Concert Band
• The first annual Benicia Kite Board race
• Decorated Boat Parade
• Commemorative items in the ships store
• Blessing of the Fleet on the Bay

Replica of Matthew Turner Ship Building in Sausalito

While Matthew Turner built 228 vessels, many of them in Benicia late in the 19th century, none of them are known to have survived.
Benicia has the Matthew Turner Elementary School and the Matthew Turner Shipyard Park. An article in the sailing magazine Latitude
38 (www.latitude38.com) reports that by the year 2014, the San Francisco area will have a 140’ replica of his most famous ship,
the Galilee. The Galilee set records sailing to Papeete in only 22 days from West Coast
ports. As documented in the Matthew Turner article in Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org),
she sailed successfully for decades, including being chartered by the Carnegie Institute’s
Department of Terrestial Magnetism in 1905, to study the earth’s magnetism in the ocean.
She was anchored permanently in Sausalito in 1936 and she became the namesake for
their Galilee Harbor (www.galileeharbor.org). Eventually, her bow was removed and
saved by the Benicia Historical Museum. Though not on display, it is being stored under
cover behind the Camel Barn. Also, her stern was rescued by the San Francisco Historical
Society and it rests at Ft. Mason.
A group called the Educational Tall Ship (ETS) (www.educationaltallship.org) has collected over a million dollars towards building the replica. Their stated purpose is to
promote good will and maritime education, especially for youth. Again from Latitude 38,
schoonerman Alan Olson is leading the project. They have hired a naval architect who has experience in building replica wooden
vessels, and she will be built along the Sausalito waterfront, near the Corps of Army Engineers complex. Construction is scheduled
to begin in January, 2013. The ETS ship will be built to USCG requirements, using traditional methods with wood that was harvested
sustainably. Besides the many sails required of a brigantine, she will have a unique regenerative power system designed to be carbon
free. The ETS ship will have auxiliary electric motors that run from battery banks. The batteries will be recharged when the vessel
is sailing and the propellers are turning, which causes the electric motors to then become generators. They also plan to have solar
panels and wind generators to generate electricity when at dockside.
This is the largest vessel to be built in the San Francisco area since WWII. It is expected that the ship will sail frequently around the
area, but also up and down the West Coast. It will surely be exciting to see a tall ship, inspired by Matthew Turner, sailing in the Bay
area. As the vessel will have a relatively shallow draft, perhaps the Benicia Yacht Club and/or the City of Benicia can throw a big
party for it on a visit to the Benicia Harbor!

been some great club activities planned by Penny
Stell, New Years & Valentines Day. Thank you Penny!! We had a delightful turnout out for the Valentines Day dinner. While guest enjoyed their surf n turf
and company they also enjoyed the creativity and
personal touches on their tables to recreate a “most
memorable “ evening. Thank for planning such a fun
event.
Many events are coming this March…. First… March
16th Saturday, St Patrick’s Day dinner! We will be
serving a traditional Corn Beef and Cabbage Buffet
dinner downstairs!!! This will be the only dinner service for the evening and Penny has more great things
planned. There will be a band and dancing to enjoy
after dinner. See flyer in the WindWord and around
the club for the full menu and details. The price is
only $19.50! Buy your tickets early.
ATOL is presenting Flamenco! Saturday March 23rd
we will feature a traditional Spanish Flamenco show
along with a pre-fixed Spanish dinner. We will feature an array of traditional tapas & finish dinner with
Chicken Paella. Don’t miss out on your chance to
experience a taste of Spain right here in Benicia!! You
must have a reservation for the evening’s event and
space will be limited. Tickets are $45 for both dinner
& the show all inclusive. Dinner will still be served
normally upstairs.
Easter is around the corner on March 31st. This is always a great event. There is a great Easter egg hunt
for the kids!! We have an awesome buffet with delicious food that you don’t have to cook! The full menu
is also on a flyer in this month WindWord. Priced at
$32 per person, children under 12years $15.00, not
including tax and gratuity.
