Twice as nice
CHS girls defend
county championship
By Daniel Winningham
Contributions from unlikely sources often have ways of leading teams to success. A
three-pointer from the center and a blocked
shot from the shortest starter on the team?
Why not? Also, preventing a strong perimeterscoring team from getting into a groove can
prove to be helpful.
Carlinville High School’s girls’ varsity
team defeated top-seeded Southwestern High
School 39-28 Jan. 24 in Gillespie to earn its
second straight county title.
Just over two weeks ago, Southwestern
easily cruised past the CHS girls’ squad in a
home contest Jan. 14. But CHS, winners of the
2014 Macoupin County Tournament with a
one-point victory over the Piasa Birds at Bunker Hill, knew the county championship was
still their title to defend. “We talked all week
that this was our championship to defend,”
said CHS coach Darrin DeNeve. “The girls
took that to heart, played hard all week. They
were focused in their preparations, executed
the game plan and showed a lot of toughness
tonight.”
After allowing Southwestern’s junior point
guard Maddy Greeling to take a defensive rebound and go coast-to-coast for her first basket
of the game — and the Piasa Birds’ first lead,
at 6-5 — the Cavaliers responded in a big way,
scoring 15 of the next 16 points and taking a
20-7 lead. Southwestern, which tied the contest at 7-7 as Karlie Green made one of two
free throws, would get no closer than seven
points the rest of the contest.
Following Green’s free throw with 6:30 left
in the second quarter tied the contest, CHS got
a three-pointer from senior Megan Stayton to
spark a 13-0 run. CHS senior Talesha Scott
flipped the ball to Stayton after a couple of
Southwestern defenders attempted steal the
ball from her near the elbow.
The Piasa Birds missed all of their threepoint attempts in the opening half but began
getting the long shots to fall in the third quarter.
Junior Erin Laubscher’s three-pointer cut the
CHS lead to eight points at 20-12. Southwestern added two more three-pointers later in the
quarter, trimming the Cavaliers’ edge to 27-20.
Carlinville tallied the final two points of the
quarter and got a field goal from Stayton and
a baseline three-pointer from Carley Kulenkamp to push the lead to 34-20.
Southwestern went on a 6-0 run as CHS had
turnovers on three consecutive possessions,
but, following a Piasa Birds’ three-pointer
which was waved off after tipping off the top
of the backboard and falling through, Stayton
got behind the Southwestern defense a couple
of times as the Cavaliers broke a full-court
press, giving Carlinville a comfortable 38-26
lead.

fouled out with 2:08 remaining. Greeling’s
basket in the final 90 seconds closed out the
scoring for SHS, ahead of three missed oneand-one attempts by CHS.
Asked if he felt the CHS lead was safe as the
game wound down, DeNeve wasn’t sure his
team had enough points until the final seconds
ticked away. “I was comfortable with maybe
about 10 seconds left,” DeNeve said.
CHS used a different defensive approach
against Greeling. “We did a little box and
one,” DeNeve said. Carley Kulenkamp, Taylor Hannig and Talesha Scott took turns guarding Greeling, who finished the contest with 12
points. Eight of Greeling’s points came in the
final five minutes, after CHS led 34-20.

crowd you think about the girl that’s guarding her but really it’s everybody guarding
her. When she does break down the defender,
there’s somebody there to help, so it takes a

we did that this time,” DeNeve said.
DeNeve said Southwestern’s defensive
pressure gave his team problems after halftime but the miscues weren’t insurmountable.
“They did give us a little trouble in the second
half with their pressure, and we turned it over
but a couple things happened with that. When
we did turn it over, it didn’t turn into a breakaway layup for them; it went out of bounds of
something like that and we were still able to
get set up in our defense and get stops. When

Minutemen start strong, confine Cavaliers
Bunker Hill13 5 17 14 - 49
Carlinville 3 9 14 18 - 44
By Daniel Winningham
Carlinville High School’s boys’ varsity basketball team was unable to come
back from a double-digit deficit in the
first quarter as it fell 49-44 to Bunker
Hill High School in the third-place
contest Jan. 24 at the 2015 Macoupin
County Tournament hosted by Gillespie.
Joeb Easterday led CHS with 22
points while Kinney Myles finished
with 12 points. Jessy Robinson scored
seven points before fouling out in the
fourth quarter.
Adam Brewer scored 18 points to
pace the Minutemen while Stormy
Coffman added 10 points, including
two of the team’s three three-pointers.
The Minutemen, getting contributions from five different players, built a
13-1 advantage in the opening quarter.
The Cavaliers managed just one field
goal in the first eight minutes, a layup
from senior Kinney Myles. CHS made
one of four free throws in the opening
quarter and connected on just three of
10 foul shots in the first half.
After falling behind by as munch as
13 points, at 16-3, CHS used a 9-2 run
shortly before halftime to get within six
points, 18-12, at the break.
CHS tallied the first five points of
the third quarter to get within a point,
at 18-17, and was also trailing by just
a single point at 20-19, but following
an offensive foul by Jessy Robinson,
Bunker Hill scored three consecutive
field goals to take a 26-19 edge. The
hot streak continued after a bucket by
Carlinville’s Adam Walton as the Minutemen asked two more baskets and
later got a three-pointer from Storrmy
Coffman and a layup by Chase Williams to take a 35-23 advantage. Robinson’s three-pointer cut the deficit to
nine points, 35-26, before the quarter
ended.
“We battled back in the second half,”
said CHS coach Alan Cooper.
CHS got within five points twice in
the early going of the final quarter —
first on a bucket by Myles (37-32) and
later on a three-pointer by Easterday
(40-35). The Bunker Hill lead shrunk to
just four points, 43-39, after Robinson’s
made shot on an inbounds play.
However, the Cavaliers couldn’t get
any closer. A steal by Brady Jamieson
led to a couple of unsuccessful shot attempts, and CHS came up empty on the
possession. Myles’ layup attempt was
called for a jump ball as a Minutemen
defender got his hand on the ball as
Myles tried to score in the lane.
Sandwiched between Robinson
fouling out with 55.1 seconds left after picking up his fifth personal, Bunker Hill’s Adam Brewer got two field
goals to fall, giving the Minutemen
a 47-39 edge. Later, Chase Williams
converted two free throws to push the
lead to 49-39.
In the closing seconds, Easterday
was fouled on a three-point attempt
and converted all three foul shots while
Myles added a layup to close out the
scoring for CHS.
The rebound margin was close to
even but it shouldn’t have been, Cooper said. “They got extra points of it because they got second- or third-chances
with the ball,” he said. “That was the
biggest difference, and we were hurt by
free throw shooting again. If we would
have finished free throws and secure
rebounds, we wouldn’t have found ourself in a whole.”
Both teams struggled from the free
throw line, as each squad was six of 15.
The combined 12 of 30 from the foul
line was just 40 percent.
Carlinville entered the tournament as
the No. 4 seed while Bunker Hill was
No. 6. The Cavaliers finished 1-2 in the
county tournament while Bunker Hill,
in taking third place, finished 3-1.
CHS is now 3-13 on the season and
1-2 against the Minutemen this season.
Cooper said it was a mediocre effort
from his team and knows the defensive
effort must get better. “We just got to
want it more all the time,” he said.

pool play Jan. 19.
The Minutemen, who jumped
to a 10-0 advantage, led 21-20
after the first quarter and were on
top 34-30 at halftime. Gillespie
erased the four-point deficit by
outscoring Bunker Hill 13-8 in
the third quarter, then closed out
the contest by scoring 14 of 25
points in the final quarter.
Gillespie’s Evan Price finished with 17 points while Nick
Price contributed 15 points. Eli
Fox tallied nine points for the
Miners.
Bunker Hill’s Michael Yates
led all scorers with 21 points.
Teammate Dane Sellers added
13 points.
Staunton 55, Mt. Olive 47
Staunton High School started
strong on its way to an eightpoint victory. The Bulldogs led
22-13 after the first quarter and
enjoyed a 35-23 halftime edge.
Colin Fairman led the Bulldogs with 19 points.
Staunton connected on 22 of
36 free throw attempts (61.1
percent). Blaine Ray converted
13 of 18 foul shots in finishing
with 18 points.
The 22 made free throws were
the same number the Bulldogs
attempted in a loss to Bunker
Hill earlier in the tournament.
Mt. Olive’s Jake Bennett made
seven field goals on his way to
16 points. Roger Conlee scored
14 points for the Wildcats while
teammate Joey Baum added
eight points.
Mt. Olive converted more
field goals (19-18) than Staunton
and more three-pointers (2-1)
but was whistled for 24 fouls to
just 14 for Staunton.

Carlinville High School’s boys’
varsity basketball team kept
North Mac High School winless
as it earned a 49-43 victory over
the Panthers Jan. 21 in the Macoupin County Tournament in
Gillespie.
Senior Joeb Easterday tallied
a team-best 16 points, including
10 straight for CHS in the second
half. Adam Walton, Jessy Robinson and Brady Jamieson each
added eight points while Kinney
Myles finished with seven points.
The Cavaliers made four of six
free throws in the final 27.6 seconds to seal the win after the Panthers pulled within two points at
45-43 on a basket by North Mac’s
Kaine Clark.
CHS head coach Alan Cooper
said that effort-wise, it was a
well-played game by the Cavaliers. “Our effort was much better than it’s been,” Cooper said.
“We’re trying to push their effort
and get a good effort. Defensively, our effort was really good.
North Mac, for not winning a
game, runs a pretty good offense.
They made you work defensively.”
While it was an improved effort for CHS, now 3-13, Cooper
admitted there were a “few short
stretches in second and fourth
quarter with two many turnovers.”

its largest lead of the game, 3828, with eight minutes to go.
Cooper said Easterday’s shot,
plus another three-pointer early
in the fourth quarter by Walton proved extremely helpful.
“That’s big, and I think at 4138 (in the fourth quarter), Adam
Walton had a big three,” he said.
“Those were both big shots
CHS senior Jessy Robinson
said Easterday’s shot was a big
lift for the Cavaliers, and it was
similar to the previous time when
Carlinville defeated the Panthers
in come-from-behind fashion
earlier this eason. “Last time we
played them, Kinney Myles had
a dunk in the third quarter and
it was just a momentum changer
instantly,” he said. “After the momentum changes it’s our game.”
Robinson said it was a good
defensive effort. “We’ve gotta
have hustle,” Robinson said.
“We’ve got to start bringing that
effort every game and we’ll start
winning some more ballgames.”
Robinson saw one positive that
hopefully will help the team moving forward. “It’s the first game I
think all five (guys) on the floor
put 100 percent effort,” Robinson
said.
North Mac bolted to a 5-0 lead,
but then CHS began chipping
away. Carlinville took its first
lead at 7-5 following a baseline
three-pointer from Adam Walton.
The Panthers tied the contest up
at 13 apiece. CHS took control
with a 9-0, prompting a timeout
from North Mac with 5:22 left in
the second quarter.
The Cavaliers led 24-20 at halftime, as Easterday’s three-pointer
appeared online but come up just
short, grazing harmlessly off the
rim. Missing five of seven foul
shots in the closing minutes of
the second half likely prevented
CHS from enjoying a larger advantage at the break.
Cooper said CHS almost doubled up the Panthers on rebounds.
“That was really big for us,” he
said. “We’ve been stressing rebounding and getting our intensity up on defense.”
North Mac dropped to 0-13
overall and is now 0-4 in games
decided by six points or less.

CHS girls finish strong in dispatching Mt. Olive
Cavaliers score
final five points
in victory
By Daniel Winningham
Outscoring the opponent in just
one of four quarters often isn’t a
recipe for success. Couple that
with converting fewer than 33 percent of one’s free throw attempts
and the chances for victory likely
get even slimmer.
However, Carlinville High
School’s varsity basketball team
had both occur in a 42-37 win over
Mt. Olive High School Jan. 22 in
advancing to the championship
contest of the Macoupin County
Tournament Jan. 22.
Carlinville trailed after the first
quarter (9-8) and at halftime (1916) but took control of the game
with a 7-0 run to begin the third
quarter, going in front 23-19 after a three-pointer by Marley
Schmidt.
Senior Talesha Scott tallied a
game-high 22 points to pace Carlinville. Junior Marley Schmidt
added 11 points, including three
three-pointers for CHS.
CHS outscored Mt. Olive 13-4
in the third quarter and led 29-23
going into the game’s final eight
minutes after Schmidt’s threepointer swished home ahead of
the horn at the conclusion of the
third quarter. The lead grew to
10 points, at 33-23, on a basket
by Kathleen Kelly. The Cavaliers
held a comfortable 35-26 advantage when Mt. Olive took a timeout with 5:43 left.
With Mt. Olive looking as it was
on the ropes, Carlinville appeared
to be running away with another
easy win. “It’s time to put ‘em
away, who’s with me?” DeNeve
said during the break in the action.
But Mt. Olive’s fortunes
changed over the next 1:18, as
it rattled off a 10-0 run, getting
two field goals and going six for
six from the foul. “We called for
several fouls there in a stretch, and
they made all their free throws, so
give ‘em credit for drawing fouls
and hitting free throws,” he said.
“It was unfortunate for us, but we
were able to fight through their
charge.”
Mt. Olive went in front 36-35
after two free throws from sophomore Courtney Kernich. Scott put
CHS in front 37-36 with a steal
and a layup, then Kernich made
one of two foul shots with about
2:30 left to tie the contest up at 37
apiece.
Scott put the Cavaliers up for
good by hitting one of two foul
shots at the 2:20 mark, then get
two more field goals in the closing two minutes for the game’s
final margin. Her final field goal,
her 10th of the game, made it 4237 and gave her 22 points on the
night.
Schmidt said Mt. Olive provided Carlinville with a challenging
contest. “We knew that they were
a good team coming in here; we
knew that they were going to pressure us, and so over the last week
in practice we’ve been working
on picking up the ball and being
strong, to be expecting the pressure,” she said.
Despite trailing at halftime,
Schmidt said the message was for
CHS to maintain its composure.
“At halftime, coach told us to keep

our composure,” Schmidt said.
“In the fourth quarter, that was the
main thing.”
DeNeve said the team’s defensive approach after halftime
helped CHS swing things in its favor. “We went to a trapping style
defense right at the beginning
of the third quarter and created
some turnovers, got some transition buckets,” he said. “They are
full of sophomores, we’re full of
veterans, and it was time for us to
take control of the game on both
ends. We didn’t play with a lot of
composure on offense in the first
half and let them be the aggressive
team, and we said we definitely
wanted to switch that around in
the second half.”
CHS senior Megan Stayton
was limited to just four points but
found other ways to contribute,
assisting on the Cavaliers’ first
two baskets after halftime and
collecting several key defensive
rebounds to limit Mt. Olive possessions to one-and-done. “She
handles the pressure really well,
she’s a big strong target, and she
doesn’t make too many mistakes.
She’s absolutely crucial when
we’re seeing that sort of pressure.”
CHS made just five of 16 free
throws. The Wildcats connected
on nine of 13 attempts, including
eight of nine in the final quarter.
Zoe Murphy led Mt. Olive with
11 points while Jill Niehaus contributed 10 points in the loss.
the contest averaging better than
53.4 points per contest and was
held to fewer than 30 points for the
first time all season. The 28 points
scored by the Piasa Birds were the
fewest since a Feb. 7, 2013, 42-21
regional loss to Litchfield High
School, a span of 54 games.
Southwestern was 17-5 in its last
22 games played on neutral courts.
The Piasa Birds were without
starter Kelsey Rhoads, who dislocated her knee earlier in the week.
Carlinville improved to 21-4
with the victory, its fourth straight.
Player reaction
Following the victory, DeNeve
and several CHS players appeared
on WSMI-FM to answer a few
questions about the victory.
“It means a lot,” Kulenkamp
said. “Doing it once was a big deal,
but coming back, being able to defend our title, it’s a great feeling.”
Defense and rebounding played
an important in the CHS win, Kulenkamp said. “We crashed the
boards really well, even when our
shots weren’t falling,” she said.
“Amazing, I love every second
of it,” said junior Marley Schmidt,
who blocked a three-pointer in the
third quarter and finished the contest with three points.
Schmidt banked home the gamewinner against Southwestern as
CHS escaped with a 33-32 win
in the 2014 final. The experience
of that game, and others, Schmidt
said, proves that anything can happen. She didn’t want to be overconfident once the team took a big
lead this time. “We were confident,
but we didn’t let them get in our
heads,” she said.
Stayton is very happy for her
teammates on the repeat county
championship. “It’s like cloud
nine,” she said, adding it’s an exciting feeling.
Stayton said the team was more
prepared than it’s previous loss to
Southwestern, 48-27, on Jan. 14. “I
think we were just so much better
prepared,” Stayton said. “We had a
better game plan. We knew what to
attack. We knew what our strengths
were and where to capitalize on
them. We were fired up knowing this
was our championship to defend.”
Stayton said Southwestern has
“some of the best players not only
in the county but in this complete
area. They are always impressive,

Carlinville High School’s girls’
varsity basketball team used 8-0
and 9-0 runs in the first half to
bolt to a 36-11 advantage after two
quarters Jan. 20 vs. Staunton High
School on the way to a convincing
victory at the Macoupin County
Tournament hosted by Gillespie
High School.
By the time the game concluded,
CHS earned a 55-23 victory in improving to 19-4 overall this season.
CHS got a team-high 18 points
from Megan Stayton and another
15 points from Talesha Scott. Taylor Hannig converted two threepointers on her way to eight points
off the bench.
CHS head coach Darrin DeNeve credited the team’s defense.
“I thought defensively, we were
really good,” DeNeve said. “We
had a good effort and concentrated well. We had good vision, and
knew where we were supposed to
be, we helped on the screens, a nice
effort.”
There were several lopsided
scores throughout various points in
the game — 12-1 and later, 14-3 after the opening quarter, 23-3, 26-6
and 44-13 after an 8-2 burst to start
the second half which featured two
more CHS three-pointers.
“Offensively, we made some
very nice interior passes, it was
nice to see some girls hit some
shots,” DeNeve said.
In perhaps a statistical oddity,
Carlinville piled up 55 points without a single trip to the free throw
line. The five three-pointers made
were a season-high for Cavaliers.
“Overall, it was a good game,” he
said. “(There’s) not much to complain about, a good team victory.”
Staunton got a team-best seven
points from Devin Barrett. Emil
Redeker added six points.

we did break the pressure, we were
able to get breakaway layups ourselves.”
Getting shots to fall, both during the key second quarter run and
early in the fourth quarter, made his
job easier. “Basketball, more than
anything else, is all about shooting.
We hit some shots and they didn’t,”
DeNeve said.
Stayton, who passed 1,000
points for her CHS career on her
three-pointer in the second quarter, finished with 11 points. Stayton
converted five of six field goals,
and is now three for seven on threepointers this season. Scott also had
11 points, as she made three of nine
shots. Hannig made two of three
shots and finished with five points.
Senior Kathleen Kelly collected
a team-high nine rebounds. Scott
finished with eight rebounds, including three of the team’s five
boards at the offensive end; Scott
also led the team with five steals
and four assists.
CHS outrebounded the Piasa
Birds 35-20. The Cavaliers committed 19 turnovers to just 11 for
Southwestern.
Southwestern, now 22-3, entered

and they’re great girls on top of
that.”
Scott is proud of what her and her
teammates have accomplished so
far during the 2014-15 season. “It
feels great because we’re seniors
and we’ve made big accomplishments this year,” she said. “
A balanced scoring effort and
fewer turnovers were the key to the
victory, according to Scott. “All of
our players scored, and we handled
the ball better than when we played
them the first time,” she said.
Scott spoke of the challenge of
bringing the basketball up after a
defensive rebound. “It’s pretty difficult because they’re smacking
at you. The refs call some (fouls),
they don’t call some, it’s just really hard to hold your composure,”
Scott said.
Senior Taylor Hannig is in her
first year with the team. She started
at CHS for the 2013-14 spring semester and played on the school’s
softball team last spring. “They
welcomed me in as part of their
family,” she said. “Being on this
team means the world to me because we’ve come together so
closely.”

Player of the Week
Carley
Kulenkamp has been selected as this week’s
Country Financial/
Gary Edwards Carlinville
Basketball
Player of the Week.
The award alternates each week
between the boys’
Carley
and girls’ basketball
Kulenkamp teams at Carlinville
High School.
Kulenkamp, along with help from Taylor
Hannig and Talesha Scott, was given the
job of guarding Southwestern’s Maddie
Greeling in the Macoupin County Tournament Championship win on Jan. 24. Greeling was held to about half her scoring average, largely due to Kulenkamp’s work on
defense. The 5-foot-11 senior guard also
scored five big second-half points, including a three-point basket at a key moment.
“Carley is an excellent example of a
player who plays and excels at multiple
sports, which is something that we really
need a lot of in our athletic department,”
Carlinville head coach Darrin DeNeve
said. “She is an excellent student and an
even better person. We’ve been fortunate
to have her in our program the past four
years.”
Kulenkamp received a T-shirt courtesy
of Edwards, a Country Financial agent in
Carlinville, and a large pizza compliments
of Little Italy’s Pizza in Carlinville.

REQUEST RELEASE OF FUNDS
January 29, 2015
City of Carlinville
550 North Broad
Carlinville, IL 62626
217-854-4076
TO ALL INTERESTED AGENCIES, GROUPS and PERSONS:
On or about February 14, 2015
the City of Carlinville will request
the Department of Commerce and
Economic Opportunity to release
federal funds under Title I of the
Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, as amended, for
the following project: Water Main
Replacement along North West
Street and North High Street.
It has been determined that such
request for release of funds will not
constitute an action significantly
affecting the quality of the human
environment and accordingly the
City of Carlinville has decided not
to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement under the National
Environmental Policy Act of 1969
(PL 91-190).
An Environmental Review Record respecting the within project
has been made by the City of Carlinville which documents the environmental review of the project and
more fully sets forth the reasons
why such Statement is not required.
This Environmental Review Record
is on file at the above address and
is available for public examination
and copying upon request at City
Hall between the hours of 9:00a.m.
and 3:00p.m.
No further environmental review
of such project is proposed to be
conducted prior to the request for
release of federal funds.
All interested agencies, groups
and persons disagreeing with this
decision are invited to submit written comments for consideration by
the City of Carlinville. Such written comments should be received
at City Hall on or before February
14, 2015. All such comments so
received will be considered and the
City of Carlinville will not request the
release of federal funds or take any
administrative action on the within
project prior to the date specified in
the preceding sentence.
The City of Carlinville will undertake the project described above
with the Community Development
Assistance Program fund from
the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development
(DCEO) under Title I of the Housing
and Community Development Act
of 1974, as amended. The City of
Carlinville is certifying to DCEO that
the City of Carlinville and Deanna
Demuzio in her official capacity as
Mayor consent to accept the jurisdiction of the federal courts if an
action is brought to enforce responsibilities in relation to environmental
review, decision-making and action,
and that these responsibilities have
been satisfied. The legal effect of
the certification is that upon its approval the City of Carlinville may
use the CDAP fund and DCEO will
have satisfied its responsibilities
under the National Environmental
Policy Act of 1969.
DCEO will accept an objection to
its approval only if it is one of the
following bases; a) that the certification was not in fact executed by
the certifying officer or other officer
or applicant approved by DCEO;
b) the applicant has failed to make
one of the two findings pursuant to
58.40 or to make the written determination required by 58.35, 58.47
or 58.53 for the project as applicable; c) that the applicant’s environmental review record for the project
indicated omission of a required decisions finding or step applicable to
the project in the environmental review process; d) the applicant has
committed funds or incurred costs
not authorized by this part before
release of funds and approval of the
environmental certification by the
state. Objections must be prepared

the required procedure (24 CFR

Alton Road Runners honor CHS athletes CHS wrestling hosts Quincy Notre Dame, Riverton
By Daniel Winningham
In early December, the Alton Road
Runners Club honored a boys’ and
girls’ cross country runner from each
of 13 area schools.
The event, aptly named the Alton
Road Runners Runner of the Year banquet, has been held for the last several
years at the Eagles Club in Alton. The
athlete and their parents are treated to
a buffet-style fried chicken and pasta
meal followed by a guest speaker.
This year’s guest speaker was Dustin
Davis a former Edwardsville High
School cross country standout. Davis was a 2A All State runner in 2005
when he ran 14:40 and finished 16th
at the State Meet. He related stories of
his running and his most recent challenge of fighting a battle with cancer.
Next, the evening’s focus turned
to recognizing the achievements of
one boys’ and girls’ runner from each
school. Area high schools involved
in addition to Carlinville were Alton,
Civic Memorial, Edwardsville, Jerseyville, Triad, Gillespie, Metro-East
Lutheran, East Alton-Wood River,
Carrollton, Southwestern, Roxana
and Litchfield.
The Carlinville High School picks
for the Runners of the Year were
juniors Cory Landon and Colleen
Madden. Both received a plaque
and a running tech shirt. “The Carlinville community was represented
very well, as Carlinville was the only
school at the banquet to have both
their male and female athletes touting All State credentials,” said CHS
coach Charlie Helton.
When the 2014 cross country season finished up, Landon was 23rd
at state in 15:28 while Madden took
22nd in 18:23.
Another honor for the Carlinville
athletes was having legendary coach
Jim Wigger and his wife Emily in
attendance as their special guests.

Colleen Madden, Jim Wigger, Cory Landon and Charlie Helton at
the Alton Road Runners Club dinner in December.
“They were able to sit with the Landon family during the banquet, and it
was really a special honor for our
cross country program to have them
supporting us,” Helton said.
Wigger was the coach of Alton HS
cross country and track programs in
the 1960s and 1970s. “At one point
in the 60s, Jim’s track teams won the
State Track Meet three times and finished in the top four seven of those 10
years before there was class track in
Illinois,” Helton said.
Mr. Wigger also was a great influence on Carlinville coach Charlie
Helton when he competed in cross
country as a high school athlete. “I
didn’t have a coach at Carrollton and
my father introduced me to Coach
Wigger. He gave me sound training
advice yet he didn’t do everything
for me. His philosophy of coaching
has definitely influenced the way our
program is structured today. Coach always believed in giving his runners a
certain amount of autonomy and thus
created ownership in each athlete’s
training. The more an athlete puts
priority on making wise training decisions, the more confidence they have
in their races,” said Helton.
“We were so blessed to have Coach
Wigger come out for an early season meet and cheer on our boys and
girls,” Helton continued. “The team
really took to him and a relationship
was formed. I was so proud of our
team recognizing his expertise and
his sincere desire for their success.
The season culminated with Jim and
his wife both coming to Peoria to
encourage our athletes. They had not
attended the state meet as a couple
since 1976. It was sure great to have
them in our corner. The results speak
for themselves as all three athletes
had personal best times and two athletes obtained their first HS State cross
country medals. Jim was able to come
to the starting box at the starting line
and give the athletes a bit of last-minute encouragement.”
