Prairie Storm squad includes Macoupin players
By Daniel Winningham
The Prairie Storm 16/18 and younger girls’ competitive fastpitch softball
team wrapped up its summer ball season Sunday, July 20, with an 18 and
younger ASA tournament championship in Pontiac. The squad also finished fifth in the 18 and younger ASA
State Tournament in Galesburg the
previous weekend and ended with an
overall summer record of 26-15-3.
The squad includes players from
Girard, Raymond, Auburn, Chatham,
Nokomis, Griggsville, Rochester,
Rushville, Waverly and Winchester.
Prairie Storm plays games all over
central Illinois. The team travels to
tournaments from the O’Fallon/St.
Louis area to Peoria and from Galesburg to Champaign.
“We spend most of our summer
playing softball,” said coach Fred Mulacek, an assistant coach at North Mac
High School during the school year.
The squad is now taking a short
break before resuming later next
month.
“We will be having tryouts to fill
a few vacancies, and then will begin
a league in Decatur that plays once a
week starting mid-August,” Mulacek
said.
The team had five players that will
be playing softball for four different
Midwest college programs in 201415. Ten team members have received
conference recognition for their performance in high school softball.
Tryouts set for Aug. 2 The squad will hold tryouts for
16/18 and younger eligible players for
games this fall/winter/summer at Brett
Maguire Softball Field located at 231
W. Fortune St. at the high school on
Sunday, Aug. 3, from 2 to 5 p.m. and
Thursday, Aug. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Those interested may contact coach
Fred Mulacek at 217-741-5223 or
at fredmulacek@yahoo.com to preregister or to arrange an alternate tryout time for those unavailable for the
scheduled dates. Players wishing to
try out may attend either or both tryout dates.

Carlinville softball player contributes to Capital City’s success
The Capital City Blitz girls softball team, comprised of 13-yearold girls, participated in the ESPN
Road to Orlando 13-under World
Series held July 12-19. The Blitz
finished 6-3 overall and took second place.
Alyssa DeSpain, who will be
a freshman at Carlinville High
School, was one of several players
on the team. In addition to Carlinville and Springfield, the squad
includes players from Bloomington, Riverton, Washington and Williamsville. This is the first time the
team has traveled to Florida, and
the squad also travels to other states
to compete.
DeSpain, who throws and hits
right-handed, is a pitcher. She
also plays first base and outfield.
The event in Florida is a national
tournament the Blitz squad attended to compete against girls in their
own age group.
In addition to Illinois, several
states were represented, including Missouri, Pennsylvania, North
Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Texas, Ohio, Georgia and Virginia.
The squad began with three
games in pool play, going 2-1 and
earning a second-place finish.
Here’s a summary of how the
team fared in each game:
July 13
The Blitz began with a 7-6 loss to
a Florida squad, the Sunrise Thunder. Capital City led 5-2 early but
was unable to hold back the Thunder offense. Kaileigh Brinkman and
Kaileigh Moser both had two hits
for Capital City. Danielle Dennis,
Alyssa DeSpain and Moser drove in
runs. Sara Crebo threw six innings,
walking two and struck out three.
Later the same day, the Blitz defeated Sudden Impact of Georgia
8-6. Capital City led 7-0 and then
held off a late rally for the victory.
Jaxynn Dyson led the way with
three runs scored, two hits and two
RBIs. DeSpain and Weller also
drove in two runs each. Dennis was
the winning pitcher as she allowed
three earned runs in four innings.
Crebo entered the game in relief
and earned the save.
July 14
The Blitz defeated the Pittsburgh
Shock 7-3. Capital City tallied three
runs in the bottom half of the sixth
inning to pull away. Lexus Tennison and Emma Walbert both had
two hits. DeSpain was the winning
pitcher, going four innings and allowing three runs. Crebo threw two
innings and finished with the save.
July 16
Capital City earned an extra inning
victory over Rock 2K of Pennsylvania.
The contest was scoreless after seven
innings and international tie-breaker
rules we used to determined a winner.
Rock 2K was given a runner on second
base to start its trip to the plate but after
a failed sacrifice bunt, the Blitz recorded a double play and then Crebo retired
the next hitter for the final out.
With the Blitz batting for the win,
they got a bunt from Moser, then a
run-scoring single by Dennis to win
the contest 1-0.
July 17
Capital City got past Orion Hunter of Virginia 7-3. The team scored
runs in every inning. Crebo went
the distance, throwing five innings.
Dyson scored two runs and had two
RBIs. DeSpain contributed a home
run and three RBIs.
Capital City tallied four runs in
the fourth inning and added a single
run to take a 5-0 lead over Wellington Wild of Florida. A three-run
homer cut the lead to 5-3. Dennis
threw 5 2/3 innings and allowed
just three hits. Crebo relieved Dennis and earned the save.
July 18
The Blitz fell to Mizuno Edge,
a Florida team, 10-3. Capital City
scored three times in the third inning to rally from a 2-0 deficit and
briefly held a 3-2 lead. However,
the Edge squad scored 10 times on
12 hits over the next two innings.
Brinkman, Dyson and DeSpain
contributed hits for the Blitz.
The Capital City Blitz of Springfield includes, front, from left, coach Paul Walters, Emma Walbert of Williamsville, Kaileigh Moser of Williamsville, Abigail Walter of Riverton, Danielle Dennis of Williamsville,
Lexus Tennison of Bloomington and coach Brett Tennison; back, coach Chuck Walbert, Alyssa DeSpain,
Jaxynn Dyson of Bloomington, MacKenzie McCormick of Williamsville, Sara Crebo of Washington, Katie
Weller of Springfield, Ashleigh McDermott of Williamsville, Kaileigh Brinkman of Pontiac and head coach
Steve Dennis.

July 19
The loss to the Mizuno Edge put
Capital City in the loser’s bracket
and earned the team a rematch
against the Wellington Wild. The
Blitz trailed 5-1 but rallied for an
8-5 lead. Weller contributed a teamhigh four RBIs while DeSpain finished with two RBIs.
The Blitz took on the Mizuno
Edge again for the USSSA 13U national championship. Capital City’s
offense was unable to get going in
a 12-0 loss.
“We would like to congratulate
the girls on another great season
as well as an unbelievable finish to
the season,” said head coach Steve
Dennis. “It was nice to see how the
Blitz players stacked up against
players of the same age group
across the country.”
Dennis was pleased with the
team’s finish in Florida.
“To take home a second place
finish at one of the most prestigious
tournaments across the country is
an unbelievable accomplishment,”
Dennis said. “These young ladies
should be extremely proud of themselves.”
The coaching staff also thanked
the parents and family members
who attended the tournament
and made the trip to Florida possible.

LCCC hosts 17th annual USTA event
By Daniel Winningham
Each summer, for more than
the past decade and a half, professional tennis has made an
appearance close to Macoupin
County.
Lewis and Clark Community
College in Godfrey hosted the
17th annual Men’s Pro Tennis
Classic at its Andy Simpson
Tennis Complex July 21-27.
The event is part of the International Tennis Federation’s Pro
Circuit.
Doug Stotler, in his second stint as athletic director
and men’s basketball coach at
Lewis and Clark, says there are
talented players that participate
each summer.
“This is the minor leagues of
professional tennis,” he said.
“These are professionals, but
you also have a lot of collegians
that play as amateurs. You’re
talking about some of the best
tennis players in the NCAA
level coming to this event. It’s
a high quality event, and has
been for close to 15 years.”
The event is sponsored by
the United States Tennis Association.
Singles semifinal matches
took place July 26, which had
players dealing with much
warmer conditions than earlier
in the competition.
Daniel Nguyen, 23, of California, playing for the third
time in Godfrey, defeated
Mitchell Frank 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2)
to earn the single’s final July
27. Frank was seeking a second
straight singles title after earning a three-set match win July
20 at an event in Oklahoma.
Nguyen won his three
matches in straight sets, then
had a three-hour semifinal victory over Luke Bambridge.
Nguyen, now 22-14 this year in
singles, has two other victories
in the ITF Pro Circuit.
Prior to Sunday’s final, just
one of Frank’s previous matches went into a third set. Frank,
12-4 overall in ITF Pro Circuit
matches this season, has also
competed in doubles matches.
The doubles final wrapped
up July 26, with Luke Bambridge and Liam Broady, both
of Great Britain, earning a decision over Ronnie Schneider
and Brett Clark.
The weather delayed tournament action late in the week. It
began raining in the afternoon
July 25, which forced a few of
the matches to get pushed back
Friday afternoon.
Players from the University
of Illinois-Champaign men’s
team competed in the event but
were unable to advance to the
semifinals.
“It’s going very well,” said
Lewis and Clark Community
College women’s tennis coach
Jim Hunstein. “There were a
number of upsets early, which
is good, because you never
know how it’s going to play
out. The weather’s been cooperative. We had a little rain yesterday but we worked around
that. The competition’s been
good. Nobody got hurt. All
those things are positives.”
This is Hunstein’s third year
as tennis coach at LCCC. The
women’s team finished the
2013-14 season tied for 20th
in the nation during the NJCAA D-I National Championship tournament in Texas. The
LCCC men’s team finished
17th in a similar NJCAA D-1
event.
Hunstein says the event is
helpful for LCCC in getting its
name out there, and bringing
people to the tennis facility.
Dorchester
kittenball
games set
for Aug. 1-3
“I think it adds to recognition for the school,” Hunstein
said. “People recognize that
tennis is a big thing here. We
have a beautiful facility. It’s
as nice as I’ve seen anywhere
that we play. Junior college,
college, everywhere. I think it
brings in a lot of people from
the area, not just Godfrey and
Alton but the surrounding area,
up from St. Louis. It makes us
more prominent in the tennis
community, and that’s great.
LCCC doesn’t charge for the
event, and Hunstein thinks that
may bring more people to campus.
“It gets more people out
here,” he said. “It’d be great
to be able to charge for it. The
facility is set up that way. But
you charge $5 a (person) it’s
only a couple hundred bucks.
In the overall scheme of things,
I’d rather have people coming here knowing it’s free and
you can just walk in, and enjoy
themselves rather than worrying about admission.”
Tennis clinic July 19
On July 19, LCCC hosted
an indoor tennis clinic with
several of the players helping
out. Also, there were a couple
of individuals from the University of Illinois men’s team assisting.
“It’s just a community thing,
get kids in there in the gym, hitting some tennis balls, learning
some basic stuff. It just brings
more people to the community,
which is good,” Hunstein said.
The clinic, which is open to
anyone, had kids from Alton
participating this year.
Kittenball will be played Friday through Sunday, Aug. 1-3, in
Dorchester as part of the Dorchester
Homecoming festivities.
Children who are not yet in
high school will play at 4 p.m.

Have Your Hearing Checked
as Routinely as Teeth and Eyes!
Question 1. When should I have my hearing checked?
Hearing should be checked routinely throughout your lifespan, just like eyes and
teeth, to maintain “maximal hearing and listening” and to avoid the consequences of mishearing in business, social, and recreational settings.
Question 2. How can I tell if my hearing has changed?
Most of the time you can’t tell! Changes in hearing generally occur gradually-one
hardly notices a change unless it’s a sudden onset. Indeed, if you are mishearing,
it is more likely to be noticed by your family and friends before you’re aware
of it.
Question 3. Who currently uses hearing technology and is that relevant to me?
Frankly, it’s often impossible to tell who is wearing hearing aids because 21st century styles and technologies often render hearing technology virtually undetectable to others. In fact, many celebrities and performers use customized hearing
systems to hear and listen maximally while performing as they cannot afford to
miss a sound cue, direction, or discussion.
Question 4: When should I use hearing technology?
Whenever the situation and/or the limitations of your hearing range compromise
“maximal hearing and listening”, or increase your risk of mishearing.
