CHS hosts
Early Meet

A week after piling up 20 firstquarter points in its opening game
victory, Carlinville High School’s
offense continued to set the tone,
tallying 22 first-quarter points on
its way to a 57-22 victory at Vandalia High School, Sept. 6.
The varsity contest began Sept.
5 but after play was halted with
11:32 left in the second quarter due
to lightning, the game was unable
to be finished that evening. Instead,
CHS traveled to back to Vandalia
Sept. 6 to finish the remainder of
the game, adding four more touchdowns — three in the second quarter and another on the opening kick
of the second half — to build an
overwhelming 57-8 advantage.
Carlinville ground out 269 yards
rushing on 30 carries. Two seniors
collected 230 of those yards on just
19 carries. Garet Gwillim led the
way with 122 yards on just eight
carries. He ran for two first-half
touchdowns and got CHS on the
board with a 74-yard touchdown
reception. Kinney Myles chipped
in with 108 yards on 11 carries and
had two second quarter scores.

The Carlinville Early Meet included a mixed junior high race,
plus separate girls and boys races
for the high schoolers.
Carlinville’s Cory Landon won
the boys race in 15 minutes, 54.86
seconds.
Other CHS finishers were Nolan
Kreipe (fourth, 16:32.27); Jason
Landon (15th, 18:24.39); Charles
Helton IV (17th, 18:43.04); Samuel Mock (29th, 19:44.46); Kodi
Boston (43rd, 22:12.79); Grayson
Armour (45th, 22:32); and Seth
Evans (53rd, 25:41.25).
The boys tallied 62 points to finish third in the seven-team competition, just behind Jersey Community
High School (61 points). Rochester
won the team competition with 36
points. Staunton was seventh with
194 points. Sixty-two boys competed in the three mile boys race.

CHS golf seeks
improvement
as season
progresses
Carlinville High School’s golf
team began practice Aug. 13. That
gave the team almost two full
weeks of practice before the season
was supposed to start.
Logan Ridenour returns for his
third year as coach of the CHS golf
team.
Early on, the primary focus during practice sessions has been
technique, according to Ridenour.
“Many of the golfers are in their first
year on the team so we have been
working to refine their swings.”
There are six boys and five girls
out for the team this year. “We will
be taking full squads to each boys
and girls meets,” Ridenour said. In
2013, there were seven golfers on
the team.
Boys on this year’s roster are Alphonso Anderson, Nick Bohannon,
Payton Jamieson, Lucas Mefford,
Eric Ware and Colton Winters
For the first time in school
history, CHS will be fielding a
girls’ team. Two girls who played
softball in the spring — Baylee
Hughes and Taylor Hannig — are
joining Ali Hurley, Kaiah Walstatter and Ashlee Wendt on the team
this fall.
Seniors from the 2013 team that
graduated earlier this year were
Chris Callahan, Brennan Hurley,
Eric Pingolt and Ashley Starr. Pingolt’s season finished up at the state
competition.
Before postseason competition
starts in early October, there are
more than 15 matches on the schedule for the 2014 season. Just four
matches are scheduled for the Carl-

inville Country Club.
The team’s first match of the season was set for Aug. 25 at Shoal
Creek, though that was cancelled
due to extreme heat. CHS was
scheduled to take on Greenville and
Southwestern Aug. 26. The match
was pushed back until Aug. 27 due
to the heat, and it appeared for a
little while that match wouldn’t get
played, or there would be at least a
delay, as threatening clouds moved
into the area. A little rain fell but it
wasn’t enough to prevent stopping
the match.
The next home match for Carlinville is set for Monday, Sept. 15,
when Litchfield and Southwester
visit Carlinville. Other home matches are Tuesday, Sept. 23, against
Hillsboro, Litchfield and Mt. Olive
and Thursday, Oct. 2, against Hillsboro, East Alton and Carrollton.
The boys conference meet is
Sept. 29 at The Rail in Springfield
while the girls conference meet is
in Litchfield. Last year, Wendt won
the SCC meet.
“The conference championship
is determined at the conference
meet,” Ridenour said. “We will
compete, but I see Greenville and
Roxana competing for the conference title on the boys’ side. On the
girls’ side I truly believe it is anyone’s to grab. Pana and Roxana are
the front runners team-wise.”
Ridenour is seeking improvement each time the squad competes
this season. “My expectations are
for both the boys and girls teams to
improve each time we go out,” he
said. “There is not much match experience other than Ashlee Wendt
and Lucas Mefford.”
Cavaliers fall to Hiltoppers, 2-1
On Monday evening, Carlinville High School’s varsity boys
soccer team was playing for the
first time since Sept. 3, and was
attempting to snap a three-game
losing streak.
However, the Cavaliers were
unable to go in front in a 2-1
home loss to Hillsboro High
School Sept. 8.
First-half goals were scored
by Hillsboro’s Mitchell Beck in
the fifth minute and Carlinville’s
Koltan Page, who got an assist
from Pietro Lentini in the 10th
minute.
In the second half, Hillsboro’s
Tyten Nalley sent a centering shot
toward the goal which went off
the hand’s of CHS goalie Logan
Turley. On another shot attempt
shortly before Hillsboro took
the lead, Turley reached high to
make the stop and the soccer ball
went off his fingertips and out of
bounds near the goal for a Hillsboro corner kick.

for CHS in place of Kris Bettis,
who injured his ankle in practice.
Bettis attended the game but was
on crutches. Turley finished the
contest with five saves. Hillsboro
goalie Matthew O’Guinn recorded nine saves.
Lentini had seven of Carlinville’s 10 shots on goal. On several occasions, he controlled the
soccer ball in the penalty box
area and looked to pass to a nearby teammate.
Carlinville, which has now
dropped four straight, is now
1-5-1 overall and 1-1 in the South
Central Conference. Hillsboro is
now 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference competition.
Carlinville had eight corner
kicks while the Hiltoppers had
two throughout the game. Both
teams had five direct kicks.
Lentini took the corner kicks
for CHS and the Cavaliers got
shots on goal but were unable to
beat O’Guinn. Carlinville had a
chance early in the first half but
the shot was turned away on a
diving stop by O’Guinn to his
left. Lentini’s shot on goal was
turned aside by O’Guinn as time
expired.

and-six, then stopped the Vandals on the next four third-down
attempts. While the home team’s
offense struggled, CHS started
finding the end zone, quickly.
Gwillim’s two scores, a reception and 43-yard run, with
two-point conversions on both,
went ahead 16-8. The Cavaliers
would add 34 more first-half
points in the blowout victory.
CHS quarterback Joeb Easterday completed 10 of 14 passes
for two touchdowns and 188
yards. Seventy-four of those
yards came on a pitch-and-catch
by Gwillim, which went for the
Cavaliers’ first touchdown. His
only turnover, an errant pass
picked off by Vandalia defender Robby Lott, got VHS on the
board as Lott ran 45 yards into
the end zone to get the Vandals
on the board.
The Cavaliers’ defense limited Nestleroad to just four
completions on 16 attempts. He
had one touchdown and one in-
terception. Jesse Robinson collected three tackles and had an
interception. Jacob Dixon, Dylan Chism, Gwillim, Zach Rogers and R.C. Kirk each had one
sack for CHS and the defense
combined for nine tackles-forloss. Chism lead the way with
10 total tackles — one solo and
nine assists. Mitchell Bolomey
and Matt Bolomey both contributed six tackles for CHS.
There were just three penalties
handed out in the game: two for
15 yards for CHS and just one
for five yards for the Vandals.

and a 46-yard fumble return midway through the final quarter to
close out the game’s scoring.

Greenville (2-0) Sept. 12 at 7

If the first two weeks of the 2014
football season are any indication
of how this Friday’s varsity football contest between Carlinville
and Greenville will shake out,
there’s bound to be plenty of points
scored.
Both teams have scored at least
56 points in each of its first two
games of the season and both
squads have allowed an average of
31 points scored against them.
CHS head coach Chad Easterday
knows his team will have to limit
the Comets’ offense. “Greenville
has a very high powered offense,”
Easterday said. “I think the focus
will be on shutting done or slowing
done their passing attack.”
Through two games, Carlinville is
averaging 60.5 points per game on
offense. Defensively, the Cavaliers
have allowed 31 points per contest,
though since allowing 40-first half
points in its home opener against
Roxana, the CHS defense has allowed just one touchdown from
scrimmage in its last six quarters.
Vandalia scored on fumble and interception returns when the CHS
offense was on the field.
Greenville’s offense is faring
slightly better, getting 66.5 points
per game. The Comets have also allowed 31 points on average through
the first two weeks of 2014.
Greenville’s average margin of
victory after two games is 35.5
points while Carlinville’s average
win margin is 29.5 points.
Greenville began the season with
a 56-28 road win at Litchfield.
Last week, the Comets tallied 11
touchdowns in a 77-34 defeat of
Southwestern. The Comets, who
are coached by Todd Hutchinson,
finished 12-1 in 2013.
Carlinville is 5-6 against Greenville in 11 regular season matchups
since 2000. The teams didn’t play
in 2001, 2005 or 2006. Since 2000,
the losing team has failed to reach
double digits in points scored on
just two occasions, when CHS lost
33-7 in 2008 and then 32-7 the following season.
CHS is 3-1 in the previous four
matchups at Greenville. Two
years ago, the Cavaliers defeated
the Comets 59-14. In 2010, CHS
dropped a 24-22 decision in Greenville.
Just two of the contests have been
decided by three or fewer points —
a 16-13 CHS home win in 2002 and
the previously mentioned 24-22
win by the Comets four years ago.
This will be the 10th time since
2000 that the squads will have
played during the second week of
September.

CHS volleyball wins home opener
Carlinville High School’s varsity
volleyball team began the 2014 season at home earlier this month.
The Cavaliers got past Greenville High School in a South Central Conference match Sept. 2. CHS
won 25-11, 25-12.
In the opening game, CHS
jumped to a 7-0 edge and later led
16-4. Greenville took a time-out at
17-7 but was unable to challenge
the Cavaliers in the first game.
In the second contest, CHS took
the early advantage but Greenville battled back to keep things
somewhat close. The Comets were
within four points on a couple occasions, at 12-8, and later 13-9. In
the end, though, CHS took control
to earn the match win in front of its
home crowd.
Head coach Fran Struble was
pleased with the team’s effort. “We
looked good,” she said. “We played
really intense the first game, just
pounded the ball. Second game, in
my opinion, they used too many
tips. They’re big hitters and I expect that they terminate, just get up
and hit the ball.”
Struble said the team’s serving
was good, and they had the opportunity to work on things they’ve
been honing in on during practice.
“We’re making sure serve receive
patterns are in there and footwork
is working,” she said.
Freshman Alyssa DeSpain began
serving for CHS and turned in 18
service points, which Struble said
was “pretty impressive.” DeSpain
tallied seven aces.
Megan Stayton finished with four
service points and two aces.
Kathleen Kelly collected teambest six kills. She also contributed
six service points and an ace. Talesha Scott finished with four kills
while Stayton and Kulenkamp had
three kills in the match win.
Kulenkamp led the team with 11
assists.
Kelly and Carley Kulenkamp
both collected two stuff blocks
apiece while Grace Zachary had
one stuff block.
Hillsboro traveled to Carlinville
Sept. 4.
The CHS varsity team traveled to
Edwardsville for a two-day tournament Sept. 5 and 6.
Struble says the tournament gives
the team an opportunity to face
stronger competition. “We’ll work
on communication, we’ll build that
defense where we can pick up everything off the floor,” she said.
“We go down there and compete
against the good teams. Get in there
and give them everything we’ve
got. It’s a good testing ground.
We’re gonna be against teams that
are fast, fast, fast, can we get the
block there.”

CHS was third in the girls’ competition with 68 points. Rochester,
which had all five of its runners finish
in the top-13, took first with 37 points
followed by Litchfield (64 points).
Staunton finished with 189 points to
take seventh, just five points ahead of
Greenville. Seventy-six girls competed
in the three-mile race.
CMS boys second
Carlinville Middle School’s boys
were second in the two-mile middle
junior high school race, finishing with
35 points. Williamsville won with
26 points. Auburn took third with 80
points.
Jacob Landon took first (12:51.68)
while Bailey Lippold (13:16.15) and
Briley Roper (13:30.74) were fourth
and fifth, respectively. Other CMS
boys finishing were: Cale Williams
(14th, 16:20.12); Jay Rosentreter (15th,
16:23.58); Cameron Strubbe (16th,
16:28.46); Jacob Bray (20th, 17:04.45);
Andrew DeNeve (21st, 17:05.34); Harry Frye (27th, 19:46.88); Ashton Graves
(29th, 20:12.61); and Matt Reynolds
(31st, 21:34.47). Thirty-two boys finished the race.
Carlinville’s middle schoolers were
fourth out of four teams. CMS tallied
90 points. Williamsville, which had
four runners finish in the top-four, took
first with 18 points, followed by Roxana
(53) and Carrollton (76).
The top finisher for the CMS girls
was Molly Lewis (ninth, 15:20.14).

Bikers take part in hill climb
In late August, a group of dirt
bikers participated in a hill climb
hosted by the Cahokia Creek Dirt
Riders.
Orange lines on the steep hill
marked out how far up the hill riders were able to get. The first individual to scale the incline went a
little too fast and ended up falling
off his dirt bike. He was later evaluated by EMS personnel at the bottom of the hill. Several of the riders
managed to get to the top, though it
wasn’t by going as fast as possible
but rather taking a more slow and
steady approach. The quickest a
competitor made it up the hill was a
little less than four seconds, though
others took closer to 10 seconds to
get to the top of the dirt hill.
It was a little more than 120 feet
to the top.
The Hill Climb took place Aug.
23, starting shortly after 5:30 p.m.,
on property south of Route 138
near White City, an estimated one
mile west of I-55.
Events are scheduled for later
this fall on Sunday, Oct. 19, and
Sunday, Nov. 23.
 The first rider of the competition attempts to climb the hill. He
was unsuccessful.
