Ted Alley Presents Keys of Former
Coming July 13th Delta Funeral Home to City of Ladonia
Ladonia Frontier Days
By: Lavonne Duncan
The Ladonia Frontiers Day
are being planned and hope that
we have a big day and the
weather is great. The Rodeo
will start on Friday night July
12 and Saturday night July 13th.
We will have all day on the
Square on Saturday July 13th
starting at 9:00am. Games and
vendors wanted. Hope we can
talk the shoot out gang into putting on a shoot out for us. The
Fire Dept will be cooking
breakfast on Saturday morning
and be sure to come and eat a
good breakfast with them.
This will be our 48th year for
the Frontiers Day. If I am doing
the math right that means the
first Frontiers Day was in July
of 1965, I did not live here then
but do remember the year after
we moved here in 1969 the
Square was full and with the
many skits that the women and
men put on were great. A lot of
the local women dressed in long
dresses and really put on a
show, Really enjoyed watching
them. If you have any ideas or
would like to help with this
please feel free call me.
It was a historic transaction
last week when ownership of
two buildings belonging to
Delta Funeral Home on the west
side of Ladonia’s town square
were transferred to the City of
Ladonia. The property donation
was made by CMG Funeral
Partners of Nacogdoches, who
recently acquired Delta Funeral
Home and moved Ladonia operations to its Cooper location.
Former owner of the business Ted Alley, was present to
present the keys for the Ladonia
property to Ladonia Mayor Jan
By: Doug Franklin and Debby Frey
Cooper. Mr. Alley took the
opportunity to thank Ladonia
area families that had supported
Delta Funeral Home for so
many years. Ted and wife Lynn
Alley had operated Delta
Funeral Home since the death of
Lynn's father, Fred Newman, a
number of years ago. According
to Ted, the Newman's bought
Bradshaw Funeral Home from
Arthur Bradshaw in 1939 and
operated it as Delta Funeral
Home until earlier this year.
Mayor Cooper thanked the
owners of CMG Funeral
Partners for their generosity to
the city, and thanked Ted and
Lynn Alley for their long tenure
of service to people of the
Ladonia area. Mayor Cooper
said the town would put the
property to good use, with
intentions of using the property
to bring people to Ladonia and
to the downtown area.
Ladonia
Chamber
of
Commerce President Debbie
Frey, present for the property
transfer, said she is excited at
having a public facility available on the townsquare where
people can come and also visit
local downtown shops.
City Councilman Issac
Scoggins, who chairs Ladonia's
Parks
and
Recreation
Committee, said the group is
trying to bring together a broad
use of the buildings, one that
will also provide adequate funding to upgrade and remodel the
structures. "We are studying
ways to bring together
Ladonia's history, heritage, and
natural resources using this gift
to Ladonia," Scoggins said.
“Enhancing Grasslands Through Grazing
Management” and Tour Caddo Grasslands - Ladonia
On Friday, June 21st, the Fannin Soil and Water Conservation
District is partnering with the Texas Section Society for Range
Management to host a Summer Grazing Tour at the Caddo National
Grassland near Ladonia, TX. The focus of this meeting is
“Enhancing Grasslands through Grazing Management.”
In 1937 the Caddo Grasslands was acquired by the federal government to rehabilitate this damaged landscape. In 1960 this land
was transferred to the U.S. Forest Service and restoration efforts
have been made without livestock. Today the U.S. Forest Service is
seeking alternatives to naturally stimulate this grassland health by
planned grazing and prescribed fire.
By: Mary Jane Godwin
The event will begin at 9:00 am at the Fannindel ISD Cafeteria.
Austin Sewell, Rangeland Specialist for the Forest Service will
explain livestock integration and outline the goals of the Fannin
Grazing Coalition. Then, Dr. Mort Kothmann for Texas A&M
University will explain forage and livestock recordkeeping for sustainable use.
A tour will take place at 10:00 am, and the stops will include a
look at the native plants that are adapted to Fannin County, forage
and brush responses after prescribed fire, and a discussion on proper grass utilization. Participants on the tour will include representatives from The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, NRCS, and
Texas Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative.
Lunch will be provided at noon by the Fannin SWCD, and then
participants are welcome to stay for a 30 minute afternoon session
on tracking grazing data year to year with “The Grazing Manager”
(TGM). TGM is a decision support software system available as a
free download for grazers interested in a simple way to track grass
production and livestock utilization.
For further questions, contact the USDA-Natural Resources
Conservation Service Office in Bonham at 903-583-9513 x3 or
come by at 2504 North Center Street, Bonham, TX.
Please RSVP to 903-583-9513 x3 if you plan to eat lunch.*****

Military Leader Returns To Fannindel
Alma Mater
By: Doug Franklin
Noted educator, military
leader, and author, Colonel
James Wilhite, returned to his
alma mater Fannindel High
School last Tuesday night to
deliver
this
year’s
Commencement Address to fifteen graduating members of the
Senior Class.
A crowd of more than four
hundred gathered into the H L
Milton Sports Complex to
honor the graduates and hear
COL Wilhite.
A native of Pecan Gap, the
speaker has served in various
roles in the United States Army
Reserve for more than thirtynine years and also is Professor
Emeritus from Northeastern
State University in Tahlequah,
Oklahoma, having spent twenty-six years in higher education.
COL Wilhite is currently on a
speaking tour and conducting
book signings for his book, We
Answered the Call. His book
from Tate Publishing is the true
story by Colonel Wilhite of success and hope from Operation
Enduring
Freedom
in
Afghanistan.
His address to the graduates
centered around citizenship and
how to use the leadership skills
they
gained
in
school.
Unexpectedly called up from
his life as a professor of
Education, Wilhite’s life was
suddenly turned upside down by
a call to take the skills and training he had acquired as an educator and a drill sergeant to
Afghanistan. After all, Jim
spoke the persuasive dialect of
Texas and Oklahoma, and as a
rural youngster in Northeast
Texas he had learned to be
resourceful. These life-learned
qualities were essential for his
assignment.as he was deployed
to a war zone in the capital city
of Kabul.
Called back to active duty in
the Army, Dr. Wilhite became
Colonel Wilhite and embarked
on a mission that seemed
impossible. He was tasked to
build a National Military
Academy for Afghanistan, a
university equivalent undertaking, with no allotted budget and
with no full-time staff. West
Point, where he had served on
the faculty, was to be his model.
Once there, he and a dedicated
team of Afghan, American, and
Allied colleagues use their
diversity, savvy, and drive to
overcome all obstacles and
build a symbol of hope – the
National Military Academy of
Afghanistan.
This 1965 graduate of
Fannindel is now considered by
the Afghans to be the “Father of
the National Military Academy
of Afghanistan” and is generally
acknowledged to be an exceptional goodwill ambassador of
our country.
Colorful and charismatic,
Jim Wilhite is not one who
places great importance on
being addressed as ‘Colonel
Wilhite’. Jimmy is a plainspeaking Texan/Oklahoman and
it was clear from his stories that
struggles and discipline from
his days at Fannindel were key
to his getting results with scant
resources in Alfghanistan.
The Valedictorian Address was
delivered by Theren Joe Erwin,
Jr., and the Salutatorian Address
was given by John Joseph
Fornof. Third high graduate,
Sarah Elizabeth Parr, gave the
invocation, and benediction was
given by class member Stevie
Brown-Earles.
Fannindel High School
Principal Robert Wayne Milton
presented scholarships to the
graduating seniors. He said it
was the first time in the school's
history that all graduating seniors had received scholarships.

Diplomas were presented by
Fannindel ISD board members
Gwen Beeler, Marva Scott,
Mandy Duplechan, Charlene
Crosby, Scott Franklin, Joe
Erwin, and Wanda White.
A Baccalaureate Service on
Sunday
evening
before
Tuesday's commencement featured the Reverend Cecil Jones,
who delivered the message to
graduating seniors, family, and
friends gathered at H. L. Milton
Sports Complex. The event was
followed by a reception for the

-------------------------------------Got Rats? We have Cats?
Are rodents eating your feed,
tack, and/or electrical wires?
You don’t need poisons…you
need cats! Barn Cats has sterilized feral and semi-feral cats
that have had a negative test for
feline leukemia plus rabies and
distemper shots that need a barn
to live in…they are “working”
cats. They need a job! All you
need is somewhere we can place
a cage for a 2-week relocation
period. We bring out the cats,
the cages, and everything to
make them comfortable including food and litter. All you have
to do is maintain that cage. At
the end of 2 weeks, you release
the cats and they “take care of
business” in your barn, shed, or
warehouse. They will require a
place to hide out and a
feeder/waterer for the long term
but that is all for the most part.
Feral cats are non-domesticated
cats – not pets. They do not
want in your house, to follow
you around, or to be petted. We
currently have 40+ cats waiting
for placement. We cover the 37
counties that are a 2-hour drive
each direction from Dallas/Fort
Worth. All you have to do is
contact Barn Cats for a short
discussion about your property
and the care of the cats then we
make an appointment to deliver
them. There is NO FEE – but
we ask for a donation and all
donations are tax-deductible.
Barn Cats, Inc. is an all-volunteer, tax-exempt non-profit
organization. Additional information
is
available
at
www.barncats.org. So, call
972-315-2875 or send an email
to info@barncats.org. We can
have cats “working for you” by
next weekend!

The Ladonia Chamber of
Commerce will be showing a
movie, “Ice Age” on the square
Friday evening June 14th beginning at 8:30 p. m. It is free and
everyone is invited but advised
to bring bug spray to repel the
mosquitoes.
The following Saturday June
15th, the annual 20 miles of
garage sales will be held. Pecan
Gap, Bugtussle, Dial, Ben
Franklin and Ladonia will all
participate.
The annual Rattler Reunion
will be held at Fannindel on
Saturday June 15th also. Each
year, a few who have always
attended are unable to be there
to see old friends. Edward
Isaacs of Sherman was in
Ladonia Saturday and visited
the Isaacs and Freys in downtown Ladonia and also visited
1941 classmate Lena Shaw. He
called another classmate in
Houston, Newt Bartley, and he
is not sure he will be able to
make it to the reunion this year.
Congratulations to 2013
Honey Grove High School
graduate Alyssa Robnett who
was a member of the Beta Club
and received the Distinguished
Achievement Award. She has 31
college credits and will attend
the University of Texas at
Arlington to work for a degree
in nursing. She is the granddaughter of Debby and Jim
Crofford of Ladonia.
As of Saturday, Jerry Don
Smith showed some improvement, but is still critically ill.
Several in the area are checking
on him through phone messages
from his sister, Kaye Smith
Hall. Please continue in prayer
for him. He is allowed no visitors except family members.
Mr. Milton is now home from
the hospital and has a pacemaker.
Neva Taylor is also critically
ill from a malignancy and is in a
Tyler Hospital. Please be in
prayer for her and her mother
Jean Stewart who is not in the
best of health either.
Even though school is out the
town is quiet, as the children are
winding down and preparing for
summer ball games and the
upcoming Bookworm Club
organized
by
Danielle
Childress.
Do you enjoy working with
children? Hayden Thomas is
doing a wonderful job as youth
minister to the sixth through
twelfth grades at First Baptist,
but no one has come forward to
teach the younger children.
Shh! Shh! Their parents may
disown me, but are older folks
not allowed to speak their
minds? I am going to tattle on
my great granddaughters. The
teenager, Madison, will be
entering High School in
Commerce next semester. This
year, in addition to participating
in track, volley ball and basket
ball she came away with several
awards. 1, Top Scholar in
Science and English. 2. A honor
roll for the year. 3. Perfect attendance for the year. 4. The “C”
award, when the average in all
studies is never below 95 for the
year. Algebra I, Art, Health, Pre
AP English, Science, Social
Studies and Spanish. 5. Top
reader award. She won first
place in the UIL district oral
reading event. 6. Principal’s
Award (one boy and one girl
chosen from the class). Her
little sister, Savannah, finished
fifth grade and turned 11 on
June 11th. Her awards were 1. A
honor roll for the year. 2.
Principal’s Award for all A’s
through 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.
3. Gold Medal for her
Accelerated Reading. 4. Medal
for winning district in UIL oral
reading. 5. Language arts
Award. 6. Academic excellence.
She is also an All Star on her
softball team, where she pitches
and plays shortstop, was a member of the student council and
for the last six weeks of school
was part of the 5th grade news
team. I love them as only a
great grandparent can, and am
very proud of them. I ask that
you join me in prayer for them,
that they pursue their quest for
knowledge throughout their
lives, attaining wisdom as they
go.
Congratulations to Karen
Jones Pickard of Pecan Gap
who was recently named Delta
County volunteer of the year.
She is a member of the Big
Sisters, and mentors young
ladies who need her support.
She works in her community
and her Church, teaching in

wherever she is needed.

Carol Shaw is back home in
Garland after several weeks in
Indiana with her parents. Her
father became very ill and
passed away on June 1st, with
all members of his family
around him. Bruce and Joyce
Moore spent years in Ecuador
as missionaries to the Colorado
tribe there and did mission work
in Guatemala also. Bruce’s cremains will be scattered in
Ecuador at a later date. A
memorial service was held for
him in Indiana.
Happy Father’s Day to all
you dads out there. May you be
the inspiration to your children
which will inspire them always
to work for the common good of
all mankind. May God continue
to bless all of you and your families.
Job Opening: Pay
Commensurate with Duties
By: Reuben Trussell, Pecan Gap
Tuesday morning, as Ed was
leaving East Side, he told Gary
Don to come on down to their
work site, presumably for a job.
“What would he need to do”,
asks Gary Don? Ed indicated
that he would do nothing. Well
… there was a certain preacher
there who heard the offer the
way he wanted to hear it. The
preacher asked, “Where can I
sign up to come there and do
nothing … and how much does
it pay?
Ed responded.
“Nothing! You will be paid
nothing to sit and do nothing.”
The response given by Ed
brings to mind a scripture in the
Bible.
Paul instructs the
Christians of two thousand
years ago, “In the name of the
Lord Jesus Christ, we command
you, brothers and sisters, to
keep away from every believer
who is idle and disruptive and
does not live according to the
teaching you received from us.
For you yourselves know how
you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we
were with you, nor did we eat
anyone’s food without earning
it. We worked night and day
when we were with you. We did
this, not because we do not have
the right to such help, but in
order to offer ourselves as a model for
you to imitate. For
even when we were
with you, we gave
you this rule: “The
one who is unwilling
to work shall not eat.”
We hear that
some among you are
idle and disruptive.
They are not busy;
they are busybodies.
Such people we command and
urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to
settle down and earn the food
they eat. And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of
doing what is good.” (II
Thessalonians 3:6-13)
That brings to mind a story
… Jay was telling Mike that he
had just lost his job. “Why did
the foreman fire you?” Mike
asked in surprise. “Oh,” Jay
said, “you know how foreman
are. They stand around with
their hands in their pockets
watching everybody else work.”
“We all know that,” replied
Mike. “But why did he let you
go?” “Jealousy,” answered Jay.
“All the other workers thought I
was the foreman.”
Idleness, even in the work of
the Lord, comes to no good end.
As the preacher told the congregation this past Lord’s Day,
“Our first duty in to tell others
about Jesus and the salvation He
brings to us.”
We are to be busy as a witness for Christ. In The Great
Commission, found for times in
the Gospels and once in the
Book of Acts, Jesus tells the
Disciples, and us, to “GO”! Go
into the world, beginning at
home, and tell others The Good
News. By our words and
actions we can tell them that
God loves them and has a wonderful plan for their lives. By
our certain actions and failure to
tell them the Good News we
witness also. We tell them we
do not care where they spend
eternity.
To any who do not know
Jesus as Savior, who are reading
these words … “Look to Jesus
and be saved!” To those who
are saved … be busy telling
family, friends and neighbors
that Jesus is THE ONLY
ANSWER to the spiritual needs
of their lives. Heaven is a wonderful place and Heaven is a
REAL place. Jesus is the only
way for us to get to Heaven.
“Do not let your hearts be
troubled. You believe in God;
believe also in me. My Father’s
house has many rooms; if that
were not so, I would have told
you. I am going there to prepare
a place for you? And if I go and
prepare a place for you, I will
come back and take you to be
with me that you also may be
where I am. Jesus said, “I am
the way and the truth and the
life. No one comes to the Father
except through me.” (John 14:16)
“What we do for ourselves
dies with us. What we do for
others and the world remains
and is immortal.” (Albert Pine,
English author, d.1851)
A final apocryphal story. It's
a hot summer day and Dewey
and Larry are in a ditch digging
away. Meanwhile, Gary Don is
up under the shade of a tree sipping on a cool drink. Dewey
asks Larry, "Why are we down
here digging in the hot Sun
while Gary Don is being cool up
there?" Larry says, "I don't
know, I'll go ask him". Larry
goes up and asks Gary Don,
"Why are you up here in the
shade drinking a cool drink and
Dewey and I are in the ditch
digging in the hot sun?" Gary
Don says, "'cause I've got
smarts". "What's that? Asks
Larry. Gary Don puts his hand
in front of the tree and says,
“Hit my hand as hard as you
can". Larry swings his fist at
Gary Don’s hand. Gary Don
moves his hand and Larry hits
the tree, hurting his hand. Gary
Don, says "I knew to pull my
hand away, that’s called having
smarts". Larry goes back in the
ditch and Dewey asks, "What
did he say?" Larry says, "Its
cause he has smarts." "What's
that? Asks Dewey. Larry puts
his hand in front of his face and
says. "Hit my hand as hard as
you can!"
Now,
that’s
called
Workman’s Comp!
By the way, what if our elected officials in Austin and
Washington were paid according to the work they accomplish?

Letter To The Editor:
The recent ‘On Record’,
comments from a Ladonia City
Council Member remind of
what happens in a small town
when it is left undefended by
the First Amendment, the freedom of the Press. Freedom of
Speech. A desenting opinion
against Government.
One,
that can not be equaled by misuse of official elected or
appointed powers.
It speaks well of our
Community (Ladonia) to publish the transition and the growing pains, the smell of dirty
laundry is much needed.
“The evolution, from those
in Power, to the people being
returned the Power".
As a new member of this

Thank the Journalists, from the

walk in and look you in the eye,
and ask for your comments.
Many have none, and others
only whisper. Now, is a great
time for Ladonia... a moment to

are retaliated against, you have

will only speak up!!!

BE AWARE:
By: Lorrie Page
The sunflower fields just east
of Honey Grove, or otherwise,
are beautiful this time of year
and people are continuously
stopping along the highways to
take photographs of their
famiies, children and grandchildren in the picturesque setting.
It’s been asked to ALERT the
public about the sunflowers.
The flowers are sprayed with an
industrial chemical that can be
absorbed through the skin as a
poison... so BE AWARE!
Signs are placed at strategic
areas of the fields warning
photograhpers, but are not
seemingly followed.
PLEASE,
PLEASE,
PLEASE DO NOT LET
CHILDREN RUN THROUGH
THE FIELDS... keep everyone
at the edge of the fields for
photographs.

Sherman- Evelyn Ruth
(Cain) Ivey, age 91, went peacefully to be with the Lord
Sunday, June 9, 2013 at the
Homestead of Sherman.
Evelyn Ruth Cain was born
July 8, 1921, the daughter of
Willard Elmer (W.E.) Cain and
Mamye Grace (Witherspoon)
Cain in Mulberry, Texas. Evelyn
graduated from Bonham High
School in 1939 and helped her
parents for the next several
years with the raising of her two
brothers. She has always been a
selfless person and felt in her
heart that she needed to remain
at home to support her husband
through his career in law
enforcement. Evelyn married
the love of her life, William
Hoyt Ivey Sr., on January 23,
1949 in Bonham, Texas. Mrs.
Ivey worked in Bonham at the
M and S clinic as a receptionist,
in Honey Grove at the Duke and
Ayers five and dime variety
store which later changed to
Perry Brothers. She retired in
1984 so she could help take care
of her first grandchild. Evelyn
was constantly putting other’s
needs before her own and
served as her husband’s main
caretaker until his passing 12
years ago. She was a member of
the McKenzie United Methodist
Church of Honey Grove, the
United Methodist Women and
the Philathea Sunday School
Class. Throughout her life,
Evelyn displayed the utmost
example of having a forgiving
and non-judgmental spirit. The
world was a better place with
the presence of Evelyn (Cain)
Ivey, and she will be deeply
missed by all those who knew
and loved her.
Mrs. Ivey is survived by her
loving family, son, Hoyt Ivey Jr.
and wife Johnna of Sherman,
TX, three grandchildren, one
great-granddaughter, and a host
of nieces, nephews, in-laws,
cousins and friends. She was
preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two brothers,
Dwight and Doyle Cain.
A celebration of life service
will be held at the McKenzie
United Methodist Church in
Honey Grove, TX, at 3:00 p.m.

McKenzie United Methodist Sets Re-Dedication To
Celebrate Restoration Of 1918 Pipe Organ
By: Claude Caffee
On Sunday, June 23, 2013,
3:00 p.m., almost exactly one
year since the last concert was
held and the restoration work
began on McKenzie United
Methhodist Church’s historic
pipe organ, the restored
Hillgreeen-Lane Pipe Organ
will be featured in another concert; the program will demonstrate the rich sounds now resonating from the organ’s chamber, providing high and low
notes not heard for a number of
years. Chimes have also been
restored to the organ, the original having been damaged and
removed.
In addition to the
work on the mechanic components and the console, the
façade pipes have been restored,
giving the pipes a clean, classical appearance.
The organ was installed in
November, 1918, Reverend Rex
Wilkes serving the congregation; Mrs. Eugene Erwin was
church organist and D. W.
Rowton was Sunday School
Superintendent. A dedicatory
recital was provided by Mrs.
Cassidy of Dallas. A long line
of organists have served
McKenzie in this role: Mr. Allan
Dale Owens, Lorraine Lane,
Elizabeth Thompson, Lucille
Fladger, Willie Reed Gandy,
Dorris Jolly. All of these followed Mrs. Erwin as organists.
Mrs. Waltermeir followed
Annie Brewer.
Caroline
Whitlock is currently the church
organist.
While all of the specific individual roles have yet to be confirmed, Dan Vaughan, who has
spent the last year on the
restoration project, and who is
choir director and organists for
First Presbyterian Church,
Rockwall, Tx, will lead and
present a program on the organ,
play duets with Emily Ashcraft
and Chris Caffee on the piano.
The program will also feature
Monte Ashcraft, McKenzie
UMC’s director of music, on the
trumpet and Chris Caffee on the
organ. Chris will also play the
organ for two hymns. The program will last for approximately
one hour, followed by a reception in the Annex of the church.
Rededication of the restored
organ will be conducted at the
11:00 a.m. church service.
