There was a tie for 1st place with the top two teams splitting the jackpot money and then flipping for the trophy belt buckle set that was provided by Cavender’s Boot City out of Greenville, Texas. The Ladonia Rodeo Association would like to thank their sponsors Ben E Keith, Cavender’s and K95.5 as well as thank all the volunteers that came out and worked to make this event a success. By: Lucy Nashed: lucy.nashed@gov.texas.gov Gov. Perry Announces Toyota Moving North American Headquarters to Plano, Generating 4,000 Jobs Gov. Rick Perry today announced Toyota Motor North America is relocating its headquarters to Plano. The more than $300 million capital investment is expected to employ nearly 4,000 people upon completion, and compliments the company’s existing Texas operations. In exchange for Toyota’s commitment to create these new jobs and capital investment in Texas, the state has offered Toyota an investment of $40 million through the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF). “Over the past decade, Texas and Toyota have developed a strong partnership that has resulted in good-paying jobs for thousands of Texans,” Gov. Perry said. “Toyota understands that Texas’ employer-friendly combination of low taxes, fair courts, smart regulations and world-class workforce can help businesses of any size succeed and thrive. We’re proud that both the Tundra and Tacoma bear the words ‘Made in Texas,’ and we’re excited our state will be the nexus for Toyota’s North American operations moving forward.” Toyota’s Texas operations include its $2.3 billion manufacturing facility in San Antonio which supports 2,900 jobs. Combined with its 21 on-site suppliers, Toyota supports 6,000 jobs in San Antonio. The company cited a number of factors in choosing a location for its new headquarters, including the TEF investment, Texas’ low taxes, smart regulations, fair courts and skilled workforce as factors in its decision. The project is supported by an investment from the TEF, which offers companies incentives to create jobs and invest in Texas. When completed, it will be one of the largest job creation projects in TEF history. The agreement is contingent upon the finalization of contracts and a local incentive agreement. The Legislature created the TEF in 2003 and reauthorized the fund in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013 to help ensure the growth of Texas businesses and create more jobs throughout the state. TEF projects must be approved by the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the House. The fund has since become one of the state's most competitive tools to recruit and bolster business. To date, the TEF has invested more than $558 million and closed the deal on projects generating nearly 74,500 new jobs and more than $24 billion in capital investment in the state. For more information about the TEF, please visit http://www.texaswideopenforbusiness.com/incentives-financing/tef.php or http://www.governor.state.tx.us. Bring a dish for the dinner after our cleanup. Let God keep us remembering those before us. Jody McIntier takes us out to meet them and usually their other pet. We get excited when one of our friends gets out and we don’t. Guess we’re all a little jealous. All day we sit and wait for that person that comes and picks us. We get excited when our friends get to leave with their new family, but as the day goes by we start to worry that we won’t get picked. Where is our person? The volunteers are always wonderful at the end of the day and it’s time to go back to the shelter. They tell each of us that we are loved and our family will come. They will never give up on us. We hear every week that there is a home for every animal; we just have to keep looking. Just want to let you know…we are all waiting for you. We are safe and loved, but we want our own home. We want our own family. We want YOU. Come visit us at an adoption event or come visit us at the shelter. Shelter hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday 1-5 or by appointment. We are at Petco in Allen, Plano or Firewheel though out the month and Tractor Supply in Greenville on the 2nd Saturday of the month. Visit our face book to see where you can find us (Barchard Shelter), email commercepets@yahoo.com or call 903/496-2412. We are waiting for YOU. Remember to spay or neuter to reduce the number of unwanted pets in our local shelters. If you can’t adopt have you thought of sponsoring a shelter animal? For $30 a month you can sponsor a pet. Call 903/640-3473 to get details. Shelter 661 CR 4818, Wolfe City, TX 75496. Waiting For You President Friday is always an exciting day for the dogs and cats at the Barchard Shelter. It’s the day that the people walk through the shelter and pull those of us that get to go to adoption events on Saturday and Sunday. We all wait anxiously to be chosen. We run around showing our best side trying to catch the attention of the person pulling us out to get ready for adoption. It’s always sad when the person says not this week you’re not on rotation, but maybe someone will come to the shelter this weekend for you. If it’s our week to go to adoption we get the spa treatment. Starting with the dreaded bath, ear cleaning, and nail trim. Once that’s over its all just excitement that we are going to meet you our new best friend! Saturday morning everyone is on their best behavior as the volunteers load us up to go off to the different locations for adoption. It’s all so exciting – a day trip to meet our person! Once we arrive at the adoption location it’s a mad rush to run out and go potty and then into the facility to await YOU. We all get wonderful treats all day long. People come by and love on us and give us more treats. PAGE 3, MAY 15, 2014 WEEKLY GAZETTE & WOLFE CITY MIRROR Ramblings By: Lena Shaw Last week was teacher appreciation week, nurses appreciation week and firefighters appreciation week. May 8th was V-E day, noting the end of the war in Europe. We should stop each day and first thank God and then pray for all the people who contribute to our well being each day. Here in America we all depend on each other. May 11th we celebrated Mother’s Day and it is said that she who rocks the cradle rules the world. A dedicated mother does that, but not without help, it takes a village. A week or so ago our fire department (volunteer) participated in a “fireman’s rodeo’ and came in second place against some bigger departments. In this small town we have had hundreds of great teachers and still do. Nurses go above and beyond in serving others, and each one makes a difference in our lives. While we are giving thanks there are the farmers who grow our food, our pastors and Churches who enlarge our spiritual lives and most everyone we come in contact with who brings something into our lives. Thanks to everyone. Please be in prayer for Juanita Smith Rogers. Dee Ivy watches out for her and reports that her health is deteriorating rapidly. Birthday greetings on May 17th to Curtis Ford and Jurase Brown; on May 18th to Rosemary Haden Marcum, Bryan Runnels and Mackenzie Langston; on May 19th to Daryl Duncan; on May 20th to Brittany Reel, Tootie Fields and Jane Betters Zavala; on May 21st to Jennifer Nixon and Patricia Lee; and on May 22nd to Chris Crumb, Bonny Jean Smith and Scotty Sandlin. Regarding birthdays, June Roderick will celebrate her twice 40 birthday May 24th at the Community Center in Pecan Gap. She said that everyone is welcome to attend. Happy Wedding Anniversary on May 21st to Noel and Leigh Ann Scarborough Jones. Shannon Bankston, Paula Thomas and Alicia Green and their families met with their mother Fayra Bankston in Sulphur Springs at the Redneck Roadhouse for a meal and a visit to celebrate Fayra’s birthday and Mother’s Day. Flags will be placed at the Cemetery soon for Memorial Day, to honor all veterans of all wars. Debby Crofford and her sister Cheryl Seilhan usually do this but they would probably appreciate any help they can get. Ted Maines handed out brochures for the Christian Wholesale Store, and although the books are good reading for everyone it was done to furnish reading material for children who are home schooled. The web address is www.Christian Wholesale Store.com. Both a group from First Baptist Ladonia and the Chamber of Commerce of Ladonia met at Gloria’s Kitchen Saturday morning. FBC folks met at 8:00 a. m. for breakfast and the Chamber of Commerce held the monthly meeting at 9:00 a. m. with twelve present. Following the welcome by President Debby Frey the meeting was opened with prayer by Todd Akers. Anita Akers read the minutes of the last meeting and gave the treasurer’s report. It was reported that 1000 dollars was made on the silent auction. Mayor Jan Cooper reported that the City Council meeting will be held May 20th and asked everyone to vote as each vote counts. The city election was held at the meeting room in City Hall from 7:00 a. m. to 7:00 p.m. The annual 20 mile garage sale will be held June 14th and flyers will be ready soon to pass out to folks so that they have time to gather their garage sale items. That same day the Annual Wolfe City Country Cruise will be held and 200 to 250 bikers are expected to ride Chaparral Rails to Trails and will be coming through Ladonia. The Chamber will pass out bottles of cold water to the riders. On June 19th the LACE building (former Delta Funeral Home) will be open. The entertainment that had committed to be perform is unable to be present on that date, so the Grand Opening will be moved to a later date. Gail Levey is still at work on plans for the Boyd Festival for September and has four bands scheduled to play, two of which are Tommy Will Jones and Crossroads. It is hoped that the Light Crust Doughboys will be playing also. September 10th from 10:00 a. m. to 8:00 p. m. is the date for the Festival. There will also be sellers and some booths with food for sale. On May 3rd 20 bike riders on Rails To Trails came through Ladonia and stopped for cold water at the stand set up by Debby Frey and Anita Akers. Bob Bledsoe was the chairman of the Chapparal Rails to Trails and kept it mowed. He is recently deceased so volunteers will be needed to keep the site mowed. Martha and Ricky Crews of Pecan Gap have had health problems but are feeling better. Ricky is back at work but is driving Martha to work in Commerce as she is still having trouble with her vision. Martha was honored on Mother’s Day when her dad, Granville Fields and children, Kerry and Tracy Crews, Brandon, Cameron and Allyson and Steven Crews met at Pecan Gap for a visit and a meal. With the exception of Steven, who was unable to come at that time, the same group spent the day at the home of Ricky and Martha on Easter. Robert, Kay and Chantz Graff of Argyle were in Ladonia to place flowers at the grave of Kay’s mother, Reba Caskey for Mother’s Day and her birthday. They stopped by for a visit with long time friend Wanetha Jones. On Mother’s Day all of Wanetha Jones’ children, sons John and Rickey and daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Ed Pickard attended worship services with her at First Baptist before having lunch and a good family visit. Keith Hester also attended worship services with his mother Becky Hester. Daughter Tina didn’t reach Ladonia from Irving in time to attend Church, but had a good lunch ready and we had a good visit. One of her gifts was the book “Heaven is for Real” which I had wanted to read. Carol Shaw, who is at the bedside of her mother Joyce Moore, who is critically ill in Indiana, called and sent an e-card, and grandson Travis called from Kingston Springs, Tennessee. The beautiful Mother’s Day message at First Baptist was brought by Youth Leader Hayden Thomas and each mother was given a beautiful red rose. The Hulsey family is very close knit and as grandson Scott Hulsey had to work, and all the family wanted to be together, Tom and Oma Hulsey of Ladonia, Greg, Alicia and Tyler Hulsey of Commerce and Charlie, Lesa, Tommy, Haley and Ashtyn Lawhon of Honey Grove met in Sherman where he works, for a Mother’s Day meal and visit during his lunch hour. Mrs. Burleson is doing well and is enjoying the beautiful sights of spring in Mississippi. Up to now the dogwoods and azaleas have been affording pleasure to all who viewed them and now the magnolias are blooming. Gift Certificates available. Now taking Massage appointments at the Massage & Fitness Center in Honey Grove Weekend and evening appointments available. Testimonial Letter By: James Mincey Letter Addressed To: David Conejo, CEO Red River Regional Hospital I find myself again in the very capable and dedicated care of your squared away hospital. I began Physical Therapy this week with Angie Story; I like to refer to her as my Drill Instructor! I plan to begin Respiratory Therapy next week. I might regress here just a bit to clarify my purpose to seek and receive therapy at Red River Regional. March 20th I had lung surgery at U.T. Health Science Center at Tyler. The surgeon suggested that I should undergo six weeks of respiratory therapy before my surgery. He said the surgery and recov- ery would be less stressful for me. Well, I’m glad he passed on that bit of wisdom. The Respiratory Therapy Program and procedures developed my lungs, diaphragm and chest muscles to a much better condition to aid my recovery. For a bonus, Rob Yost convinced me to give up cigarettes. I smoked for 51 years. Now I’m a Tootsie Roll Fiend on a full-time sugar rush! Speaking of sweet things, you have a dedicated nurse here that is a darn good kisser. I will tell you her name is Melanie Mincey (my wife) because I think her husband would agree. James S. Incumbents Ed Pickard, Sharline Freeman, and Dewey Marsh were elected and we appreciate their volunteered time in helping to conduct business for our small city. The City Council now consist of Warner Cheney, Mayor, John Moss, Jerry Park, Ed Pickard, Sharline Freeman, and Dewey Marsh. Nelda Campbell is City Secretary. Jack Kiley who lost his race for the city council is to be commended for his interest and support for the city. As most of you know, Jack is Fire Chief for the Pecan Gap Volunteer Fire Department and they have done a wonderful job and have been there for folks in the city as well as the surrounding communities. Jack has served as Fire Marshall for Delta County as well as other civic positions and we appreci- ate his interest and input in all of these positions. Thanks registered voters for the large turn out that took place at Saturday's election. Amazing! Fifty nine (59) folks voted out of 80 registered to vote within the Pecan Gap city limits in Delta County and 7 registered voters living within Pecan Gap city limits in Fannin County. This shows that you are interested in our small fair city and like how the city has been run in the past. We appreciate you getting out and voting. Our sympathy goes to the family of Betty Hensley formerly Commerce and lived in the Pecan Gap area at one time. Services were to be held at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home in Greenville on Tuesday May 13 and burial at Pecan Gap Cemetery. Betty's children David, Eric, Edwin, and Tim attended school in this area when they were young and Betty attended First Baptist Church Pecan Gap when she lived in this area. Our sympathy goes to the family of Wanda Goates who lived in the Pecan Gap area many years ago. Services for Wanda were to be in Commerce Funeral Home May 12th. Wanda's children attended school in this area when they were young. Be in prayer for this family. Betty Davis is at home but very ill. Continue to keep Betty and Ancil in your prayers. Helen Park is to have hip replacement surgery Monday, May 12th, and we ask that you keep Helen in your prayers. Helen has been in much pain and has needed this hip surgery for many months. We wish her a speedy recovery. Jennifer, Helen and Jerry's daughter, was here for the weekend and was to be here for Helen's surgery. Lois Amundson and Bob Cadenhead have gone to Iowa for the summer and will be missed greatly. Lois has family in Iowa and she will be there close to her son and grand children. Her and Bob raise a wonderful garden while there and bring back wonderful cream style corn when they return to Texas. Titus Gable was with his grandparents Ed and Karen Pickard over the weekend. Titus had a great big smile and gave me (Nelda) a great big hug which thrilled me much. As usual, Rita Erwin joined her mom, June Roderick, in church services Sunday at First Baptist Pecan Gap. Ricky Beeler also joined his mom Gwen Beeler. Ricky did a beautiful tribute to his mom as well as those that have lost their moms recently. It is always a thrill to see Rita and Ricky and we appreciate their thoughtfulness. Per Request... Down Home By: John Herbert Sherwood The Postman and His Dogs To most folks, I imagine, their idea off a walking Postman job is that of a person who walks along carrying a bag, and putting letters and packages in their patrons mailboxes. Let me share with you that that is far from the confines of the job. I did many other things in my 25 years on the job, let me mention a few: I started Mrs. Mcfarland's car on cold mornings, she had a tendency to flood it, you see, I helped Argus Turner out of the ditch in front of his house when he was mowing his yard. I found Mrs. Gasperson where she had fallen and broke her hip in her backyard, and notified the medics, I prayed for Mildred Dougherty when she was in need. In other words, I was a full service Postman. But the most interesting thing about my job, I guess you might say, was my interaction with dogs. There was this Beagle dog that belonged to Jack Holmes, that walked with me for two years. He was a gentleman, never impulsive, when he greeted me in the morning, he never reared upon me or barked, he greeted me with a wag of his tail. Then we marched together on the mail route. He walked by my hand, always at my side, and when we met Dobermans or German Shepherds or any other big dog, he moved between me and the dog as if in protection. He stood very alert, with his ears up, then we would move down the street with the beagle once more at my side. I was sad when I heard he was run over and killed. Then there was the aggressive dogs that considered me the enemy, I will mention a few. I was walking down Pacific street, just strolling along on a nice day, when something told me to look back, I did, just in time. There was this big red Boxer in mid air, diving at me, so I swung my mail bag and hit him in mid air, at which time Julious Gene Allen came out of the house at a trot, hollering at his dog, then snapping him on a chain. He inquired about my health, and I assured him I was alright, and from that day onward he kept him on a leash, and I walked with confidence down the street. I was walking on East Market Street past Ray Terrells house, and I had never seen a dog at that house, when suddenly there was a jolt on my right hip, and when I wheeled around, a Doberman had hold of my trouser leg, and he ripped them from my hip to my ankles. When I hollered at him, he trotted into the back yard. I reckon he considered point made. I walked to 14th Street, with pants dragging, where Mrs. Annie Lair saw me, brought out her package of safety pins, and pinned me up. Mrs. Terrell offered to buy me a new pair of trousers, which was very nice, but I told her I had plenty of pants, but it was my skin I was concerned about. We both laughed and forget it. Now that was also a miss. He missed me by the thickness of my trouser leg. I would also like to mention the dog, who didn't want to bite me, he just wanted to scare the life out of me. He was the property of John Wayne Shipman, who lived on West Market Street, and this was his dog's ritual. He would hide behind a big hedge, which was placed right by the mail box. So I would walk across the yard, all was quiet, guess the dog is not at home, I reached the mail box, reached up to put the letters in the box, when this monster jumped out at me, barking and growling and showing his teeth, but never bit me. I got even one day when he followed me into the yard, still putting on his act, but this time he got too close, and I planted my #14 brogan right under his stomach, lifting him some 4 feet into the air, when he came down he whined and limped back to the hedge bush. You know, I just felt so good all day. So that was another miss, but this one was not intentional, he never meant to bite. The kick I made however, was all intentional. Now here is a couple of the hits, the times when they got me. Elizabeth Franklin, who lived on South 1st Street, had a big white long haired dog. He lay on the walk daily, sleeping in the sun, right next to the mail box, you must step over him to put the mail in the box. Now I knew by experience that there was no malice in him. I would have her mail in my hand, I would step over the dog, he would open one eye, but never move, I would put the mail in the box, step back over him, he would open one eye, but never move, and I was on my way down the street. Now you must realize I had done this a thousand times, no problem. But one day, as I stepped over him he got me, and tore an ugly gash in the calf of my leg. Now that was a hit, as you know, he hit his mark. When I got home, and pulled off my trousers to take my shower, Golda saw the wound, and gave a little scream, "What happened, did you report it to the Post Master, stand still so I can see it." I thought she was going to faint. Well, everything turned out all right, next morning I reported it to the Post Master, Jack Shelton, who warned Elizabeth about the dog, and Jack watched him for 10 days as you are supposed to do to see if the dog is rabid, and it turned out that he was alright. My leg healed nicely. One more time, it is illegal to keep a dog in the Housing Unit. One day I got bit by a dog there. So the Post Master had the Police to search the Unit, for the dog, so they could contain him. After two days the Police found him, seems the ladies in the housing unit thought he was so pretty, and they befriended him and fed him. So the Police put him in a cage at City Hall, so they could keep watch over him. And John William Luttrell was Mayor. So after 10 days I went by City Hall to see if the dog was still O.K. I met John William at the door, and I asked him if the dog was still all right. He looked at me mournfully, shook his head, and said, "Herbert, I'm really sorry, but you know it's been nice knowing you all these years, sorry it had to end this way". Then he looked at my shocked face, slapped me on the back, and said, with a laugh, "Naw the dog's all right". And that's the way it was, Down Home.
