Dear Friends:
It’s been 14 years since we first began our journey to give all kids a chance
to play every day. As you may know, Playworks started as a simple idea in
response to one principal’s request. As we’ve grown and flourished, Playworks
has evolved to an organization that relies on the collective insights of many
partners, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, AmeriCorps,
The Gallup Organization, the National Association of Elementary School
Principals, Stanford University, the Stockton Unified School District and
every single school, district and individual who shares our vision.

This has been a seminal year for Playworks because of these partnerships. By
putting our heads together, we’ve been able to strengthen our programs and
build broad support for the important work we do.
Together, we’ve helped stop the chaos on the playground and improve learning
in the classroom. We’ve created opportunities for students to develop leadership
skills and for young adults to serve their communities. We’ve found new ways
to engage campus security assistants and improve the school climate. We’ve
learned first-hand from principals the challenges and opportunities of recess.
We’ve seen our leagues bring out the best in our students, and found ways to
bring more families and volunteers into our partnership. We’ve identified and
honored individuals who create more playful workplaces, change the dynamics of
the playground and go that extra mile for their schools and communities.
And we recognize that we can’t do it without your help. We are deeply grateful
that you’ve put your heads and hearts together with ours to help make it happen
every day. Thank you for your steadfast support as we continue this journey.

“Before Playworks, recess and after
recess was a hectic time for classroom
teachers and students. Many days
we’d have heated recess disagreements
between students that they would bring
back into the classroom. We’d then need
to take class time resolving the problem
-- some at a level where students would
be sent to the office for administrative
intervention. Unfortunately, we’d sometimes have students suspended due to
things that happened during recess.
Since Playworks, it is night and day. It
has literally been rare that I’ve had to
deal with a playground issue. The
students come in smiling and ready
to work. They have the opportunity to
release some excess energy through
positive play, which helps them settle
down to an afternoon of quality work.”

When most people talk about how to improve education, they tend to focus on
test scores, teacher accountability and on what teachers are doing. After 14 years
on school playgrounds, Playworks has a slightly different take on how to
enhance the educational experience for our kids.
Putting our heads together with groups like The Gallup Organization, the National
Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation (RWJF) and Stanford University, as well as with hundreds of
individuals at schools and community organizations around the nation, we
believe that recess and play also can make an impact.
Last year, nearly 2000 principals nationwide were surveyed about the role of recess
at their schools. The first-of its-kind Gallup poll revealed enthusiastic support
for recess. Principals see it benefiting kids both in the classroom and in life.
Four out of five reported that recess has a positive impact on academic achievement and virtually all believed recess has a positive impact on children’s social
development (96 percent) and general well-being (97 percent).
But recess is not without its share of challenges. The survey also revealed that
most discipline issues occur outside of the classroom, with nearly nine out of
10 principals saying the incidents take place at recess or lunch.
Last year, Playworks hit the playgrounds of 170 urban schools in 10 US cities,
bringing daily play and physical activity to more than 70,000 students. The effort
paid off. A survey of 1900 teachers and principals in our schools revealed the
overwhelming impact a well-run, inclusive recess had in the classroom. About
nine out of ten reported (ranges from 87 to 91 percent):

a decrease in the number of conflicts originating on the playground and spilling
over to class;
●
a decrease in the amount of class time spent resolving conflicts from recess;
●
a decrease in the amount of time transitioning from recess to classroom instruction;
●
a decrease in the number of disruptive events;
●
an increase in the level of participation in academic activities;
●
an increase in the level of cooperation with others during class;
●
an increase in the students’ abilities to focus on class activities;
●
an increase in class attendance;
●
an increase in the ease with which students engage with other students in class.
Kathleen Farrell is an 18-year veteran of Roselle Public
Schools. Now principal at Roselle’s Washington Elementary,
last year she was vice principal at the Leonard V. Moore
School, one of eight Newark-area Playworks schools in our
first year there.
“Playworks has really brought a lot to our schools. The
program keeps students involved and focused, it builds
camaraderie, sportsmanship, collaboration and the types
of teamwork and life skills they need to survive in the
workforce and the world,” she says.
Prior to Playworks, the recess yard was somewhat chaotic,
with minimal supervision and structure. Students would
engage in rough play or would not be engaged at all. At the
end of the period, many would return to the classroom upset
over something that happened at recess or they would be
referred to Farrell for disciplinary action.
“Playworks helped us seriously eliminate the nonsense
problems that would typically arise after recess. By
bringing some structure and a variety of activities,
the amount of behavior incidents drastically
declined. Before, there was the pushing, shoving
and bickering that spilled into the classroom, but
with Playworks this has almost diminished. Now
the teachers and I can carry on and attend
to the business of learning and education.”

“Helping others is important because
many people need help in finding the
right direction in life,” says Aleigha
Thompson, a fifth grader and junior
coach in New Orleans last year.
“Too many students were losing recess
and the opportunity to be physically
active at school. Many choose to follow
others who are not good role models
rather than listening to their own
conscience or self. The best thing about
being a junior coach is that I can help
others. The most important thing I
learned was responsibility. I need to
be on top of everything because other
children are watching and I want to
be a positive role model.”
From the day we first set foot on two playgrounds in Berkeley, California, we’ve
embraced the idea that a single, caring adult can make a huge difference. Over
the years, we’ve put our heads together with AmeriCorps and formed a playful,
positive partnership that benefits our schools, the staff and students and the
Playworks coach.
Playworks and AmeriCorps have worked together in our communities since
2004, when our first AmeriCorps members served in 34 schools in California.
The partnership has continued to grow across the country. Last year, 167
AmeriCorps members served in all 10 Playworks’ cities.
Our partnership also grew beyond the playgrounds, when we added AmeriCorps
VISTA volunteers in our offices to engage local communities in volunteerism.
AmeriCorps has become a vital part of Playworks. The partnership enables us
to recruit bright, energetic and dedicated young adults who wish to serve their
communities. It has also been key to our expansion efforts by introducing Playworks’
unique service opportunity to other states and communities.

Playworks’ junior coach program provides opportunities for the older students
to lead on the playground. Last year, nearly 4,000 students at our schools were
selected for this special leadership program. Under the mentorship of their
Playworks coach, junior coaches learned to start up and teach games, assign
playground equipment, resolve simple conflicts and engage other students in
healthy play. The junior coaches served as role models for younger and peer
students while also developing confidence and valuable leadership skills that
will help them grow into the future

For many of our youth, too many barriers prohibit them from participating in
organized sports. Putting our heads together to work with schools and districts,
last year nearly 3,500 students participated in Playworks sports leagues. For many
of these kids and their families, Playworks leagues are their first introduction to
team sports.
Leagues and tournaments bring together diverse communities, uniting families
from diverse backgrounds all in the name of cheering for all students to play
hard, have fun and respect the game.

With Playworks and AmeriCorps, I see the joy and change
that kids get through play, and I can help my community.”
Edith Mordi is just one example of how Playworks and AmeriCorps partner to make a difference on the playground and in
the community. A graduate of St. John’s University in Queens,
New York, Edith joined the Playworks team as an AmeriCorps
member in our Washington, DC schools last year.
Edith grew up with an ethic of service. Playworks combined
her passion to help children with a long standing commitment
to serve her community.
“I wanted that connection with kids. With Playworks I
get to energize and mobilize students. I can have fun
and help children grow. I get to cheer for everyone.”
AmeriCorps service is also an important part of the Playworks
experience, she explains. “As an AmeriCorps member, you
have the opportunity to get outside the box and help other
people. The experience helps people who are committed
to service learn more about opportunities to better the
world through their communities. You never know
what little thing you’ve done will change other
people’s lives.”
After serving through AmeriCorps, Edith remained
with Playworks, where she is now a program
coordinator at Taylor Elementary.

Changing the School Climate

Center for Youth and Their Communities
recently completed a year-long study on the
impact of Playworks. The research, headed
by Rebecca London and Milbrey McLaughlin,
examined the ways that Playworks
changes play and physical activity
opportunities at school and reported the
faculty views on the program’s effects on
student and school climate.
Among the highlights, at least 75 percent
of teachers and principals reported
improvement in: recess organization;
students’ abilities to start and sustain
games without adults; recess conflict;
girls engagement in games an activities
at recess and students’ physical activity
at recess.
In addition, at least three out of four
respondents also said they’ve seen
students feel more emotionally and
physically safe at school.
“The research reveals that through its
strategies of recess organization, conflict
resolution, inclusiveness, and positive
language, Playworks can successfully
increase students’ engagement in play
during recess,” says Rebecca London.
“Where Playworks really takes hold in a
school, we saw reverberating effects in
terms of positive developmental growth
for students and in-roads into overall
school climate.”

Playworks was founded with the conviction that one trained adult can make
a dynamic and measurable difference on the school playground. Last year,
we had the opportunity to put that belief to the test on a systemic level.
In a first-of-its-kind program, Playworks partnered with California’s Stockton
Unified School District in a district-wide initiative to train campus security
assistants (CSAs) at all 43 public K-8 schools. Over the course of six
months, the CSAs received 25 hours of professional development training
as well as individual coaching at their schools. The objective was to create
a systematic approach for how students moved throughout the school day,
including recess, where most of the conflicts occurred and were most likely
to spill over into the classroom.
The program was evaluated by an outside organization that surveyed principals,
teachers and students at the schools and conducted intensive site visits. The
results: significant improvements in every single area, from the knowledge and
skills of the CSAs to the health of the school environment to peer relationships.
Beyond the students, the positive impact of the program extended to the CSAs
themselves, who reported they felt better about going to work. Rather than
simply reacting to playground conflict, by engaging the kids in games and
physical activity, they became more supportive participants in school activities
and were seen as role models. As one CSA reported “I get along more with
students. Before they’d look at me and say ‘here comes the police.’ But now
they give me more respect.”
In addition, Playworks Training partnered with NIKE and the National Head
Start Association in New York and Los Angeles to reach preschool-aged
children. The year-long pilot program introduced play to early childhood
providers and parents, with the objective of starting children early on the
path to healthy play and physical activity.
Playworks is aggressively expanding our training program to reach more
adults on a systemic basis. We are working closely with districts, parent
groups, community-based organizations and others to build on the success
of our systemic training program to bring the power of play to more youth
around the country.

“When I was a principal, I saw bullies running the school and
creating chaos at recess. The teachers were frustrated,
shutting the doors and then dealing with the consequences
afterward,” he explains. “But bullies can only operate in
chaos. When we removed the chaos from the playground,
performance and test scores rose significantly.”
Nicholas wanted to stop the commotion at recess and
create a system for students to transition positively
throughout the day. Through a district-wide initiative
supported by the union and local police, he was instrumental
in bringing Playworks to Stockton. Playworks provided training
and technical assistance to campus security assistants
(CSAs) in the district’s 43 K-8 schools, giving them support
and tools to connect with students on the playground. The
results were significant.
“Prior to the training, the CSAs worked in a reactive environment
where yelling at kids and waiting for the negative
behaviors to emerge was commonplace,” says
Nicholas. “Playworks Training gave them new
skills, certified them in recess management,
and turned the recess and lunch periods
from a negative time of day to a positive,
active place.”

is personal. After daughter Simone
became a junior coach and played in
the basketball league, Lila was hooked,
volunteering to help coach Playworks
basketball leagues.
“In many of these communities, there’s
not a lot of parental involvement. The
leagues get students involved and on a
team. Some day we may get the parents
all in the same room. We need to create
a movement around this involvement.
Playworks helped me find a passion and
a way to get kids active. I want to use
my volunteer experience to open more
opportunities to get the program in our
schools and get the parents inspired to
turn out.”

Corporate Recess...
Hundreds of adults from some of the
Bay Area’s most prestigious companies,
including Google, Advent Software,
Salesforce.com, Coverity and Old Navy
joined together to play and perform
community service last year through the
Playworks Corporate Recess program. The
high-energy, high-involvement program
gave employees the opportunity to
experience the transformative power of
play and learn new games to take home
to their families. In addition to a short
training session, employees volunteered
to help at recess at a Playworks school.
The games, training and program have
the added benefit of promoting the fit
and active lifestyle good for children
and adults, and provide a positive venue
for corporate volunteerism.
“The play training was really different
because with other activities we normally
we just show up and do it,” says Jerry
Sherman, senior director of user experience
at Salesforce.com. “With the training,
I got to see my team running around
playing tag and other games with each
other—not something you see every
day. We do these types of things to make
people realize that it’s not all about
heads down doing the work. We want to
have an impact in and outside of work.”

Eric Stockel has been a Playworks ally
for at least ten years, and probably more,
he laughs. Now a member of our Los
Angeles board of directors, Eric is an
ardent supporter of the power of play.
“Playworks is an investment in the
future. Recovered class time, reduced
suspensions and fewer disciplinary
actions … They’re good metrics and
impressive for Playworks. But it’s the
gut knowledge that kids need productive
time where they can play and move and
have fun in order to learn at school that’s
born out. Raising my own kids I know
how important play is to well-being.”
Last spring we conducted our trademark Recess Roll-Outs throughout the
country, reaching nearly 23,000 students in 49 schools. In addition to creating
a new base of supporters among the schools, kids, parents and communities
we engaged during the weeklong demonstration, the roll-outs resulted in
considerable media coverage. Playworks was featured on ABC’s Nightline,
in the Houston Chronicle, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune, the
Philadelphia Daily News and on Denver radio with education news Colorado
and NPR’s Colorado Matters. Playworks also received coverage in the New
York Times and on TV Fox News 25 (Boston), KNBC’s Today in LA.
Playworks Founder Jill Vialet also gained prominence as an expert on recess
and on social innovation. She was honored in New York early in the year by
the Clinton Global Initiative and addressed San Francisco TEDx as well as
several other conferences throughout the country.

Playworks relies on a diversified funding model for sustainability. Schools pay
about 32 percent of the cost of the program, which ensures a sustainable funding
base for growth. The other 68 percent of funding comes from a combination
of private foundation, government, corporate and individual supporters.
