Plan To Attend Whitehall’s Spring Open House On April 28th!
Circle the date on your calendar and
be sure to attend the annual Spring
Open House on Saturday, April 28th
at Whitehall Fine Gifts. It’s always
a fun event, with refreshments,
door prizes and special prices on
many items. It’s well ahead of
Mother’s Day and graduations,
too, so it’s the perfect time to
shop.
When you select a gift from
Whitehall’s you’re likely to be
the favorite gift-giver ever! The
variety is huge, so you can find
something for Mom for
Mother’s Day, for the teen
who’s graduating from high
school, for someone who’s getting their Nurse’s degree...or for
whoever is on your gift-giving list!
Owners, Al and Dorothy Eliot suggest you “think outside the box” and
forgo that generic gift certificate,
choosing instead to give a personal
gift that will be cherished for years to
come.
“Our aim is to offer a shopping experience not found anywhere else in
Topeka,” says Al. “Quite often, when a
new customer comes in they are
amazed at what we have to offer.
Our shop is literally filled from
floor to ceiling with wonderful
treasures.”
“Any mom would be truly
thrilled to receive one of our
Baijan Art Glass vases,” assures
Janice Eliot, store manager. “The contemporary,
hand-blown,
exotic
glass (such as the vase
shown here) is from
Azerbaijan, southwest of
Russia. They’re created
using glassmaking traditions
that date back to the 18th
century. Each piece is a
beautiful handcrafted original.
“We also have a huge new spring
collection of dazzling Crislu and
Annaleece jewelry and gift items. There
are designs created for women of every
age, from teens-on-up. The selection
includes gorgeous necklaces, bracelets,
earrings...and sparkling, crystal-encrusted
animal and bird figurine gift boxes.
“Another ideal gift might be one of our
Pavillion© figurines with charming delicate
features and flowing skirts. Graduating
Nurses are represented, and many of the
figures have inspirational quotes inscribed
on their skirts that are meaningful to sisters,
mothers and friends.
“We have great gifts for
guys as well, such as over
50 varieties of unique
glass paperweights, KU
and K-State windspinners, Millcreek Wildlife
statuary with fantastic
realism, and much more.
“Plus, we have fun little
gifts, too, such as our
Boyd’s Bears & Friends
and many other whimsical
collectibles. Top off whatever gift you choose with a
hand-selected box of our
delectable Gourmet Truffles and (as
noted before) you’ll be an instant
favorite of any recipient!
“Park right at our door and enjoy
relaxed shopping...and the attention of
knowledgeable personnel who are
experts on every product in the store!”

You Can Make Your Old Cabinets
Look NEW Again!
If you’ve ever painted cabinets or
door fronts, you probably remember
how difficult it was to get them looking smooth, without brush marks.
Now there’s a product available at
ColorWorks Paint & Supply, at
4410 SW 21st, that promises to solve
that problem!
“Our ‘CabinetCoat®,’ made by
Coronado, is a wonderful Urethane
Acrylic that provides a finish so
smooth, it looks like it came from the
factory,” shares Diana Swafford,
store owner with husband, Bob. “It
provides the ultimate, durable finish
on kitchen and bathroom cabinets,
and shelving. Its super adhering
quality allows you to paint some surfaces without using a primer, so it’s
perfect for new, painted, polyurethaned or varnished wood, furniture,
woodwork, doors and other interior
applications. It goes on smoothly
(self-leveling) and dries to a hard,
factory-like satin finish. Plus, it’s
highly washable and long-lasting.
“Now you can give unsightly
kitchen cabinets a brand new look at
a small fraction of the cost for new!
The odor is so slight, it’s not even
necessary to have the windows open
for ventilation. What’s more, it dries
quickly and can be recoated after
just six hours.”
CabinetCoat® gave new life
to this kitchen!
CabinetCoat is available in white,
a selection of custom-mixed offwhites and decorator pastels.

Dandelions may have been fun to
blow around when we were kids,
but as adults those fast-growing
weeds are a real nuisance.
“We get many calls each spring
from home and business owners,
asking for help in getting rid of dandelions,” says Brandon Moore,
Schendel Lawn and Landscape
managing partner. “Those bright
yellow flowers make it hard to hide
the fact that a lawn is overrun with
them, so it’s important to treat for
them early if they pop up.”
Dandelions are among the weeds
targeted with Schendel’s WeedZero
Program—a six-step program comprised of both appropriate seasonal
treatments and custom treatments
designed to meet the specific needs
of your lawn. Services are generally
performed between late February and
early November. The WeedZero
Program can also be upgraded to
include a fall service to aerate and
overseed the yard.
If questions or weed concerns
arise between scheduled services,
Schendel will inspect your yard and,
if appropriate, provide treatment at
no additional charge.
“We also design and plant landscapes,” says Aaron Jones, Schendel
managing partner. “People are often
unsure about what grows best in our
climate, and they don’t have time to
design flower beds or plant and
maintain them. We develop designs
based on client desires and what will
thrive in their yard. We also offer a
program for flower bed maintenance
and yard debris clean up.
“This is the ideal time of year to
plant new landscaping, before the
heat of the summer. The earlier we
can get plants in the ground, the better their chance of survival.”
Call 785-286-0015 today to start
the planning and design process—

your property more valuable. See:

Image Is Everything—The Eyes Have It!
“First impressions are lasting
impressions,”
says
Laurie
Guilbault, licensed Electrologist of
Electrolysis Clinic of Topeka.
“Surveys indicate that people
remember the eyes of those they
meet for the first time. For anyone
concerned about the image their
bushy or unruly eyebrows convey—electrolysis is the way to be
rid of that unwanted hair forever.
“Unwanted hair can appear in
embarrassing places for a variety of
reasons. But, whatever the cause, it
can undermine self confidence and
stand in the way of happiness.
Electrolysis gets to the root of the
problem—literally! It’s great for
permanently shaping eyebrows and
eliminating hair on the upper lip,
cheeks, chin and bikini line.
“Within about a week, after using
temporary hair removal methods,
hair begins to grow back, sometimes even darker and thicker. The
only technique that permanently
removes hair is electrolysis—performed by inserting a tiny pre-sterilized, disposable probe into the
base of a hair follicle. The hair is
destroyed by a current of heat. We
adjust the current setting to release
the hair, yet keep discomfort minimal. Results are immediate, although heavy hair growth may
require several treatments within a
year for complete removal.”
Laurie (with 16 years experience
as a licensed Electrologist) will
answer questions and give a free
consultation if you call for an
appointment. Sessions range from
15 minutes to an hour.
Face the world with renewed self
confidence by getting rid of embarrassing, unruly or unsightly hair
permanently. Call the Electrolysis

Receive More For Your Gold From
Robuck Jewelers
Gold prices have been on the rise
for the last 10 years. The value has
climbed from around $300 an ounce
in 2001 to over $1,700 in 2011. The
good news is that your old gold
items such as cufflinks, watches,
coins, rings, chains, etc., are worth a
lot of money.
“We have been buying gold and
other estate jewelry for over 40
years,” says Jim Robuck of Robuck
Jewelers at 845 North Kansas Ave.
“We have earned the trust and reputation for paying more for old gold.
The reason is...we smelter and use
most of the gold we buy right here.
We don’t re-sell it to a middle man,
so the customer receives more cash.
“Precious metals are at an all time
high, so now is a good time to gather up that old gold and silver that’s
just collecting dust in the bottom of
the jewelry box and bring it to
Robuck’s. Who couldn’t use some
extra money to pay bills, take a
vacation, or put in savings? We pay
the highest prices for gold, silver,
platinum, diamonds and other
items. People are usually surprised
to find out how much their old jewelry is worth.”
“With spring here, it’s time to start
thinking about gifts for Mother’s
Day, graduations and weddings,”

the area and we’re happy to help
customers with their selections.”

Why Focus On Martial Arts For Kids?
“Martial Arts benefits children in
many ways...they learn self-control,
self-defense, self-discipline and selfconfidence,” says Ronnie Moore,
owner of Midwest Martial Arts, in
the Fairlawn Plaza Mall. “It gives
each child a chance to strengthen
his or her body and mind.
“Our society is moving at such a
pace that stress and anxiety is all
around us. As a result, children
need to learn how to relax and
develop focus and concentration.
Kids love martial arts because they
can work at their own level without
pressure that they ‘might let the
team down.’ Their self-confidence
grows as they continue to strive for
a new grade or a new belt.”
“Ian has been studying with
Master Moore for two years,” says
Matt Preston. “He seemed opposed
to other sports activities. I studied
under Master Moore several years
ago and was very impressed with
his teaching methods. We enrolled
Ian and he took to it right away. It
has built his confidence and selfesteem as well as improving his
physical fitness. I would recommend martial arts to all children.”

Dr. Tague’s Successful Weight-Loss Patient Loses Title: “Queen of Fast Foods”
The Center for Nutrition and
Preventive Medicine (CFN) was
founded by bariatric physician Rick
Tague, MD, MPH & TM in 1996.
Dr. Tague’s passion is assisting
patients pursue optimal weight and
metabolic health. “Our medical
weight control strategies are individualized, with each person’s biochemistry being taken into consideration,” states Dr. Tague. “Jamie
Hilt’s story, below, is just one of
many success stories we see every
week at the Center for Nutrition.”
“My weight problem began about
nine years ago, when I was pregnant with my first child,” explains
Jamie. “I gained about 50 pounds,
but after my daughter was born, I
only managed to lose about 30 of
those pounds. Then, when I was
pregnant with my second child, I
again gained 50 pounds, and again
lost only 30. My children are now
ages eight and three...therefore, I
could no longer get away with calling those extra pounds I was carrying around ‘baby fat’...it was definitely ‘Jamie Fat’!
“Watching a friend enjoy great success in losing weight on one of Dr.
Tague’s nutrition plans made me
decide to call the Center For
Nutrition to give it a try, and see if it
would work for me. I started my
program in mid-November, 2011,
and was wearing (in denial) a size 16.

In-Home Services For Seniors By
Seniors Who Care
Stephanie and Corey Moore, owners and operators of Seniors
Helping Seniors in-home care services were always looking for ways
to support the community—specifically seniors. “When we discovered
‘Seniors Helping Seniors’ we knew
this would be a perfect way for us to
be there for the seniors in our community in a loving, caring way,”
relates Stephanie.
“Seniors Helping Seniors in-home
services matches seniors who want
to help with seniors who need a little help. This peer-to-peer assistance allows seniors in need to
receive compassionate care from
someone they can trust and relate to.
At the same time, seniors who want
to help are able to remain active in
the community and often form lasting relationships with the peers they
are helping.
“Most of our senior workers have
already had the experience of assisting a family member or a loved one.
They understand the needs of someone of similar age and can relate to
them better than a young person.
“Our senior providers offer many
services including transportation,
light housekeeping, meal preparation, shopping, house maintenance
and small repairs, overnight stays,

Guy Anderson, Owner
“More and more people are being
exposed to indoor pollutants such as
MOLD, and Radon,” shares Guy
Anderson, of Anderson Home
Inspections. “EPA studies indicate
that air levels of indoor pollutants
may be two or three times higher
than outdoor levels. Mold, the most
dangerous offender of all, often
goes undetected because of the
places it hides. That’s why it is
important to have a home inspected
by a certified inspector...and, that is
why I earned my Indoor Air Quality
Certification and was re-certified
for Radon testing—it enables me to
provide another valuable service to
clients.
“Mold is usually found in moist
areas in a home, where it appears as
panied with a musty-type odor.
Because it is risky to buy a home
with mold problems, ‘mold sampling’ has become a standard practice during a home inspection.
“It’s important, of course, for
homeowners to take steps to prevent their homes from developing
mold. Here are a few suggestions:
Cleaning gutters and down-spouts,
and making sure the ground slopes
away from the house will help. If
the basement is damp, a dehumidifier is in order. And, everyone
should have a good sump pump. In
fact, it’s an excellent idea to have a
battery back-up for the pump to
prevent basement flooding in case
of loss of electricity.”
Guy Anderson has been in the home
inspection industry for 14 years, and
is Topeka’s only certified member of
the American Society of Home
Inspectors (ASHI). Anderson Home
Inspections specializes in residential
real estate with mechanical, structural or whole-home inspections customized to fit your needs. Guy can
also provide Radon Testing as well
as mold inspection.

Warm Winter May Mean More Flea & Tick Problems This Spring & Summer
Because this year’s mild weather
did little to kill off insects, we’re
likely to be bothered by more of
those pests this spring and summer
than ever. This includes the flea population...so you need to be on the
look-out for the first signs of fleas on
your pets. You do NOT want a flea
infestation in your home!
Fleas, although tiny, can quickly
become a huge problem. They are parasites that have mouthparts adapted
for piercing skin and sucking blood.
(Sounds like a horror movie!) Their
primary goal is to find blood and then
reproduce. Female fleas can lay 50
eggs a day, bringing about a phenomenal growth rate.
Signs that would indicate your dog
or cat has fleas are: scratching and
biting themselves in areas such as
the head, neck and around the tail
where fleas normally concentrate.
These areas can become red and
inflamed, possibly even infected.
And, beyond the pain and discomfort, fleas can transmit diseases.
According to Darrell Carder,
DVM, owner of Stone House
Animal Hospital P.A., there are
numerous flea and tick products and
many opinions as to which ones are
the most safe and effective.
“There are a variety of systemic
and non-systemic medications
Dr. Carder with (flea-free) Smokey Snavely
available, both prescribed by a veterinarian or over-the-counter, to kill
fleas,” says Dr. Carder. “Systemic
medicines put toxins into the blood
and circulate through the pet’s system, and the fleas have to bite the
animal in order to ingest the product
that will kill them.
“Non-systemic medicines are usually considered to be safer, because
they stay in the skin and the oil
glands of the hair, where the insects
pick it up as they move through the
hair.
“To add to the confusion, there are
other variables...some medicines are
good for fleas only, some are for fleas
and ticks and some even have added
protection against heart-worm. Some

get two colored pins per lane during
league play. If a bowler gets a colored head pin and gets a strike, they
win a chance to spin the prize wheel
for cash, prizes and surprises.
“League bowling is a great opportunity for a group of people to get
together for fun and bowling on a
competitive basis,” says Rex. “League
bowlers consist of people of all age
groups, from all walks of life and at all
levels of athletic skills. League bowling becomes a more equal form of
competition because of its handicap
system. An inexperienced bowler
can compete with a bowler of more
experience and skill and still have a
chance to win.
“Adult and Youth Leagues can consist of all men, all women, or a combination. Leagues bowlers can sign
up individually...with a friend...or
with an entire team. League teams
meet on a regular basis, normally
once a week, to compete against each
other. Each league has its own
unique ‘personality.’ Some are very
competitive with large prize funds,
while others are purely social with
little or no prize fund. The common
denominator among them all, however, is that they’ve all joined a
league for the pure fun of bowling.
“League bowling is an inexpensive
night out. Bowlers have a chance to
make new friends, compete on an
equal basis, and be assured that they
will have lanes to bowl on each
week at a time that’s suitable to their
own personal schedule. To put it
simply, in relationship to any other
competitive athletic event, league
bowling is the best buy in town.
“Unlike many sports, which
require major financial investments
in clothing and equipment, bowling
is very inexpensive. Just show up in
comfortable clothing and have fun.”

Are Ants Or Termites “Bugging” You?
“Spring means bugs, and
we especially see an
increase in ants and termites in the spring,” says
Joseph Davidson, district
manager of Schendel Pest
Services in Topeka. “We get
more residential calls about ants
than any other pest, especially in
April and May. And, termites generally swarm in
early spring, so those
keep us busy as well.”
It’s not surprising if
you’ve encountered ants
invading your home at one time or
another...there are over 700 species in
the U.S.! According to a survey conducted by the National Pest
Management Association (NPMA),
they are the number one nuisance
pest in America.
Here are some things you can do
to help prevent ants in your home:
• Wipe up crumbs and spills, and
don’t let dirty dishes accumulate.
• Store food in tightly-sealed containers. Ants can make their way through
very tiny openings.
• Eliminate standing water. Moisture attracts pests, such as ants.
• Keep tree branches and other
plants cut back from the house.
• Seal any cracks or openings
around your home’s foundation.
“Once ants are inside, they can be
difficult to control with over-thecounter products,” shares
Joseph. “Ants are one of
the many pests covered
under Schendel’s Premium
Care Program, which guarantees to keep a home pestfree for one year. We perform an intensive interior
and exterior service, then
follow up with quarterly visits. If treatments are needed
between services, they are done
at no additional charge.
“The NPMA estimates termite
property damage to be $5 billion per
year! Their spring swarming habits
are what typically alert homeowners
to an infestation. Call us today to
schedule a FREE termite inspection. If termite activity is found, we
can treat and protect your home

Innovative Health & Memory Care For Seniors Available At Peggy Kelly Houses
Two attractive homes in Topeka
look like any others on quiet streets
in pleasant neighborhoods. They

of Peggy Kelly for the sole purpose
of caring for her mother and others
suffering with memory problems.
Peggy Kelly House I, on 211 SW

both Kelly houses. “A nurse is on

accommodate a maximum of 10 residents (at each house) and accept people who are having memory problems
to the extent that it causes concern for
their own safety, such as Alzheimer's
or dementia. We’ve recently added
more staff at Kelly House I, to provide for a better continuum of care as
our residents age.

undergoing ‘face lifts’ with new carpeting, decor and bathroom fixtures.
