On October 3, two Amur tiger cubs – born at the Assiniboine Park Zoo in July – followed
their mother Kendra out of their den and into the public eye. They quickly won the hearts
of Winnipeggers and people from across the country who flocked to our Facebook page
to vote in our tiger cub naming poll. There was an overwhelming response with over 2,200
votes cast! The winning names were Reka for the male cub and Sarma for the female cub.

Any winter visit to the Park should start at the Duck
Pond. You can choose to go for an invigorating skate or
opt for the thrills and spills offered at the nearby toboggan run. There’s something for everyone! We’ve even
added a new “bunny run” for young ones who aren’t quite
ready for the steeper hill. The skating shelter remains
open all winter.
Photographers, birders, and nature-lovers will enjoy
the serenity of the English and Leo Mol Sculpture Gardens, which are beautiful in winter, showcasing frozen
landscapes altered in dramatic fashion by ice and snow.
Cross-country ski enthusiasts can enjoy over five km
of groomed trails that wind through every corner of the
Park. We have both Nordic and skate-style trails for all
ages and abilities or you can give snowshoeing a try.
Visit us online at assiniboinepark.ca for trail maps and
condition reports.
Fire pits and rolling snow-covered hills in the
hummocks area, part of the Nature Playground, make
this a great spot for a marshmallow roast or friendly
snowball fight.
All that fresh air is going to make you hungry! Reward
yourself and head over to the new Qualico Family Centre
next to the Duck Pond for some après-ski (or skate)
goodies. The park café serves up delicious food at
affordable prices daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
In the most bitter cold, you can always head indoors
and enjoy great works of art at the Pavilion Gallery
Museum or visit the Assiniboine Park Conservatory, a
tropical oasis that boasts perfect weather all year!
Winter is also a great time of year to visit the
Assiniboine Park Zoo, which is open daily from 10:00 am
to 4:00 pm. You won’t be fighting any crowds and the
animals are often quite active. When it’s really chilly, you
can warm up at the Animal Tracks Café, Toucan Ridge,
Zoo Gift Shop or Kinsmen Discovery Centre.
So, don’t stay cooped up inside all winter. Get out, get
active, and enjoy the frostier side of Assiniboine Park!

A Special Gift
from the Hastings Family
On November 24th, Ruth and Brian Hastings of Qualico
Developments were the guests of honour at the grand opening
of the new Qualico Family Centre.
When called upon to assist with the official ribbon-cutting, they asked their
granddaughter Eve to join them. The memory of that moment is something they
will cherish.
“We have enjoyed the Park immensely over the years,” said Ruth before relating
stories of skating with her children on the Duck Pond, visits to the Zoo, and lunches
at the Conservatory on Sundays after church.
Their love for the Park is something they have inherited. Ruth’s parents used to
ride their tandem bicycle through the Park. Her father walked there every day and
used the exercise trail well into his 80s.
“Some of my fondest memories of Assiniboine Park are the trips I used to take
there with my grandfather,” added Brian. “He was a doctor and every weekend he
would take me and my three brothers with him on his rounds. Afterward, he always
took us to the Park and out for ice cream.”
When invited to contribute to the Assiniboine Park Conservancy’s Imagine a Place
Campaign in support of a $200 million park-wide redevelopment, the Hastings chose
to direct a $3 million gift toward the new family centre so that other families could
create memories of their own.
“The Assiniboine Park Conservancy has done a great job and we are very pleased
with the result,” said Ruth. “The Centre is just beautiful, is in a great location next to the
Duck Pond, and is a welcome addition to the Park.”
Since the opening, the Hastings have visited the park café at the Qualico
Family Centre a few times for lunch and rave about the food and the atmosphere.
Brian recommends the poutine.
“We look forward to watching others enjoy the Park and the Qualico Family
Centre as much as we do,” said Ruth.

Time flies when you’re
having fun!
That’s how I felt on November 24th,
when we celebrated the opening of the
Qualico Family Centre. This event was
a pivotal one because it represented a
major milestone in the redevelopment of
Assiniboine Park.
It got me thinking about how far
we’ve come and what lies ahead.
It all started three years ago with a
bold vision for the future of Assiniboine
Park. We set the bar high with a $200
million plan that called for exciting new
attractions and facilities to be completed
in three phases over a 10-year period.
With the opening of the Qualico
Family Centre, Phase I, which included the
Nature Playground and the expansion of
the Duck Pond, is now complete.
In 2012, we move into Phase II, which
calls for significant renovations, new exhibits, and enhanced facilities for visitors
at the Assiniboine Park Zoo. Work is well
underway, but we still need significant
public support to complete these exciting
projects.
As this newsletter goes to print, we are
putting the finishing touches on the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre,
a hub for research and education that will
open to the public on January 24.
Behind the scenes, the construction
process for the Journey to Churchill exhibit continues to move forward; we are
still targeting a late 2013 opening for this
signature exhibit. The Tundra Grill project
(which will consist of a new food outlet,
retail and event space, and an arcticthemed educational playground) is also
moving forward as are plans for a new
South Gate to the Zoo. The Tundra Grill
is expected to open by the end of this
year, while the new South Gate should be
completed in late spring of 2013.
We’ve come so far in what seems like
such a short time. It’s been challenging,
rewarding, and yes, it’s been fun! I look
forward to another busy year. Please
support us as we continue this exciting
journey; we can’t do it without you!

Assiniboine Park has been a favourite field trip destination for
school children from across Manitoba for generations.
Regrettably, many classes and groups are unable to raise the funds required for such
outings. Now, with the help of the Graham C. Lount Family Foundation, that barrier has
been removed for several schools, the majority from downtown and inner-city Winnipeg.
Launched in the fall of 2011, the new Field Trip Subsidy Program covers field trip fees
and transportation costs. It is opening doors and providing new learning opportunities for
hundreds of children.
Rinse chicken wings under cold water and pat
dry. In a large bowl toss wings in cornstarch to
coat. In a deep fat fryer, or a deep pot with oil
heated to 360 degrees, brown chicken wings until
fully cooked and crispy.
“Our Foundation’s mission is to support Winnipeg-based organizations that help
children, particularly children and youth at risk, so this program is a perfect fit,” said
Colin Lount. His father, Graham, a life-long Winnipegger and businessman, is still actively
involved in managing the Foundation along with Colin and other family members.
The Field Trip Subsidy Program aims to help students aged six to 17 experience the
diverse interactive learning opportunities that await at Assiniboine Park, opportunities
that are generally lacking for the schools that have been invited to participate.

International Polar Bear

Do mother polar bears with cubs benefit from being close
to family?
In over-simplified terms, this is the question being asked by Assiniboine Park
Zoo researchers who are currently involved in a study designed to provide some
insight into the complex social structures of polar bears in the wild.
A unique program designed for children 3 and 4 years
of age with an adult partner. Join us at the Qualico
Family Centre, Conservatory, or Zoo for songs, stories,
crafts, snacks, puppets, play and oodles of fun learning
activities!

research report
From the
Nature Tots for 3s & 4s
The study employs genetic testing
and GPS mapping to plot the locations
of bears along a section of Hudson Bay
coastline, taking into consideration the
gender, age, and stage of life of the bears.
“Some patterns have emerged from
preliminary analysis that suggest female
bears, particularly those who have cubs,
may prefer to spend the summer in closer
proximity to related females with cubs,
while males don’t seem to care who they
are near,” said Stephen Petersen, Head of
Conservation & Research for the Assiniboine Park Zoo.
Why that might be is uncertain. Males
are bigger and stronger and may be able
to monopolize exposed areas along the
coastline while they wait for ice to form.
These areas are windy so bears can
keep cool and away from bugs. Females
probably avoid males who could decide
to kill her cubs but may tolerate other
females with cubs because they are less
of a risk.
Further analysis of the data will shed
more light onto these patterns and how
familial relations come into play. This will
expand our collective understanding of
polar bear behaviour and may influence
conservation programs and how zoos
care for bears in captivity.
“The more we know about the
complex dynamics of polar bear behaviour, the better chance we will have to
maximize the impact of our efforts and
resources in the conservation of polar
bears,” said Petersen.
The International Polar Bear Conservation
Centre is scheduled to open to the public
on January 24 and will help the Assiniboine Park Zoo achieve its goal of actively
contributing to environmental and wildlife
education, research, and conservation.

Assiniboine Park Conservatory
The Field Trip Subsidy Program aims to help students aged six to 17 experience the
diverse interactive learning opportunities that await at Assiniboine Park, opportunities
that are generally lacking for the schools that have been invited to participate.

with on-site school programs offered at the Conservatory, Pavilion
Gallery Museum, Zoo and new Qualico Family Centre. Most of our
programs combine indoor and outdoor components with handson activities and cross-curricular learning outcomes. Visit us online

“We believe that if you give children help and opportunity when they are young,

International Polar Bear
Conservation Centre
Do mother polar bears with cubs benefit from being close
to family?
In over-simplified terms, this is the question being asked by Assiniboine Park
Zoo researchers who are currently involved in a study designed to provide some
insight into the complex social structures of polar bears in the wild.
A unique program designed for children 3 and 4 years
of age with an adult partner. Join us at the Qualico
Family Centre, Conservatory, or Zoo for songs, stories,
crafts, snacks, puppets, play and oodles of fun learning
activities!

research report
From the
Nature Tots for 3s & 4s
The study employs genetic testing
and GPS mapping to plot the locations
of bears along a section of Hudson Bay
coastline, taking into consideration the
gender, age, and stage of life of the bears.
“Some patterns have emerged from
preliminary analysis that suggest female
bears, particularly those who have cubs,
may prefer to spend the summer in closer
proximity to related females with cubs,
while males don’t seem to care who they
are near,” said Stephen Petersen, Head of
Conservation & Research for the Assiniboine Park Zoo.
Why that might be is uncertain. Males
are bigger and stronger and may be able
to monopolize exposed areas along the
coastline while they wait for ice to form.
These areas are windy so bears can
keep cool and away from bugs. Females
probably avoid males who could decide
to kill her cubs but may tolerate other
females with cubs because they are less
of a risk.
Further analysis of the data will shed
more light onto these patterns and how
familial relations come into play. This will
expand our collective understanding of
polar bear behaviour and may influence
conservation programs and how zoos
care for bears in captivity.
“The more we know about the
complex dynamics of polar bear behaviour, the better chance we will have to
maximize the impact of our efforts and
resources in the conservation of polar
bears,” said Petersen.
The International Polar Bear Conservation
Centre is scheduled to open to the public
on January 24 and will help the Assiniboine Park Zoo achieve its goal of actively
contributing to environmental and wildlife
education, research, and conservation.
