Kia Ora
A special welcome to Charlie Sprenger who started this week. We have had a large number of New Entrants start this year and Nicole and I
would like to thank all the parents who have offered to help during literacy time in the classroom. It has made such a difference when we
have other adults to listen to student’s read or help them with their writing.
BOT Changes At our meeting in February, George Stevenson was elected as the new chairperson. Jason Smith has decided to step down as
chair due to other commitments but remains on the BOT as vice chair. Jason has contributed hugely in his time as chairperson and the BOT
and I would like to thank him for all his hard work. George has been on the BOT for a number of years as our finance person and with his
working knowledge of BOT matters, it should be a smooth passing of the reins. We would also like to thank Rose Dickison for her input into
the BOT over the last four years. Rose has resigned from the BOT now her children have left the school and there is now a vacancy on our
BOT. We have advertised this in the Ensign last week and in the newsletter today. If you are interested in the position on the BOT please
ring one of our members listed to discuss it.
School House Captains. This year we have decided to reintroduce houses to the school. This week the students chose their new house captains and began designing a flag. Our first official house points competition will be run alongside the Athletics day with points for participation and placings. Our House captains are Moana (sea) – Ashley Stevenson and Trinity Fraser. Awa (river) – Nick Palmer and Kerriana PawaHeslip and Maunga (mountain) - Riley Smith and Brenna Wilson. Congratulations leaders!
Waikaka District Athletics Day This year it is being held on Thursday 26th February. Just a reminder that it is an expectation that parents
take and pick up their children on this day or arrange with another parent to do so. Please return the form letting us know about your
transport arrangements, by Tuesday if you have not already done so.
Bell Time Changes From Monday our lunch time will slightly alter. We will be having lunch at 12.30 – 1.15. This came about from a discussion
with staff and we all felt a slightly longer afternoon would give us more time to work on Inquiry.
Change of Contact Information Please let the school office know if there are any changes in bus arrangements, phone numbers, addresses
and emergency contact persons/numbers. It is frustrating to ring parents in an emergency and find that numbers no longer exist. We also
must have two emergency contacts from every family, if you are new to the area perhaps your employer would be one of those numbers.
Year 7/8 Rural Schools Programme Te Tipua hosted the programme for three days over the last two weeks. Tracey Watson is the teacher
that is hired by the five schools involved, to organise and run the programme. The students get to know each other over the time they spend
together and friendships have already been established between schools and students. One of our parents, Debbie Smith organised Suzanne
Emslie (Stone carver) to come for our first day and teach the basics of Oamaru stone carving and then Debbie and a group of parents and
friends of our school stepped in to help the students. A special thank you to all who helped. The students also learnt some Spanish and completed trust and cooperative games while they were here. On Tuesday our students will go to Longford Intermediate for the first time this
year. The dates this term are 24th Feb, 17th March, 24th March, and 31st March.

Athletic Day
The Southern Dirt Bike Riders Club Inc
would like to thank the Miller Farms for the use of their
land last month to host their first motocross club day. We
are a new club catering for riders of all abilities getting
back to the grass roots of motor cycle racing, running motocrosses and trail rides all around Southland on natural farm
terrain. We are a non-profit organisation where funds
raised over and above the clubs costs for the day are dispersed back into the community to clubs, schools and charities. We have no fixed abode and are always on the lookout
for land to use for our monthly event which is held on the
third Sunday of each month.
If you have land that could be used to help us hold our
monthly events, are interested in attending an event or
would like us to help you with your fundraising please contact
Aaron Schreurs 0276360054.
