We are pleased to update our members with a report on our facility renovation and some exciting details regarding the transformation that will be taking place here over the next 18 months. This is a preview of the many dramatic changes yet to come. We want you to know that the revitalization of our Center and the success of our Gift of Community Capital and Endowment Campaign will ensure that our agency will remain a cornerstone of Jewish life in Bergen County for generations to come. Even in these financially challenging times, the campaign and our renovation are successfully proceeding on schedule. We have met the generous $2,000,000 challenge grant from the Russell Berrie Foundation, which has allowed us to advance our project exponentially by matching donations dollar for dollar. We have reached our goal for the endowment portion of the campaign and are well on our way to completing the capital portion of the Gift of Community Campaign. We are now looking to our community to raise the final $4,000,000, which will allow us to realize the full scope of our project. “We are grateful to the many people who have supported the Campaign to date,” says Campaign Chairperson and JCC Vice President Pearl Seiden. “We are thrilled with the renovation of our Center and the dramatic progress we see each day. However, we still need greater support from our community to reach our goal.” Our new Water Park, an interactive play land featuring brightly colored sprinklers, misting rainbows and dumping buckets, opened this summer for kids of all ages to enjoy. It was one of the highlights of our children’s summer experience and is a great addition to our Aquatics Center. The renovations that will be complete this fall include two new exercise rooms, spinning room, an expansion of the Sadinoff Fitness Center to double its previous size, designated stretching areas and a family changing suite with individual facilities. A new entrance to the Complex, a reception area as well as a locker court, locker rooms, tumble room and babysitting room will be complete and open in January 2010. Two racquetball courts and an additional exercise room will open next fall with the vast majority of construction finished by the end of December of 2010. In addition to the new facility space, substantial expansions in Health and Fitness programming are beginning this fall. Under the leadership of a new director, the department is offering a diverse and expanded range of classes with many new instructors. Members can now enjoy over 60 group exercise classes for free each week. Our Wellness Department is adding a new dimension to its services by featuring a wide gamut of specialized programs, including semi-private Pilates training, stress reduction workshops and an enhanced range of massage modalities. Specialized service packages featuring fitness evaluations, personal trainings, massage, nutritional consultations and other wellness options will be offered. Renovations are underway for the January grand opening of the Seiden Wellness Center, which will feature luxurious, adult-only locker suites with towel service and other spa amenities. However, beginning in October, the new Wellness Department will be up and running with a new spa center, a private fitness area with three rooms for private nutritional and fitness consultations; and a roster of revitalizing spa & wellness services, including massage services. Upon retirement he trained himself in tropical diseases. Pictured at left is Dr. Bergen helping at an orphanage. Dr. Bergen recently spent four months working in a medical clinic in Kabira, located on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. Kabira has a population of 1.2 million people and is the largest, bleakest slum in Africa. Dr. Bergen was amazed to find a thriving Jewish community nestled in the region, with a rich heritage and a beautiful synagogue. Come learn about this Jewish community in Nairobi and the remarkable work that people in our own community engage in to make the world a better place. Dr. Bergen’s presentation will include stunning photos of his travels and a Q&A session. Featuring Marianne J. Legato, MD, FACP Friday, October 23, 2009 11-11:30 am VIP Reception 11:30-12 pm Boxed Lunch 12-1:30 pm Program You have a fight with your husband and go to bed angry. You wake up the next morning, ready to do battle and he acts like nothing ever happened. Why is that? You remember every detail of what you consider a very important conversation and he barely remembers a word. Why is that? The fascinating answers stem from the fact that men and women often see the same things so differently that it sometimes appears as if they belong to different species – and no one has done more research to understand why this is so than Marianne J. Legato, MD, FACP, author of Why Men Never Remember and Women Never Forget. Mark your calendars for this cutting-edge lecture on the latest news regarding gender-specific health and treatment modalities. It’s a visit to the doctor you won’t want to miss! Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year. So wrote the renowned poet and essayist, Ralph Waldo Emerson. We Jews can well appreciate his sentiments. After all, every morning, we’re supposed to wake up to the words of Moh’deh Ah’nee – thankful for the souls which have been returned to us for yet another day. rather than diminishing – the principled observances and practices that have preserved us through the millennia. Each day is its own day. And as we approach our annual High Holidays, each year is its own year. Ironically, for most of us, the New Year is about to begin with plates filled with leftovers from the last. Closer to home is our sense of mission as a JCC. For us too, a new Jewish year brings not a new mission, but rather renewed efforts to fulfill a continuing one; to mold feelings of Jewish community, to promote an understanding and love of our Jewish heritage, to tend to and provide for the needs of our fellow Jews, with words of Welcome! We are here for you! However many economists, for example, have announced and will proclaim that the recession is already in the past. For untold millions of Americans, it will persist in affecting and afflicting. The politics of health care will also carry into the new Jewish year. One can only hope that – at the least, the approximately forty-six million Americans who currently have no health insurance and whose needs the President set out to meet, will somehow emerge with the life-saving coverage that is their right and our obligation. So it is, as well, with Jewish religious politics – certainly those of the American Jewish community; profound questions of substance and form, direction, institutional affiliation, religious definitions and intra-religious tolerance. Again, we would hope that all of the “answers” proposed will wind up reinforcing – The State of Israel will surely preoccupy us, as it always has. For ours is a never ending quest for peace, as is our quest for true peace-partners. But if peace is ever to be more than a pipedream, our enemies will have to evolve beyond a culture of jihad and terrorism which aims to destroy our sovereign Jewish State. And the outstanding challenge for the Jews of the Diaspora is to sustain the existence and honor of our State of Israel in the face of those who would, if they could, wish her into wisps of smoke. Our High Holidays present us with a wonderful opportunity to re-examine and evaluate the conduct and focus of our lives. And what better way to usher in such blessings, than by joining us as we re-energize our commitment to a JCC mission designed to improve the well-being of our Jewish community. What better way for all of us to enjoy a Shana Tovah Um’tukah! A Good and Sweet New Jewish Year! B’ vracha, Avi. A. They then go straight to Israel to celebrate Israel’s 60th anniversary. Narrated by Matt Lauer of The Today Show, and using historical and current day footage, the story unfolds through the eyes and feelings of three sons of concentration camp survivors, a son-in-law of a US soldier who liberated the camps and two men with no direct connection at all. They went to find their roots. They found so much more. It was the most memorable seven days of their lives. Mr. Gershon will lead a discussion after the screening. Co-sponsored by the JCC Israel Connections and Judaic Departments, and the Center for Israel Engagement of the UJA-NNJ. Day Care Fun & Friends The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades Day Care program for our young toddlers is a wonderful way for your child to spend a fun filled, safe day. All of our activities are nurturing, age appropriate and educational. Our aim is to improve verbal and motor skills. The children learn how to share and make friends, and most importantly, your child will have loads of fun and positive memories. This summer we spent some time in our new water park. The children had so much water play fun, it was a great success! At the JCC Early Childhood Center children are encouraged to learn through their senses with many creative and hands-on experiences. The children explored the beautiful JCC outdoor environment with daily nature walks. They also enjoyed the summer season playing in our modern fenced in playground where searching for butterflies was the popular activity. This has been a very successful and enjoyable summer for the children attending the JCC Day Care program. Arts and crafts, stories and songs with summer themes and fresh fruit ice pops were just some of the activities that made the children feel so happy and delighted to come back to school in the fall. Water Park Grand Opening It’s Me, the Superhero The JCC made a splash this summer with the grand opening of its new water park. This exciting, interactive play land, features brightly colored sprinklers, misting rainbows, water sprays, dumping buckets and other exciting surprise effects. Everyone from the littlest toddlers to teens enjoyed this unique facility, which is the only one of its kind in the area. It was one of the highlights of our children’s summer experience, and a great addition to our Aquatics Center. The School of Performing Arts held exciting musical theater camps at the JCC and BergenPAC, and a two-week summer dance intensive, that were all huge successes. Pictured here is a photo from the JCC BergenPAC production of It’s Me, the Superhero, a story about a family adventure when the circus comes to town. 14 Kaplen JCC ON THE PALISADES Sept./Oct. 2009 Elul| Tishri| Cheshvan g/y’’xa, iuaj|hra,|kukt TEEN SERVICES HS Juniors & Seniors! The focus will be to challenge individuals of all health and fitness levels while improving the fundamental concepts of balance. Loss of balance can occur for any of us who have: bad posture, loss of muscle strength or are inactive. By practicing specific balance exercises you have the opportunity to improve posture and body awareness. The workshop will also target specific muscle groups that aid in improving balance. Workshop will utilize multi-modality surfaces and exercises that will improve and promote balance and core muscles. Individual evaluation will be performed for each participant pre and post workshop to track and record progress. Maximum 8 participants. Many back problems are simply due to tension and muscular tightness, which may come from poor posture, inactivity and lack of abdominal strength. Up to 90 percent of all Americans will experience back pain in their lifetime. Poor posture increases pressure on the discs in the spine, stresses muscles and stretches the ligaments which can cause spasm and pain. Flexion and extension exercises help ensure flexible back muscles. Back exercises may be useful for people with chronic back pain to help them return to normal activities and functions. Making back exercise part of your daily routine will help improve pain relief and increase functional abilities. This workshop will target specific exercises and stretches to improve posture, increase abdominal strength, increase flexibility, and provide you with the knowledge of how you can prevent injuries. Workshop includes: evaluations to track progress and individualized back care guides, including stretches and exercises tailored for each participant to take home to continue their exercises independently. Martin draws upon her own experience as a stepmother, interviews with other stepmothers and stepchildren, and fascinating insights from literature, anthropology, psychology and evolutionary biology to reveal the little understood realities of this most demanding role. Wednesday Martin holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Yale. She was a regular contributor to the New York Post’s parenting page and her work has appeared in numerous national magazines. Martin, a stepmother for eight years, lives with her husband and their two sons. Janice will share some of her consumer tips from her first book, Tricks of the Trade: A Consumer Survival Guide aimed at helping shoppers avoid getting ripped off when buying everything – from electronics to diamond rings. Dr. Anya Luchow, Event Chair Dump ‘Em Thursday, Jan. 28, 10am Private Home | $50* In her latest book, How to Shop for a Husband: A Consumer Guide to Getting a Great Buy on a Guy, which she wrote with her long-time friend Bonnie Teller, Janice turns her savvy shopping eye and years of her own and others’ dating experience into a smart and effective guide for women entering the trickiest store of all: the dating marketplace. Janice Lieberman, NBC’s Consumer expert, is the top cop to go to on The Today Show and a contributing editor to Reader’s Digest magazine where she writes a column Here’s the Deal. One and the Same Wednesday, Feb. 11, 8pm Family Meals Tuesday Dec. 8, 8pm The Girls From Ames Tuesday Jan. 12, 8pm By Michael Tucker with Jill Eikenberry by Jeffrey Zaslow Family Meals: Coming Together To Care for an Aging Parent is about the journey home, which is most certainly not a place. It’s about children becoming adults; it’s about an aged parent becoming a child; it’s about a husband and wife realizing that the direction of their life is never the issue – only that they’re moving in that direction together. Michael Tucker is an actor best known for his portrayal of Stuart Markowitz in the long-running NBC series, LA Law. He and his wife, actress Jill Eikenberry, now split their time between New York City, where they pursue work in the theater, and their home in Umbria, Italy, where they pursue the good life. Unlocking the Torah Text Wednesday, March 3, 8pm Meet the Ames Girls: childhood friends who formed a special bond growing up in Ames, Iowa. Now spread across the country, they’ve maintained an enduring friendship that has carried them through marriage and motherhood, a child’s illness and the mysterious death of one member of their group. Their story is inspiring in part because they have long embraced their differences. The Ames girls, now in their forties, have a lifetime of memories in common. They share a sweeping and moving story that will resonate with any woman who has ever had a friend. Jeffrey Zaslow is a Wall Street Journal columnist and co-author of The Last Lecture. Speyer by Abigail Pogrebin by Rabbi Shmuel Goldin Everybody has that special someone in their life that they can’t wait to get rid of. Whether it’s their overbearing Jewish mother, a housekeeper, or friend that’s become a real shnorrer, the time comes when you have to pull the plug on the relationship. Abigail Pogrebin, whose identical twin, Robin Pogrebin, is a reporter for The New York Times, reveals what it’s really like to grow up a twin, and asks experts who have devoted their careers to understanding twins why this particular relationship can be both so powerful and so fraught. In One and the Same, Abigail interviews twins who still dress alike as adults, twins who still measure every success by the other, a twin unraveled by the loss of his identical brother in 9/11. In one particularly moving chapter, she interviews twin survivors of Dr. Josef Mengele. Abigail Pogrebin is the author of Stars of David: Prominent Jews Talk About Being Jewish. A Yale graduate and former producer for Mike Wallace at 60 Minutes, Abigail has wrtitten for many national magazines and lives in Manhattan with her family. This book is designed to convey the drama and relevance of the events which shape the birth of the Jewish nation through a series of studies on the weekly portion of the Book of Shmot (Exodus). Each study features a brief summary of the narrative, a number of questions striking to the core of the text and a review of traditional commentaries and original approaches. Rabbi Shmuel Goldin has served as spiritual leader of Congregation Ahavath Torah, Englewood, NJ, since 1984. He is an instructor of Bible and Philosophy and at Isaac Breuer College and the James Striar School of Yeshiva University. He is the founding director of and lecturer at The Eve Flechner Torah Institute, and past president and board member of numerous organizations. He is noted as one of the most articulate spokesmen in the Orthodox community today. Featuring personal stories, useful scripts, and interviews with experts, such as Bob Harper from The Biggest Loser, funnyman Adam Corolla, and Michael Jackson’s attorney, Thomas Mesereau, Dump ‘Em is a practical guide for giving any bad relationship the boot. Jodyne L. Speyer is a writer and a recovering avoidant. She has produced documentaries for National Geographic and worked on such shows as Joe Millionaire, Shear Genius and The Supreme Court of Comedy.
