Jesus is Risen, He is Risen indeed, Alleluia! This is truly the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad. My hope and prayer is that everyone who comes to Church on this day will join us every week. We need one another. The world needs committed disciples of Jesus Christ, not lukewarm Christians, but disciples who make a difference. Every Sunday is a celebration of Christ’s resurrection. We come to the Table of the Lord to be strengthened, refreshed, challenged and fed. We need to hear the message of eternal life, to know we are eternally loved, and not lose sight of our heavenly home. There are no distinctions around the Lord’s Table; we are one family, brothers and sisters in Christ. In this sacred place our worth and dignity is affirmed, celebrated and acknowledged. All are welcome! In 1991, I was asked to write a short article for a national newspaper ‘The Independent.’ I came across it recently when I was going through some papers. I was obviously very young at the time but I would like to share it with you: “My deeply held beliefs center on a person. That person is Jesus Christ. There is, for me, a very important moment in St. John’s Gospel when a number of Christ’s followers walk away from him, unable to accept his teachings. He asks those who remain if they are going to walk away too. Peter replies: ‘To whom can we go, you alone have the message of eternal life’. These few words contain my profession of faith. Jesus alone has the message of eternal life. God has come to us as a person, Jesus, to show us the way to live; to open our eyes and hearts to what is true about ourselves and each other; and most of all to take the fear out of death. Such convictions come to me through forming a relationship with Jesus Christ through prayer, the scriptures, the Church and the witness and love of countless other Christians. If you allow Jesus Christ to be the driving force of your life, you will live it to the full! My beliefs are practical and livable. I am called by Jesus to build – through my daily life, my decisions, my choices, my words and my actions – a Kingdom of justice, love and peace here on earth. Without my faith my life would be very empty: it would have no purpose, no fun, no challenge and no ultimate end. If you see faith as a relationship, as I do, then there are bound to be doubts, depending on what you are going through in your life. Questioning is an important part of a living faith. My beliefs center on a God whose love I can never totally comprehend. But our God is not at a distance: He has become flesh in Jesus, so that we can get to know him as a friend.” 2 www.ourladydunedin.org April 5, 2015 BEER, BOURBON & BITES Saturday, April 11, 6-10pm In the Conmy Center Craft beer, bourbon, wine, and a smorgasbord of food! The children are learning what it means to pray, fast, and give their talents and kindness to God and others. Every day we are practicing kind deeds to show others that we know how to give ourselves up to God. We started out this Lenten journey by creating a Kindness Quilt, and we even got to share this with our parish family recently at Mass! We were so excited to be able to share how and why, through writing and illustrating, we have transformed ourselves during Lent at Our Lady of Lourdes. Kindergarten has been learning and watching how caterpillars transform into beautiful butterflies. This reminds us to change and grow in God’s love. We can connect the transformation of the butterfly to Jesus dying on the cross for us and rising to new life! Every day we have been learning and praying a new Station of the Cross to prepare us for our walk through the Stations. We also planted a resurrection garden and we are patiently waiting for it to grow. The Kindergarten class understands the true meaning of Lent and why we must all transform into kind and loving children of God. Every one of the four Gospels provides an account of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which makes perfect sense because the bodily resurrection of Jesus has always been the foundation of the Christian faith from the very beginning. It is an ancient tradition, based on the evidence of scripture and on the writings of the early church, that Jesus celebrated the Last Supper on a Thursday, died on a Friday, and rose from the dead on a Sunday. Thus, today’s Gospel tells us that Jesus rose from the dead on “the first day of the week” (John 20:1). Within about a hundred years of Jesus’ resurrection Christians were celebrating the great Easter Vigil, beginning after dark on Holy Saturday and continuing until dawn on Easter morning. During this vigil, Christians heard salvation history through scripture readings, celebrated the resurrection of Jesus, and looked forward to his return. At the vigil men and women who had gone through three years of instruction were baptized and received First Communion. Without his death and rising to new life Jesus would have been merely another Jewish teacher and failed messiah. His teachings would be just a code of ethics and our worship in vain. We celebrate the Resurrection for fifty days, and for the rest of the year every Sunday is a kind of “mini-Easter.” Easter is the culmination of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection that we celebrate “with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth” (1 Corinthians 5:8). If you have not been to church for a while, we invite you to come back again and know that you are welcome in the community of faith. Please speak to the priest after Mass or call the parish office and let us help you feel at home. Annual F.A.S.T. Rally Faith and Action for Strength Together April 13 at 7pm - St. Catherine of Sienna FAST is an interfaith organization which brings people together to work for justice in our community. Our Lady of Lourdes has been a member of FAST in Pinellas County for over six years. Some of the more recent successes of FAST are: Securing full day pre-K programs for more than 7,000 low income 4 year olds Working with SPC to create “Learn to Earn,” retraining unemployed individuals to re-enter the workplace These successes cannot be obtained by one person or one congregation, but by many people working for justice for their neighbor. The Lord requires us “to do justice, love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God.” (Micah 6:8). Bishop Lynch has asked us to work for justice with FAST. Join us at the Annual Fast Rally to hear the issues we have been working on this past year and to prepare for the Nehemiah Action on April 27 at Tropicana Field. For more information, call Peggy at 727-776-9877 evenings. Conmy Debt Reduction Collection This Weekend We could not do this without you!
