May - Housing Authority of the City of Austin
A monthly publication of the Housing Authority of the City of Austin May 2015 . Volume 25 . Issue No. 5 G HACA, Community Partners Plant the Seeds for Good Health aston Place residents have a new, healthy way to relax, socialize and learn this summer. HACA’s Planning and Development Department recently installed a community garden just for Gaston residents on the south side of the apartment building at 1941 Gaston Place Dr. Gardening is an excellent way to get physical activity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Active people are less likely than inactive people to be obese or have high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke, depression or colon cancer. At the request of several green-thumbed residents, HACA began setting aside funds to develop the garden more than a year ago. About $30,000 has been spent to prepare the space, which features a sidewalk and 22 individual metal raised beds sitting atop crushed granite allowing for easy access for residents in wheelchairs or using walkers. Each resident who uses the garden will have his or her own raised bed measuring 2 feet by 6 feet by 2 feet where he or she can plant vegetables, herbs or ornamental plants. In addition, a piece of outdoor fitness equipment, a picnic table and benches also will be installed to ensure the recreational space may be enjoyed by all who visit. Although there are no current plans to build community gardens at other HACA public housing properties, it is possible the idea could expand to other locations in the future. HACA also is looking into the possibility of partnering with local community gardening groups like the Sustainable Food Center to assist residents in making their gardening projects a success. The agency has already received a few donations of gardening tools and other supplies from Treehouse and Zinger Hardware. BEFORE AFTER Residents Recognized by TX NAHRO During Annual Conference Residents Rachel Martinez and Ivy Tran were recently honored with awards during the TX NAHRO 39th Annual Conference and Tradeshow. Tran, a BTW resident and a a senior at Eastside Memorial High School, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. She is active in several extracurricular activities, including the National Honor Society, orchestra, the robotics team, the Green Team (a program of Keep Austin Beautiful), and student council — all while maintaining a 3.9 GPA. Resident Leaders Visit the State Capital The Rosewood Resident Leaders visited the legislators’ office at the Texas State Capital last month for a history lesson about Texas political forerunners, past and present. The idea for the trip began at a Community Advancement Network (CAN) meeting last year when Nancy Neavel spoke with HACA Choice Neighborhoods Project Manager Eileen Schrandt about the importance of participation in government and how to help make Texas a better place to live.
