Installation Instructions for KLR650 High Intensity LED Turn Signal
Installation Instructions for KLR650 High Intensity LED Turn Signal Bulb Replacement Kit 1. Using a Philips head screw driver, remove the four screws that hold the windscreen to the front fairing. Be careful not to lose the thin washers between the screw heads and the windscreen. 2. Pull the windshield up and back to slide it out of the fairing. 3. Locate the turn signal lamp holder (green and white wire) as shown in the photo below and use a Philips head screw driver to snag the wires and pull the bulb holder out of the instrument panel hole. 4. Grasp the incandescent bulb firmly and pull it out of the bulb holder as shown in the photo below. Hold the bulb holder with one hand while firmly pulling the bulb out with the other. 5. Insert a green LED indicator bulb from the kit into the turn signal bulb holder as shown in the photo below. 6. Reinsert the turn signal bulb holder into the hole in the instrument panel that it came from. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for the neutral and high beam indicator bulbs. Use a green LED for the neutral light and a blue LED for the high beam light. 7. Locate the stock turn signal flasher module which is being pointed to by the screw driver in the below photograph. Remove the flasher module by tugging the rubber collar that holds it in place to the side and slipping it over the tab that holds it in place. Once it is free of the mount, pinch the latch on the connector to disconnect it from the wiring. The part number of the stock flasher is typically a Denso FE246BH. 8. Plug in the electronic flasher module supplied in the kit as shown below. Make sure that the connector is fully seated and latched. After plugging it in, test it by operating your turn signals. Once it is confirmed to be working properly, use the small tie wrap included in the kit to secure the new flasher to the large wire bundle behind the panel, or any other secure mounting point of your choosing. Pass the tie wrap through the hole in the mounting tab on the flasher module. 9. Replace the windscreen and screw in back in place using the four screws that were removed in step 1. 10. Remove the retaining screw from the bottom of the turn signal housing as shown in the photo below. 11. Grasp and twist the lens of the turn signal clockwise as shown in the photo below to pop it loose. Pull the lens off and set it aside. 12. Grasp, push and twist the amber bulb counter-clockwise and then pull it out of the bulb socket. 13. Grasp the LED bulb replacement by the base and carefully insert it into the bulb socket. Push it in fully and twist clockwise to latch it in place, being careful not to put excessive force on the leads that hold the PCA to the base. 14. Carefully replace the lens of the turn signal taking care not to apply force to the PCA or leads on the LED bulb, and secure it in place with the retaining screw. 15. Repeat steps 10 through 14 for the three remaining turn signals. The installation is now complete. Enjoy your brighter, long life LED turn signals. Important Note: The turn signal indicator bulb cross-feeds current from the operating to the non-operating turn signals. Replacing the incandescent lamp with an LED lamp cuts the cross-fed current from 200mA to 18mA. This significantly reduces the current flowing through the “off” turn signals, but they will still produce a faint amount of light when the operating signals are flashing. This is normal and cannot be corrected without a wiring modification. The off signals are very dim and will not be confused with the operating signals, even at night. To eliminate the off signal flash, you can modify the indicator bulb wiring as shown below, adding two small switching diodes as indicated in the wiring diagram: A convenient grounding point is the ground wire on the upper speedometer backlight bulb.
